AP Coach of Year: Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Gregg Marshall, whose Wichita State team was the first to reach the NCAA tournament undefeated in 33 years, has been selected The Associated Press’ coach of the year. The Shockers entered the tournament at 34-0 and as a No. 1 seed. They became the first team in NCAA men’s history to win its first 35 games. They lost to Kentucky in the third round and fell short of matching Indiana in 1976 as the last unbeaten national champion. Marshall led the Shockers to a No. 2 ranking in the final poll and to the Missouri Valley Conference regular-season and tournament titles. For the fifth straight season, the Shockers won at least 25 games. Marshall received 44 votes Thursday from the same 65-member national media panel that selects the weekly Top 25. Tony Bennett of Virginia had 13 votes, Billy Donovan of Florida drew six and John Beilein of Michigan and Larry Brown of SMU one each. Voting ended on Selection Sunday. AP Coach of the Yea ...

Wichita State Shockers' memorable season ends early in tourney ST. LOUIS (AP) — Wichita State's season came to a conclusion long before even Kentucky coach John Calipari thought it deserved, at the hands of his Wildcats in a thrilling NCAA tournament game. Yet in the immediate aftermath of the loss on Sunday, two things became clear: The Shockers had put together a season to remember and they're poised to do it again. After making the Final Four a year ago, they became the first team to start 35-0. They won their first Missouri Valley tournament title since 1987. They went toe-to-toe with the mighty Wildcats, a team stocked with NBA talent, until the final buzzer finally sounded. Calipari said afterward that it should have been an Elite Eight game, and the winner should have gone to the Final Four. Instead, when the Shockers' Fred VanVleet missed a 3-pointer at the end, it was Kentucky that was advancing and Wichita State that was headed home. "Wichita State never gave up," Calipari said, "and they had ...
Wichita State men's basketball coach Gregg Marshall just said, "This season has literally been a magic carpet ride". Really? Your season was LITERALLY a magic carpet ride?!? I wonder what it was like watching his team play all of their games on a magic carpet? Perhaps he rode a magic carpet to work every day? Either way he lives a magical life. Literally.
I am seeing a lot of WSU fans posting this article about Wichita State deserving a lot of respect despite their loss. Both KU and WSU had a pretty incredible season. KU went for their 10th straight conference title and WSU had a record unbeaten streak. In my opinion WSU achieved a greater feat, but I still a bit confused. Any team that is a one or two or three seed, and for that matter really any team that even makes March Madness deserves respect. But in the same way any one or two seed that loses in the round of 32 is pretty much a woeful disappointment. I personally would prefer having a KU team that consistently makes it to the Final Four as opposed to a KU team that consistently wins conference titles but doesn't know how to show up in March. Last thought here, I sure would like to think that Bill Self loves the state of Kansas enough to give us the solid entertainment of a consistent matchup season after season between KU and WSU. And also, Gregg Marshall probably isn't going to be able to keep the ...
I blame Gregg Marshall the Wichita State coach the fukk you draw a play up for Vanvleet to take the last shot don't get me wrong he good but either Early or my boy Ron Baker should've taken that shot and I know the play was for him cuz Early and Baker basically jogged to their spots so they knew they wasn't getting it

Wichita State disrespected? Only the Shockers coach thinks so BY SAM MELLINGER The Kansas City Star ST. LOUIS — The people around Wichita State basketball like to say they have a perfect record but an imperfect team, and they’re dead right on both counts because we’re 20 minutes into the open locker room and not one guy in here seems angry. Nobody has talked of being overlooked or disrespected, and that’s no small thing, because the postgame pizza looks mid-major. Fortunately, their coach has their back. Gregg Marshall sees disrespect around every corner, under every breadcrumb, and he’s not about to change now. “We like to play that us-against-the-world mentality,” says sophomore guard Ron Baker. “That comes from our coach.” The nobody-respects-us thing is as much a part of the athlete life as Gatorade, of course, but it’s hard to think of many teams who’ve made it such a stubborn part of their identity as the play-angry Shockers, now college basketball’s first-ever 35-0 team afte ...
NCAA tournament at St. Louis: Wichita State, Kentucky, Stanford, Kansas advance ST. LOUIS (AP) — The lasting impression for Cal Poly was Wichita State's diligence on the less glamorous end of the court. Even with just a so-so offense, the unbeaten Shockers cruised to a historic 35th win in a row largely because they never quit on defense. That'll come in handy when the competition steps up Sunday against preseason No. 1 Kentucky. "I know that these guys guard," coach Gregg Marshall said after a 64-37 rout of the lone sub-.500 team in the field Friday night. "That's what we ask them to do for 35 seconds. To hold a team under 40 is a great accomplishment, especially a team that won their league." Cleanthony Early had all but four of his 23 points in a dominating first half against a first-time NCAA entrant. Fred VanVleet had eight assists, Ron Baker had nine rebounds and Kadeem Coleby had four of the team's six blocks in the 10th consecutive double-digit victory for the Shockers (35-0). The losers managed ...

So I just read an ESPN article saying that Gregg Marshall, the Head Coach of Wichita State, pretty much saying it wasn't fair to be in the same section of the bracket as Kentucky and Louisville. My argument is now justified, thank you, Gregg Marshall.

Clark Kellogg shares his thoughts on teams to watch this year: "Wichita State shocked many with a Final Four appearance last year. I won’t be shocked if the Shockers do it again. Gregg Marshall's team is capable. Also, keep an eye on BYU, Dayton, Florida State, Iowa State and UMASS."
Yesterday, I posted that Steve Patterson, currently at Arizona State, was going to be the next athletic director at Texas. Personally, I think the Longhorns made an awesome hire! And, here is my bold prediction. Within no more than five years, Texas is going to be the premier school to be doing great in BOTH football and basketball at the same time, whether or not they have the most consistent program in either. I am predicting Patterson to make two "home run-caliber" Head Coaching hires for each. While I am not predicting Nick Saban to go to Texas, I think the Longhorns' next football coach will be great with both Xs & Os and recruiting. That and being at a school that is among the easier sells for talent is one great combination. As for hoops, I could be wrong, but I am predicting either Buzz Williams of Marquette or Gregg Marshall, currently at Wichita State, to be the next head basketball man in Austin. Once again, I am not saying that either the basketball or the football team will be the nation's be ...
Wichita State's Gregg Marshall is the highest paid coach in the Missouri Valley Conference
Forbes moves WICHITA, Kan. — Former SWCC coach and Tennessee assistant Steve Forbes told CBSSports.com on Monday that he has reached an agreement to join Gregg Marshall's staff at Wichita State. This development means Forbes is the first person from Bruce Pearl's staff at Tennessee to re-enter the NCAA. "I was so excited and honored when coach Marshall asked me to join his staff," Forbes told CBSSports.com. "Coach Marshall is one of the top coaches in college basketball -- proving that with a historical run to the Final Four this past year. I have so much respect for him." Forbes said he has lifelong friendships with Shockers associate Head Coach Chris Jans and assistant coach Greg Heiar. Forbes is one of three former Tennessee assistants who was, along with Pearl, fired in March 2011 during an NCAA investigation rooted in a now infamous cookout Pearl held at his home in violation of NCAA bylaws. Before Tennessee, Forbes was an assistant at Illinois State, Louisiana Tech and Texas A&M. He has recently b ...

It's funny, how Wichita State basketball has captured an OU guy. Probably because I have an undying appreciation for any team that will defend like crazy and hit the backboards - and an undying need to punch anyone in the throat who thinks the beauty of basketball is found in dunks and three-point shots. Add to that today, when I was lunching in Heroes watching Gregg Marshall invest a bunch of time taking photos and talking basketball with some truly star-struck Shocker diehards. Nothing quick, nothing patronizing, just a coach who looked for all the world sincerely interested in what his fans wanted to know. Clearly, Marshall understands who his program belongs to - those folks who wanted a picture and a few words about the basketball team. Some would say he knows how to market his program. Bob Layton calls that community engagement. I call it a breath of fresh air, watching the city's rock star acting like an ordinary guy surrounded by ordinary guys. Already admire what Marshall's done at WSU. Today add ...
Coach Gregg Marshall has No. 20 Wichita State flying high WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — There are some coaches in college basketball who always seem composed. They may be churning below the surface, but outwardly they’re calm, keeping everything bottled up until a player makes an errant pass or an official’s call goes the other way. Gregg Marshall is not one of those coaches. The sixth-year coach of Wichita State is the fly that fell in the can of Red Bull, perpetual motion personified. He stalks the sidelines in his jet-black suit for 40 minutes every night, his screaming voice augmented by his flailing arms and stomping feet. He’d be wasting his time if he wasn’t talking to four people at once — calling for a sub, conferring with an assistant, ripping a referee, all while ordering up the next play. “We don’t always do things perfect, and when we don’t, he can get loud,” admitted Carl Hall, a senior forward. “But he just wants to win. That’s him. He’s all about winning.” He’s been do ...
