Wichita State softball coach Kristi Bredbenner probably learned more about her team Saturday than she learned in the previous 48 games. Bredbenner can learn even more in the immediate future when she takes account of how the Shockers respond to a doubleheader sweep by Southern Illinois at Wilkins...
There may be more Wichita State fans than fans, but you have to assume that Indiana State and Southern Illinois are for the Bears.
Much like the rest of college basketball, there is not much parity between the top and the bottom of this league this year. The seed Southern Illinois won 6 conference games and the seed Creighton lost 5 conference games. So to assume that Arch Madness would be a messy affair would be a reasonable assumption.   Creighton and Wichita State are safe for the NCAA Tournament. There was a while earlier in the season where Indiana State could be legitimately described as in the tournament, but the wheels came off of that movement as Indiana State has lost too many games to inferior opponents at the end of the season. The only way another bid comes out of the Valley is if someone not named Creighton or Wichita State cuts down the nets in St. Louis on Sunday.   Arch Madness features four rounds, with two games in the first round to fill out the the simple 3 round, 8 team bracket that starts in the quaterfinals. The championship game will be played on Sunday on CBS.   First Round-Thursday, March 7 Southern Illi ...
From Bob Lutz's blog: WSU and KU –two peas in a pod I have a feeling Kansas basketballfans aren’t going to like what I have to say here today. For all I know, Wichita State basketball fans might not like it, either. But here goes. Jayhawks, you’re the Shockers. You’re 22-4; WSU is 23-5. You suffered a three-game losing streak in the middle of your conference season; so did the Shockers. During that streak, you lost at TCU, a team that had not won a conference game. During WSU’s streak, it lost at Southern Illinois, a team that had won one conference game. Kansas is 14-1 at Allen Fieldhouse. WSU is 14-1 at Koch Arena. KU is 10-3 in its conference, tied for first place. The Shockers are 12-4 in their conference, one game ahead in first place. The Jayhawks average 73.2 points per game; the Shockers average 69.0 ppg. Kansas gives up 60.3 points per game; Wichita State allows 59.2 ppg. KU is a 35.4 percent shooting team from beyond the three-point line. The Shockers shoot 34.2 percent from the arc. T ...
Somehow Southern Illinois is 2-10 in the MVC with their two wins coming against Indiana State and Wichita State. Makes sense.
So I'm sitting in a bar in Vermont and they have Wichita State and Northern Iowa game on. Which begs the question what happened to my alma matter the Southern Illinois Salukis? 2 sweet sixteen a few years ago. They used to be on national Tv. Northern Iowa really? What's going on down in Carbondale? I may need to suit up.
Southern Illinois bloodied the nose of No. 23 Wichita State, but could not deliver the knockout punch as the Shockers escaped with an 82-76 victory in a wild one at sold-out Koch Arena on Wednesday night.
No. 23 Wichita State had every advantage over Southern Illinois. The Shockers played that way in the first half and trailed.
SPORTS: Wichita State, Kansas post victories Early leads No. 23 Shockers over Southern Illinois WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Cleanthony Early had a hard time wrapping his head around what he accomplished Wednesday night. Early scored 39 points — the most for a Wichita State player in over 27 years — and the No. 23 Shockers beat Southern Illinois 82-76 two days after returning to the national rankings. Early's point total was the highest for the Shockers since All-America and future NBA star Xavier Mcdaniel scored 44 in 1985. "No, no, not really," Early said when asked if he realized how close he came to McDaniel. "I respect him, though, respect him for doing that. I know he was the man." Wichita State (15-1, 4-0 Missouri Valley) needed everything Early could do as Southern Illinois rode a hot-shooting first half to keep it close into the final minute. Desmar Jackson scored 28 points and Anthony Beane added 14 for the Salukis (7-8, 0-4). Ehime Orupke had 10 points and nine rebounds for Wichita State, which h ...
There I am on the far right with number 678. That NW wind at 7:30 AM is unforgiving, but no matter. It is a blast being a part of the KMUW Street Team, and even this Southern Illinois University Saluki wears his Street Team shirt with the Wichita State logo on the sleeve with pride. Thanks to Sara Jane and all of my Street Teamates for making this day so memorable.
