Finally we got the Apology from Nature. Hope they would not accept this kind stupid paper, in particular using manipulated data any more. - The news story was triggered by a debate that was already active, concerning the scale of Ye Shiwen’s victory. Such debates have arisen over many outstanding feats in the past, by athletes from many countries, and it is wrong to suggest, as many of the critics do, that we singled her out because of her nationality. The story’s intention as an Explainer was to examine how science can help resolve debates over extraordinary performances, not to examine those performance statistics in detail. Several analyses done by others convinced us that it was fair to characterize Ye’s performance as ‘anomalous’ — in the sense that it was statistically unusual. But we acknowledge that the combination of errors discussed above and the absence of a more detailed discussion of the statistics (which with hindsight we regret) gave the impression that we were supporting accusa ...

I cant understand why everyone is having a dig at this 16 year old ye shiwen girl who won the gold metal for the 400m in swiming and broke the world record the other day, wether she took performance enhancing drugs or not (which i reckon their all on anyway) for someone at that age to devote so much hours, dedication and sacrifice to perform at such a level and to become a champion is just incredible. as compared to the other useless 85% of sixteen year old girls who do nothing but go get drunk of 3 elevates and get fingered on the beach every weekend

Reporters should report facts for a living, but they rarely do. What they are actually doing is to look at the world with their little twisted minds, consequently all the facts they report are twisted. Recently one of the biggest talking points in the media was Ye Shiwen, a Chinese girl who won two gold medals in the Summer Games. She was suspected of doping (without any evidence) because of the "facts": "... ... China's 16-year-old 400 individual medley champion, swam the final 100m freestyle leg of her world record (4min 28.43sec) in 58.68, compared with the 58.65 by Ryan Lochte when he won the same event (time of 4:05.18)" -- says the "The Guardian". Doping or not, I don't really care. What I really dislike is the way the facts were presented, and more importantly the facts that were conveniently left out by this reporter. To me the following two questions are far more important: 1. Is her overall speed higher than Ryan Lochte? (No!) 2. Is her best 100-meter better than Ryan Lochte's best 100 meter? (N ...

Dear Phil, You might have been bombarded with emails about Ewen Callaway’s report on the Chinese Olympic gold medalist Ye Shiwen. Over the last 20 hours, I have received emails from a small fraction of those who had emailed you. If you wonder why a piece in a non-essential section of Nature has brought you so much response, you should be happy to know that Chinese readers place much more weight in Nature news reports than the rest of the world does. If an event is related to science (even tangentially) and Nature publishes a news report, many Chinese readers treat the Nature report more seriously than New York Times. Chinese news media also use Nature news pieces much more than the regular Western news media would. The Callaway report was sloppy at the best and racially biased at the worst: 1) the original subtitle implied cheating on Ye’s part, setting a negative tone for the report; 2) Callaway presented two facts to establish that Ye was strikingly anomalous, but both “facts” were wrong; 3) Cal ...

While we expressed our displeasure at what the Chinese girls did during the double games,we should not condemn the others from the country as if they are all cheats.Just like the case of the 16-year-old swimmer Ye Shiwen who set world records ,the kwailos were quick to suspect doping. But when their very own American 15-year-old Katy Ledecky and 15-year-old Lithuanian Ruta Meilutyte won their respective events ,such speculations died down immediately.Hypocrites of the first degree, wa beh tahan! Outraged by Nature's recent news story and its subsequent shameless defense. Showing Ye Shiwen's story, her picture and the discussion about how to catch dopers in the same article is intentionally misleading at least, and has offended millions of readers. Its editor note published two days later does not help straighten things up, but made me start questioning the value and reputation behind the journal's name.

The doping suspicions surrounding the 16-year-old Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen can come to an end now. Faster, stronger – and high The development of genetic enhancement in animals has led to fears that ‘gene doping’ could be abused by athletes 3, 2012 9:24 pm By Clive Cookson Meet Marathon Mouse. The rodent genetically engineered in the US can run 5km nonstop on a treadmill, compared with an average of 0.2km in its wild cousins. The emergence of animals such as Marathon Mouse has led to fears that genetic enhancement will soon boost human sporting performance. Indeed rumours have been circulating for several years of athletes succumbing to the temptation of “gene doping”. Meanwhile, anonymous accusers maintain that doping with more conventional drugs such as steroids still pervades elite sport, despite the huge clean-up effort made by the World Anti-Doping Agency and the governing bodies of individual sports. Such suspicions gained fresh momentum at the Olympics this week with the performance of China’s Ye Shiwen. The 16-year-old swimming prodigy completed the last 50m of her 400m medley faste ...
People who have gone up in my estimation this Olympics: Ian "the Thorpedo" Thorpe, now commentating for the BBC, for defending Ye Shiwen and pointing out that he shaved a similar amount of time off his PB at the same age and no-one ever accused him of doping. Zara Phillips, for snapping at journalists: "Can we stop going on about my family now? The rest of the team have families, too, you know." Rebecca Adlington, for getting two bronze medals and for giving those who say that silver or bronze is "losing" the contempt they deserve

Though Ye’s fantastic swimming (she also set an Olympic record qualifying for the 200 individual medley) is honestly catching the sports world off-guard, is it really necessary to rob the talented young woman of all credit simply because she comes from a country with a sketchy record for doping?

Is there a reluctance in the West to see Chinese athletes and people in general make 'breakthroughs'? According to this editorial from China's state-run
In this Olympic Games, our Chinese athletes got definately unfair treatment. When our women team cyclist got first, the judge stole our gold medal. We didn't break the rule, our appeal was ignored and we didn't even get some reasonable explanation. Our women's badminton doubles were disqualified. The bug in round-robin format should't be put on athletes. How many four years can they wait?! And our swimmer Ye Shiwen was asked by western journalists whether she took drugs again and again, even after she had passed the drugs test. Where are the so-called human rights and respect?!
Missy Franklin must have more steriods than YE shiwen since she got one more gold medal than YE!
We are a group of Chinese scientists working in academic and industrial research institutions all around the world. We found a news article that published in Nature a few days ago, titled “Why great Olympic feats raise suspicions” extremely disturbing. We feel offended and outraged to see an article with serious scientific flaws and thinly veiled racial and political bias to appear in Nature, one of the most respected scientific journals in the world. With all due respect, we now launch a formal protest against Nature, until Nature retracts this article and apologize to Ye Shiwen and all athletes who may have been offended.
Ye Shiwen is a Chinese swimmer. she won gold medals in the 200 metres and 400 metres individual medley , setting the world record in the 400 metres event
When China's 16-year-old Olympic swimmer Ye Shiwen blew everyone away in her race, people started accusing her of doping. Now that USA 15-year-old Katie Ledecky just blew away the field in her race, are there any news stories saying that she doped as well? Hmm...
One man who knows Ye Shiwen well is the respected Australian coach Denis Cotterell. He's trained Ye and other Chinese swimmers and says he's saddened and sickened by the doping allegations. Denis Cotterell's currently with the Australian swim team in London, from where he spoke to reporter Barbara Miller. DENIS COTTERELL: It's very sad that she's having to go through that. There's been great achievements by people in the sport, it's part of the history of the sport. And talent comes along and makes a good drop and shocks a few people but we generally seem to have accepted it. But for some reason in this case now, it's not, because of the Chinese ex-history and everyone can say that's quite fair but they've had a girl just came in and never been in international competition and wins an Olympic gold medal. Ian Thorpe, no one questioned, Michael Phelps, no one questioned and having worked with the girl and seeing how hard she works and the talent she is it's disappointing that the kid's in the media conferen ...
The world will find out who is the fastest man on earth later today. I wonder if Justin Gatlin wins today, will the media be as quick to utter the "D" word as they did with Ye Shiwen, given his chequered past? Gamechanger contemplates the issue in this article:
Recently Nature published an online article (written by Ewen Callaway that accused Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen of doping based on false and cherry picked data. I seriously doubt the way "the world's most prestigious scientifi...

15 yr old Katie Ledecky wins 800 meters freestyle and is all American heroine, Ye Shiwen does same in 400 medley and is 'cheat': discuss
The last 50m of Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen's 400m medley final took just 28.93 seconds. That's faster than Boris Johnson can run.
Incredible swim from Katie Ledecky! NOW will the American coach John Leonard accept that these things happen and apologise to Ye Shiwen!
Wonder if John Leonard will question Missy Franklin's swim in the same manner he did Ye Shiwen's performance?
This is CLEAR evidence the British olympic officials are NOT conducting the Olympics in an impartial fashion and there is slight prejudice against East Asian countries. South Korea's flag being raised in a North Korean game, the clock not beginning for the Japanese fencer, controversy over the scoring the Japanese men's gymnastic team in third, unfair judging in the Korea vs. Japan Judo match, accusations of Chinese swimming sensation Ye Shiwen doping IMMEDIATELY after her win, and NOW THIS! This is pettie and tacky. From competition to judging, the olympics be conducted in solidarity and unity NOT in this iniquitous and shameless fashion the English have done so far. This olympics should have went to either Paris or Madrid..
Ye Shiwen swam the last 50m of her 400m individual medley final quicker than the winner of the men's race. How 'unbelievable' is this in statistical terms? Get the data
Why can't the American "Celebrate and recognised the extraordinary talent" in China's Ye Shiwen world record gold medal win in 400 m and 200 m individual medley swim at the 2012 London Olympic?; two words "Jealousy and Hyprocracy".
The american official who accused Ye Shiwen of doping was so unfair, that girl worked her nuts off to win that gold!

Ye Shiwen was asked directly if she took drugs. Well, let's ask Ewen Callaway. Did you CHEAT to pass your Statistics101?
So Ye Shiwen continues to amaze and yet the USA still think she's on drugs, they ever thought that it's because she's an amazing swimmer
When Phelps won eight golden medals, we praised and were proud of him, but when Ye Shiwen won two medals and broke records, some media biasedly suspect this unbelieveable accomplishment was because of drug doping. Even when the drug test showed she was clean, some people still said maybe she used some drug that cannot be tested by current techonology. What can I say? Chinese Atheletes are not supposed to go beyond their physical limits and make breakthoughs? This is disgusting, and for these people, you just don't understand what the true Olympic spirit is!
After WADA said Ye Shiwen is clean. Why people still doubt about her? From another aspect, is there anyone believe China have much more advance technology power than the rest of world, specially in the modern medical science, to invent an undetectable drug? I'd rather believe we get a talent girl from our 1.3 billion people. China population is almost 5 times than USA who get Michael Phelps. John Leonard owe Ye Shiwen an apology
After securing a place in the 200-meter freestyle final on Sunday night, Ryan Lochte was asked about Ye Shiwen, a 16-year-old from China and winner of the women's 400-meter individual medley. Ye covered the final 100 meters in 59.68, only three-hundredths of a second slower than Lochte. "It's pretty impressive," Lochte said. - Karen Crouse

Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen became a double Olympic gold medalist at 16. She’s predicting the stars of the future could be even younger.
came across this article today: this: "Burnell, ever calculating, decided early upon an audacious but highly risky route to a gold medal, where the British double would deliberately lose their heat against the French to avoid meeting Denmark, their main rivals, in the semi-final". Doesn't that read funny when London just disqualified four teams (yes China was among them) for doing the same thing? Not encouraging these kinds of tricks but you need to set rules of a game before hand and stick with it, AND not apply such double standards. I have to say that I am under-impressed by this Olympic. When they question you when you win (Ye Shiwen), disqualify you when you lose (Badminton) and put your national flag below someone else's when you are in a tie (Freestyle swimming), can I at least call that a bit chaotic?
It's a good thing that Asian countries are at the London Games: They've provided nearly all the colorful moments to an Olympics that has amounted, so far, to about fifty shades of gray.
