Yom Hashoah

Yom HaZikaron laShoah ve-laG'vurah (יום הזיכרון לשואה ולגבורה; Holocaust and Heroism Remembrance Day ), known colloquially in Israel and abroad as Yom HaShoah (יום השואה) and in English as Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Holocaust Day, is observed as Israel's day of commemoration for the approximately six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust as a result of the actions carried out by Nazi Germany and its accessories, and for the Jewish resistance in that period.

This is a copy and paste of notes of the Jewish National Fund's "Livni Event".  As you will see, they are not full transcripts but I trust the note taker: REPORT ON JNF UK EVENT WITH TZIPI LIVNI ON NAKBA DAY, MAY 15TH 2014 SUMMARY OF SPEECH BY THE ISRAELI AMBASSADOR, DANIEL TAUB Daniel Taub recently Israelis have commemorated Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Day), Yom Hazikaron (Remembrance Day for Israeli soldiers), Yom Ha'atzmaut (Israeli Independence Day) and Yom Yerushalyim (Jerusalem Day).  These days are the first new days to be added to the Jewish calendar in the last 2000 years.  Jews are re-entering history.  In the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto was found a JNF blue-and-white box.  The people sent to the Warsaw Ghetto were told only to take their most valued possessions with them, so this must have been included among a family's most valued possessions.  Israel is a miracle - a miracle with a fair number of challenges. The demonstrators outside are a group of people that has wiped Israel off the map. ...

The latest from Culpeper's Congressman Rep. I know all of us express our sympathy to the families who have lost loves ones in this terrible natural disaster. This week is also a week where we remember those who lost their lives in the Holocaust. Yesterday, was Yom Hashoah and I know tomorrow there will be a remembrance ceremony in the Capitol and so we keep those memories also in mind. “Recently, I was at Germanna Community College in my district and I was talking with those who lost their jobs. They happened to be meeting with the Virginia Employment Commission trying to find out not only how they were going to sustain themselves in a period of unemployment, but how they were going to get themselves back to work. Several of these individuals are chronically unemployed and the community college system in our state, as in many others, i ...

(JTA) — Popes John Paul II and John XXIII are being declared saints of the Roman Catholic church on April 27, which is also the eve of Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. It’s a coincidence but a notable one. These two post-Holocaust pontiffs revolutionized relations between Catholics and Jews, fostering interfaith dialogue and embedding respect for Jews and Judaism in official Catholic dogma. “These two popes transformed not just the church, but made a bigger impact on the outside world — and on us,” said Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor, a vice president of the World Union of Progressive Judaism and longtime participant in Jewish-Catholic dialogue. “As a Jew, my life, and the safety and security of Jews, have been improved by the actions of these two individuals.” Pope Francis, who took office little more than a year ago, will preside over the solemn ceremony at the Vatican, taking place on the day Catholics celebrate as the Second Sunday of Easter. It was Francis who decided to canoniz ...
Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day. We must never forget the evil perpetrated on the Jewish people under the Nazi Regime. The internationally recognized date for Holocaust Remembrance Day corresponds to the 27th day of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. It marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. In Hebrew, Holocaust Remembrance Day is called Yom Hashoah.

Full transcript of Benjamin speech for Yom Hashoah:
Today is Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Every year at this time I am reminded that it was not only the gas chambers that were responsible for the destruction of my ancestors, or the germans, or the nazis, but the indifference of apathetic bystanders who refused to speak up and say no. Hate is only as powerful as those standing in it's midst allow it to be. Apathy is the real crime. Tonight, tomorrow, next week, next year, when you see injustice, speak up and do something. Do not sit idly by. Hatred cannot exist in a world filled with those who will not tolerate it. Change it. Do something. Speak up.

Below is a prayer for Yom HaShoah, composed by the Chief Rabbi of Great Britain, Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks: Today, on Yom HaShoah, we remember the victims of the greatest crime of man against man - the young, the old, the innocent, the million and a half children, starved, shot, given lethal injections, gassed, burned and turned to ash, because they were deemed guilty of the crime of being different. We remember what happens when hate takes hold of the human heart and turns it to stone; what happens when victims cry for help and there is no one listening; what happens when humanity fails to recognise that those who are not in our image are none the less in God's image. We remember and pay tribute to the survivors, who bore witness to what happened, and to the victims, so that robbed of their lives, they would not be robbed also of their deaths. We remember and give thanks for the righteous of the nations who saved lives, often at risk of their own, teaching us how in the darkest night we can light a candl ...

On this Yom HaShoah eve, we remember the millions who suffered at the hands of the Nazis and their collaborators. We also remember those who remained indifferent to such inhumanity, as well as those who risked their own lives for the sake of others. While we should not allow the Holocaust to define us as a people (or as individuals), we must ensure that this genocide is not relegated only to the history books. We owe it to the victims, their families, our people and to the broader society. There are so many contemporary lessons that must be learned, one of the most important ones being: do not stand idly by in the face of an injustice. As a people we’ve encountered too much injustice. We must utilise our experience and knowledge to prevent contemporary injustices. Yizkor - Remember - Never Forget

Rena Quint was born in a small town called Piotrkow. When WW2 broke out, she was only three years old. She survived the Ghetto, the death marches, and a bout of typhus in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Rena was liberated by the British, but left with almost no memory of her birth family. Eventually, she made her way to the United States, where she built a new life and a family of her own. Tonight, on Yom HaShoah, she told the moving story of her survival to a group of Masa participants at Yad Vashem. Read Rena's testimony in full:
Sharing memories is how we save our history from one generation to the next. Over the 24 hours of Yom HaShoah, take the time to hear stories of triumph over evil. Remember every day that the Jewish People were persecuted as a whole, no matter our philosophical or theological differences, and only as a whole will we continue forward. Am Yisrael Chai.

The Moore family would like to extend love and support to those who recognize this day as Yom HaShoah. We also stand in remembrance of the 5 million others who were also lost to the concentration camps. To the families of both, you have our love.
Yom HaShoah, also known as Holocaust Remembrance Day, occurs on the 27th of Nisan.
Yom haShoah commemorates the lives lost in the Holocaust, but more than that, this day cherishes the lives which survived, reminds us that threats against the Jewish nation are ever-present, but ultimately that we stubbornly refuse to acquiesce to death and continue to march on, both in the Diaspora and in Israel. May those six million who died in the Holocaust never be forgotten.
It's Yom HaShoah, Remembrance Day. Less than 70 years ago much of Europe collaborated to kill over 11,000,000-15,000,000 people, including 6,000,000-10,000,000 Jews, and millions more minorities and disabled children and adults. All while the rest of the world, including in the USA looked the other way or assisted ( IBM, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Bayer Schering Pharma, etc.). With due respect to gold-diggers and sugardaddies, the Holocaust is still the biggest story of the day and let's hope that never changes.
Tonight begins Yom HaShoah, the Jewish remembrance of the six million Jews systematically murdered by the nazi regime. We light a single candle in their memories and vow never to forget: (from URJ) "As I light this yellow candle tonight, I vow never to forget the lives of the Jewish men, women, and children who are symbolized by this flame. They were tortured and brutalized by human beings who acted like beasts; their lives were taken in cruelty. May we be inspired to learn more about our six million brothers and sisters as individuals and as communities, to recall their memory throughout the year, so that they will not suffer a double death. May we recall not only the terror of their deaths, but also the splendor of their lives. May the memory of their lives inspire us to hallow our own lives and to live meaningful Jewish lives so that we may help to ensure that part of who they were shall endure always."
At sundown on April 27, the world observes Yom Hashoah -- Holocaust Remembrance Day. We remember the millions of Jews, Romani, LGBTQ and others murdered by the Nazis. We align ourselves with any and all persecuted & maligned people across the globe. There is no freedom until all people are truly free.
As we approach Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, please keep the victims, survivors, and their families in your prayers.

6:30 pm on my way to AACI for the Yom Hashoah program including the first performance of Kindertransport that they are having. I quickly wanted a bank statement at the mall across the street. Just as I went through security the guard said sorry were closing. I said I'm not shopping I just need to get a printed statement from the ATM. He said no way everyone uses that excuse. No really I tell him, its the truth and just then my eyes begin to tear. Dont cry he says Ill let you in. No I tell him I crying because I proud of you and of the fact that the mall is closing for yom Hashoah. Geveret he said in his heavy Russian accent you are right I never thought about that. This my friends needs no more words as to why we are here. ps When I got to AACI there were over 200 people at the ceremony!

AJC’S RABBI DAVID ROSEN ATTENDS THE CANONIZATION OF TWO CATHOLIC SAINTS David Rosen, AJC’s International Director of Interreligious Affairs, represented AJC live on the ground at the canonization of Popes John XXIII and John Paul II at the Vatican on Yom HaShoah. “It is a very significant event for Jews around the world, because these two popes were really the champions of the transformation in Catholic-Jewish relations,” said Rabbi Rosen.

To commemorate Yom Hashoah, the Holocaust Day of Remembrance, the public is invited to a talk by Hannah Davidson Pankowsky, a Holocaust survivor, on Sunday April 27, 1:00 PM, at the Georgetown Public Library, in the Hewlett Room (2nd floor). The program is sponsored by Congregation Havurah Shalom of Sun City. Admission is free; refreshments will be served. As recounted by Hannah, the Davidson family’s escape from Nazi occupied Poland into the safer Soviet territory, then to Mexico, and finally to the United States, is more than a memoir of survival. Their story is one of a family whose spirit could not be destroyed by persecution, war, famine, or political oppression. Following the speaker, there will be docent led tours of the Anne Frank: A History for Today exhibit.
Yom HaShoah provides time to reflect on the holocaust, not only of the Jewish people, but also of the disabled, LGBT persons, Gypsies (aka Rumani), and others (outsiders, artists) who did not "fit" into the Nazi's vision of a perfect society. Being LGBT, having worked with many disabled persons in my career, having many friends who are Jewish, some Gypsies, and many who are outsiders & artists, when the ignorant of today try to deny the holocaust, I take it personally. You should too. Remember.

On April 28, as part of Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, The Akiva School will host a collaborative performance by Örjan Henriksson and the Dance Theatre of Tennessee. In this way, I hope to honor those who have suffered and died in this indescribable horror and insanity.”

Maya Dayanim's reflection at Yad honor of Yom HaShoah. I can say that, as a 13-year old Jewish girl, Yad Vashem deeply impacted and influenced me. A piece a Yad Vashem that really stood out to me was the Children’s Memorial. Broken pillars line the entrance to the memorial, representing the hundreds of thousands of lives cut short, the children who were murdered before given a chance at life. Engraved into the stone walls is a little boy, Uziel. Uziel was brutally murdered at a concentration camp at the age of 2 and a half. When we saw “the little boy in the wall”, we were able to see that he, representing thousands of other little boys with the same fate, was innocent. He looked shy and naive: smiling, but looking away. This boy hadn’t committed crimes or hurt anyone, yet he was tortured and killed before arriving at his first day of school. The Children’s Memorial is a pitch black room filled with tiny lights. The mirrors covering the walls of the room make the lights seem infinite, ...

My second grader gave us very specific details about entering gas chambers and not coming out. Do the words "nazi" and "Hitler" happen to trigger any of you in any way??? So now I'm sitting here sorting through all the endless levels of disturbing. Holding a space for it all. Weeping it out through magnificent tears. Breathing it into my heart and cleansing it all with the radiant light of Infinite Love and Gratitude. Infinite Love and Gratitude to all affected by horrific events that are occurring now or have ever occurred on this divine planet. We are Pure Love! We are Peace! We are One!

Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed annually on Yom HaShoah, the twenty-seventh day of the Hebrew month of Nisan. This is a time for remembrance, education, and advocacy on behalf of the millions of victims of the Holocaust in Nazi Germany. In unprecedented and systemic ways, this period of genocide and mass murder was rooted in hate-driven political rhetoric and scapegoating that pitted neighbor against neighbor, manipulated religion for the sake of evil, and denied freedom by squashing dissent. Still even as the horror of the Holocaust calls to us from a too distant past, the reality of hate-inspired violence lives all around us. History is constantly threatening to repeat itself, and our faith demands constant vigilance.

Yom HaShoah 5773: I rebember, I will never forget
REPORT FROM THE UN: HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE You may recall that the UN’s Holocaust Program, which began with a permanent exhibit at UN Headquarters, which I worked for years to secure, provides special events three times a year. There is one in the Spring in conjunction with Yom HaShoah, and one in the fall at Kristallnacht. But the main one is in January in conjunction with the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz on January 27, 1945. In addition, in cooperation with Holocaust centers around the world, the UN publishes and/or distributes all over the globe written and digital materials, as well as DVDs. The latest is called “The Path to Nazi Genocide.” It is available in all six official languages of the UN, and will soon be available in other languages as well. A screening is to be broadcast on public television as far away as Lusaka, Zambia. On January 23rd the first two in a week-long series of programs took place. Of these, the first was an NGO briefing entitled “The 70th Anniversa ...

Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah). My grandfather Pepo Tchiprout is 95 and is a holocaust survivor! He was born in Sophia, Bulgaria, in 1921. During the Holocaust he was taken into a forced labour camp, which saved him from being taken to an extermination camp. He was lucky enough to live in Bulgaria where the government made efforts not to collaborate the Germans, and took a range of actions to protect their Jews, which saved his parents and his two siblings. The labour camp was in the south of Greece. They were building roads for the Nazis. He escaped from the Camp, and returned to Sophia, but had to leave to protect his family, and so he returned to the camp for this reason and out of fear for his fellow prisoners. When he returned he was able to sneak back in and join the workers, and it seemed as if no one had noticed his disappearance. He then escaped again in 1943, but was spotted this time. He was fit and a good long distance runner so he was able to outrun the guards. He set out fo ...

My documentary, in memoriam of the Holocaust Day- Yom HaShoah
A book for Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, today: one word, written six million times.
It's funny how sometimes when you look back on your life, the pieces all seem to fit into place in ways you didn't realize at the time. When you grow up Jewish, much of your sense of self is tied up in the understanding that there are many people in the world who hate you just because of who you are. Our entire history -- and most of our holidays -- involve our being enslaved somewhere or killed somewhere else or otherwise mistreated. But nothing infuses into the culture more than the Holocaust. There's something about knowing that many in the world tried to exterminate your people completely that really informs how you live today. One of my earliest memories of the Holocaust is sitting in a service at Temple Beth Am in Randolph to commemorate Yom HaShoah, the Jewish Holocaust Remembrance Day. We were singing a song in Hebrew called "Ani Ma'amin", I Believe. It's a song that many Jews sang as they were being taken away to the camps in the trains. We were supposed to be singing it in solidarity with ...

Can't get into the September 11th stuff. Yes, it is important to remember, but I don't need to see photos of people jumping out of burning buildings, I don't need to see us victimized. I don't understand that. When we observe Yom Hashoah, we don't post photos of the dead and dying in concentration camps. There are many ways to remember but wallowing in the horror and giving those who hurt us another feeling of victory, is just plain self-destructive. I learned that dealing with my own trauma. The more I "processed", the further down the rabbit hole it got. Yes, we are wronged, let's not forget that evil exists, that we triumphed by surviving but to give evil a platform? To re-traumatize ourselves and make ourselves feel vulnerable all over again? To me, showing the towers falling, the people falling, the horror, hearing the screams---ugh. I think the exact same thing when I see images of the bleeding crucified christ around people's necks. Really? If he'd been shot, would we wear a gun? Stabbed, a bloody ...
