"Labels are for filing. Labels are for clothing. Labels are not for people." – *** Martina Navratilova   Ms. Navratilova is a *** Sure, she’s also a famous tennis player, winning the Wimbledon Championships a record nine times. But other than being a champion, a tennis player, a record breaker, a breast cancer survivor, a resident of Florida and an activist, she’s also a ***   My guess is that she made the aforementioned quote in some sort of context involving sexual orientation. For whatever reason, being labeled a *** must have been some sort of stigma-bearing title for her, and so she throws out this gem. Labels are for filing folders and clothing, but certainly not for people. I imagine if Ms. Navratilova was looking to collect her winnings and the apathetic, minimum-wage teenager who writes the checks didn’t know from Janet Reno, I imagine she wouldn’t mind throwing out the label of “tournament champion” to make sure her check had enough zeroes behind it.   Contrary ...

Here's a selection of recent search stats, taken from a range of sources, including our UK Search Engine Marketing Benchmark Report 2013, the Internet Statistics Compendium, and others. Topics covered include mobile search, social signals and rankings, PPC and mobile CTRs... Google+ and search rankings A report by Searchmetrics shows a strong correlation between a site's social signals and its ranking in Google SERPs. Websites that rank in the top positions for Google usually have a large number of social signals, with Google+ apparently having the biggest impact. The report is based on analysis of 10,000 search terms from Google UK, using the first three pages of results. It’s important to point out that this is a correlation rather than causation, so we can’t necessarily say that social signals definitely lead to higher search rankings. But it does seem to suggest that there’s some relationship between the two. 51% of agencies say Google+ has no impact on search campaigns The use of G+ was explore ...

Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt will look to cap off a terrific week at the Brisbane International by upsetting all time great Roger Federer in the final. Join us for live scores and commentary from 4.30pm AEDT. Hewitt is appearing in his first ATP tour final on Australian soil since 2005 – the year that saw him reach the Australian Open final. For the first time in many years, Hewitt is playing with 100 percent fitness and he has certainly showed enough at the Brisbane International to suggest that he will be a dangerous floater in the men’s draw come the Australian Open. As per usual, Hewitt showcased determination and pure grit to come from a set down and beat Kei Nishikori in three tough sets in the semi-final. Played in grueling heat, Hewitt had to dig deep to eventually win in three sets against a player eight years his junior. Having beaten accomplished ATP players Feliciano Lopez and Nishikori this week, Hewitt will now have to produce something special to upset Federer. Federer has a domi ...

It was sport at its highest, tennis as war. One young man in extremity – at the utter limits ofmental, bodily endurance – pursuing his dream, buckling under decades of anation’s expectations, every nerve and cell in baked, strung-out agony as hehurled his racket, just one more time, at a floating ball in temperatures thatwould fry an egg… And everyone tensed just a little in their seats, leaned forward, caught their breath... everyone watching, across the nation, coiled with Andy Murray in that moment… But not quite everyone. In a cold, long-planned act, one man’s pudgy fingers snuck in the handbag of his long-suffering wife, drew forth umpteen square feet of blue-and-white polyester… in a move as cold as lifting an assassin’s rifle. To shoot down another man’s moment…. to make it his own. And thus, at the instant Andy Murray won the Wimbledon Championships, buried seventy-seven years of history, laid to rest the shade of Fred Perry and – after seventeen years of pain – re-defined ...

"What I remember most from winning Wimbledon at 17 was that people suddenly looked at me differently - they thought that I was from planet Mars. They thought that I had done something I wasn't supposed to do, something that shouldn't have been possible. But I did it. And then I did it at 18, just to make a point," Becker said. What has shocked you more at the Wimbledon Championships? Nadal's, Federer's, or Sharapova's exit?
2000s Sampras reached the semifinals of the Australian Open in early 2000 (falling to the eventual champion Agassi in a five-set match) and won the Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida for the third time in March. He then won a record-breaking 13th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, battling through tendonitis in his right shin and a painful back injury in the process. This victory was his eighth consecutive win in a Grand Slam final (starting at 1995 Wimbledon), which remains a record in the Open Era. After this victory, Sampras did not win another title for more than two years. He lost in the finals of the 2000 and 2001 US Open to Marat Safin and Lleyton Hewitt, respectively, leading many to speculate that Sampras would never capture another major title. At the 2001 Wimbledon Championships, Sampras lost to Roger Federer, who was 19 at the time, 6–7(7), 7–5, 4–6, 7–6(2), 5–7, in the fourth round, ending Sampras's 31-match winning streak at Wimbledon. The match also marked the first and only time ...

Andy Murray is powering through 2013 Andy Murray's victory at the Queen's Club sets him up perfectly for the Wimbledon Championships Andy Murray's performance at The Queen's Club this week is shaping up to be the perfect preparation for a Wimbledon Championships just around the corner. A hard fought final against defending Marin Cilic ended with a 5-7 7-5 6-3 victory, following an even more impressive victory over Jo-Wilfred Tsonga 4-6 6-3 6-2 in the semis. The Scotsman has looked confident and calm, very different from the man we saw twice last year break down on Centre Court. His first outing on Centre Court came after a 4-6 7-5 6-3 6-4 defeat to the Swiss tennis icon Roger Federer, although on the day Murray was lauded for being the first Briton to contest the single's final since Bunny Austin in 1938. After the match an unusually emotional Murray gave an even more unusually passionate speech about how grateful he was for the support that the British public had offered him, and dismissed the deep-roote ...
