Roger Federer maintained his record of never having lost in the Australian Open first round Monday as he started his quest to become only the second man in Australian Open history to win five titles. Roy Emerson won his sixth crown in 1967. The second seed, a winner of 17 Grand Slam championships, defeated Yen-Hsun Lu 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 during the night session on Rod Laver Arena. He will next challenge Simone Bolelli, who was a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 winner over Juan Monaco. Federer, who has reached the Australian Open semi-finals for 11 straight years, struck 26 forehand winners in the pair's third meeting. Lu, who won his third ATP World Tour doubles title at the Aircel Chennai Open (w/Marray), could not convert any of his four break point opportunities. The 33-year-old Federer captured his 83rd tour-level title at the Brisbane International presented by Suncorp (d. Raonic) for his 1,000th career match win. Federer’s coach, Stefan Edberg, the 1985 and 1987 Australian Open champion, was celebrating his 49th bi ...

Novak Djokovic CLINCHES 40TH CAREER TITLE IN BERCY: World No. 2 Novak Djokovic joined elite company on Sunday, becoming the 15th player in the Open Era to win 40 ATP World Tour titles. Djokovic denied David Ferrer in his bid to retain his BNP Paribas Masters crown, ousting the Spaniard 7-5, 7-5 in one hour and 52 minutes to hoist his second trophy in Paris-Bercy. The victory gave him his 200th match win at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 level as well. Djokovic is just the third active player to enter the 40-title club, along with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. It was the Serb’s sixth crown of the year and 16th Masters 1000 title. He was victorious at the Australian Open as well as in Dubai, Monte-Carlo, Beijing and Shanghai in 2013. "I am definitely playing the best tennis this year now," Djokovic said. "I'm playing on a very high level and have lots of confidence in myself, in my game." The 2009 Paris champion kept alive his slim hopes of finishing year-end World No. 1 for a third consecutive year as ...
Paris Masters Tennis - World number one Rafa Nadal broke the stubborn resistance of Poland's Jerzy Janowicz's to win 7-5 6-4 and reach the last eight of the Paris Masters. In the semi-finals of the Paris event - one of only three Masters titles the Spaniard has yet to win - Nadal faces local favourite Richard Gasquet who, along with Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, have completed the ATP World Tour Finals line-up. Both players won their third-round matches at Bercy but it was Canadian Milos Raonic's defeat by Tomas Berdych that sent them into next week's season-ending showdown in London. They join Nadal, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Juan Martin Del Potro, Berdych and Roger Federer in next week's showpiece. All eight reached the Paris Masters quarter-finals on Friday. World number two Djokovic and 17-times Grand Slam champion Roger Federer, who is ranked sixth, also advanced. Nadal, who has yet to win the Miami and Shanghai Masters either, broke decisively in the 11th game of the opening set and, after an early ...

Roger Federer might not qualify for the World Tour Finals
This is a little late but I've been looking at my predictions from the beginning of the year for the Grand Slam championships this year and they've been surprisingly accurate.   2013 Australian Open: Novak Djokovic defeats Andy Murray. (Correct)   2013 French Open: Rafael Nadal defeats Roger Federer. (Correct champion, incorrect runner up)   2013 Wimbledon: Andy Murray defeats Novak Djokovic. (Correct)   2013 US Open: Andy Murray defeats Juan Martin Del Potro. (???)   I also predicted the year end top four players would be as such: 1. Novak Djokovic 2. Andy Murray 3. Roger Federer 4. Rafael Nadal   So so far I've been pretty accurate with the mistake of the French Open runner up being David Ferrer instead of Federer and it seems very unlikely Federer will make it back up to three before the year ends but I'm pretty proud of the Australian Open and Wimbledon predictions. My next prediction is that the World Tour Finals will be a close match between Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic which Murray will win ...
Young guns Bernard Tomic of Australia and Somdev Devvarman of India have set their sights on making a major impact at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships later this month.   The two exciting youngsters will hope to make a strong bid for the title by upsetting the established names who will be competing as favourites, including defending Dubai champion Roger Federer, world number one and Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, two-time Wimbledon semi-finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 2009 US Open winner Juan Martin Del Potro and 2012 Davis Cup winner Tomas Berdych.   Twenty-year old Tomic has just come off a phenomenally successful Australian hardcourt season where he thrilled home fans by winning all his singles matches, including against Novak Djokovic, at the Hopman Cup, claiming his first ATP World Tour title in Sydney and then drawing praise from Federer after they clashed in the third round of the Australian Open.   Devvarman is seven years Tomic’s senior, but he is still young in pro Tour e ...

SKIER VONN "INSPIRED" BY FEDERER Olympic downhill skiing champion Lindsey Vonn recently took to the internet to reveal why she is inspired by World No. 2 Roger Federer both as an athlete and as a person. “The way he keeps fighting back to dominate his sport personally inspires me,” explained Vonn. “I think he's legitimately one of the greatest athletes of all time.” The American skier had backed Federer for Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year award, which was announced today. The 2012 ATP World Tour season saw Federer wrest back the No. 1 South African Airways ATP Ranking from Novak Djokovic’s grip for a time, with the year-end honours going down to the wire, and win his 17th Grand Slam championship at Wimbledon (d. Murray). At 30, going on 31, it was a feat that most impressed Vonn, who had met with Federer at Roland Garros. It is not just Federer’s tennis skills that have impressed Vonn. Recipient of the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award for the eighth time in this year’s ATP Worl ...
