So what are the chances? Joe and I are walking down the main road in Killarney this evening. He hears a street musician play one bar of "Waltzing Matilda" down the road to the right. Before we reach him and his crowd, we pass a guy on the left with a tin whistle, looking very street musician-like, and he's playing a counterpoint accompaniment. We chat with said street musician and learn he lives in Germany (20+ years), is in town for a juggling convention, and is from MD. Not just MD, but Silver Spring/Wheaton. Like Kemp Mill. AND he was born 8/1/51. JFK HS class of '69. Oh. Em. Gee.

Starting today we give you a run down on Australian music that you can hear on Radio Sydney. The music of Australia has an extensive history stretching back to the Indigenous and colonial societies. Indigenous Australian music is a part of the unique heritage of a 40,000–60,000 year history which produced the iconic didgeridoo. Contemporary fusions of Indigenous and Western styles (exemplified in the works of No Fixed Address, Yothu Yindi, Christine Anu and Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu) mark distinctly Australian contributions to world music. During its early western history, Australia was a collection of British colonies, and Australian folk music and bush ballads such as Waltzing Matilda were heavily influenced by Anglo-Celtic traditions, while classical forms were derived from those of Europe. Contemporary Australian music ranges across a broad spectrum with trends often concurrent with those of the US, the UK, and similar nations – notably in the Australian rock and Australian country music genres. ...

The Missus asked me a few questions tonight while watching the news i thought id look something up.and the fact that it is Australia Day weekend...I was asked what a Waltzing Matlida is - so i said walking around with your swag on your back, that was easy and we like to camp and stuff.but.. Heres some useless info ( Swami Bob ) the song Waltzing Matilda is in fact a 3rd or 4th variation of Banjo Pattersons first lyrics and then adapted for an add in the 1930s BUT IS OWNED BY COPYRIGHT BY AN AMERICAN COMPANY. In fact from what i can see, the Aussie Olympic committee had to pay the American company copy right dollars to play the song at the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta..TRUE OR FACT either way, pretty funny how we sing about a guy who flogs a sheep and then commits suicide in a dam to get away from the coppers...lol. just putting it out there..or on here, either way the song still gets a good going with a few bevvies and they didnt teach me that stuff at school..
Something trivial about Australia's national anthem. If Australia won a Gold Medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, the anthem that would have played is. Waltzing Matilda. But it didn't. Imagine trying to explain a national anthem about a guy who steals a sheep and kills himself to avoid being arrested. (And Matilda is not a person, it is his swag). Advance Australia Fair was not the official anthem for another decade.

A Blonde was sent on her way to Heaven. Upon arrival, a concerned St Peter met her at the Pearly Gates. 'I'm sorry, 'St Peter said; 'But Heaven is suffering from an overload of goodly souls and we have been forced to put up an Entrance Exam for new arrivals to ease the burden of Heavenly Arrivals.' 'That's cool' said the blonde, 'What does the Entrance Exam consist of?' 'Just three questions' said St Peter. 'Which are?' asked the blonde. 'The first,' said St Peter, 'is, which two days of the week start with the letter 'T' 'The second is 'How many seconds are there in a year?' 'The third is 'What was the name of the swag-man in Waltzing Matilda?' 'Now,' said St Peter, 'Go away and think about those questions and when I call upon you, I shall expect you to have those answers for me.' So the blonde went away and gave those three questions some considerable thought (I expect you to do the same). The following morning, St Peter called upon the blonde and asked if she had considered the questions, to which she ...

Driving north today we hit the Tropic of Capricorn but we didn’t feel much of a bump. The outback is very dry and hot and tourists have all gone home to the south – except for the inexperienced who are in our car. We passed through Waltzing Matilda country along the Barcoo and towns with evocative names like Cunnamulla (‘long water’), Charleville, Blackall and now Longreach where we have a cabin over the road from a Boeing 747 and a 707 parked on the side of the highway and we are next door to the Stockmans Hall of Fame. Maybe tomorrow we might play at being bushrangers or stage drivers.

Shipboard Observations: Thursday July 4th: American Independence Day Joy oh joy! - it's American Independence Day and don't we know it! Red, white and blue balloons, red, white and blue jellies and a giant U.S. flag cake plus many, many loud, painful Americans - what bliss! I have been very tempted to break into a few choruses of "Waltzing Matilda"! Spotted this afternoon, in the Lido buffet restaurant, the female equivalent of Mr. Creosote from the Monty Python movie, "the Meaning of Life". Description: American female; aged about 25, estimated weight - about 2 tonnes. (the ship was actually listing to the side that she was sitting); she was eating simultaneously from 3 different plates. I actually saw them loading extra supplies on board the ship whist in Venice - now I know why. At the end of her feast, after eating non-stop for 3 hours, she called for a bucket but unfortunately she had that one last grape and then exploded. I'm still washing "it" off me 2 hours later.
Slim Dusty's 1957 hit "A Pub with No Beer" was the biggest-selling record by an Australian up to that time; it was also the first Australian single to go gold, and the first and only 78 rpm record to be awarded a gold disc. Slim collected collected more gold and platinum albums than any other Australian artist and he was the first singer in the world to have his voice beamed to earth from space when American astronauts played Slim Dusty's recording of Waltzing Matilda from the space shuttle 'Columbia' as it passed over Australia back in 1983. There's more about Slim on our website. A true Aussie Legend.

I am impressed though I don't speak "organese".

I went to a funeral today (nobody I knew) and got talking to one of the funeral directors, asking what he had seen that was funny. He told me that he went to a funeral a couple of years ago where the organist was an old lady who was renowned for liking a tipple or two. The people were all in the church mourning the poor departed, and they stood up to sing The Lord is my shepherd. They had sang the first four verses when the lady at the organ turned the page on her music book. The Vicar noticed and whispered loudly to her that they hadn't finished that particular hymn yet and to turn the page back. But she didn't and cracked on with the music she had in front of her. So the congregation are trying to sing the last verse of The Lord is my shepherd while the old lady was banging out Waltzing Matilda!! I haven't laughed like that in ages!! :-) Anybody heard of anything similar that raised a chuckle?

Sometimes you just can't help but laugh, even when you feel about as bad as you've ever felt! Hope all my dearest dears are "waltzing Matilda," today... stay away from that Pneumonia - she's bad news even on a sunny day!! love and hugs out from the Ridge this a.m. SK
Part two of reciting poetry at my library. On Friday I read one of my favorite poems Warning by Jenny Joseph. Afterwards the nice librarian asked if I am familiar with Betty Collins's ripost to that poem. I have found it now though dont get it why its called a ripost if she wrote it about 40 years later than the Warning was published. I think I analyse it too much! Lol. I do like the ripost as well. Both copied and pasted below, Enjoy! Warning When I am an old woman I shall wear purple With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me. And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter. I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells And run my stick along the public railings And make up for the sobriety of my youth. I shall go out in my slippers in the rain And pick flowers in other people's gardens And learn to spit. You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat And eat three pounds of sau ...
san pedro de atacama, driest desert in the world??? i don't think so!! beautiful scenery, with a downpour out of this world the day before yesterday- the drainage system just wasn't able to cope-water up to knees in the main street, water running down the walls and through the roof of the hostel, roads collapsing, no electricity, no buses leaving.but all is well, fortunately we got a lift (an expensive one!!) with a local guy and his family to a bus station in calama so that we could catch a connection to iquique back on the coast...another gorgeous beach city.heading there now! x p.s. on the drive to calama another tourist, an older spanish speaking man travelling with his wife, tried to have a conversation with us...it only got as far as "I love Sydney and I like the big red rock (Uluru)" before my Spanish and his English ran out...until half an hour later he starts singing to me in Spanish--the song?? Waltzing Matilda!!
(Seriously, I couldn't be bothered changing the channel, and after a little while, I didn't want to) They stopped Rage, at 9 o'clock this morning, to telecast the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony from Canberra. On the shore of Lake Burley Griffin the Federation Guard, a conglomerate of Navy, Army and Airforce personnel, marched out stiffly and efficiently to the tune of Waltzing Matilda, and came to halt behind a modest dais. The Governor-General, Quentin Bryce, did a little tour around the ranks of the guard, casually chatting with her escort, as did the Prime Minister, who took a moment to quietly thank them for the service they were doing for their country. That was as much pomp and formality there was to be on this day. As the breeze fluttered past the huge flag atop the distant Parliament house, on this side of Lake Burley Griffin, four more flags were unfurled. The announcer, Adam Spencer, made mention of the "Canadian Flagpole," which piqued my curiosity. He then explained that ...

Who'll go a Waltzing Matilda with me?
To my family in Australia, Happy Australia Day. To the Americans FB friends, want to tell you about the year I was in Australia for Australia Day. In the evening, my sister Helen and her husband Jeff Brazier took me to Jeff's brothers home. It overlooked the Swan river which runs through Perth. There were a couple hundred thousand people at the river and up in Kings park overlooking the river, to see the fireworks show. The show was all set to music which played on the local radio during the show. At different times during the evening the announcer would tell eveyone on one bank or the other or in the park to flash lights. everyone brought flashlights and would flash at everyone else. And at the finale of the show, ALL those people sang Waltzing Matilda together. All those people singing together, because they were Australian. It was wonderful and awe inspiring. Unity. We could learn something from them.
And I also leave you with Mr. Rolf Harris doing Waltzing Matilda.
Australia Day coming up. A "Waltzing Matilda" campfire. Did you know that the famous Australian bush poet Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson was married to Alice Walker in the little timber Presbyterian Church in Tenterfield. The church is still in use. Check it out when you visit Tenterfield
