The North and its Many Spokesmen, By Garba Shehu Garba Shehu Anyone who wants to understand the undertone of confusion in the Northern Nigerian political landscape needs only to pay cursory attention to the array of cacophonous spokespersons, each claiming that they are speaking for the region. What has gone wrong with them, but more importantly, who sent them? A quick glance at two recent incidents will underscore the point I am making. One, how did it happen that the North represented by their elders, religious groups, the intelligentsia and youth associations got dragged into a shouting match with a South-South thug, Alhaji Asari Dokubo? How did otherwise titanic men such as Professor Ango Abdullahi, former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, find themselves in the gutter engaging in a fight with an Alhaji Dokubo? I thought Ango’s group, and him in particular, a leader of the Yar’Adua group, scholar and gentleman, were above this kind of fray. But what is even more appalling is that Ja ...

Public Interest Lawyers League (PILL) has demanded the prosecution of the Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State for the killing of three students at the institution by soldiers yesterday, and his suspension from office as a first step to pave way for an independent inquiry into the affairs of the university. Condemning the brutality with which the soldiers sought to put down the peaceful protest, PILL called on President Goodluck Jonathan, as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, to inaugurate a Panel of Inquiry into the incident. In a statement signed by its President, Abdul Mahmud, the lawyers group said that it is clear that the authorities of the university were responsible for the invitation to the armed soldiers. The first concern, the statement said, is that Nigeria university administrators have evidently learned no lessons from the sad killings of students at the University of Ibadan (1971), Ahmadu Bello University (1986), Yaba Tech (1991) and Tai Solarin University (2009), describing as “sho ...

529 ABU students use one toilet daily – Report Written by Boco Edet The average ratio of toilet to users in most public universities is 1:20, but Nigeria’s premier Northern University, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, breaks the record with an all time high of an average of 529 students using one toilet. Graphic details of how the university, now celebrating 50 years of existence, has fallen from grace to grass is contained in a report which took a comprehensive inventory of facilities and assessment of the general condition of 61 public universities. The Needs Assessment report put together by an 11-man committee headed by former Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) with former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as member, says the state of facilities and resources at ABU need “urgent attention.” These record holding toilets are located at the Asma’u Mustapha Hostel, initially meant to accommodate 312 students but now has 3,178 students re ...
