Today, Alma’s highly lauded film, television and theatre work establishes her as one of the industry’s most accomplished, versatile and respected Latina actors. After Zoot Suit’s 1979 critically acclaimed theatrical run that shattered all existing Los Angeles box office records, Alma was cast by Australian director Fred Schepisi to star in his American film debut Barbarosa (1980). Enjoyed the stage performance @ ~ . Zoot Suit, a pachuco story written by Luis Valdez
Robert Beltran And one person excels at putting everything into perspective for me: Luis Valdez, writer, director, producer, creator, story teller. The play Zoot Suit made me proud of whom I was in cultural context, I did have a History. I remember getting chills at the end of the play when they said that Hank Reyna’s kids were attending the University of California and spoke ‘Calo’ and called themselves Chicanos. And as evolution and transformation would have it, Valdez did it to me again. “I don’t have to show you any stinkin’ badges” was a play written by Valdez and had a great run at the Los Angeles Theater Center (LATC) years later starring Robert Beltran. It took me and sliced me right open. My sister Cyndee saw the performance and came back saying, “You have to see this play! It’s your story.” I thought to myself, how dare she, no one could ever know my story and struggle. On the night that Linda and I were going to see the play, we stopped by my Mom’s house to say hello. ...
