Kiwi duo clash as O'Driscoll takes centre stage 07 February 2014, 06:51 Ireland coach Joe Schmidt admits it is impossible for him to spring any surprises on Wales counterpart Warren Gatland ahead of Saturday's Six Nations showdown at Dublin's Lansdowne Road. The two New Zealand-born coaches have opposed one another over the course of their rugby careers, while Gatland also has vast experience of the Irish game from his time in charge of the country and his spell as boss of the British and Irish Lions. While there may be a lukewarm welcome for Gatland from the Irish fans, following his controversial decision to drop national hero Brian O'Driscoll from the Lions' third and final test in Australia last year, Schmidt insists he has no special plans for the Welsh visitors. "I've no doubt Warren knows a fair bit about what I do and I know a fair bit about what he does as well," said Schmidt, ahead of a second-round clash that could prove decisive in the destination of the Six Nations title. "Obviously, he's coa ...
Lock Ian Evans will miss Wales' Six Nations defence after being banned for 12 weeks for stamping. Evans, 29, was dismissed by referee Romain Poite during Ospreys' 36-3 Heineken Cup defeat by Leinster after stamping on opponent Mike McCarthy. The British and Irish Lions player pleaded guilty before a disciplinary hearing in Dublin on Thursday. Entry-level suspensions for stamping range from two to nine-plus weeks, with 52 weeks the maximum. It is another blow for Wales coach Warren Gatland, who is already without injured forward Ryan Jones and may not have captain Sam Warburton fit for their opening match against Italy on 1 February.
Sports Personality: Lions and Warren Gatland win BBC awards The British and Irish Lions were named team of the year and Warren Gatland won the top coach honour at the 2013 BBC Sports Personality awards. Gatland led the Lions to a first Test series win in Australia for 16 years. The 50-year-old Kiwi said: "This is a reflection of the people that were involved in two years of meticulous planning and preparation." British & Irish Lions win Team of the Year Welsh Lion Leigh Halfpenny was second behind Scotland's Andy Murray in the main Sports Personality award. With the series in Australia poised at 1-1, the Lions crushed the Wallabies in the final match as they racked up 41 points in Sydney to secure victory in style. Gatland thanked his support staff and added: "I keep reminding myself that great players make great coaches. Thank you very much." Victory came after Gatland controversially dropped Ireland centre Brian O'Driscoll for the deciding Test. The New Zealander admitted at the time that he wondered wh ...

The British & Irish Lions entered the BBC SPOTY awards in fine style tonight and rounded off 2013 with the 'Team of the Year' award, while Warren Gatland claimed the 'Coach of the Year' award and Leigh Halfpenny finished just behind Andy Murray in the race for the Sports Personality of the year award. A brilliant achievement. Thanks to all Lions fans for your support.

Wales Head Coach Warren Gatland ready to lead the British and Irish Lions on tour in Zew Zealand homeland
JUDGEMENT DAY HAS ARRIVED. The Lions series win over the Wallabies down under brought plenty controversy with questions over initial selection with some of the games top performers missing out, Chris Robshaw the England captain being one to name a few. Was it really the strongest team that could have been fielded or could Warren Gatland not quite see past his beloved Welsh Dragons. This weekend sees the Welsh take on the Wallabies on home turf looking to get one over the ‘Ozzies’ for the first time in 5 years. Following the 20-13 defeat against England the Wallabies have found their feet again and after impressive victories over both Ireland and Scotland are looking strong coming into the encounter. The big argument that is sure to be brought up in many a beer fueled debate this weekend is that if Wales fall to the Australians this Saturday was the selection of so many Welshman the best starting XV down under? Although the British & Irish Lions came away with a victory a lot of the feedback that follo ...
What we’ve learned Five lessons from the Test in Cardiff between Wales and the Springboks, according to SIMON BORCHARDT. Wales are just not good enough to challenge the world's top two teams There was a lot of talk from the Welsh in the build-up to the Cardiff Test. They spoke about the fact that nine Welshman had been in the British & Irish Lions team that thrashed the Wallabies in the third Test of their series earlier this year. They said they felt they were good enough to beat the Boks for just the second time in their history and for the first time in seven matches under coach Warren Gatland. Captain Sam Warburton even said that his side would not celebrate if they beat the Boks because they expected to win. Warburton did not celebrate at the final whistle on Saturday, because yet again the Dragons failed to breath fire against a southern hemisphere side (they have lost 22 of their last 23 matches against the 'big three'). The Six Nations champions played at home, in front of a 64,000 crowd, and we ...
Key Clash Preview and Prediction: Wales v South Africa November 8, 2013 On Saturday evening the Millennium Stadium will play host to two of international rugby’s most muscular outfits. This is the first time the sides have met since the 2011 World Cup and Wales will be fully aware of their terrible record against the Springboks, having only beaten them once in the last 107 years. South Africa have only been beaten twice in 2013, both times by an impeccable New Zealand side, and after finishing second in the Rugby Championship, the visitors will be looking to leave Europe with nothing less than a clean sweep. Wales are coming off the back of a disappointing tour of Japan, but the touring party was more of a development squad and now Wales have all of their British and Irish Lions back as they attempt to maul some powerful Springboks. Wales Injuries have forced Warren Gatland to pick a fresh-faced backline. Liam Williams replaces Eli Walker, who suffered a hamstring injury in training on Thursday. Talisma ...
Wales name team to face Boks 2013-11-05 Cardiff - Ospreys wing Eli Walker is set to make his Wales debut against the Springboks after being named in coach Warren Gatland's starting side to face the Springboks at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday. The 21-year-old has been given his chance after injury ruled out wing Alex Cuthbert from the first of Wales's four November internationals. Meanwhile Rhys Priestland returns at fly-half after missing all of Wales's Six Nations title-winning campaign last season with an Achilles injury. British and Irish Lions skipper Sam Warburton again captains the side from the back-row where Dan Lydiate, one of the stars of the combined side's 2-1 series win in Australia this year, makes his first Wales appearance since 2012 following an ankle injury. Walker has long been regarded as one of the best finishers in the Celtic League but a back injury ruled him out of both the Six Nations and Wales's two-Test pre-season tour of Japan. "Eli has impressed for his region and while w ...
Lions’ triumph has boosted Wales Wales have not won a November Test since 2009, but former flyhalf Barry John believes the Six Nations champions will win three of their four matches this month. Since beating Argentina 33-16 in Cardiff, Wales have achieved the following results in end-of-year Tests: 2009 Lost 33-12 to Wallabies 2010 Lost 25-16 to Wallabies Lost 29-25 to Springboks Drew 16-16 with Fiji Lost 37-25 to All Blacks 2012 Lost 26-12 to Argentina Lost 26-19 to Samoa Lost 33-10 to All Blacks Lost 14-12 to Wallabies Since Warren Gatland was appointed Wales coach, they have lost 21 out of 22 matches against the big three southern hemisphere sides (their sole victory came against the Wallabies in 2008). However, a British & Irish Lions team stacked with Wales players, and coached by Gatland, won a series in Australia earlier this year, which John says will give Wales new belief going into this November campaign. 'The confidence is there now from the players who went on the Lions Tour and starred in t ...

Wales Squad for Autumn Internationals October 22, 2013 Wales boss Warren Gatland has named three uncapped players in a 35-man squad for next month’s Tests against South Africa, Argentina, Tonga and Australia. Ospreys wing Eli Walker, Cardiff Blues centre Cory Allen and Scarlets scrum-half Rhodri Williams have all been selected. But there are no places for injured British and Irish Lions backs Jamie Roberts and Alex Cuthbert or Blues captain Matthew Rees. Racing Metro centre Roberts is recovering from an ankle injury, while Blues wing Cuthbert suffered an ankle problem during last weekend’s Heineken Cup victory over European champions Toulon. The Blues have today announced Rees will be out of the game for an enforced period after undergoing testicular surgery. Perpignan back James Hook, who last started for Wales against another Test-playing country two years ago, has made the squad, which is based largely on last season’s RBS 6 Nations title-winning group. There is also a place for scrum-half Mike P ...

Gatland: Lions can roar again Warren Gatland: Turns attention backto coaching Wales Warren Gatland believes the British and Irish Lions will have what it takesto end a 42-year wait for a Test seriesvictory over New Zealand. This year's Lions squad are still celebrating a 2-1 success over Australia - their first Test series win since 1997 - achieved with a number of exciting young players playing crucial roles. Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Alex Corbisiero, Sam Warburton, Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau all shone and Gatland expects them to be the world-class talent at the heart of the 2017 touring squad. Asked if he thought the Lions could win in New Zealand, current Lions boss Gatland said: "Yes, I think if we get things right in terms of the preparation and stuff. "If you look at how young this squad is, a lot of them could be around in four years' time. "If they are playing well enough and you have got four more years' experience on some young heads, some young shoulders and they are in their late 20s, t ...
Congratulations to The British & Irish Lions for a brilliant series win.. ..and massive credit where it's due to Warren Gatland.
Hi guys just home hat a result for the LIONS they won by 20 odd points just as well he picked the right team I what the people who commented so negatively think now especially the Irish and I British Lion Keith Wood think how wrong you all were I hate the word legend used far to commonly these days but I think Warren Gatland will probably become one since its so long since the lions won a series against the Australians
Gatland decisions vindicated By Reuters SYDNEY - A record third Test win provided emphatic vindication for British and Irish Lions' coach Warren Gatland's decision to rely on muscle to overcome Australia after enduring 72 hours of vilification for his team selections. The four tries that helped the Lions to a 41-16 win and a first test series triumph since 1997 put a considerable gloss on the result but there can have been few test victories more solidly built on the engine room of the pack. A Wallabies' scrum that had held their own in the tight first two tests were pulverised in the set-piece at the Olympic Stadium, conceding penalty after penalty as they crumbled before the red onslaught. In the breakdown and around the fringes, openside Sean O'Brien and number eight Toby Faletau - both brought into the beefed up pack for the decider - tackled like demons and crashed repeatedly into the home defence with ball in hand. Gatland had been subjected to a furious backlash for picking a starting team with 10 ...
Please try to answer the following multiple choice question correctly. You may select more than one answer:- After their stunning 41-16 victory over Australia today (and completing a 2-1 series win in the process), what will the 2013 British and Irish Lions now be known as? A: Heroes B: Legends C: Icons D: ALL OF THE ABOVE What a second half exhibition of rugby that was!! Warren Gatland, my sincere apologies for doubting your decision to drop Brian O'Driscoll. As for the try scorers, Alex Corbisiero, Jonathan Sexton, George North, Jamie Roberts: I love you all. Finally, Leigh Halfpenny: You are a goalkicking points machine. Your man-of-the series award is well deserved. Thank you guys for an unforgettable series. Now all i can say is: Roll on the Ashes!!!
I have deliberately said nothing on the Lions Tour until now! Let me state that I believe Brian O’Driscoll is a “Once in a life time” player, but the rubbish thrown at Warren Gatland this week has been nothing short of incredible! I even heard an ex-lion state that even if the Lion’s win the final test Gatland has gone against the “ethos” of what the Lions are all about! Well that sums up the “British” mentality…all about personality and smiling in defeat, as long as the ethos is not changed! As the British and Irish Lions stand on the verge of a brilliant test victory in Australia, Mr Gatland you can now stand tall, you picked the players you trusted in and boy did they deliver! Come on the Lions!!!

Video: Warren Gatland could do with viewing this video analysis
I've been hoping the British & Irish Lions win for the whole tour but now there's a small part of me that wants to see them lose just so Warren Gatland can see you shouldn't be bias when it comes to team selection. The Lions should have a coach that hasn't coached any of the home nations. To put out nearly a full Welsh team is ridiculous. BOD not even on the bench is madness and bringing in 3 injured players when they have more than capable cover else where. I think it's time to bring in new rules for an even number of home nation players in the training squad.
The Wallabies should team up with the All Blacks and the Springboks to tackle the British and Irish Lions, Australian Rugby Union Chief Executive Bill Pulver said Wednesday. "I would love the idea if you could find a Southern Hemisphere combination," Pulver told reporters ahead of Saturday's series…

The British and Irish Lions drop O'driscoll for the third test match?! Now I almost hope they lose just to prove that Warren Gatland is dumbest coach of all time.
Extract from Wikipedia about Warren Gatland. Warren David Gatland (born 17 September 1963) is a former New Zealand rugby footballer, he's a complete *** and the current Head Coach of the Wales national team.[1] He is also the Head Coach for the 2013 British and Irish Lions Tour of Australia.[2]
Warren Gatland has made six changes to the side that faced the Wallabies last weekend, shocking fans by dropping Brian O'Driscoll, who had been widely tipped to captain the team in his last ever British & Irish Lions game.
Former Ireland captain Keith Wood believes Warren Gatland has "made a terrible mistake" by leaving Brian O'Driscoll out of the British and Irish Lions' deciding Test against Australia.

In a move that surprised the rugby world, veteran Welsh winger Shane Williams has been added to the British and Irish Lions squad. The 36 year old former World Player of the Year was due to work as a radio pundit an the 1st test against Australia this weekend but has changed his plans after receiving the call up. Lions coach Warren Gatland confirmed that Williams will play against the ACT Brumbies on Tuesday then leave the camp on Wednesday. Williams, who has been playing 2nd tier rugby in Japan with Mitsubishi Dynabours, is 1 of 3 players called up with English backs Brad Barritt and Christian Wade also named to play against the Brumbies. Irishman Rory Best will captain the side which also features Sean O'Brien and Robert Kearney, making his 1st start of the tour, while Simon Zebo is named amongst the replacements. Billy Twelvetrees, who only arrived in Australia on Friday, will line up at inside centre with George North, Jamie Roberts, Tommy Bowe and Manu Tuilagi all battling injuries of varying degrees ...
When will Toby Flood be called up by Warren Gatland and asked to play for the British & Irish Lions. Toby is far to food to leave behind.
Injuries mounting up for the Lions!!! Jamie Roberts became the latest British & Irish Lions threequarter to pick up an injury when he hobbled out of the 47-17 win over the HSBC Waratahs in Sydney. The 2009 Test Lion had to leave the field with six minutes left to play after damaging his right leg. He will have the injury scanned today. "We will get Jamie scanned on Sunday. The medics thought it might have been a hamstring, but he said he has never pulled a hamstring before, so he is not kind of sure. It is fingers crossed it might not be that," said Head Coach Warren Gatland. The Lions have already had injury concerns in the past week over centres Brian O'Driscoll and Manu Tuilagi, while George North has been nursing a hamstring tweak - not what the coach needs or wants a week out from the first Test. "Manu trained on Friday and his shoulder is still a bit sore. George's hamstring is still a bit tight and so we are still progressing with them with the medics," said Gatland. "Our hope is that both of them ...
British and Irish Lions name team to play Combined Country XV Posted on Jun 9, 2013 Warren Gatland has named his team to play a Combined Country XV on Tuesday in Newcastle. Alex Corbisiero is set to make his first start, while fellow injury replacement Ryan Grant is named on the bench. Stuart Hogg gets an outing at fly-half with Sean Maitland slotting in at fullback, while the side is captained by Brian O’Driscoll in the midfield. He links up with 2009 centre partner Jamie Roberts. “The Reds game was always going to be a big challenge, and I was delighted at the victory and the way we were tested,” said Warren Gatland. “It was a very physical match, as we knew it would be. We now move on to Newcastle and another challenge. “This team to play Country includes three players – Richie Gray, Alex Cuthbert and Stuart Hogg – who are starting their second game in a row, plus another, George North, who came off the bench early against the Reds. “This is the nature of Lions Tours as we adapt to inju ...
Another Lion bows out of tour The British and Irish Lions have suffered yet another injury blow, with Irish winger Tommy Bowe set to undergo the knife on a broken hand. Bowe picked up the injury in the Lions' 22-12 victory over the Queensland Reds on Saturday night, and coach Warren Gatland said he would miss the remainder of the tour. "According to the medics he'll probably need an operation," he said. "I think you can deduce from this that he'll play no further part. I would say that's it as far as Tommy is concerned." Gatland was in no doubt as to the significance of the loss. "The experience he brings, and being able to play right wing, left wing, centre and full back, means he is a huge loss for us. He slotted in well on the left wing tonight. "If you think about the two guys we are bringing out in terms of replacements they are absolutely quality players. If Alex Corbisiero hadn't been injured then he would have been in the mix and Ryan Grant has had an excellent season as well." The latest setback ...
Gatland wants a tougher test Perth - British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland has called for tougher challenges in his team's forthcoming matches on their tour of Australia after the visitors overwhelmed a depleted Western Force side 69-17 on Wednesday. Force coach Michael Foley, with one eye on Sunday's clash with the New South Wales Waratahs, selected seven players in the Perth-based Super Rugby side who have not played in the southern hemisphere competition. "The Force were thinking of their Super Rugby game on the weekend making a few changes, that's their prerogative," Gatland told reporters. "Ideally I would have liked to have played against a stronger game but we just made the focus about ourselves and I'm sure the (Queensland) Reds will be lot tougher in Brisbane on Saturday." The Force are bottom of the Australian conference in Super Rugby with only three wins from their 14 matches but they did manage to run in two tries against the Lions as well as disrupt a couple of lineout throws by Rory ...

A Welsh-heavy Great British and Irish Lions side opened their Tour with a straightforward 59-8 victory over the Barbarians in Hong Kong. The Lions ran in eight tries – with seven of them coming from Welshmen. Captain Paul O'Connell was the only non-Welshman to get over as he scored the opening try of the Tour while scrum-half Mike Phillips and winger Alex Cuthbert helped themselves to two tries each. Jonathan Davies, Dan Lydiate and replacement Alun Wyn-Jones also went over on a day when Warren Gatland decided to start with nine Welsh players and 11 Lions debutants. England's Owen Farrell had an up and down performance at fly-half before being replaced by Ireland's Jonny Sexton who himself missed three, admittedly tough, conversion attempts. Kahn Fotuali'I off a lovely set-up from former All Black Joe Rokocoko scored the only try for an enthusiastic, but ultimately outmatched Barbarians side who should have had Schalk Brits sent-off for a clear punch on Farrell after just eight minutes only for referee ...

Kiwi coaches Robbie Deans and Warren Gatland face contrasting pressures ahead of the British and Irish Lions' visit to Australia.
Ronan O'Gara's retirement from professional rugby brings to an end an achievement-packed career that saw him dominate matches in Ireland and around the world in the colours of Cork Constitution, Munster, Ireland and the British & Irish Lions. A consistently influential figure for both Munster and Ireland for almost 14 years, Ronan O'Gara leaves a legacy to Irish rugby and Irish sport, in general, that will live long in the memory. The Corkman used his first column in the Irish Examiner newspaper today to confirm the news that he is to take up a coaching position with French club Racing Métro 92, as he moves from the playing to coaching ranks. "I have ambitions in the years ahead to coach at a high level and, with this in mind, I can confirm now that I will be joining Racing Métro's coaching staff in July," he wrote. "I am trusting my instinct and it is telling me now is the appropriate time to stop (playing). Could I have played on for another year? Of course I could, but I feel it’s getting harder an ...
