World Sports News Gajdosova bows out in first round Just three Australians remain in the Australian Open after Jarmila Gajdosova joined the ranks of the fallen with a first round loss to Belgian 20th seed Yanina Wickmayer at Melbourne Park. Gajdosova was defeated comfortably 6-1 7-5 in one hour and 20 minutes on Rod Laver Arena, failing to take several opportunities in the second set to climb back into the match. The 26-year-old Australian had a set point in the second set to take the match to a decider, but couldn't convert it. Wickmayer then broke serve immediately afterwards and closed out the set with little fuss. Gajdosova had twice broken Wickmayer's serve in the second set, but was unable to take advantage as the Belgian bounced back each time. Wickmayer, 23, will play Slovakia's Jana Cepelova in the second round. Gajdosova's exit means that of the 16 Australians in the main draw of men's and women's singles, only three remain. Samantha Stosur is the sole survivor in the women's draw, while Bernard ...

SYDNEY & HOBART, Australia - After making the perfect start to the season with a title run in Auckland, Agnieszka Radwanska makes the three-hour trip across the Tasman Sea to finalize her preparations for the Australian Open at the Apia International Sydney next week. In Auckland, Radwanska betrayed no signs of early season rustiness, not dropping a set all week and outfoxing an in-form Yanina Wickmayer in the final. As No.1 seed, the Pole has been granted a first round bye at the New South Wales Tennis Centre, with either a qualifier or wildcard Casey Dellacqua meeting her in the last 16. In a strong top half of the draw, Radwanska is joined by seeds Li Na, Samantha Stosur and Nadia Petrova, as well as fellow Top 20 members Roberta Vinci and Lucie Safarova. Stosur has often struggled to sparkle on home turf, and her first round defeat to Sofia Arvidsson in Brisbane last week was the latest disappointment to befall her in front of her adoring fans. The draw has not been kind to her either, meeting former ...

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - She came to Auckland talking about lifting the trophy, and that she did: Agnieszka Radwanska won her 11th WTA title - and first on the Australian continent - with a straight set victory over Yanina Wickmayer in the final of the International-level ASB Classic on Saturday. Both players had grinding semifinal wins the day before, Radwanska beating Jamie Hampton in a pair of tie-breaks and Wickmayer finishing Mona Barthel off in a third set tie-break - but with the trophy on the line it was the No.1-seeded Radwanska who had more left in the tank, winning 11 points in a row early on in the first set to set the tone and eventually putting the No.3-seeded Wickmayer away, 64 64. Radwanska had never won a WTA title on the Australian continent, let alone reach a final there, but the trend has been broken and the World No.4 now has 11 WTA titles across the world: seven Premier titles (Eastbourne in 2008, Carlsbad, Tokyo and Beijing in 2011 and Dubai, Miami and Brussels in 2012) and four Inte ...
Agnieszka Radwanska has taken out the ASB Classic, 6-4, 6-4 against Yanina Wickmayer.
AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Fourth-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland won the ASB Classic for her 11th singles title, beating Belgium's Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday in the Australian Open tuneup event. Playing her first tournament since October, Radwanska dropped only one set in five matches in the event. "I couldn't imagine a better start to the year," Radwanska said. "It's the perfect preparation for the Australian Open." Wickmayer, who was hoping to add her second title in her third finals appearance in Auckland, saved five match points before bowing to Radwanska for the third time in three meetings. "I'm a little disappointed," Wickmayer said. "But I fought my heart out and I left my heart and soul on the court. I couldn't have done any more than I did."

Brendan and I have seen some GREAT womens tennis over the past couple of days. This early in the year, the players can be a bit erratic. But you can still see the class and athleticism. The top seed and winner Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland is a great tennis player and has more power than you would expect. She’s 5' 8" and weighs 56 kg. She had a real battle today with Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium who’s 6' and 68 kg (who hit a lot of winners, but also made a lot of unforced errors). Photos below of Brendan posing against advertising hoards (of Agnieszka Radwanska and Julia Goerges) plus a photo of us with semi-finalist Mona Barthel of Germany who’s 6' 1" and weighs 70 kg.

AUCKLAND, New Zealand - Agnieszka Radwanska and Yanina Wickmayer became the first two WTA finalists of the year on Friday afternoon, battling into the title match at the ASB Classic. The No.3-seeded Wickmayer was the first to move through to the final two, holding off big-serving No.8 seed Mona Barthel, 64 16 76(3). After taking the first set, Wickmayer was blown out in 21 minutes in the second set; but she regrouped just in time for a third set that was dominated by the server, with no breaks at all - in the breaker it was all Wickmayer, who stormed out to a 6-1 lead and hung on. "It was really tough to get a rhythm on her serve - it's really tough to read, and when she served a bit slower the wind was taking it," Wickmayer said of the Barthel serve, which produced 12 aces. "I managed to stay mentally strong in the tie-break - I'm happy with the way I handled that pressure." Radwanska, the No.1 seed, followed with another tough win, beating Jamie Hampton, 76(4) 76(3). Playing in her first WTA semifinal, ...
