Wales’ mental hurdle still looms large Wales remain more hopeful than convinced that they will break through the mental barrier in Saturday's showdown with the Springboks, reports JON CARDINELLI in Cardiff. 'Always great to see you, Rob, but where's Warren?' This was one of the first questions put to Wales assistant coach Rob Howley at Thursday's press conference held at the Vale Resort outside Cardiff. Head coach Warren Gatland was initially scheduled to sit with the media on Tuesday, but a meeting with the IRB resulted in that conference being pushed to Thursday. And then on Thursday, to the annoyance of the local media, Gatland didn't pitch. The reasons given for his absence were vague. 'He's unavailable,' said the Wales media manager. 'Uh, I think at this moment in time, he is meeting some of our players,' offered Howley nervously. 'He's unavailable, and that's all.' Gatland was a no-show at Thursday's press conference, but then you wonder what he could have said. Indeed, while he has been successfu ...
Selling radios at the cricket was fun actually. Warren Gatland and Rob Howley wouldn't buy any from me though!
Lancaster 3/1 to lead Lions next. Stuart Lancaster is the early favourite at 3/1 with Ladbrokes to be in charge of the Lions for their next tour, in New Zealand, in 2017. The British and Irish Lions sealed a memorable series victory over Australia with a 41-16 triumph against the Wallabies in Sydney and in four years time they will bid for another success against southern hemisphere opposition, in the shape of the All Blacks. The England coach is 3/1 to lead the tourists in that one while Warren Gatland is a 6/1 chance at Ladbrokes to still hold the post and Rob Howley is 4/1. However, a win for the Lions in 2017 is considered unlikely, Ladbrokes pricing the hosts as 2/7 favourites and making the Lions 5/2 outsiders. Elsewhere, Ladbrokes post 1/5 against the Lions being named ‘team of the year’ at the Sports Personality of the Year Awards and they also go 6/1 about Alun Wyn-Jones captaining the side in New Zealand. Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes told Betrescue: “When it mattered most the Lions delivere ...
Great second half, awful and frustrating first half. Got no faith in Rob Howley - I'm sorry, he's a nice man I'm sure but he has as much authority as a paper tissue - he's only about 4ft 6 and weighs four stone!! Why on earth would North and Cuthbert 6ft 9 giants be scared and in awe of that!! Howley's as big as a gnat and sounds like one of the grannies on the Shreddies adverts. Honestly, he's no leader!!! Gut wrenching too, to see Warren Gatland sitting in the audience as a Lions boss - I'm sure the WRU are still paying him! He could have led us through the Six Nations and then worried about the Lions. He would have seen all the players thru the Six Nations anyway.
Rob Howley... what are you doing to the team? Bring back Warren Gatland!
Jason Mohammed just asked " what does Rob Howley have to say to his Wales team at half time" I'm thinking...don't worry lads Warren Gatland will be back next year!
Nice to see Warren Gatland in the crowd, wish he was sat where Howley is... Sorry Rob
Rob Howley says Wales' coaching set-up was compromised when he and Warren Gatland shared the job in the autumn. Wales' interim coach is at the helm for the Six Nations, while Gatland is on British and Irish Lions duty ahead of the summer of 2013 tour to Australia. Howley coached Wales for the two opening defeats by Argentina and Samoa, while Gatland was in charge as they lost to New Zealand and Australia.
