BIG NAMES SEES CITY BECOME FAVOURITES Melbourne City have bolted into favouritism with online bookmaker sportsbet.com.au to be the next A-League champion on the back of news that Chelsea’s all-time leading goalscorer, Frank Lampard, is set to join David Villa and Damien Duff Down Under. Originally priced at $6.00, City are now the outright favourites at $4.50, ahead of last year’s winners Brisbane Roar ($5.00), cross town rivals Melbourne Victory ($6.00) and the Western Sydney Wanderers ($7.00). Punters seem to agree that City are the team to beat, with more money for them than any other team. Surprisingly, Sydney FC are the next best backed at $10. “The big names keep coming for City and each time their price firms. They look to be a completely different team to last year, and at the moment they are the only ones punters want to be on,” said sportsbet.com.au’s Shaun Anderson. Football Federation Australia are planning to introduce members only restrictions for all active support areas across the entire A-League for the 2014/15 season. According to sources close to the FFA and several A-League clubs, the FFA has been lobbied by the leadership of both Melbourne Victory & the Western Sydney Wanderers, to restrict every club in the A-League to membership only ticketing for all active support areas. The measure would mean that no match day tickets would be available to anyone for active support areas in any match this season. "This season we will continue to show the nation and the world that the Hyundai A-League has the best atmosphere in Australian sport as we aim to empower more fans to get involved with the competition." FFA Marketing for Season 2013/14. Football Federation Australia responded positively to the alleged lobbying from the two flagship clubs, and are set to slam through these restrictions in time for the start of the A-League in 120 days. Western Sydney Wanderers enjoyed the finest hour in its two-year history when it beat Sanfrecce Hiroshima of Japan 2-0 to reach the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League.
Second half about to get underway in the A-League Grand Final at Suncorp Stadium, and it's 0-0 between the Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers. In a typically cagey first half, both teams could not really create too many opportunities in a tight contest. Thomas Broich flashed wide, while Ivan Franjic hit the crossbar on a cross that turned into a shot, while Youssouf Hersi and Jerome Polenz has been lively attack the Roar's left side defence. Definitely shaping into a match where one piece of brilliance or error that could be the difference in lifting the trophy.
Is Suncorp Stadium unsanitary? Western Sydney Wanderers appear to have caught yellow card fever.
Kick off just over 10 minutes away here at Suncorp Stadium for the 2014 A-League Grand Final between Brisbane Roar and Western Sydney Wanderers. (Due to the large crowd and limited wifi, there will be limited updates)
Getting ready to go to Suncorp Stadium for "Orange Sunday 3". Brisbane Roar vs Western Sydney Wanderers with Gabby Smulders, Tracey Brown and Scott Husband. Can't wait for the game to start in about 3 hours. It will be electrifying. Anyone who can't be there and supports the Brisbane Roar please watch at home, pub or online as it will be viewed by around 250 million others around the globe. Wow no pressure for the roar. Let's go Brisbane Roar, 3 hours till kick off.
Message to Tony Popovic: Shortly after 4pm today the Western Sydney Wanderers will charge on to Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane and the hopes of millions of Sydneysiders will run with them. If your team wins, Sydney will celebrate. That is the magic of football, the magic of sport. The celebration of sport binds us together. Good Luck. L
Today's ride is done. The weather was OK, but the howling westerly made life difficult. The ride went east on the south side of the river, then crossed over via the Gateway Bridge. Then we were into the wind back through the city (including across the forecourt of Suncorp Stadium where the Roar will thrash Western Sydney Wanderers later today) as far as the Eleanor Schonell Bridge. One *** of a work to windward. After that it was downwind all the way back to the finish, although the climb up Highgate Hill slowed a few people without big spinnakers. With the wind behind me I did a big sprint for the finish line, and hit it far too fast for all the people milling around and had to stand on the anchors to avoid hitting anyone. After that I went home for a big breakfast!

From The Age Brisbane took no offence when the Western Sydney Wanderers arrived five minutes late on Saturday for their A-League grand final eve media conference. But they were determined to have the last word on the season decider as history beckoned after appearing to doubt the impact of the Wanderers' travelling fan group the "Red and Black Bloc" at a huge Suncorp Stadium. Roar coach Mike Mulvey and an equally tense skipper Matt Smith appeared in no mood to waste time on grand final eve after waiting in vain for their rivals to join them on Saturday. "Let's get it started," Mulvey said. Advertisement Asked if he was annoyed that the Wanderers were not on time, Mulvey said: "No, I just would hate to keep you guys waiting. "You've got deadlines so I just thought it was best we started." They might be on the verge of becoming the A-League's first three-time champions but Brisbane appeared intent on giving little else away before Wanderers coach Tony Popovic and captain Nikolai Topor-Stanley finally arrive ...

Journeyman Hersi smiling Down Under (FIFA.com) Tuesday 25 February 2014 Share The list reads like a who’s who of modern Dutch football: Rafael van der Vaart, Maarten Stekelenburg, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Arjen Robben and John Heitinga. The players were all members of the Netherlands’ FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign in Argentina, where the coveted No10 jersey was worn by Youssouf Hersi. The Ethiopian-born, Dutch-raised wide midfielder played all five matches at Argentina 2001 but, unlike many of his former Jong Oranje team-mates, Hersi’s domestic career has been a mixed experience involving nine different clubs. However, the 31-year-old seems to have found a new lease of life at in-fashion A-League club Western Sydney Wanderers. Long and winding road Born in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia, Hersi’s family departed Africa when he was five years old. Not for the last time, Hersi’s life experience was about to turn full circle. He lived and grew up in a rural part of the Netherlands, but a chance meeting with a local ...
Western Sydney Wanderers will make their debut in the AFC Champions League against Ulsan Hyundai on Wednesday night at Parramatta Stadium (kick off 7:30pm AEDT).
Wanderers, Victory and Sydney grab wins (PA) Saturday 22 February 2014 Western Sydney Wanderers turned up the pressure on A-League leaders Brisbane Roar with a 2-0 win at Perth Glory. Goals in either half from Mateo Poljak and Tomi Juric secured Wanderers the win as they moved to within four points of Brisbane, who face in-form Melbourne Heart on Sunday looking to bounce back from last week's home loss to Newcastle Jets. Staying four points behind the Wanderers in third place are Melbourne Victory after they edged a seven-goal thriller against Adelaide United 4-3. Adelaide forward Sergio Cirio struck all three of his side's goals, but he still ended on the losing side as Victory took the spoils with strikes from Guilherme Finkler, Archie Thompson and Kosta Barbarouses. Also on Saturday, Alessandro Del Piero was on the scoresheet as Sydney FC won 2-0 at Newcastle, the former Italy star netting a 73rd-minute penalty after Sasa Ognenovski had broken the deadlock on the hour.

Western Sydney Wanderers have returned to second place with a comfortable 3-1 win over Perth Glory at Pirtek Stadium. Leading 2-0 at the break, Shane Smeltz profited from a lack of concentration in the Wanderers' defence to close the gap to 2-1 with still over 30 minutes to play, before a penalty to Mark Bridge would seal the deal for the Wanderers. A morale boosting win after a tough couple of outings for the defending premiers, and with a busy schedule coming up including Asian Champions League group fixtures, wins like this will become a premium. For the Glory, their record against top six teams at the moment is a little suspect for Kenny Lowe's liking, and something will need to fix if they wish to contend in the race to the finals series. At Adelaide Oval, England are closing in on Australia's target of 218 in the fifth and final ODI, and are 5/158, requiring a further 60 off 60 balls. Ravi Bopara and Jos Buttler would be favoured to get England home from this spot, requiring a run a ball, but an Aus ...

BERBATOV TO A-LEAGUE? It's one of the more bizarre transfer rumours out there at the moment - but could Dimitar Berbatov be on the next superstar to grace the A-League? Out of favour at relegation struggler Fulham and seemingly unlikely to secure a move to EPL leaders Arsenal, there are some admittedly highly questionable rumours that the mercurial Bulgarian could head Down Under next season. Despite consistent speculation linking him with the Gunners, Arsene Wenger said he has 'not considered' a move for the former Manchester United and Tottenham forward, and an unsubstantiated story on sportsdirectnews.com suggests the A-League could be on his radar. The A-League's marquee system has been the subject of some discussion in recent weeks, with Shinji Ono confirming his departure from Western Sydney Wanderers and doubts over Alessandro Del Piero's future with Sydney FC. But given the Italian legend's effect on Sydney FC, the Sky Blues' strategy of signing blue-chip marquee players could make Sydney a possib ...
Western Sydney Wanderers marquee man Shinji Ono believes he will play in the A-League again in the future despite heading back to Japan at the end of the season.
Lots happening with Brett Emerton's retirement, Shinji Ono going home to wife & child & Second Division in J-League, Orlando Engelaar finally set to play for Melbourne Heart, Nathan Burns loan deal over, Brisbane Roar on again-off again on whether Broich will play (& without him, they're half the team *some* say), more rotation at Western Sydney Wanderers & just who will get 'frustrated' with this week? Besides a good cold beer in this heat, what are you most looking forward to this coming weekend?

Shinji Ono scores 2 great goals on New Year's day to lead the Western Sydney Wanderers to a 2-1 win against the Melbourne Victory.
To quote the great Bill Lawry - "it's all happening!", with THREE bits of football breaking news: - Western Sydney Wanderers have announced that Shinji Ono is to leave at the end of the season (after ACL commitments) to join J2 club Consodale Sapporo. - Reports from Japan that Mitch Nichols move to join Cerezo Osaka is a done deal. Victory looking to bring in a Japanese playmaker as a replacement, whose identity is yet to be confirmed. - Sydney FC has officially announced through chairman Scott Barlow that former Socceroo Brett Emerton is retiring with immediate effect. Throw in Brisbane Roar's Ballon D'Or winner Nadine Angerer returning to Brisbane and Melbourne Victory officially announcing they will play their ACL qualifying match at Simonds Stadium (to be known as Kardinia Park for sponsorship reasons) in Geelong, and it has been a pretty busy morning.
Four men have been charged over a violent brawl last month between fans of A-League football clubs the Melbourne Victory and Western Sydney Wanderers.
The Sydney Morning Herald 'Double standards at play over football violence' Courtesy of Matt Bungard: In the week that has passed since Western Sydney Wanderers fans clashed with their Melbourne Victory counterparts outside AAMI Park, we've seen a great deal of condemnation for football in Australia, and very little from anyone to refute some of the claims that have been made. There has recently been a spate of bashings on Sydney's streets as young men struggle to handle their alcohol, and everyone is rightly horrified by young men who have ruined lives with their actions. Then, two seconds later, everyone turns around and celebrates former prime minister, Bob Hawke, slamming down a beer at the cricket. This is where the hypocrisy is most astounding. The Australian sporting public condemns the Melbourne Heart fan who king hit a Western Sydney Wanderers supporter at a game last year, but hails NSW captain Paul Gallen a hero for doing the same in front of 80,000 people in a State of Origin game. Anti-footba ...

Squadron Statement re: vs Western Sydney Wanderers 14/12/13 The following statement is in regards to the events that transpired on Saturday evening in the closing minutes of Newcastle United Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers at Hunter Stadium. The Squadron Football Supporters Club (Inc) Committee is under no illusions that the events that occurred on Saturday night could have been avoided had 3 Wanderers fans (who were obviously identified by the jerseys they were wearing) not been allowed to enter Bay 2 in the 90th minute of the match. The Squadron FSC had made it clearly known to the stakeholders involved in the weeks prior to the match that there should be a strong security/police presence at the entrances of and in close proximity to Bays 1 & 2. This advice was based on previous incidents where away fans have entered the bay with the intent to incite violence and harass the home fans in similar circumstances. It was extremely disappointing for us to see that this advice was not heeded. On top of this, e ...

Full time at Allianz Stadium, and it is official - with the Western Sydney Wanderers comfortably taking the 4th Sydney Derby with a 2-0 win over Sydney FC. Despite a better second half effort from the hosts, the Wanderers were just too good in this contest, and will deservedly take bragging rights in the town, and move into second place on the ladder as Iacopa La Rocca and Shinji Ono scored for the defending premiers. Wanderers remain undefeated after three matches, and they so far look like where they left off in season eight, while sadly the same can be said for the Sky Blues, who have now lost two on the bounce. A short break now, but be back in just under half an hour as Barclays Premier League action kicks off, with Crystal Palace hosting London rivals Arsenal in the early match. 4 matches to follow at 3pm local tome, including Aston Villa versus Everton, as well as the El Clasico later on in the night.
Western Sydney Wanderers have just beaten Sydney FC 2-0 in front of 40,388 fans at Allianz Stadium tonight. Bet the Roosters would love to get a home crowd like that.
Full Time at Allianz Stadium and Western Sydney Wanderers have defeated Sydney FC 2-0.
Just under 20 minutes to play plus stoppages in the Sydney Derby, and Western Sydney Wanderers still hold a 2-0 lead over Sydney FC in front of 40,388 at Allianz Stadium. The hosts have even slightly better in the second half, though have failed to really threaten as the visitors hold a comfortable two-goal buffer. The fixture has become a little niggly, with 31 fouls and 8 yellow cards so far, it is living up to an intensity that is synonymous of a local derby.
