Gatland: Lions can roar again Warren Gatland: Turns attention backto coaching Wales Warren Gatland believes the British and Irish Lions will have what it takesto end a 42-year wait for a Test seriesvictory over New Zealand. This year's Lions squad are still celebrating a 2-1 success over Australia - their first Test series win since 1997 - achieved with a number of exciting young players playing crucial roles. Leigh Halfpenny, George North, Alex Corbisiero, Sam Warburton, Dan Lydiate and Toby Faletau all shone and Gatland expects them to be the world-class talent at the heart of the 2017 touring squad. Asked if he thought the Lions could win in New Zealand, current Lions boss Gatland said: "Yes, I think if we get things right in terms of the preparation and stuff. "If you look at how young this squad is, a lot of them could be around in four years' time. "If they are playing well enough and you have got four more years' experience on some young heads, some young shoulders and they are in their late 20s, t ...
Please try to answer the following multiple choice question correctly. You may select more than one answer:- After their stunning 41-16 victory over Australia today (and completing a 2-1 series win in the process), what will the 2013 British and Irish Lions now be known as? A: Heroes B: Legends C: Icons D: ALL OF THE ABOVE What a second half exhibition of rugby that was!! Warren Gatland, my sincere apologies for doubting your decision to drop Brian O'Driscoll. As for the try scorers, Alex Corbisiero, Jonathan Sexton, George North, Jamie Roberts: I love you all. Finally, Leigh Halfpenny: You are a goalkicking points machine. Your man-of-the series award is well deserved. Thank you guys for an unforgettable series. Now all i can say is: Roll on the Ashes!!!
British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland has sprung one of the great surprises in the tourists' history by dropping Brian O'Driscoll for Saturday's series decider against Australia. O'Driscoll was the favourite to lead the Lions in the final Test at Sydney's ANZ Stadium after Sam Warburton was ruled out with a hamstring injury, but instead he has been omitted from the 23 with Alun-Wyn Jones named captain. The O'Driscoll-Jonathan Davies midfield partnership used for the first two Tests has been broken up, with Jamie Roberts picked at inside centre following his return from a hamstring injury. Davies moves to outside centre while Sean O'Brien, Alex Corbisiero, Richard Hibbard, Toby Faletau and Mike Phillips are promoted to a starting XV showing six changes to the side beaten 16-15 in Melbourne. It is a radically altered team but the dominant talking point will be the decision to axe 2005 Lions captain O'Driscoll for the first time in his 14-year professional career. The conundrum facing Gatland was ...
Lions Squad Analysis for 2nd Test Posted on Jun 27, 2013 The old adage goes that ‘you should never change a winning team’ but clearly this message has been lost on Warren Gatland, who has made five changes to his test XV ahead of the second test on Saturday. In the forwards, Mako Vunipola and Geoff Parling have replaced Alex Corbisiero and Paul O’Connell, both of whom are injured, and Tom Croft, who drops to the bench, has been replaced by Dan Lydiate. In the backs, Ben Youngs and the fit-again Tommy Bowe are preferred to Mike Phillips and Alex Cuthbert, with the winger dropping to the bench at the expense of Sean Maitland. Vunipola was unlucky to miss out on a starting role in the first test after his imperious form in the warm-up games, but ultimately the decision to opt for Corbisiero, a more proficient scrummager, proved to be the right call. The question now is whether or not Gatland should have selected Ryan Grant, who takes his place on the bench, ahead of Vunipola, with the latter resuming h ...
Warren Gatland has picked his Lions XV. England prop Alex Corbisiero was the surprise inclusion in the British and Irish Lions team named for Saturday's opening Test against Australia.Mako Vunipola was expected to start at loosehead having impressed on the tour to date, but he must settle for a plac...
Ryan Grant to be called on for Melbourne Test? Posted on Jun 26, 2013 Lions coach Warren Gatland has food for thought after Ryan Grant’s solid performance yesterday against the Melbourne Rebels– making it unclear whether Mako Vunipola will be first choice for the loosehead prop shirt. Mako Vunipola was, for many, the natural replacement for injured Alex Corbisiero but after the Lions’ scrum dissolved just after half-time in the first Test with the replacement front-row coming on, the Lions head coach might need to rethink. Many of the ‘second string’, including Sean O’Brien and Manu Tuilagi, laid a marker down in yesterday’s 35-0 win and in the engine room Grant stated his case for inclusion. The man from Fife scrummaged well – albeit against less testing opposition – and if Gatland is picking his second Test side for the same reasons as the first, then Grant’s performance at the set piece would merit his inclusion over Vunipola. Grant also impressed in open play, carrying the ball fiv ...
British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland revealed that Alex Corbisiero's superior scrummaging resulted in his selection ahead of Mako Vunipola for Saturday's opening Test against Australia.

British and Irish Lions name team to play Combined Country XV Posted on Jun 9, 2013 Warren Gatland has named his team to play a Combined Country XV on Tuesday in Newcastle. Alex Corbisiero is set to make his first start, while fellow injury replacement Ryan Grant is named on the bench. Stuart Hogg gets an outing at fly-half with Sean Maitland slotting in at fullback, while the side is captained by Brian O’Driscoll in the midfield. He links up with 2009 centre partner Jamie Roberts. “The Reds game was always going to be a big challenge, and I was delighted at the victory and the way we were tested,” said Warren Gatland. “It was a very physical match, as we knew it would be. We now move on to Newcastle and another challenge. “This team to play Country includes three players – Richie Gray, Alex Cuthbert and Stuart Hogg – who are starting their second game in a row, plus another, George North, who came off the bench early against the Reds. “This is the nature of Lions tours as we adapt to inju ...
