Did you know, in Wisconsin *** couples can get "half married" by way of a Domestic Partnership, where they receive very limited rights? Wisconsin Family Action thought even that gave *** people "too many rights" and asked the Wisconsin Supreme Court to take away the little rights *** people have. That was in 2009. Today, the State Supreme Court ruled it won't take those rights away. Sorry Wisconsin Family Action, it's 2014 now and a majority of Wisconsinites agree that love is love and it belongs to everybody. (You should also change your organization's name since you do the exact opposite of helping families).
On today's Weekday Report: • The Wisconsin Supreme Court issued three landmark rulings this morning. • A large group of citizens came together in Pennoyer Park Wednesday to voice their displeasure with the proposed plan to tear out Kennedy Drive, replacing it with a walking path. • Local taxpayers are ultimately on the hook for $1,000 dollars worth of clean-up costs after extensive graffiti done at Peorio Park last week.

Today the Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld the state’s domestic partnership registry as constitutional, bringing a joyful end to a long legal battle by Lambda Legal on behalf of Fair Wisconsin and five intervening defendant couples.
Insane. The Wisconsin Supreme Court just ruled that many registered voters won't be allowed to vote, while in Florida, doctors can't talk to their patients about threats to their health. This 'free country' is becoming less free by the day.
Clearly, the State of Wisconsin is NOT a place I will ever visit or support. The Wisconsin Supreme Court reaffirmed the same-sex ban voted and approved in 2009 in that state. They really ARE cheese heads!!
William Rhenquist: “I BELIEVE THAT THE CREATION OF AN INDEPENDENT CONSTITUTIONAL COURT, WITH THE AUTHORITY TO DECLARE UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAWS PASSED BY THE STATE OR FEDERAL LEGISLATURES, IS PROBABLY THE MOST SIGNIFICANT SINGLE CONTRIBUTION THE UNITED STATES HAS MADE TO THE ART OF GOVERNMENT.” Think about the ability of the Wisconsin supreme court justices to impartially arbitrate the legislature's laws, when many in today's majority are bankrolled by the very same financiers who wrote the law and got the legislators elected. Whose interests are being furthered?

Today’s anti-worker ruling was not surprising considering the partisan Wisconsin Supreme Court that, time and time again, has acted more like politicians in robes than as impartial arbiters of the law. Their opinion will continue to negatively impact communities across Wisconsin by limiting the freedom of our hard-working neighbors to negotiate with their employers for fair wages and safe working conditions. Our workers are the builders of our economy and the backbone of our communities. Rather than hampering their ability to create opportunity, we should be giving them proper workplace safety measures and the basic freedoms needed to achieve the American Dream. While today’s ruling mirrors extreme efforts by Gov. Walker and legislative Republicans to undermine our workers’ right to be treated with respect and dignity, Senate Democrats will continue to stand up for the rights and freedoms of Wisconsin workers and build an economy that works for all of us.

Court Upholds Parents' Convictions In Prayer Death--Yahoo News upholds parents' convictions in prayer death TODD RICHMOND July 3, 2013 4:44 PM MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A mother and father who prayed instead of seeking medical help as their daughter died were properly convicted of homicide, the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Wednesday in a decision that dramatically limits legal immunity for parents who turn to God rather than science to heal their children. The decision marks the first time a Wisconsin court has addressed criminal culpability in a prayer treatment case where a child died. The court ruled 6-1 that the state's immunity provisions for prayer treatment parents protect them from child abuse charges but nothing else, opening the door to a host of other counts. "No one reading the treatment-through-prayer provision should expect protection from criminal liability under any other statute," Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson wrote for the majority. Most states, including Wisconsin, created exemptions f ...
July 3, 2013 Cardinal Dolan and the Sexual Abuse Scandal By THE EDITORIAL BOARD, NY Times "Tragic as the sexual abuse scandal in the Roman Catholic Church has been, it is shocking to discover that Cardinal Timothy Dolan, while archbishop of Milwaukee, moved $57 million off the archdiocesan books into a cemetery trust fund six years ago in order to protect the money from damage suits by victims of abuse by priests. Cardinal Dolan, now the archbishop of New York, has denied shielding the funds as an “old and discredited” allegation and “malarkey.” But newly released court documents make it clear that he sought and received fast approval from the Vatican to transfer the money just as the Wisconsin Supreme Court was about to open the door to damage suits by victims raped and abused as children by Roman Catholic clergy. “I foresee an improved protection of these funds from any legal claim and liability,” Cardinal Dolan wrote rather cynically in his 2007 letter to the Vatican. The letter was release ...

CAUS Chalkboard Fight for Justice Many of us are tired of hearing that the next election is the most important election of our lives, even when we know it's true. I know I am. I think it is better to acknowledge that every election from now on is crucial; fall or spring, primary or general, even-numbered year or odd-numbered year. Governor Scott Walker has shown us what can happen if we do not vote. He and his allies are always in attack mode, and we, our profession, our workplaces, our students and our communities are the targets. Walker is not alone. He is part of a national movement to undermine, eliminate and privatize public service, and that movement is as strong in our state as it is anywhere. This April's election for Wisconsin Supreme Court is one such crucial election. So is the election for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. Throughout the CAUS area and throughout the state there is a lot riding on the outcomes of school board elections and school referendum initiatives. As for the Sup ...

From Madison-Pro: A bill that would impose new fees on public records is moving quickly through the Legislature. AB 26 is scheduled for a hearing today, Feb. 27, in the Assembly Committee on Government Operations and State Licensing. The bill would overturn a unanimous Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling prohibiting government agencies from charging fees to review public records and decide what information to black out. The Madison pro chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists believes the bill is unnecessary and will negatively affect the ability of citizens and the media to obtain public records. The bill calls for a new tax on public information. Taxpayers already pay the salaries of government workers who maintain, review and redact records. AB 26 would force taxpayers to pay for these costs -- twice. Think of it this way: Your local government uses your tax dollars to plow snow-filled roads, maintain parks and provide police services. You’re not charged extra when the plow comes down your stree ...

I found this on Internet: School prayer prior to 1962 The issue of school prayer has been hotly debated in the United States since the early 1900s. In the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries, schools in certain localites of the country customarily opened with an oral prayer or Bible reading.[2] Religious minorities would sometimes object to the distinct observations performed in the local schools. For instance, in the Edgerton Bible Case (Weiss v. District Board (1890)), the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in favor of Catholics who objected to the use of the King James Bible in Wisconsin public schools. This ruling was based on the state constitution and only applied in Wisconsin, but, like other challenges elsewhere in the country, provided a precedent for federal rulings to come later.[3] The legal climate for school prayer in the US began to change in 1955, and when the New York Board of Regents developed a prayer recommended (but not required) for the school districts under its purview.[1] Seven years l ...

There ougt to be a law in every state!! DEADBEAT DOPE: Corey Curtis, 44, of Racine, Wisc., pleaded no contest to one count each of felony bail jumping, and failure to pay child support -- over $90,000 for his nine kids from six women. Judge Tim Boyle had a dilemma. "This has come up before," he said at the sentencing. "It's too bad the court doesn't have the authority to sterilize." Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Sommers pointed out that a Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling found that a judge may, as a condition of a person's probation, order the defendant not to have another child unless he can show he can support that child. "I will make that a condition of the probation," Boyle said immediately, sentencing Curtis to serve three years' probation. "He is not to procreate until he can show he can provide for them," Boyle said, and added that he must also provide for all nine of his current children. His defense attorney objected, saying that condition of probation was not recommended in Curtis' "pre- sen ...

Ah, the first Monday in October. The Supreme Court begins its new term. Anything could happen: a new twist on the embedded jurisdiction doctrine; a re-interpretation of the sale-and-purchase rule under section 16(b) of the Securities Act of 1933; a re-examination of whether trees have standing under the Environmental Policy Act; a fist-fight between a male conservative and female liberal -- no, wait, that only happens on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Oh, well. Just the thought of it still leaves me vibrating with excitement.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court says it won't bypass the Court of Appeals -- a setback for Republicans who wanted the photo ID requirement in place for November's elections.
It's a joke that a liberal judge from, shockingly enough, Dane County thinks he can overturn Act 10 because it violates free speech. Absolute joke! The appeal will be in front of the Wisconsin Supreme Court soon enough and the law will remain in place, but this just goes to show you that teachers UNIONS do not care what the tax payers think, they want to keep hold of their power any way possible. We had a gubernatorial election, a supreme court justice election, state senate recall elections, AND gubernatorial recall election and EVERY TIME the people of Wisconsin voted with Scott Walker and the reforms he stood for. They are not about to back down because Judge Juan Colas tried to sneak this in at 445pm on a Friday.
