The universe growled at me today. So I put on a vintage dress and curled my hair. Put Yves Montand on a loop. I think I won this war.

First and Last time I was at a Drive In was in 1969, with my parents. The film we saw was "Grand Prix", a wonderful film about the world of Formula One sports car racing...It starred Yves Montand, Eva Marie Saint,James Garner,Antonio Sabata Sr.Jessica Walter, Brian Bedford.now what made it special was where the drive in was. It was right off of a highway...so you had the sound from the screen along with the sound from the highway coming at you... It is one of my very favourite films ever made.

Pit stop with Françoise Hardy John Frankenheimer's 1966 film, a fast-paced story of Formula 1 excitement, featured many genuine racing legends on set - and a young French singer by the name of Françoise Hardy... With James Garner, Eva Marie Saint, Yves Montand, Brian Bedford, Antonio Sabàto and Toshiro Mifune in starring roles, John Frankenheimer had put together an impressive international cast. Yet the real reason for the success of 'Grand Prix' - one of 1966's ten biggest box-office hits that year, winning three Oscars - was the thrill of the racing scenes, thanks in large part to help from Phil Hill: he captured real-life footage with on-board cameras at some 1966 Grands Prix, and also drove a GT40 camera car during the making of the film. Other big names making guest appearances on screen included Graham Hill, Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt and Jack Brabham. There was another reason for movie-goers to buy tickets, and that was the actress who took the role of driver's girlfriend Lisa, ...

Monday's film is Jean de Florette (PG, 1986). First in the Provincial French Drama season. Jean is a hunchbacked tax inspector from the city, who moves with his family to farm some inherited land. Unbeknown to Jean, the land is coveted by his neighbours, who plug the spring essential for the farm's survival. Faithfully adapted from Marcel Pagnol's novel by Claude Berri, Jean de Florette is the first part of a beautiful, epic morality tale, with towering performance from Gérard Depardieu, Daniel Auteuil and Yves Montand. Free admission.
Famous Armenians VI Henry Verneuil / Film Director Born Ashod Malakian to Armenian parents in Rodosto, East Thrace, Turkey. When Ashod was a little child his family moved to France and settled in Marseille. He later recounted his childhood experience in the novel MAYRIG, which he dedicated to his mother and made into a 1991 film with the same name, which was followed by a sequel, 588 Rue Paradis, the following year. Henri Verneuil entered the Ecole Nationale d'Arts et Metiers in Aix-en-Provence in 1942. After graduation, he worked as a journalist, then became editor of Horizon Armenian magazine. In 1947 Henri Verneuil managed to convince the established European film actor Fernandel to appear in his first film. Later he also directed other movie stars including Jean Gabin, Yves Montand, Alain Delon, Lino Ventura (all together acting for him in "Le clan des siciliens" in 1969), Jean-Paul Belmondo ("Le Corps de mon ennemi" in 1976 and other films), Omar Sharif, Claudia Cardinale (Mayrig) and Michèle Morgan ...

Instantly makes it sound like an art film. Daniel Auteil and Emmanuel Beart as Ian and Barbara. Yves Montand as Dr Who. The Daleks all to be voiced by Gerard Depardieu. Troops of Daleks trundling down the Left Bank and exterminating people sat outside cafes discussing Baudelaire.
Translating French Pop Songs I fell through the 80’s found myself In a square where the morning mist Had that scent of Parisienne chic In this empty apartment I find the lyric, the chariot race Around the Arc de Triomphe Madelaines on the tables of super- Rich cafes, where I am transported Over airwaves - Cabrel, Brassens, Gainsbourg, stunned by lipstick Gateaux Basque and thick shellac Discs. Smarting from the sting Of cognac, Yves Montand sings About revolution and prostitution Bassline, disco beat blonde vocal Over a slab of keyboard, France Gall Jeanne Mas, forever summer Forever sugar dipped in brandy Coffee so black it destroys your soul There is no exact translation The closest I can get is wonderland

It is going to be a frosty weekend: but fortunately, due to some recent smart buying, I have some films on DVD to watch: Divorce Italian Style (1962) with Marcello Mastroianni. Seven Beauties (1975) by Lina Wertmuller with Giancarlo Giannini. Callas (2007), a documentary by Tony Palmer. Zen (2010), the BBC TV series about an Italian detective, some of which aired on PBS. The Law - La Loi- (1959) by Jules Dassin, with Gina Lollobrigida, Marcello Mastroianni, Yves Montand and Melina Mercouri!!! What a cast!!

"The project of a daily Rouge saw the light amid this effervescence. Lenin had defined Iskra in 1903 as a ‘collective organizer’ that would arouse the whole of Russia. In spring 1975, we launched a national subscription to buy a printing press. The painter Matta gave us a canvas right off his easel. Yves Montand brought out of his pocket a bundle of notes that he handed stammering to Alain Krivine without even counting them. Michel Piccoli stood guarantee for the lease on the photo-typesetting apparatus. Alain and myself had the difficult task of soliciting Delphine Seyrig. For a whole afternoon we discussed the ills of the world without daring to broach the thorny question of the sinews of war. At the end of this over-long interview, it was she who wrong-footed us by producing a share certificate for some kind of printing cooperative (a front for a tiny Maoist organization!)." Today, I'm gonna be old. Going to the shop and getting a regular cut (square in ze bach.) Gonna walk around the art museums to take it in. MARK SAVITT'S REVIEW OF SIREN'S HEART Siren's Heart (ASCOLS, LLC in association with Primal Scene Productions and Cinna Productions) is described as Norma Jean and Marilyn in Purgatory, Songs Marilyn Never Sang. Louisa Bradshaw as Ms. Baker/Monroe presents a woman who has had a lot of time to reflect on her self-analysis. She discovers that she was most truly alive and unselfconscious when she was performing for the troops in Korea. Perhaps live theater would have allowed her to bask in the love and trust beamed out to her immediately by her spectators. The movies always terrified her. The play and original songs by Walt Stepp generally rehash the familiar perspectives on the intelligent but insecure actress and the men who tried to control her.The focus on live performance seemed new as did some comments on Yves Montand as her dream Joe , a relaxed unparanoid Italian (by heritage) lover. Director Lissa Moira and performer Bradshaw let us see how Norma Jean knowingly created the Marilyn persona. This is m ...

Weird how every time I listen to Yves Montand I think of old Soviet movies. No actual or logical connection between the two, still...

Watching Grand Prix (1966). James Garner & Yves Montand have more "game" than Clooney & Pitt could muster in ten lifetimes. Elements of how it was shot sure trigger a giggle from today's perspective. That Eva Marie Saint's plucky schpiel on independence was set to titillate Montand really shows us how far we've come, non?
Romy Schneider and Yves Montand, yes. Yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

Hey New Yorkers: I just saw my friend Jean Brassard tonight in his Yves Montand tribute show "The Kid from Paris". Fabulous! He is absolutely charming, all the way through this show. It's like a throwback to an era when nightclub entertainment was both sophisticated and uplifting. He's got another show on Tuesday- at the Triad on W. 72 St. Do not miss him. You will thank me! Jean and I worked together in "Jacques Brel Returns", so I knew how good he is. Even so, he exceeded my expectations!:

A Carlos Fuentes memory from years past The San Diego Union-Tribune August 12, 1989 Saturday Joe Holley The handsome young Tijuana attorney was deeply involved in an animated lunchtime discussion a few days ago. Focused on a couple of people across the white-linen table, he noticed -- out of the corner of his eye, I suppose -- that the lady sitting to his immediate left had reached into her purse and extracted her silver cigarette case. With hardly a pause in the conversation, he slipped a lighter out of his pocket, scratched up a flame and held it for the lady to light her cigarette. It all took place, you understand, in one graceful and spontaneous motion, in much less time than it takes to read this sentence. She murmured her appreciation, and he continued talking. Sitting a couple of places down the table, I watched the suave little gesture and marveled. Bogart and Bergman came to mind. Simone Signoret and Yves Montand. Do Mexican youngsters of a certain status go to charm school, I wondered. Is it in ...
