Cheng Li: arrest of Zhou Yongkang is about changing public view of Communist Party, not factional rivalry
Juicy scandals await as case unfolds Xinhua News Agency broke the news at the stroke of midnight on Friday that former security tsar Zhou Yongkang had been expelled from the Communist Party and formally arrested on a number of serious charges. For the public, the accusation that Zhou had extramarital affairs and traded his power for sex was the juiciest. He was said to have kept at least 29 mistresses, including many hotties at state television broadcaster CCTV. Concerns had been raised that President Xi Jinping may have met resistance in his corruption fight, after the party's fourth plenum made no mention of the Zhou case in its communique. Xinhua's announcement showed Xi has now cleared the hurdles in dealing with the prized "tiger." Although much was previously rumored, the announcement was highly titillating. It cited six sins allegedly committed by Zhou that included serious violation of party discipline. He is further accused of taking advantage of his posts and accepting bribes, abusing his power ...

CHINA: EX-SECURITY CZAR ZHOU UNDER INVESTIGATION BEIJING (AP) - China's ruling Communist Party announced an investigation into a feared ex-security chief on Tuesday, demonstrating President Xi Jinping's firm grip on power and breaking a longstanding taboo against publicly targeting the country's topmost leaders. If he goes to trial, Zhou Yongkang would be the highest-level official to be prosecuted since the 1981 treason trial of Mao Zedong's wife and other members of the "Gang of Four," who mercilessly persecuted political opponents during the chaotic 1966-76 Cultural Revolution.

Ji Wenlin, a vice governor of the southern island of Hainan, is being investigated for "suspected severe violations of disciplines and laws", the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection -- the party's internal graft watchdog -- said in a one-sentence announcement on its website Tuesday. The phrase is usually an indication of alleged corruption. Ji, 47, was a secretary and close aide to Zhou when he was land resources minister and then party chief of Sichuan province in the southwest in 1998-2002, according to multiple Chinese media reports.

Apart from cloudy skies and the aftermath of Mount Senabung eruption in Indonesia, it‘s generally calm and peaceful all over South East Asia today. Business as usual, so to speak. And only very few of us are aware that there is an on-going power struggle and breaking up of loyalties within the Communist Party of China ( Xi Jinping versus Zhou Yongkang) , the outcome of which will be very crucial in deciding whether or not to resort to the use of force in resolving the territorial dispute between China And Japan. A couple of days ago, a classified Russian information from a source tied up with Beijing said that one faction of the PLA under President Xi is more cautious in dealing with the territorial row, while the other under Zhou is proposing a full-scale military strike against Japan. And if the latter happens, we in the Philippines will not be immune because we are also involved in a dispute with China over the Spratlys and the Scarborough. Ex-Chinese security czar under corruption probe: NYT PTI | Dec 16, 2013, 05.43 PM IST BEIJING: Pressing his anti-graft crusade to new levels, Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered a corruption probe against Zhou Yongkang, the powerful former security czar, according to a media report. It is the first time since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 that an official who has held such high office has been the focus of a formal corruption probe, the report said. Zhou was once a member of the CPC's most powerful body, the Politburo Standing Committee, and even retired members of that body have always been spared such scrutiny. The main allegations against Zhou emerged from probes over the past year into accusations of abuse of power and corruption by officials and oil company executives associated ...

The People’s Daily, the Party’s mouthpiece speaks of “a persistent, high-voltage campaign” against corruption to correct the party’s style and win people’s support. Xinhua says that probity is “the chief principle in self-discipline while law is a precondition for governing a country. … It is the common wish of all party members and citizens”. It is at least the will of general secretary Xi Jinping, as entire episode of the mediatised case and Sunday’s judgement was minutely orchestrated by the party. Chinese news agency asserts: “Sentencing Bo Xilai in accordance with law fully reflects that nobody is exempt from party discipline and national law, and whoever is involved must be thoroughly investigated and severely ...

SIDE SHOW OFF Bo Xilai. Rumours from sites normally hostile to CPC and the Chinese government have reported that just before Bo Xilai's secret deeds were unraveling, the Dalian businesssman Xu Ming, the one who bought a 2-million Euro house in France for use by Bo's wife and son, laundered off 50 million RMB out of China and used it to conduct public relationships attacks on the families of Wen Jiabao and Xi Jinping. The Zhou Yongkang faction helped gather secret personal real and false information about Wen and Xi friends and relatives to construct two sets of complicated smears. They hired PR professionals to even bribe journalists to put these info out. That money has not been used up yet and attempt to subvert investigations are still going on. Xu Ming has been arrested and has talked to try and lighten his punishment. Lots of plea bargaining going on in US system. A little bit of it in China too.
Chinese Official at Center of Scandal Is Found Guilty and Given a Life Term Bo Xilai, the pugnacious Chinese politician whose downfall shook the Communist Party, was sentenced to life in prison on Sunday after a court found him guilty of bribetaking, embezzlement and abuse of power in a failed attempt to stifle murder allegations against his wife. The sentence means Mr. Bo, the son of a Communist revolutionary leader, is unlikely to ever return to public life, unless there is an extraordinary reversal in his political fortunes. Given the Communist Party’s tight control of the judiciary, there was never much doubt that the Jinan Intermediate People’s Court in eastern China would find Mr. Bo guilty. Even before the verdict, commentaries in state-run news media declared that Mr. Bo’s guilt was clear. Yet until the end, Mr. Bo remained defiant, pleading not guilty and contesting nearly every aspect of the prosecutors’ case during his trial in August. Family associates have said Mr. Bo would most likel ...

FIGHT AGAINST HIGH PROFILE CORRUPTION IS HIGH WAY TO XI'S POWER CONSOLIDATION. I am not a political expert but being political science student; I am trying to understand the movements and changes in Chinese politics in recent times as we Tibetans are not aware of. Because we are very busy for fighting each other. So, I tried to figure out some political chaos and instabilities in China especially after the step down of Mr Hu Jintao in last march. Xi jingping flexes his muscles by talking down on allies of a former security chief. Mr . Xi made a clear statement in recent past that “ No matter who involves , we must investigate to the end, there must be no tolerance’’. Former top leader Zhou Yongkang returns to limelight amid corruption speculation.
Bitter Harvest: China’s ‘Organ Donation’ Nightmare ~ When Wang Lijun made his break for the US consulate in Chengdu on the night of February 6th 2012, he was in a unique position to reveal a series of damaging stories about his superior, Bo Xilai: Bo’s familial connection to the suspected murder of British businessman Neil Heywood, siphoning of Chongqing’s public funds, and shakedowns of local criminal and triad elements. As former head of the Chongqing Public Security Bureau, Wang also knew that Bo, as Chongqing party secretary, had engaged in surveillance of Politburo members, potentially implying that Bo and other players aligned with Jiang Zemin’s faction—most prominently, Zhou Yongkang, secretary of the powerful Political and Legislative Affairs Committee (PLAC)—were thinking about seizing power. Faced with the complexity of China’s leadership transition crisis, most Western editors played up the Sopranos aspect of the sordid tale, fixing on the alleged Heywood murder, essentially t ...

Top China official visits Afghanistan, signs security deal By Rob Taylor September 23 - China has signed security and economic agreements with Afghanistan during a rare trip to Kabul by a top Chinese official, in deals seen aimed at bolstering Beijing's influence ahead of a NATO withdrawal of most combat forces by 2014. (Reuters) Zhou Yongkang, China's domestic security chief and a member of the ruling Communist Party's central Politburo, made an unannounced visit to the Afghan capital late on Saturday, holding talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai at his garden palace. Zhou's visit was the first to Afghanistan by a senior Chinese leader since 1966 and followed a visit by Karzai to Beijing in June when both countries agreed to cooperate on combating extremism in the region. During the talks, held under tight security after violent protests in Kabul over a film which insults Islam, Zhou signed agreements on increased security and economic cooperation, including a deal to help ``train, fund and equip Afg ...
