The prevailing mythology, is the mythology of the ruling class. In the recent debate in the Guardian regarding the myth of left wing bias at the BBC, one correspondent asked why there were no programmes revisiting the issues surrounding the miners’ strike, upon its 30th anniversary. A letter today adds: “given the late Stuart Hall did most of his broadcasting for the BBC, where were the TV retrospectives commemorating his life? No programmes either to mark the anniversary of the birth of space pioneer Yuri Gagarin on 9th of March.

second floor of the hotel has witnessed the presence of political leaders and a lot of figures of culture: Lawrence of Arabia slept in room 202 (there is a copy of his unpaid bar bill displayed in the hotel); King Faisal declared Syria's independence from the balcony in room 215; Agatha Christie wrote the first part of "Murder on the Orient Express" in room 203. The Presidential Suite was occupied in turn by Charles de Gaulle, King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, Egypt's Gamal Abdel Nasser, Syria's former President Hafez Al Assad, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (the founder of the United Arab Emirates), and the American billionaire David Rockefeller. Other notable guests include Dame Freya Stark, Julie Christie, Mr and Mrs Theodore Roosevelt, Kemal Ataturk, Lady Louise Mountbatten (, Charles Lindbergh and Yuri Gagarin
On April 12, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human in space, making a 108-minute orbital flight in his Vostok 1 spacecraft. Gagarin became an international celebrity, and was awarded many medals and titles, including Hero of the Soviet Union, the nation's highest honor. Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space less than a month later

john kahera what is your advice to Wycliffe Musalia Mudavadi and his epileptic UDF?" 1st I'm grateful that he is no longer weak-leaf no,after eating a tray of quail eggs mixed with Lizard eggs he is now Strong-Leaf Mudavadi. But advising this man on matter politik rekindles memory of the man who kept pouring water in a basket--his efforts were in vain. But I must salute Strong-Leaf for reorienting his objectives & re-branding himself to "Home comings-attendant- in-chief"...his new nonpareil love for homecomings got me tickled. This man has attended more home comings than anyone today in this country's history in just one year. The only homecomings he is yet to attend are those in the moon.maybe because Yuri Gagarin and Joseph Magellan have not thought of holding one up there.otherwise Musalia holds the undisputed title of the highest home coming party attendees in the history of broad daylight. That is good at least he has won the coveted title and may soon find a place in the Guinness book of world records.
It occurred to me tonight that my generation is no longer in charge. People who were newborns when we were finishing high school and college (back in the 1960s and 1970s), are now the commentators on the news, the CEOs, the forty-ish teachers and professors, our nurses and doctors. Our children smile indulgently --'cause they love u--s when we wax rhapsodically about Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; or about The Beatles, or about growing our hair long and *ing in the mud at Woodstock. Except for a few rock bands, our culture is gone and forgotten --although we still impose it on everyone. You haven't lived until you've heard "Light My Fire" as light-jazzy elevator music.. Try this out on your teenage grandchildren: Ask them who the following were: Bob Hope, Jack Benny, Al Jolson, Hubert Humphrey, Princess Grace, Gene Kelly, John Ford, Arthur Godfrey, Alan Shepard, Barry Goldwater, Gus Grissom, Yuri Gagarin, Winston Churchill, George Burns, Bing Crosby, Steve Allen, Norman Mailer, and Jackie Gleason. Time Line of Positive Contributions of HeLa Cells Henrietta Lacks’ cells made unprecedented and lasting positive contributions to the world of science. Henrietta Lacks was found to have cervical cancer in January of 1951. She died on October 4, 1954. HeLa cells were used to develop the first polio vaccine in 1954 by Jonas Salk. At the time millions were suffering from polio. They were sent into space for experimentation regarding zero gravity in 1960. They were also later sent into space with Yuri Gagarin, a Russian cosmonaut, on April 12, 1961. HeLa cells helped to produce numerous drugs for diseases including leukemia, influenza, and Parkinson's. They were also used to develop the cancer drug tamoxifen, and chemotherapy. Her cells were also later used for more controversial advancements like in vitro fertilization, gene mapping, and cloning.

Travel on Space.. The first person in universe who travel on space ever. ON April 28, 2001. An American businessman Billionaire Dennis Tito became history's first space tourist, paying his own way to the International Space Station aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. Forty years to the month after Yuri Gagarin became the first person in space, Tito showed that there was money to be made in human spaceflight -- potentially lots of money, as he plunked down a reported $20 million for his flight.
Here is the Yuri Gagarin's locker, the top spot forever belongs to him. ;-)
When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon, they honored soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin by leaving behind one of his medals.

"Orbiting Earth in the spaceship, I saw how beautiful our planet is. People, let us preserve and increase this beauty, not destroy it!" -- Yuri Gagarin
"I have introduced the essence of memes to the new frontier of space."- Yuri Gagarin
China is kicking some royal butt. They landed a rover on the moon. I looked at all these men congratulating themselves and celebrating in overalls that had words on the back. Some of the words were in English! I am excited that there are now others who can explore space. I was proud to be a human the day the first human went into space. I do wish he had spoken English, but the fact that a man did it was cool too. When I visited the aerospace museum in Alamogordo New Mexico I was both glad and surprised to see so much stuff about Yuri Gagarin. I like it that the museum owners decided to give credit where credit is due. It is so easy to get caught up in the competition and feel bad that we weren't the first all the time. But when Armstrong said what he did, I was proud of him for that. He was an American, but he was more than just an American and he acknowledged that. Good for him.
Morcheeba in the packed Gagarin 205. 1st time here, cool venue. Yuri on the building outside. Audience knows the words to the songs.
Do you know who is the first person who was in the space? Lol — yuri gagarin (??)
It's awful for all of the same reasons that the intro to "Enterprise" was awful. Pretending that Yuri Gagarin never existed? Lame.

THE UNISPHERE 1964 World's Fair; New York, New York Flushing Meadows–Corona Park in New York City has hosted two World’s Fairs: one in 1939 and one in 1964. And those fairs boasted many impressive landmarks, including the 610-foot-tall Trylon spire and the “UFOs” of the New York State Pavilion. But the Unisphere is one of the most well-known—and longest-lasting. Designed by landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke, the steel sphere was, at the time, the largest globe ever constructed, rising 140 feet and weighing 900,000 pounds (including its base). Today, it’s still an icon of the city; try spotting it from your plane when landing at LaGuardia. Designed by landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke, the Unisphere was donated by the United States Steel Corporation and constructed by the American Bridge Company. It is the world's largest global structure, rising 140 ft (43 m) and weighing 700,000 lb (320,000 kg). Some sources say the Unisphere weighs 900,000 lb (410,000 kg), a figure which includes the ...

The USSR sent up animals into space before the first human: Yuri Gagarin. Cats are highly intelligent and were sent into orbit first.
CORRECTION: I do get "froggy" at times, especially when I get handed something from a reliable source (Suzie!). Wait for it... I WAS WRONG. A picture post that I shared seemed to show (and was labeled as such) John McCain hugging Fidel Castro. Since I am a fan of manned space flight, I was shocked when Gwen Crownover Moritz (thanks Gwen) pointed out that it was Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, hugging Castro. My apologies.
It is notable to point out that the names of the 1st man and 1st artist in space contain the word "GAGA". Yuri GAGArin and

There's a photo floating around. People, OUR PEOPLE, are posting it as a photo of John McCain hugging Fidel Castro. It's actually Yuri Gagarin hugging Fidel Castro. Important distinction, since John McCain has never been to space, never been Russian, is not named Yuri and is still alive.
Sorry folks. I've been duped again. This is the real picture of John McCain embracing Yuri Gagarin.

Hi all, One of my eagle-eyed friends informed me that the picture I posted was mislabeled. I am sorry. Actually the picture was Yuri Gagarin, first man in space, not John McCain. Cap is Russian Military not US.

1961 the last time Crokes and Legion met in an o Donoghue Cup Final, Crokes won 209 to 2-8, i was playing center forward. Snippet from my 1,000 word Kerryman Column this coming week. Can you add your memories to this? "It was an exciting period in history. 1961 was a different time, a different age. John F Kennedy became President of America, The Beatles made their first appearance in the Liverpool Caravan Club; Floyd Patterson knocked out the Swede Ingermar Johansson in the sixth round to become heavyweight champion of the world. Burl Ives was top of the Christmas charts with his rendering of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and if you were thinking of going dancing that Sunday night of the o Donoghue Cup final in the now demolished Killarney New Town Hall you would dance the night away to maybe, The Capitol, The Miami, The Blue Aces or The Royal Showband. Is the Sun Rising in the East? December 6, 2013 By Patrick J. Buchanan The scores are in from the 2012 Program for International Student Assessment, which, every three years, tests 15-year-olds from the world’s most advanced countries. For the United States, the report card is dismal. The U.S. ranking has fallen to 17th in reading, 21st in science, and 26th in math. Florida, one of America’s diverse mega-states, competed separately in the PISA exam, and scored below the U.S. average. In the academic Olympics, the American superpower is a mediocrity. Ranked one through seven in test scores in reading, science and math were Shanghai-China, Singapore, Hong Kong-China, Taiwan, South Korea, Macau-China, Japan. Also well ahead of the United States is Vietnam. By and large, Western Europe has moved out in front of us and our close competitors are the Slovak Republic and Russian Federation. Fifteen-year-olds in two ex-Soviet republics, Estonia and Latvia, also posted grades in math and science superior to tho ...
The background for Razzle Dazzle is the historical period of 1960 and 1961. During that period there were events that changed the world forever: the beginning of the Civil Rights movement, Yuri Gagarin as the first man in space, television decided a presidential election for the first time in our history, and G.D. Searle introduced Enovid, the first birth control pill. In the case of Cuba and the Bay of Pigs Invasion, it could be considered America's first great intelligence failure reflecting our innate contempt for other cultures. Sadly, the same mind-set repeated itself in Vietnam, in Afghanistan, and in Iraq at the cost of thousands of lives. "Razzle-Dazzle" is available in print and e-book from Amazon.com.
10 Of The Most Bizarre And Unsettling Conspiracy Theories Basically nothing is real and sea monsters are going to eat you. John F. Kennedy's brain is possibly missing, maybe. The new book End of Days: The Assassination of John F. Kennedy alleges that JFK's brain went missing after his autopsy. Conspiracy theorists speculate it was intentionally hidden to cover up the truth: that JFK was shot from the front, rather than from behind, by Lee Harvey Oswald. The "Lost Cosmonauts" theory claims that Gagarin was the first man to survive human spaceflight, but not the first to enter the heavens. Another cosmonaut, Vladimir Ilyushin, is believed to have landed off-course and been held by the Chinese government, and conspiracy theorists purport over a dozen cosmonauts may have perished in space before Gagarin's flight. R.I.P. M Scott Carpenter. (1/5/1925 - 10/10/2013). Along with Yuri Gagarin, Chuck Yeager, John Glenn, Alan Shepherd and Virgil Grissom, this guy was one of my heroes when I was a kid. 'Godspeed, Mr Carpenter'...
Sometimes I wonder how news services get it so wrong. I was saddened to see that Mercury Astronaut Scott Carpenter died yesterday leaving John Glenn as the sole survivor. BUT, Scott Carpenter is being repeatedly described as 'the 2nd man in space'! He was not. By any reckoning he was the 6th - preceded by Yuri Gagarin (1961), Alan B Shephard and Gus Grissom (both sub-orbital 1961), Gherman Titov (24 hours in space 1961), John Glenn (1962). I guess no one bothers to check even the most basic facts anymore - but I must give credit to the local DC channel 8 news for being the only ones to get it correct. Meanwhile I saw the movie 'Gravity' in IMAX 3D yesterday - a great Oscar worthy film that has to be seen in 3D.

NOTES: Plot elements. I don't aspire to make "Gemini World" as shocking or magnificent as "The Love for Three Oranges". It can't be. All the resurrected characters have been set in motion, and in the second book, they are sufficiently far enough away from the diverging event in 1962 that we need not reflect further on connections and tendrils of history. We are now in a different reality, and it is okay to introduce new players that have nothing to do with our normal timeline. Lord Byron, as written in 2013, is more sedate and docile than I had pictured the character when I first drafted sketches of him twenty years ago. He is a reflection of me, and I suppose my age has a lot to do with the changes. As to the space exploration side of the story, much could seem trite by modern standards, as only aviators, astronauts and aerospace engineers may have suitable appreciation for the subjects in the book. There is nothing in the book that was not already dreamed up by engineers. The difference is the pl ...
I am currently having fun re-reading a series of seven books from my youth “Tom Corbett, Space Cadet” published between 1952 and 1957. The book was written by Gary Rockwell who never existed, but was two authors one Willy Ley the German Rocket Scientist who came to the United States with Werner Von Braun and helped create NASA. The books talk about plastic moving sidewalks, ray guns that paralyze not kill, hyper drive Solar Patrol Space Ships and families living on Mars, Venus and Mercury. These books also remind me of the Science Fiction films I grew up which formed some of the basis for the original “Dr. Who” series with such titles as “Destination Moon” written by Robert A. Heinlein, or the British 1955 classic “The Quatermass Experiment known in the United States as The Creeping Unknown”. Other titles that reflected the United States and United Kingdom’s lack of knowledge about what was out there, but let our imaginations run wild were “Quatermass 2 aka in the United States as The ...
Oh, and By the Way...We're Broke Anthony J. Tarquinto Soon, President Obama and Congress will agree to terms on raising the statutory debt limit, or the "debt ceiling." What will not be mentioned in the negotiations, however, is that the United States of America is bankrupt. In a 2011 discussion about how spending cuts might impact jobs in the federal government, House Speaker John Boehner said, "If some of those jobs are to be lost in this, so be it. We're broke." Two years and one major credit downgrade later, the only thing that has changed is how much more broke we are. As a nation, we're broke. Flat busted. Tapped out. The coffers are empty. We have no money. This chart shows America's debt trajectory relative to Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In May 2012, the national debt started growing faster than GDP, which means we are borrowing at a faster rate than we produce. In The Great Reckoning, James Dale Davidson and Lord William Rees-Mogg warned that "debt cannot go on compounding faster than ...

Something about space and Yuri Gagarin from Awesome Sauce
Between 1957 and 1975, the Cold War rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States of America focused on attaining firsts in space exploration, which were seen as necessary for national security and symbolic of technological and ideological superiority as these Soviet Space propaganda posters show. Russian man Yuri Gagarin was the 'First Cosmonaut'; the first human to journey into outer space when his Vostok 1 spacecraft completed an orbit of the Earth on 12th April, 1961. Based on the life and times of Gagarin, our latest production 'First Cosmonaut' opens in two weeks time at The Factory on Wednesday Oct 23rd. “We were born to make the fairy tale come true!”

Fact of the day: Space is not exactly a foodie heaven. The very first thing eaten by a human outside of earth’s atmosphere was Yuri Gagarin’s unappetising tube of pureed meat. These days, the selection is more varied, but still generally limited to things that can be freeze-dried and vacuum packed. Steaks are irradiated to keep them unspoiled, while seasoning comes in the form of a liquid salt solution. There is hope, however, for the weary astronaut’s tastebuds. An 11-year-old boy in the USA won a national science competition with his experiment on brewing beer in microgravity. His idea was so good it’s being tested by the crew of the International Space Station – if it works then at least they’ll have something to wash their dodgy suppers down with. The Daily Maverick.
Speaking of cosmonauts, as a kid I had a cat named Yuri, after Yuri Gagarin, the first cosmonaut/human in space.

VERY INTERESTING . DECIDED I'LL SHARE WITH YOU ALL. HAPPY READING! Indian mythology and Indian culture has a very special significance of number 108. What is this number represent, and why is it so important? 1) In one minute, we breathe in approximately 15 times, in 1 hour 900 times, and in 12 hours 10800 times, and in a day 10800 * 2 times. A day consists of 24 hours, and if we set aside half the day for our day to day routines, then one can spend 12 hours for recitation of one’s idol. Therefore, the maximum number of times that one can recite “mantra”, or perform *** are 10800. If one wants to obtain 100% benefit of its *** then performing *** 108 times will give you the benefit of 100%. That’s why in a “Mala”, there are 108 beads. It is written in Vedas, that 1 *** corresponds to 1 mala (which has 108 beads), therefore performing *** of 108 malas will result in 100% benefit. 2) Astronomically, there are 27 constellations in our galaxy, and each one them has 4 directions, and 27 * 4 . ...

Here’s Your Chance To Help Blend Earth And Mars Rocks The organizers of the World Space Week Association are working to create an “Earth Master Sample”, and they want your help. Anyone worldwide can send the association a fist-sized rock from their locale. Next will come the interplanetary recipe magic: Once the samples arrive, a tiny bit of each rock will be procured and ground into a powder. The powder will be mixed together, with a dash of Mars meteorite added in. Next, a crystal company (Swarovski) will melt down the combination into 100 crystals. These crystals will be shown off at Yuri’s Night celebrations on April 12, 2014; the event commemorates the first human spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin, which took place on that day in 1961. More importantly, the organizers said, the crystals will stand as a symbol of the importance of doing “planetary analog” research on Earth to better understand the conditions on other planets.

In 19th and mid-20th century, it was just a dream for everyone to fly in the space. This dream became true on 12th April 1961 when Yuri Gagarin of Soviet Union made his first flight to space. Till now a large number of astronomers have been not only to space but have already explored moon and now trying to explore Mars.
Feeling a little bit lightheaded with Yuri Gagarin! :)
Famous Marines John Glenn John Herschel Glenn, Jr. (born July 18, 1921) is a retired United States Marine Corps pilot, astronaut, and United States senator. He was the first American to orbit the Earth and the fifth person in space, after cosmonauts Yuri Gagarin and Gherman Titov and fellow Mercury Seven astrononauts Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom. Glenn was a combat aviator in the Marine Corps and one of the Mercury Seven, who were the elite U.S. military test pilots selected by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to operate the experimental Mercury spacecraft and become the first American astronauts. He flew the Friendship 7 mission on February 20, 1962. In 1965, Glenn retired from the military and resigned from NASA so he could be eligible to stand for election to public office. As a member of the Democratic Party he was elected to represent Ohio in the U.S. Senate from 1974 to 1999. Glenn received a Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in ...
SPOTLIGHT October 4 Sputnik Answer of the Day Which country was the first into outer space? The USSR launched its appropriately-named Sputnik — meaning "fellow traveler" — fifty-two years ago today. The world's first artificial satellite was unmanned, weighed 183 lbs. (83 kg.) and circled the globe every 96 minutes. Sputnik only reentered the earth's atmosphere in early 1958, burning up on the descent. The US lost the next round of the space race when Russia succeeded in putting the first human into space: Yuri Gagarin spent about 90 minutes aloft on April 12, 1961. On May 5, 1961, the US launched Freedom 7 with Alan Shepard aboard. Today also marks the start of UN-sponsored World Space Week, celebrated October 4-10. It commemorates the launch of the Sputnik on October 4, 1957 and the adoption of the Outer Space Treaty, on October 10, 1967. Quote "It's human nature to stretch, to go, to see, to understand. In 1980 Arnold Schwarzenegger arrived to the Soviet Union for three .The reason was the shooting of the movie “Red Heat". The press conference was given. Some topics about the upcoming movie was discussed and also was announced the other reason why Schwarzenegger always wanted to come in Moscow… So, Schwarzenegger has long-standing dream of a meeting with the renowned Soviet weightlifter Yuri Vlasov. Arnold told surprised reporters that in September 1961 when he was a 14 -year-old teenager, Yuri Vlasov came to Vienna for the World Cup in weightlifting. Yuri Gagarin has been the idol of the young Arnie, but the Russian hero Yuri Vlasov , the winner of the 1960 Olympic Games, the strongest man in the world , eclipsed the image of the first cosmonaut. Schwarzenegger admitted that since Vlasov became his idol, thanks to which he was seriously engaged in weight training, and then the athletic gymnastics . Schwarzenegger said: "Vlasov was always there with me . I have flew to Moscow with the one idea insi . ...
Where No Sandwich Has Gone Before The best part about a corned beef sandwich? Everything. They're wonderful. Out of this world, even. Literally. Well, once, at least. The American space program was still in its relative infancy in 1965. Only four years earlier, on May 5, 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American (and second person, trailing Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin by about three weeks) in outer space. The U.S. and Soviet Union, as a symbolic part of the Cold War, spent much of the next decade trying to become the first nation to put a man on the moon. One of the next steps in the American program was to get back into outer space and then, while there, make an "orbital maneuver." Basically, the goal was to demonstrate that the crew of a spaceship could change its orbit intentionally and in a controlled manner. The Gemini-class spacecrafts were outfitted with a system to do just that, and Gemini 3 was the first mission in the Gemini program. It launched on March 23, 1965, spending just under five h ...

Every one remembers Neil Armstrong.first man on Moon. Is anyone know who is the second one.Neil's Co-pilot Colonel Edwin Aldrin. And the third member of that Apollo mission who orbited above is Lt Col Michael Collins who never landed on moon.and the date is 20th July 1969. But the first man on space was Yuri Gagarin of now Defunct Soviet Union on 12th April 1961. It took the world another 9 years to send a man on the moon.
Vostok 1 (Russian: Восток-1, East 1 or Orient 1) was the first spaceflight in the Vostok program and the first human spaceflight in history. The Vostok 3KA spacecraft was launched on April 12, 1961. The flight took Yuri Gagarin, a cosmonaut from the Soviet Union, into space. The flight marked the first time that a human entered outer space, as well as the first orbital flight of a manned vehicle. Vostok 1 was launched by the Soviet space program, and was designed by Soviet engineers guided by Sergei Korolev under the supervision of Kerim Kerimov and others. The spaceflight consisted of a single orbit of the Earth (to this date the shortest orbital manned spaceflight). According to official records, the spaceflight took 108 minutes from launch to landing. As planned, Gagarin landed separately from his spacecraft, having ejected with a parachute 7 km (23,000 ft) above ground. Due to the secrecy surrounding the Soviet space program at the time, many details of the spaceflight only came to light years l ...

Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova; 1st Woman in Space 50 Years Ago! Ready for Mars Fifty years ago, Soviet Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova made history and became the first woman ever to fly in space, when she launched aboard the Vostok-6 capsule on June 16, 1963. The then 26 year old Tereshkova blasted off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, following in the historic footsteps of Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, the first human to fly in space for a single orbit in 1961. Her mission was far longer, lasting nearly 3 days (70 hours 50 minutes) for a total of 48 orbits of Earth at altitudes ranging from 180 to 230 kilometers. She conducted biomedical & science experiments to learn about the effects of space on the human body, took photographs that helped identify aerosols in the atmosphere and manually piloted the ship. “Hey, sky! Take off your hat, I’m coming!” she said in the seconds prior to liftoff. Vostok-6 was her only space mission. But today at age 76, Tereshkova is ready to forget retirement and sign up for a t ...

Not the most useful organization scheme. I'll probably have to transcribe them into an electronic format by category and story relevance.

«The Tree of Life» by Ernst Neizvestny Inside the trade footbridge Bagration, there is a big sculptural composition "The Tree of Life". Its author is a Soviet and American sculptor Ernst Neizvestny. This seven metre high sculpture is the height of his creation. According to the sculptor's explanation, the composition symbolizes the eternal conflict between good and evil and the victory of good over evil. The Tree of Life is "a celebration of human soul and knowledge", "affirming the inseparability of the spiritual from the mathematical, logical and scientific". It was about 50 years ago when Ernst Neizvestny first conceptualized the idea of the composition. The creation has altered many times since then, but the shape of the tree crown has always looked like the form of human heart. Under the branches of this giant "plant" made from bronze and granite, there are hundreds of portraits of the most important historical figures, such as Adam and Eva, Buddha, Yuri Gagarin. The trunk and crown of the tree, br ...

"The energy that holds the clocks together was moving at a different rate." Newton's world of "Time" was linear, and wasn't flexible, and was a property of the universe that enjoyed a happy independence with events in Space and Time. Enter the year 1905; a young 26-year-old unknown physicist took a deeper look a...t this problem. And argued that time and space were two sides of the same coin e.g., when moving bodies (atoms, you, the sun) travel at near light speed (186,000 per sec) the slower they "move" through "time." This unknown physicist was Albert Einstein. This bizarre discovery was called Special Relativity, and declared that essentially everything in motion is relative to the observer! This is exactly a description that energy is measured in units of "time" coordinates i.e different spatial frames of reference. In Minkowski space we have a unification between concepts of space and time (space-time continuum). You seem to not be taking in account the bizarre phenomenology of length contraction whe ...
The more I study Yuri Gagarin the more impressed I am by the sort of person he was. From childhood he seems to have been a trouble-making but exceptionally honorable and clever person. He even waged his own little war of sabotage against the Germans who were occupying his town and as a small boy fought with a German who was attacking his mother with a scythe.

The Earth has a diameter of approx 8000 miles. The actual land mass is only 22 miles thick - except in the very deepest ocean, where it is only 4 miles thick. Beneath that there is molten lava which is so hot that it matches the temperature of the sun; around 6,000 degrees Celsius. Instead of focusing on burning and polluting the surface of the earth, shouldn’t we be looking at reaching this incredible underground powerhouse, and using it - not for greed and narrow enrichment, but for the benefit of entire humanity?

Five Hundred and Twenty Days of Solitude McGrane-Mars500.jpg On June 3, 2010, six men filed through the weedy, Soviet-era campus of the Institute of Biomedical Problems, in Moscow. They made their way past friends, family, scientists, well-wishers and a bronze-toned, gigantic statue of the astronaut Yuri Gagarin before entering a vaulted hall that contained a mock-up of the type of spacecraft that could one day ferry humans to Mars. The men climbed aboard. Behind them, the hatch sealed shut. They didn’t come out for a year and a half. The Mars500 expedition was the world’s first full-length test of what it would be like for astronauts to travel to and from Mars, which is much farther from Earth than the moon. For five hundred and twenty days, the international crew—three members came from the Russian space agency, two from the European space agency, and one from the Chinese space agency—lived as if they were in flight, eating Russian space food, moving through the capsule’s diminutive rooms via ...

The Soyuz TMA-21 is a spacecraft named after a world-known Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin. It was launched in 2011. Its launch was devoted to the anniversary of the first manned space mission, which was conducted by Yuri Gagarin in 1961. The crew of the spacecraft consisted of three persons: Souyz Commander Alexander Samokutyaev, the flight engineer Andrei Borisenko and NASA astronaut Ronald Garan. Samokutyayev, carried a small stuffed dog given to him by his daughter. Hanging in front of the crew, live NASA TV launch footage showed that the dog begun to float as the spacecraft soared skywards, an indication of the weightlessness of space.

The mystery surrounding Yuri Gagarin's death in an aircraft crash more than forty years ago may finally have been solved by a report which quashes decades of conspiracy theories.
THE TRUTH IS TOLD - AT LAST Cosmonaut pilot Alexey Leonov (the first space walker) has finally been allowed to tell the truth of how Cosmonaut pilot Yuri Gagarin died. Gagarin was test flying in a Mig 15 trainer with an instructor. An unauthorised flight by a Sukhoi Su15, behaving erratically climbing in afterburn through cloud, came within metres of Gagarin's aircraft, causing such turbulence at 750 Km/h that Gagarin's aircraft entered into an irrecoverable tail spin and hit the ground, killing both Gagarin and his instructor. There has been much secrecy and speculation about this in the 40+ years since it happened, including notions that they collided with a UFO. Leonov, who was present at the location when it happened and on the review committee, has wanted to talk about it since, just so that Gagarin's family could know the truth, but he has been forbidden to talk. Until now. However he still cannot reveal the name of the errant pilot as he is still alive. That was a condition of permission for this . ...

The honor went to a 4 1/2 year old chimpanzee designated After his historic space flight on January 31st, 1961 the World would know him, somewhat more warmly, as Ham. Ham's flight lasted 16 minutes and 39 seconds and achieved an altitude of 115 miles above the Earth. During the flight he performed tasks that he was specifically trained for. His condition upon re-arrival was considered excellent. Three months after Ham's flight Yuri Gagarin would become the first human to visit space. And one month later Alan Shepard would become the first human American to take the ride. Eventually Ham was "retired" to the National Zoo in Washington and later to the North Carolina Zoo. He died there at the age of 26 on January 19th, 1983

As counterintuitive as it may seem, austere times require audacious goals. When resources are scarce, innovation is the only route to growth. Remember the 1950s, when Soviet Union took the lead in the space race by sending Yuri Gagarin into the outer space on the Sputnik. Instead of panicking, JFK challenged Americans with a dream: “ We shall put a man on the moon and bring him back before the end of this decade.” Ambitious goals elevate organizational thinking. If we want to build a great nation, we must first dream of building a great nation. VIJAY GOVINDARAJAN Prof at Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College, USA
The way we did R&D in aeronautics in 1990 is likely to be completely different from what it will be in 2020. Big data analytics will be the game changer.

WHAT AH? I saw an BBC-discover documentar (year 2012), talking about the beginning of the western "capitalism" in the world... they talked about the spanish with Columbus...then jumping 150 years to the east dutch indies... lol... no Portuguese, when it was the portuguese that fought against the dutch(with 1/10 the manpower, because of our spanish rullers), forgeting that it was the portuguese that arrived 100 years before, and it was the portuguse with less manpower than the dutch that removed the islamic forces in the indic... but that is not history...hilarious... it's like talking about the space run, not talking about yuri gagarin... only talking about Armstrong... that is crazy!

First woman in space ready for 'one-way flight to Mars' Star City: Russia's Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman to go to space, said on Friday she was ready to score another coup and fly to Mars, even if it would be just a one-way trip. "Mars is my favourite planet," the 76-year old told a news conference in Zvyozdny Gorodok (Star City) outside Moscow, home to a cosmonaut training centre. Tereshkova, who became a national heroine at the tender age of 26 when she made a solo space flight in 1963, said she had been part of the group who studied the possibility of going to the Red Planet. "But we know the human limits. And for us this remains a dream. Most likely the first flight will be one way. But I am ready," she said. Under the call sign Chaika (Seagull), Tereshkova during her three-day mission circled the Earth 48 times, her flight becoming a major propaganda coup for the Soviet Union. On June 16, Russia will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Tereshkova's historic flight. In 1961, Soviet cosmonaut Yu ...

History[edit] For centuries, the Chinese had been using rockets for ceremonial and military purposes. But it wasn’t until the latter-half of the 20th Century where rockets were developed to overcome Earths’ gravity. Such advances were made simultaneously in three countries by three scientists. In Russia, Konstantin Tsiolkovski, in the United States was Robert Goddard, and in Germany was Hermann Oberth. After the end of World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union created their own missile programs and Space research emerged as a field of research based on the advancing rocket technology. In 1948-1949 detectors on V-2 rocket flights detected x-rays from the sun.[1] Sounding rockets proved useful for studies of the structure of the upper atmosphere. As higher altitudes were reached, the field of space physics emerged with studies of aurorae, the ionosphere and the magnetosphere. Notable as the start of satellite-based space research is the detection of the Van Allen radiation belt by Explorer 1 ...

A blockbuster Russian drama about the first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, has hit the big screen.
Did you know? On this day in 1961, President John F. Kennedy announces to Congress his goal of sending an American to the moon by the end of the decade and asks for financial support of an accelerated space program. He made the task a national priority and a mission in which all Americans would share, stating that it will not be one man going to the moonit will be an entire nation. On April 12, 1961, the Soviet Union had become the first country to send a man into space with the successful mission of Yuri Gagarin in the spacecraft Vostok 1. On May 5, American Alan Shepard flew into space, but did not orbit the earth as the Russian cosmonaut had. At that time, the U.S. and the Soviet Union were already locked in an arms race. Not to be outdone by America's Cold War rivals, President Kennedy pledged in 1961 to support an American space program that would eventually dwarf the Soviet program in technological achievements and investment. In a speech before Congress on May 25, JFK linked the need for a space pr ...
From Penny4NASA: Nearly 7 years prior to Neil Armstrong’s first steps onto the lunar surface, LIFE magazine speculated on the nature of the Apollo program, its technological output, and humanity’s place beyond what were once our perceivable limits. In their April 27th 1962 publication, the “great adventure” that is the Apollo program is analyzed in detail, merely 2 weeks following the first human spaceflight undergone by cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. How would astronauts get about on the moon? What kind of protective clothing would astronauts dawn on the lunar surface? What kind of space-faring vessel would take them there? And most intriguingly, would permanent lunar habitation be possible? Fueled by space race discourse and the competitiveness of Cold War politics, LIFE considers these questions and more as they encapsulate the momentum of the U.S. space program during the golden era of space exploration and ingenuity. To view the April 27th 1962 issue of LIFE (The article begins on page 47): Congress ...

We are in Moscow, Russia this week to support Iridium's expansion into the country. As space-industry fans, it's nice to see this billboard outside of our hotel for "Gagarin: First in Space" about Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. The space race changed a lot of things for world-relations, and indirectly led to that satellite phone on your boat.
