Dislocated shoulder for Leigh Halfpenny. 'Looks like season over' according to Warren Gatland in press conference.
Loss of Leigh Halfpenny adds to frustration of Warren Gatland
Full back Leigh Halfpenny is out for the season with a dislocated shoulder, while scrum half Rhys Webb is an injury doubt for the clash with Scotland. Halfpenny injured his right shoulder tackling Luther Burrell, while Webb limped off with a foot injury. Wales were beaten 29-18 by England, who lifted the Triple Crown for the first time since 2003, at Twickenham. "Rhys is [wearing] a [medical] boot and Leigh has done an arm or a shoulder," said Wales coach Warren Gatland. Wales' hopes of an unprecedented third Six Nations title ended in London.
Warren Gatland left disappointed by Leigh Halfpenny and Ian Evans

Delighted to see The Lions, Leigh Halfpenny and particularly Warren Gatland rewarded in BBC Sports Personality.especially after all the negative press that Gatland had to endure after dropping BOD!
Why is so many on here slagging Sports Personality of the Year? Thought it was a great night and a very worthy winner in Andy Murray! But just realised not a good night for the English amongst the winners besides Andy, Leigh Halfpenny, A J McCoy, Alex Ferguson, Warren Gatland & The British Lions! Oh sorry was there a couple of Englishmen in the Lions after a few of the Welsh boys got injured? :-)
The British & Irish Lions entered the BBC SPOTY awards in fine style tonight and rounded off 2013 with the 'Team of the Year' award, while Warren Gatland claimed the 'Coach of the Year' award and Leigh Halfpenny finished just behind Andy Murray in the race for the Sports Personality of the year award. A brilliant achievement. Thanks to all Lions fans for your support.
Leigh halfpenny as runner up, Warren Gatland as coach of the year, and the British Lions (Virtually all Welsh) won team of the year. What a great night for Wales
Congratulations Leigh Halfpenny on becoming runner up to Andy Murray for SPOTY. Thoroughly deserved, a monster out achievement. Huge Congratulations to Warren Gatland and his Lions for their achievements. Another great year.
Well done to Leigh Halfpenny,Warren Gatland,The British Lions,Sir Alex & Andy Murray - they have the X factor!!
Leigh Halfpenny, runner-up in BBC Sports Personality; British & Irish Lions, best team; Warren Gatland, best coach. Rugby is the best sport. Fact.
Well done Leigh Halfpenny and Warren Gatland. So have you you heard the latest... A Scot, a Welshman and an Irishman went to a Sports Personality award.
Tries by centres Owen Williams and Ashley Beck gave Wales an uninspiring win over gutsy, hard-grafting Tonga at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium. All the scores came in the first 34 minutes as Williams broke clear and Beck defied the touchline, while Leigh Halfpenny kicked seven points. London Wasps wing Will Helu struck back with a memorable Tongan try, converted by Latiume Fosita. But the second period was defence-dominated, dour and scoreless. Wales boss Warren Gatland, marking his 100th Test as a coach, will not baulk at extending their record against Tonga to seven wins, after a 2012 autumn defeat by Samoa and 2010 draw with Fiji.
South Africa Injury to insult for Wales Sun, 10 Nov 2013 11:41 It was the worst we've been aerially for some time Wales’ woes were compounded in the wake of their loss to the Springboks in Cardiff on Saturday after confirmation that centre Jonathan Davies has been ruled out for the rest of the year. Wales suffered a 15-24 loss to the Springboks despite five penalties from the boot of the metronomic Leigh Halfpenny. Tries from captain Jean de Villiers, hooker Bismarck du Plessis and a second half effort from scrumhalf Fourie du Preez earned the win for Heyneke Meyer's side. Wales were not helped by a number of significant injuries. Davies, Liam Williams and Adam Jones were all forced off during a hugely physical first 40 minutes. Scott Andrews, who himself was a replacement, also went off injured as the intensity of the game led to its fair share of casualties. Wales coach Warren Gatland confirmed that Davies will miss the Tests against Argentina, Tonga and Australia due to a pectoral injury and possibly ...
Boks continue dominance over Wales By SAPA Cardiff – South Africa maintained their winning dominance over Wales on Saturday with a brutal 24-15 victory based on a suffocating blanket defence and an unerring knack of doing the basics well. The Springboks scored three tries through captain Jean de Villiers, Bismarck du Plessis and Fourie du Preez, fly-half Morne Steyn bagging two conversions and a penalty, Pat Lambie also hitting a conversion. Wales had just five Leigh Halfpenny penalties to their credit, meaning that under coach Warren Gatland, they have now lost 21 of their 22 Test matches against southern hemisphere giants New Zealand, South Africa and Australia, the exception a 21-18 win over Australia in 2008. Their sole victory over South Africa, in 27 internationals stretching back 107 years, came back in 1999. The match at the Millennium Stadium was one of attrition, notably in the first-half when a series of high-impact collisions saw Wales forced into three replacements and South Africa one. But ...
Wales name team to face Boks 2013-11-05 Cardiff - Ospreys wing Eli Walker is set to make his Wales debut against the Springboks after being named in coach Warren Gatland's starting side to face the Springboks at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday. The 21-year-old has been given his chance after injury ruled out wing Alex Cuthbert from the first of Wales's four November internationals. Meanwhile Rhys Priestland returns at fly-half after missing all of Wales's Six Nations title-winning campaign last season with an Achilles injury. British and Irish Lions skipper Sam Warburton again captains the side from the back-row where Dan Lydiate, one of the stars of the combined side's 2-1 series win in Australia this year, makes his first Wales appearance since 2012 following an ankle injury. Walker has long been regarded as one of the best finishers in the Celtic League but a back injury ruled him out of both the Six Nations and Wales's two-Test pre-season tour of Japan. "Eli has impressed for his region and while w ...
Gatland: Lions can roar again Warren Gatland: Turns attention backto coaching Wales Warren Gatland believes the British and Irish Lions will have what it takesto end a 42-year wait for a Test seriesvictory over New Zealand. This year's Lions squad are still celebrating a 2-1 success over Australia - their first Test series win since 1997 - achieved with a number of exciting young players playing crucial roles. Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Alex Corbisiero, Sam Warburton, Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau all shone and Gatland expects them to be the world-class talent at the heart of the 2017 touring squad. Asked if he thought the Lions could win in New Zealand, current Lions boss Gatland said: "Yes, I think if we get things right in terms of the preparation and stuff. "If you look at how young this squad is, a lot of them could be around in four years' time. "If they are playing well enough and you have got four more years' experience on some young heads, some young shoulders and they are in their late 20s, t ...
SPOTY 2013: coach: Warren Gatland; SPOTY: Leigh Halfpenny, but most of all foreign player of the year: Brian O'Driscoll. What a man! The very personification of sport and magnanimity.
Gatland decisions vindicated By Reuters SYDNEY - A record third Test win provided emphatic vindication for British and Irish Lions' coach Warren Gatland's decision to rely on muscle to overcome Australia after enduring 72 hours of vilification for his team selections. The four tries that helped the Lions to a 41-16 win and a first test series triumph since 1997 put a considerable gloss on the result but there can have been few test victories more solidly built on the engine room of the pack. A Wallabies' scrum that had held their own in the tight first two tests were pulverised in the set-piece at the Olympic Stadium, conceding penalty after penalty as they crumbled before the red onslaught. In the breakdown and around the fringes, openside Sean O'Brien and number eight Toby Faletau - both brought into the beefed up pack for the decider - tackled like demons and crashed repeatedly into the home defence with ball in hand. Gatland had been subjected to a furious backlash for picking a starting team with 10 ...
Relive all the action from the final Test in Sydney as Warren Gatland's men thrash the Wallabies!
Record breaking Leigh Halfpenny scored 21 points as the Lions ran in four tries to destroy the Wallabies in Sydney for an historic 2-1 series triumph that ended a 16 year wait for success and proved that Warren Gatland is a genius.
so the lions won eh?... Warren Gatland sure did proved his critics wrong! Leigh Halfpenny = player of the tour! ;)
What a fantastic come back by the Lions. Thought they had thrown it away early in the second half, but the backs came though with power. Leigh Halfpenny an absolute hero, as is the understated Alun Wyn Jones and Adam Jones. Must also say that I respect Aussie captain James Horwill for his performances and leadership. Don't believe he meant to stamp on Alun Wyn in the first test and he's come through all the flak with amazing dignity. Also well done to Warren Gatland and his team, who have been under the cosh following their team selection. Result proves that he was right. Great series.
Please try to answer the following multiple choice question correctly. You may select more than one answer:- After their stunning 41-16 victory over Australia today (and completing a 2-1 series win in the process), what will the 2013 British and Irish Lions now be known as? A: Heroes B: Legends C: Icons D: ALL OF THE ABOVE What a second half exhibition of rugby that was!! Warren Gatland, my sincere apologies for doubting your decision to drop Brian O'Driscoll. As for the try scorers, Alex Corbisiero, Jonathan Sexton, George North, Jamie Roberts: I love you all. Finally, Leigh Halfpenny: You are a goalkicking points machine. Your man-of-the series award is well deserved. Thank you guys for an unforgettable series. Now all i can say is: Roll on the Ashes!!!
Lions chief Warren Gatland consoles Leigh Halfpenny after shot for glory falls short
Lions: L Halfpenny; A Cuthbert, B O'Driscoll, J Davies, G North; J Sexton, M Phillips; A Corbisiero, T Youngs, A Jones; AW Jones, P O'Connell; T Croft, S Warburton (c), J Heaslip. Reps: R Hibbard, M Vunipola, D Cole, G Parling, D Lydiate, B Youngs, O Farrell, S Maitland. Eight Welsh players will be in the Lions first Test starting line-up to face Australia on Saturday, after Warren Gatland revealed his picks earlier today. Sam Waburton will captain the side in the No.7 jersey and he is joined by full-back Leigh Halfpenny, wings Alex Cuthbert and George North, centre Jonathan Davies, scrum-half Mike Phillips, second row Alun Wyn Jones and prop Adam Jones. The only surprise was the inclusion of Englishman Alex Corbisiero at loosehead, Mako Vunipola having been expected to get the nod butu having to make do with a place on the bench. That's the situation too for hooker Richard Hibbard, who has lost out to in-form Tom Youngs for the No.2 jersey. Hibbard and blindside Dan Lydiate are the Welshmen among the rep ...
Sunday morning sports wrap: *AFL Essendon produced a controlled performance to post a comfortable 43-point defeat of Gold Coast at Docklands. The Bombers' 17.13 (115) to 11.6 (72) victory moves them to a 9-3 record and they consolidate their position in the top eight. In Saturday's other matches, Richmond showed it looks good to break its AFL finals drought with a 38-point 16.14 (110) to 10.12 (72) win over Adelaide, while Fremantle was mostly comfortable in a scrappy 40-point 12.14 (86) to 6.10 (46) win over Brisbane. *NRL Canberra kept its place inside the top eight with a win over Penrith while Cronulla romped home against the Eels. The Raiders have cruised past Penrith to win 24-12 in their clash on Saturday to record their 10th straight victory at Canberra Stadium. A Jeff Robson double helped the Sharks to an excellent 32-14 win over Parramatta at Shark Stadium. *British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland said Leigh Halfpenny could kick the team to victory against Australia after he totted up ...
SPORT: The final whistle goes in Perth, and it's another impressive win for the Lions. They've beaten the Western Force by 69 points to 17. Gorseinon's Leigh Halfpenny proved why he is the man to beat for the fullback spot come the 1st test - he kicked ALL 11 attempts at goal! Warren Gatland's side will be back in action on Saturday, when they take on the Queensland Reds.
New orders from Warren Gatland: Leigh Halfpenny to take the next conversion from the hospitality box. And the one after that, from the changing room.
Lions XV British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland will have been a busy man as the RBS Six Nations reached the midway point. While one eye will have undoubtedly been on the on-going action in the Super Rugby, Gatland's priority will have been on the performances of the home unions. And as one or two individuals play themselves out of contention for the tour to Australia, a number continue to stake strong claims. And once again, skysports.com's Tony Curtis puts himself into Gatland's shoes and names his Lions XV. Remember the selections are based purely on this weekend's games... 15 Leigh Halfpenny (Wales) It is going to take something pretty special to... ~SportsMan
If you were Warren Gatland who would you pick for the Lions 15? Rob Kearney or Leigh Halfpenny?
Wales head coach Warren Gatland and captain Sam Warburton have welcomed the challenge of facing top tier nations Australia and England in Pool A of the next Rugby World Cup in 2015.
Fingers crossed Wales full back Leigh Halfpenny is ok. He took a big hit when trying to make a tackle in the final minute against Australia which resulted in a long delay whilst he was put on a stretcher. In his interview after, Warren Gatland said "Halfpenny has gone straight to hospital, we don't know the situation yet"
