Overheard with one ear from Kenyan newspaper, Daily Nation: Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho earned his degree from Kampala University legitimately, the institution's Vice Chancellor has said. Speaking to reporters in Nairobi on Sunday, Prof Badru Kateregga said Mr Joho attended the university from 2009 to 2012. “As far as Kampala University is concerned, the degree awarded to Mr Hassan Ali Joho is bonafide, lawful and authentic. (It) was genuinely awarded and Kampala University Senate cannot and will not recall, revoke or cancel an award that it deems to be valid, authentic and genuinely awarded,” he said. The Uganda National Council for Higher Education has doubted the validity of Mr Joho's degree. “There was no clear evidence that academic due process was followed from admission to graduation regarding a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (Human Resource Management option) awarded to Mr Hassan Ali Joho by Kampala University,” the council said in a resolution. Should I, should not? That is the question I ask myself very often these days. I spent eight (08) years as head of civil engineering at Kyambogo but never at any moment had I lost interest in my work. I disliked the witch hunt I was subjected to by my boss. I felt betrayed. My students and staff loved me and still do so up to today. I served them to the best of my ability. Prof John Opuda-Asibo, the Executive Director of the National Council for Higher Education is a fantastic academic. He is also very open about what he thinks. When I was appointed principal of UTC, even before I was posted to Kichwamba, he asked me, "Moses, why are you going to waste your PhD?". I answered him, "I know you like me a lot and you do not want to lose me but your boss does not like me. If tomorrow you become Vice Chancellor, I will come back". And I meant it. He loved honest and hardworking people but he never hid his dislike for laziness and mediocrity. He was liked and not-so-much liked in equal measure. I loved the man f ...
SASCO would like to take this opportunity to encourage students to embark on mass action in order to ensure that their demands are met. This is not a time to lock ourselves in boardrooms and have permanent meetings that do not resolve the plight of our students. We encourage those institutions that are already on strike such as Durban University of Technology (DUT), Vaal University of Technology (VUT), Cape Penninsula University of Technology (CPUT) and Mangosuthi University of Technology (MUT) to continue with their mass actions and further accelerate these strikes so that they are felt by the echelons of power in our universities and in the Department of Higher Education and Training. We have noted the various cases of victimization against student leaders for fighting against the exclusion of poor students as a result of the poor and unguided funding of NSFAS. This has strengthened our resolve to call for the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor of the University of Limpopo, Professor Mogalong, who continu ...

Towards Re-Africanizing African Universities: Who Killed Intellectualism in the Post Colonial Era? Ali A. Mazrui* In Memoriam: This lecture is dedicated to Dr. C. Odhiambo-Mbai who had invited Mazrui to give it, and who was later tragically assassinated in Nairobi, Kenya, on Sunday, September 14, 2003. I am delighted to be lecturing in Taifa Hall after many years. Under the previous political order a lecture by Mazrui at the University of Nairobi needed the permission not just of the Vice Chancellor but also of the Office of the Head of State. I hope that under the new dispensation all that was needed to invite me to give this lecture was the decision of the relevant department. The last time I lectured in Taifa Hall was about ten years ago when Kenyan alumni of the U.S. Fulbright-Scheme were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Fulbright and wanted me as their keynote speaker. My topic was relatively innocuous – “African Universities and the American Model of Higher Education.” Even such a lecture n ...
As the President then (in 2011),of the Walter Sisulu University ISRC, myself, the then Secretary-General, Vuyo Mditshwa as mandated by our constituency led by SASCO together with other stakeholders in council i,e. Nehawu & Nteu, met with the Minister of Higher Education & Training, Dr. Blade Ndzimande to ask him to intervene at WSU because of the financial crisis, administrative and academic problems that university had experienced under the management as led then by Professor M Balintulo as we had lost confidence as stakeholders that the management and the council at the time would be able to bring solutions to the different crises that the university faced. Through a consensus by the students and workers we demanded that the intervention by the Minister be to; 1. Disband the Council, 2, Relieve the Vice Chancellor (M Balintulo) from his contract, 3, Take charge of the finance and academic related departments as they had been identified as one of the departments that were not functioning effectively and . ...
