I imagine that they would tell us many stories of the escapades of most of the old movie stars in their starring roles. They would tell about the adventures of The Lone Ranger, Wild Bill Hickok, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Tex Ritter as they went about their business of ridding the old Wild West of its bad guys. Those bad guys wearing the black hats had no chance against these cowboy heroes of bygone days. The walls would tell of Humphrey Bogart pulling the African Queen through the water in order to save his love interest, Katharine Hepburn, on board the boat. They would tell us of how Moses led the Israelites t ...

Jul 17, 1870: Wild Bill Hickok kills a soldier A drunken brawl turns deadly when "Wild Bill" Hickok shoots two soldiers in self-defense, mortally wounding one of them. William Hickok had earned his reputation as a gunslinger a decade earlier after shooting three men in a gunfight in Nebraska. He parlayed his standing as a sure-shooting gunman into a haphazard career in law enforcement. In 1869, he was elected interim sheriff of Ellis County, Kansas. Hays City, the county seat, was a rough-and-tumble frontier town, and the citizens hoped Hickok could bring order to the chaos. Unfortunately, after Hickok had killed two men in the line of duty after just five weeks, they concluded that he was too wild for their tastes and they elected his deputy to replace him in November. Unemployed, Hickok passed his time gambling, drinking, and occasionally working as a hunting guide. He quickly became bored and was considering taking work at the nearby Fort Hays as an army scout. On this day in 1870, Hickok had been drin ...

This Day in History (2 events). American Revolution Jun 1, 1779: Benedict Arnold is court-martialed (What envy and jealousy cause-TS.) The court-martial of Benedict Arnold convenes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After a relatively clean record in the early days of the American Revolution, Arnold was charged with 13 counts of misbehavior, including misusing government wagons and illegally buying and selling goods. Although his notorious betrayal was still many months away, Arnold's resentment over this order and the perceived mistreatment by the American Army would fuel his traitorous decision. Abruptly interrupted at its outset by a British attack north of New York City, the court-martial did not get underway again until December 23 in Morristown, New Jersey. Although Arnold was cleared of most charges, General George Washington issued a reprimand against him, and Arnold became increasingly angered. While on a trip to the important West Point base to make sure that it could withstand a British attack, Arn ...

Director John Ford's first major success as a director was the historical drama The Iron Horse (1924), an epic account of the building of the First Transcontinental Railroad. It was a large, long and difficult production, filmed on location in the Sierra Nevada. The logistics were enormous—two entire towns were constructed, there were 5000 extras, 100 cooks, 2000 rail layers, a cavalry regiment, 800 Indians, 1300 buffalo, 2000 horses, 10,000 cattle and 50,000 properties, including the original stagecoach used by Horace Greeley, Wild Bill Hickok's derringer pistol and replicas of the "Jupiter" and "119" locomotives that met at Promontory Point when the two ends of the line were joined on 10 May 1869.

Our first show at Bowery Electric is on Wild Bill Hickok's birthday. I think this bodes well.
Day 15, left Gillette, WY in light rain, snow and fog. And way too early for Bella the Brave to be up. Bella had slept in her rightful place, head of the bed against the pillows, and was in no mood to get up. Bella and I are kindred spirits, Edna unfortunately.. Umm, better not go there. Drove east on I-90 amidst mountains, rolling prairie, badlands, rushing mountain rivers, herds of pronghorn and mule deer. Arrived at Devil's Tower only to find most of the Tower obscured by clouds. Took a few photos, watched the prairie dog town, irritated a Wyoming rancher when we stopped in the road to photograph a wild turkey. Edna shopped for Devil's Tower souvenirs for the grandsons...retail therapy. Clouds on the high passes and fog in the valley cut visibility to a few dozen yards and our speed down to about 30 mph. Finally got to I-90 and drove past small towns with names to conjure with like Sundance and Lodge Grass. Entered South Dakota and toured Deadwood, legendary gold camp, site of Wild Bill Hickok' ...

As we honor and remember Mothers this beautiful day, I reflect back on my own childhood and the very demanding role played by our Mothers. By life's good rule, our Mother was the first in chain of command and the first person we turned to with our childhood problems and she was the one that could always make things better. My Dad was often away from home doing construction work during the summer months and Mom saw to it that we were not deprived of the fun things we would have done had he been there. She assumed the role of playmate, fishing partner, cookie maker, and would make the best kool-aid in the whole wide world that was served in the different colored aluminum glasses. She dressed us for church, combed our hair. could diagnose any childhood sickness, and could tell in an instant after your bath if you had bathed properly. It was only nineteen months difference in me and my younger brother's age and boys will get to rambunctious, for as much as she loved us, it made no difference if we were outsid ...
1941...Jean Hickok McCormick applied for old-age pension and claimed to be the child of Calamity Jane and Wild Bill Hickok. She claimed to have been put up for adoption and that she had letters from her mother proving who her father was. The trouble is there is no record of her adoption or the adoptive family, no record of a Calamity Jane/Hickok marriage, and Calamity Jane was known to be illiterate and could not write. So it wasn't just men who tried to lay a claim to a famous part of Old West history.
I am waking this morning in Deadwood, SD. Last night a couple of drinks with young CPT Abbott in the saloon, claiming Wild Bill Hickok's legacy. The chair he was shot in is hanging on the wall. "Saloon Number 10" My first few minutes there included witnessing a good old cowboy fight. One cowboy vs 4 red shirted security men. It is good to be an American.

J. Lee Thompson’s The White Buffalo, based on the novel by Richard Sale, is definitely “one of the most bizarre curiosities ever released in cinemas.” In this strange Western variation on Moby *** Wild Bill Hickok (Charles Bronson) is an “Ahab of the West” haunted by the dreams of a giant white (a…

You don't get to see "The Beast" until the last ten minutes of the movie, but 1956's "The Beast of Hollow Mountain" was adopted by Willis O'Brien from his script for "Valley of Gwangi", original entitled "The Valley of Mist" written back in the late 1930's. The film was an American/Mexican co-production and as he didn't want his name really associated with the film, because they wouldn't let Obie do the stop motion. Obie's name was removed from the original release and a fake Mexican name shown as screen writer. The process used was worse than the foam molds Irwin Allen had O'Brien and Ray Harryhausen use for their 10 minutes prehistoric section of "The Animal World". Still this movie has fond memories to then 9 year old Lloyd. It was also the first stop motion film shot in both Technicolor and wide screen. The film was an immediate hit in 1956, because it combined dinosaurs and cowboys represented by television's "Wild Bill Hickok" Guy Madison without the "Sugar Corn Pops" cereal ads. I am posting this . ...

I struggle when high school aged kids have no idea who Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickok, or Billy The Kid was. What are we teaching in school?
I saw this cartoon ad the other day & contemplated on it for a spell to come up with an answer. I think I accomplished that. Could it be that no one took over where Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Wild Bill Hickok, Cisco Kid, Sunset Carson, Lone Ranger, Hopalong Cassidy, Sargent Preston of the Yukon, Kit Carson & the Three Mesquiteers won the west with six guns, white hats and doing showing that the bad guys never win. That was a Saturday morning tradition in the 50's for American kids that had worthy idols of yesteryear. To quote the line of a Statler Brothers song; "Whatever happened to Randolph Scott ridin' the trail alone?"
Ralph Archer, not really a friend, more like a nemesis. The pencil dot by my nose was done by him. He had his hand on the door of Mr. Sauve’s social studies classroom with a sharpened pencil sticking out and not knowing it I walk into it. Boy that smart! We used to stop off at Ricky Aldrich’s place after school to watch on TV the Little Rascals and Our Gang short films. In earlier times we ran home to watch Pinky Lee, Foggy and Andy Devine, Howdy Doody, and later Captain Cy and the Popeye cartoons. We never missed the Lone Ranger, Wild Bill Hickok, Sky King, Fury, Zorro, Annie Oakley, Lassie, the Cisco Kid, or Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Wesley Hensley lived on Chelan and we walked together to school. His father was a fireman and later became Fire Chief of Wenatchee. Wes Hensley is a lawyer now. Pat Humphries also lived on Chelan and walked to school with us, his family owned the Humphries Apartments on Chelan Street. He was a big and good-natured kid. Phillip Woosters family lived on Mission S ...
Reminder: it's Black History Month (not that Black history occurs in only one month of the year ; its been going on for some time. Being somewhat of a jass buff (yup, that's how it was originally spelled) I've taken delight in pursuing stories and music of some of the early jazz folks like Buddy Bolden , Lieutenant James Reese Europe , Stalebread Lacoumbe and Jelly Roll Morton. Also I've pursured with great interest the Underground Railroad. PLeased to have been some small assistance to the folks who restored the Abolitionist DR Richard Eells; house in Quincy, Illinois and to have written "Burnt Sugar,"a play on the subject ,which was well received in public cast readings there accompanied by laudatory community involvement.( I got a brief sense of what the great Poet & Playwright William Butler Yeats felt when he participated in the Abbey Theatre community productions. The experience of "community," to coin a shilling from Sullivan's psychology). Wild Bill Hickok was an abolitionist, William Seward an .. ...

Happy Birthday GUY MADISON!! (one of my tv heroes growing up) An American film and television actor. In 1944, while visiting Hollywood on leave from the U.S. Coast Guard, Madison's boyish good looks and physique caught the eye of Henry Willson, the head of talent at David O. Selznick's newly formed Vanguard Pictures. Willson was widely known for his stable of good-looking, marginally talented actors with unusual names he bestowed upon them, and he immediately cast the rechristened Madison in a bit part in Selznick's Since You Went Away. Following the film's release in 1944, the studio received thousands of letters from fans wanting to know more about him. Madison was signed by RKO Pictures in 1946 and began appearing in romantic comedies and dramas, but his wooden acting style hurt his chances of advancing in films. In 1951, television came to the rescue of his faltering career when he was cast in The Adventures of Wild Bill Hickok, which ran for seven years. Following his television series, he appeared i ...

Many of you have probably visited the Black Hills and Wild Bill Hickok's grave...this is what it looked like shortly after his death in 1876. On the East side of the country, this is how the City Hall in New York City looked in 1903.
Davis Tutt drew his pistol and swaggered toward Wild Bill Hickok. Hickok panicked and froze on the spot.

By Request.. 12 Facts about the Twelve Doctors 1. The First Doctor, William Hartnell, never encountered The Master on screen, but had grown up with him. In "The Three Doctors" (1973), he only recognizes The Master with great difficulty, but Patrick Troughton (the Second Doctor, who likewise failed to meet The Master on screen during his tenure) recognized him immediately. The same scenario played out in "The Five Doctors" (1983.) 2. The Second Doctor used a wide variety of gadgets to accomplish his tasks, and was a master of disguise, at one point disguising himself as a super-villain to accomplish his goals. This is somewhat ironic - Patrick Troughton was a member of British Intelligence during the Second World War and reported directly to Winston Churchill. Some of his activities are still classified. The "spy Doctor", really -was- a Spy. 3. John Pertwee was the largest man to play the doctor, standing at 6'3 with the body of a Rugby player. (Tom Baker was also 6'3, but not quite as broadly built.)He w ...

By Thurston Moore: My paternal Grandfather, Marcus William Moore, was born in 1866 and died in 1953. He was born and raised in Kentucky, with the exception of two years when the family moved to Abilene, Kansas. Grandpa was about four when they went there, and he told us kids how he and the other boys followed Wild Bill Hickok, the famous sheriff, around, admiring his guns. Marcus married Nora Taylor, and every time I see an old film with Una O’Connor, that wonderful character actress, I am amazed at how she resembled my grandmother. I loved to visit my grandparents when I was a child. I remember Grandpa’s breakfast was “soakums,” as he called it − slices of bread with coffee poured over them. Tracy and Marc called him “chew-tobacco-spit” because he always had an old can on the floor beside his combination straight and rocker chair, which he used to spit his tobacco juice in. I have always loved pumpkin pie, but I couldn’t eat Grandma’s pies. I think she left the sugar out. My maternal G ...
