A radically reduced Radek (SIKORSKI). Article from Business New Europe Jan Cienski in Warsaw January 21, 2015 Radek Sikorski has had a terrible last year, and unfortunately for the former Polish foreign minister and now parliamentary speaker, the troubles that are threatening to derail his political career are showing no sign of ending – something that has senior politicians predicting his imminent political death. Sikorski, 51, started 2014 as an international star. He had been one of the main promoters of the idea of trying to rope ex-Soviet republics like Ukraine and Moldova more closely to the EU through the Eastern Partnership – a Polish-Swedish initiative. The decision by former Ukrainain President Viktor Yanukovych to back away from an EU free trade and association deal that in large part stemmed from that scheme set off a rebellion that ended up overthrowing his kleptocratic regime and led to the current confrontation with Russia. Sikorski jetted into Kyiv in February 2014, playing a key role ...

Former Congressman Ron Paul defended the Russian government on Sunday and slammed Western leaders for spreading "propaganda" after a Malaysian Airlines plane was allegedly shot down by Kremlin-backed separatists in Ukraine. "Western politicians and media joined together to gain the maximum propaganda value from the disaster. It had to be Russia; it had to be Putin, they said," the former presidential candidate wrote. "While western media outlets rush to repeat government propaganda on the event, there are a few things they will not report." One of those unreported things, Paul claimed in his weekly "Texas Straight Talk" column, was the United States' own responsibility for destabilizing the region. Ukraine is currently embroiled in violent conflict between the Ukrainian government and the pro-Russian separatists. "They will not report that the crisis in Ukraine started late last year, when EU and US-supported protesters plotted the overthrow of the elected Ukrainian President, Viktor Yanukovych. Without U ...
Yanukovych, Then Putin, Violated the Donbas’ Trust Viktor Yanukovych, then Vladimir Putin, betrayed the residents of the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine. First, Yanukovych’s misrule, empty promises, and cowardly departure from Ukraine undermined the Donbas’ people. Then, Putin’s deceitful propaganda machine, support for armed thugs, and public abandonment of pro-Russian separatists left the Donbas in the crossfire and at the mercy of armed gangs. The Donbas is increasingly unlikely to continue to blindly trust pro-Russian separatists, especially as the rest of Ukraine moves forward and starts the painful process of eliminating corruption and building a modern democratic state. Residents of the Donbas, who collectively gave Viktor Yanukovych more than 90 percent of their votes in the second round of the 2010 presidential election, suffered Yanukovych’s misrule and corruption to the same extent as the rest of the country. Over the past two years, Ukraine’s economy has stagnated with almost zero ...

Full Image WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden's visit Saturday to support Ukraine's fragile democracy came soon after his youngest son was hired by a private Ukrainian company that promotes energy independence from Moscow. Yet that company leases natural gas fields in the breakaway Russian-backed state of Crimea and is owned by a former government minister with ties to Ukraine's ousted pro-Russian president. The hiring of Hunter Biden, 44, by Burisma Holdings Limited in April was approved by the company's owner, a former senior minister and political ally of Viktor Yanukovych, the exiled Ukrainian President. Ukraine: A Far Cry From Europe’s Far Right Kyiv, 27 May, 2014. An early presidential election took place in Ukraine on May 25. Despite ongoing instability and violence in the east of the country, a record-breaking turnout of voters – more than 61% – came out to vote nationwide. According to preliminary results, the vast majority of Ukrainians – nearly 60% – have voted for Petro Poroshenko, an active participant in the Euromaidan protests and a multi-millionaire businessman. The two far-right nationalist parties, Svoboda and Right Sector, received less than 2 percent of the votes between them. These results debunk the Kremlin-sponsored myth about neo-Nazis coming to power in Ukraine. The May 25 presidential elections ended a transitional period in Ukrainian politics: since former President Viktor Yanukovych fled the country in late February, Ukraine has been governed by an Acting Head of State, an Acting Prime Minister and an Acting Government. Under these circumstances, with only the Parliament ...
BREAKING, PETRO wins Ukraine election... As per Fox news. Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s ‘chocolate king,’ poised to win presidential election By Matthew Fisher, Postmedia News May 23, 2014 KYIV, Ukraine — “Chocolate King” Petro Poroshenko, the frontrunner to become Ukraine’s next president, will almost certainly win Sunday’s election, replacing Viktor Yanukovych who was ousted in a violent coup in February. However, the question remains whether Poroshenko will become president on Sunday. To do that he has to get at least 50 per cent, plus one of the votes in the first ballot of the presidential race. Or will the billionaire, who has been involved in Ukrainian politics for years, fall short of the magic figure, forcing this fractious, impoverished eastern European nation to wait for a second ballot on June 15 in which he would face the runner up from Sunday’s ballot? If it takes two rounds to elect Poroshenko this might give pro-Moscow separatists, already causing mayhem in the east o ...

Daily Market Brief (Fri): What better way to head into the holiday weekend than three-straight days of gains, the strongest weekly return in over a month and a fresh all-time high? The S&P 500 rose +0.4% for the day and +1.2% for the week, while closing out above 1,900 for the first time ever. Both bond and equity prices rallied, except for Utilities and Energy, which sank lower. Utilities fell out of favor this week, down nearly -1.0% as investors sought more risky holdings. On the cusp of Sunday’s Ukrainian Presidential election, Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out in opposition of the vote, calling it a contrived effort by the U.S. and European Union. Putin decried the economic sanctions placed on his top officials and the Russian economy. He also cautioned against a brewing “civil war” that has bubbled between Russia and Ukraine since former President Viktor Yanukovych was ousted in February. The market remains unfazed so far despite such geopolitical tensions. However, the S&P has traded ...
Ukraine News Summary: May 23rd, 2014 International News: Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that although he considers deposed President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to be the legitimate president of Ukraine, he will “respect the choice of the people of Ukraine” during the upcoming May 25th presidential election. The statement comes a day after Russia withdrew some troops from the Ukrainian border. However, according to the Pentagon there are still enough troops on the Russian side of the border to launch an invasion of Ukraine. National News: The Security Service of Ukraine [SBU] has reported that it has managed to identify and quarantine a computer virus which was meant to attack the Central Electoral Commission’s computer systems during the election, effectively nullifying the results of the May 25th election. In a separate statement the SBU announced that the former leadership of the Prosecutor General’s Office may be responsible for financing pro-Russian separatists in Eastern Ukr ...
Ukraine Almost in State of Civil War – Russian Defense Minister. After the overthrow of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych in February, Ukraine “has practically slid into a civil war,” Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said Friday.
The Russian President Vladimir Putin says the world should not be dominated by one power as America’s unipolar vision of the world has failed. Putin said that the crisis in has evolved into a full-scale civil war, blaming Washington for backing the overthrow of former President Viktor Yanukovych. Putin accused the United States of choreographing a "coup" in February against President Viktor Yanukovych.
The New York Times The Opinion Pages | OP-ED CONTRIBUTOR The Pushback in Ukraine By ADRIAN KARATNYCKY MAY 23, 2014 KIEV, Ukraine — A few short weeks ago the Kiev I visited was awash in talk of terrorist plots and civil war. The lightning-quick annexation of Crimea by Russian troops had created much anxiety. People feared that the commemoration of May 9, the day on which Ukraine and Russia celebrate the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II, would encourage pro-Moscow insurgents to seize government buildings beyond their strongholds in eastern Ukraine. Hundreds of well-armed and well-trained men, many with links to Russia, had already moved into hard-scrabble industrial cities near the Russian border. There had been violent clashes between Ukrainian patriots and pro-Russian separatists in Odessa, in the south. The mood today is markedly different. Voters throughout Ukraine will go to the polls for the presidential election on Sunday amid clear signs that major unrest is abating and that President Vlad ...

Petro Poroshenko stood atop a bulldozer between a line of police and an angry crowd chanting expletives at him. Shouting into a loudhailer he urged calm, asking protesters to desist from storming the presidential headquarters in Kiev. Hardcore elements in the crowd didn't like his speech; they responded with jeers of *** and "Jew trash". (Actually, Poroshenko is a Christian.) Someone dragged him off his perch. Others managed to rescue him from this seething frontline. Masked youths grabbed the tractor and used it as a battering ram to force a path though police. Clouds of smoke billowed across Ukraine's warring capital. This was early December. Six months later Poro ...
For those who still believe the US innocent of staging a coup in the Ukraine, this refers to actions taken last September long before the coup. And magically, just as Clinton hoped for, the billionaire "chocolate king" is going to be elected in the staged elections. "Back in September, when Bill and Hillary Clinton graced the Ukrainian oligarch Victor Pinchuk's Yalta European Strategy (YES) conference in Crimea, they joined with other global leaders to encourage then-President Viktor Yanukovych and other Ukrainian leaders to press ahead with the country’s turn toward Brussels and away from Moscow. They thought it was a done deal, and Hillary even gave a public political blessing to the oligarch Petro Poroshenko, Ukraine’s “chocolate king,” who is widely expected to become the country’s next president in the election this Sunday." THIS ARTICLE APPEARED IN FOREIGN AFFAIRS ON MAY 11: On the March The Coming Rise of Ukrainian Ultra-Nationalists There has always been a kernel of truth in the accusations that pro-Russian partisans have raised about the revolution that deposed former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych earlier this year. The movement was indeed marked by a streak of aggressive nationalism: on Euromaidan, the blue-and-yellow flags of the far-right ultranationalist party, Svoboda, blended in with those of the European Union. And when violence broke out, far-right protesters from Svoboda and Right Sector, another ultranationalist party, stood side by side with liberal-democratic activists as they hurled Molotov cocktails at riot police. It wasn't difficult, in other words, for eastern Ukrainian separatists to conjure the specter of rabid Ukrainian nationalists in calling for yesterday's independence referendums. But the separatists' warnings will likely prove to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. If, as a result of the refere ...

Putin says Russia will "respect" Ukraine vote. But says that under constitution, Viktor Yanukovych remains in power:
By Bill Van Auken  23 May 2014 Ukrainian armed forces early Thursday suffered their worst losses since launching a military crackdown last month against civilian populations opposing Kiev’s coup regime in eastern and southern Ukraine. An attack on a pro-regime roadblock near the town of Volnovakha, about 20 miles south of the city of Donetsk, left 16 soldiers dead and at least 30 more wounded, a number of them gravely. Gunfire from anti-regime fighters apparently ignited an ammunitions dump leading to a massive explosion that burned and tore the turrets off of armored vehicles. According to initial reports from residents, the roadblock, located on the main road between Donetsk and the port city of Mariupol, had been manned by members of the National Guard, a force that has been hastily assembled with volunteers drawn from the neo-fascist Right Sector and other extreme nationalist elements. A commander of the insurgent force, which claims loyalty to the “Donetsk People’s Republic” that was proclai ...

Over the weekend, the Crimean Tatars and patriotic Ukrainians, defying the ban on assemblies imposed by the occupational rulers of Crimea, commemorated the 1944 deportation of Crimean Tatars from their ancestral Crimea ordered by Stalin. Tatars were shipped in freight trains to Central Asia, where more than 40 percent died of hunger and disease.   The Tatar community leader, Mustafa Dzhemilev, who was barred from Crimea after the Russian takeover, took part in the commemoration of the 1944 deportation in Kyiv, which was attended by several hundred people. Similar commemorations took place in other Ukrainian cities.     Stalin had planned also to deport all Ukrainians, but he was told that “there are too many of them.” He had to settle on selective deportations, which, as it turned out, included my entire family, all families of my aunts and uncles, and more than half of the residents of my native village, Volya Yakubova. Many, including my father and all but one of his brothers, never made it b ...

Please read everybody!! Why Crimea is so dangerous? The peninsula of Crimea in southern Ukraine is at the centre of what is being seen as the biggest crisis between Russia and the West since the Cold War. Troops loyal to Russia have taken control of the region and the pro-Russian parliament has voted to join the Russian Federation, to be confirmed in a referendum. Crimea is a centre of pro-Russian sentiment , which can spill into separatism. The region- a peninsula on Ukraine's Black Sea coast has 2.3 million people, a majority of whom identify themselves as ethnic Russians and speak Russian. The region voted heavily for Viktor Yanukovych in the 2010 oresudebtuak election, and many people there belive he is the victim of a coup-prompting separatists in Crimea's parliament to vote for joining the Russian Federation and a referendum on secession.
Yes, the Kremlin strongman would like to prevent Ukraine from integrating with the European Union, and to bite off as much of it as possible for his would-be Eurasian Union, a kind of Soviet Union lite. But ultimately Putin is acting defensively. He knows that if Ukraine’s democracy movement succeeds and the country prospers, it will become a model for Russia and his own autocracy will be doomed. “Putin is trying in Ukraine to set an example for Russia — to show that the result of a political change is a state of chaos,” said Tolokonnikova. “The main thing he is worried about is that what happened in Ukraine” — where mass protests forced Putin ally Viktor Yanukovych to flee the country — “will happen in Russia.”
From London's Sunday Times An amazingly balanced, well argued paper from the mainstream. While I would argue various points, it is far more useful to have such reasoned analysis in the mainstream press than in all the marginal blogs we read and write. PLEASE SHARE. JUST for a moment, it seemed as though a peaceful solution had been found to the standoff between Ukraine’s pro- Russian president, Viktor Yanukovych, and the pro- European demonstrators who had manned barricades in the centre of Kiev for more than three months. Stepping out onto the Maidan, the centre of protests on the evening of February 21, Vitali Klitschko, the boxing champion turned politician, announced a deal brokered by three visiting EU foreign ministers that would pave the way for new elections and the eventual departure of their hated kleptocratic president. But the crowd reacted with cries of “shame”. A coffin was hauled on to the stage as a reminder of the more than 70 people who had died in the previous day’s violence. In ...
Ron Paul: Western powers fomenting Ukrainian conflict, US should ‘stay out’: On the brink of what he calls a “civil war,” Ukraine must be allowed to resolve its differences free of Western forces antagonizing and incentivizing further clashes, Paul said, especially in the nation’s east where pro-Russian Ukrainians are moving to protect the area from the Western-backed government in Kiev. “Western Ukraine right now is being urged on by its Western supporters, meaning its NATO supporters, the European Union, the United States and the IMF (International Monetary Fund),” Paul wrote on his website, ronpaulchannel.com. Paul said the US and its allies provoked the Ukrainian conflict in the first place, despite what American media outlets and Western leaders claim about Russia’s culpability. “The truth is, the coup of several weeks ago to overthrow the elected leader Viktor Yanukovych was stirred up by the same group: NATO, the European Union, the U.S., and the IMF,” he wrote. Paul said that W ...

Ukraine’s Passion Lubomyr Luciuk The Whig Standard, 29 April 2014 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Jesus cried. Ukrainians know a similar agony. Over Easter I thought on Ukraine’s Passion. Conspired against by Vladimir Putin, a high priest of Russian revanchism and zealot who believes the Soviet Union’s collapse was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the 20th century, Ukraine’s crucifixion proceeds. First Crimea, Ukraine’s garden, was captured by a braying crowd of thugs-for-hire and Russian soldiers. Its indigenous people, Crimean Tartars, are now persecuted, and Ukrainian speakers harassed – their exodus to the still-free lands of Ukraine already begun. Yet Ukraine was not undone by the philistine Putin alone. There was a Judas, Viktor Yanukovych. His betrayal complete, his ‘thirty pieces of silver’ palmed, this Iscariot fled into the wilderness of Rostov-on-Don. Of no further use to Moscow – no state long harbours a traitor – he could soon be swinging off a scaf ...

Hello all, I was recently wondering about others opinions on the Ukraine crisis, as there seems no end in sight just yet. First off, I know Ukraine's people have a right to want to join the EU. I know that Viktor Yanukovych was corrupt. But could this not have been sorted out in a pacifist manner. Through elections or non-violent resistance. As some of you may recall in the 2004 with the Orange Revolution. For instance look at Ireland we protested about bailouts and the ruination of our economy, but there was never riots (This would have given off the wrong impression to the powers that be). Yet Greece & Spain have almost daily protests with many becoming violent. Ireland seems to be getting out of the economic depression slowly but surely, but the others are still floundering. I just feel like Ireland and many smaller countries have been betrayed in a sense with the Ukraine crisis. As we are all members of the EU should we not have getting the full support of the larger members and the ECB, yet they kept ...

Cold War Again: Who’s Responsible? [The Nation: Stephen F. Cohen] In the name of "Democracy," the West has unrelentingly moved its Military, Political and Economic Power ever closer to post-Soviet Russia. The East-West Confrontation over Ukraine, which led to Moscow’s annexation of Crimea but long predated it, is potentially the worst International Crisis in more than fifty years—and the most fateful. A negotiated resolution is possible, but time may be running out. A new Cold War divide is already descending in Europe—not in Berlin but on Russia’s borders. Worse may follow. If NATO Forces move into Western Ukraine or even to its border with Poland, as is being called for by zealous Cold Warriors in Washington and Brussels, Moscow is likely to send its Forces into eastern Ukraine. The result would be a danger of war comparable to the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962. Even if the outcome is the non-military “isolation of Russia,” today’s Western mantra, the consequences will be dire. Moscow wil ...
CHICAGO (AP) — One of Ukraine's most influential oligarchs and a major player in the sale of Russian natural gas to Ukraine allegedly spearheaded an international conspiracy to pay at least $18 million in bribes to mine titanium in India and sell it to a Chicago-based company, according to an indictment unsealed Wednesday by U.S. prosecutors. Just hours later, Chicago-based Boeing Co. said it had once signed a memorandum of understanding with a firm controlled by the oligarch, Dmytro Firtash, but never followed through on it. The indictment itself does not identify the Chicago-based company or accuse it of any wrongdoing. Firtash, a longtime ally of ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, is described as the ringleader of the alleged conspiracy that — starting in 2006 — sought to mine titanium deposits in the eastern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The enterprise was expected to generate more than $500 million annually from the sale of titanium, which is used in making items from golf clubs to ...
