LPA moves closer to CDO; more flooding expected ... The Low Pressure Area (LPA) which caused heavy rains in several parts in the south is moving closer to Cagayan de Oro (CDO) on Monday, bringing cloudy skies with rains and thunderstorms in other areas of Visayas and Mindanao. As of 10: 30 am, the LPA is spotted at 70 km Southwest of Cagayan de Oro City and is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains over Caraga Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, Eastern and Central Visayas and Bicol Region, Pagasa said on its latest advisory. On Sunday, the LPA have caused flooding in the provinces of Dinagat Islands, Camiguin, Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte and Agusan, and may continue to trigger floods and landslides in the regions, it noted. Moreover, the rest of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will also experience cloudy weather with light to moderate rains and thunderstorms, Pagasa said, advising residents to take necessary precautionary measures against the weather disturbance. Pagasa lifts storm signals in Mindanao By Froilan Gallardo on November 12 2013 7:38 pm CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews/12 November) — All storm signals over Mindanao were lifted Tuesday afternoon after tropical depression Zoraida had weakened into a low pressure area. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), however, said moderate to heavy rain showers would continue in Northern Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula on Tuesday night. Disaster risk reduction management councils in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental province have delayed the lifting of preemptive evacuation until Tuesday midnight. 8 MNLF fighters captured; Malik still in Zamboanga. Manila Bulletin Online 25 September Ustadz Khabier Malik, the most trusted military commander of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding chairman Nur Misuari, is still alive and remains trapped in Zamboanga City. This was the revelation of another MNLF-Misuari faction commander, Salip Idjal, who was captured along with his seven armed followers following a brief gun battle. Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, spokesman of the Zamboanga Peninsula regional police, said the group of Idjal was first trapped by the government troopers conducting clearing operations. “While the government troops were maneuvering to take control of the area where they were holed up, he (Idjal) went out with his hands raised,” Huesca told the Manila Bulletin in a phone interview. But Huesca said they do not consider it as a surrender, noting that Idjal and his men were forced to do so because government troopers were about to storm their location. “Technically, we use the ...
Sulu Archipelago • On January 4, 1638, de Corcuera led a naval and military expedition of about 80 ships and 2,000 troops to attack Jolo, but Sultan Wasit put up stiff resistance. However, Sultan Wasit's kuta army suffered a serious epidemic of tropical disease and he and his chieftains sought refuge in the Dungun area ofTawi-Tawi. The Spanish Army easily occupied Jolo, and a small garrison was left there to control the area. The garrison was withered away by frequent raids launched by Sultan Wasit, and by 1645, this garrison had been wasted away. This was the first time that Jolo had been occupied by the Spaniards for an appreciable length of time. From 1663 to 1718, an interregnum of peace occurred because the Spanish troops were ordered to abandon the Zamboanga Peninsula, and forts south of that—and regroup in Manila to prepare for the impending attack of Koxinga—which never happened. • Hostilities resumed in the 18th century, triggered by the 1718 decision by governor Gen Juan Antonio dela Tor ...

Table Talk By: Mike S. Apostol 100 million for IPED from DepEd This is good news for the Indigenous Peoples (IP) throughout the country the Department of Education has allotted 100 million pesos for IP education capacity building and initiatives. DepEd Secretary Armin A. Luistro also said the funds come with implementing guidelines on its allocation and utilization. This is indeed a good project by DepEd for the IPs in the country. Many programs for the IPs were not implemented and utilized fully for the IPs because a “lion share” of that assistance went to the much aggressive and well-connected non-IP individuals. *** Take the case of the Privilege given by the PNP to IP police applicants where a height waiver are afforded to IP’s but many applicants who used this privilege are non-IPs so it defeats the purpose of the assistance. The Police hierarchy must review this height waiver privilege for IPs because they are abused deliberately, worse some police officers assigned to accept PNP application a ...

A Tale of Two Cities  by Arnold P. Alamon  In my weekly commute for work, I travel between the sister cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. The trip is like a travel back in time for me, for Iligan displays many of the features that I love about my hometown a decade ago when the beast that is Cagayan now was still a manageable and livable city. Iligan has long been overtaken by her obese sister economically but I don't necessarily consider that bad thing.  For one thing, the laid-back provincial feel has long been lost in Cagayan and you can experience this among its people. It is very hard to get a smile much more proper service among frontliners in stores and customer service because everyone is in a hurry, tired, and obviously over-worked. I am reminded of the feel of Metropolitan Manila especially its army of grumpy contractual workers eking out a living day in and out.  In the most important matter of food, it has become very expensive in Cagayan. It is very common nowadays for hole-in-the-wall ea ...

This task demands greater responsibility, greater risks, and even greater consequences when not handled with honor, honesty, and integrity. How many years have Zanortehanon waited for progress? from PDI's Neal Cruz: The happiest news after the elections so far: The Jalosjos clan was thrashed by the voters in the Zamboanga Peninsula. Of the 14 clan members fielded, only one made it: Councilor Rosalina Jalosjos, who was elected mayor of Dapitan City, the bailiwick of the clan. Earlier, the candidacies of patriarch Romeo Jalosjos and his brother Dominador Jr. were voided by the Commission on Elections because of their criminal convictions, Romeo for child rape and Dominador for robbery. The clan tried to expand its hold from its bailiwick to the entire peninsula by fielding six members for various posts in Zamboanga del Norte, four in Zamboanga del Sur, two in Zamboanga Sibugay, one in Misamis Occidental, one in Zamboanga City, and one in Dapitan. All but one of them lost. Congratulations to the Zamboangeños. They finally broke the chains with which the Jalosjos clan had bound them. It is the largest and northernmost of the major islands of the Sulu Archipelago and is located just off the southern coast of Zamboanga Peninsula. Its capital is Isabela City. Basilan is home to three main ethnic groups, the indigenous Yakans, and the later-arriving Tausugs and Chavacanos. Isabela City is the business center and capital of the Island province of Basilan, with its islets lies in the midst of the waters of the Celebes Sea, the Moro Gulf and the Sulu Sea, situated at the tip of the Zamboanga Peninsula. In the ancient times, this beautiful island province was called “TAGUIMA”, while Isabela was referred to by its ethnic groups (the Yakans, Samal Bangingih, Badjaos and Tausogs) as “PASANGAN”, which name it still holds among the natives. In 1844 the Spaniards occupied “Pasangan”, and in July of the following year was named Isabela, in honor of Queen Isabel II of Spain by Don Ramon Lubo, Marine Chief of Zamboanga and Don Catyetano Suarez de Fiqueroa, Governor of the District. During the Spanish regime and the American occupation, Basilan was part of the Zamboanga Province, which then also included the Province of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte.
