Vice chancellor, University of Lagos, Professor Rahamon Bello, has appealed to the President Goodluck Jonathan on the need to urgently intervene in the resolution of the over 10- month strike action embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) and Academic Staff Union of Colleges of Education of Nigeria (ASUCOEN). He made this plea delivering an address on Day two of 2013/2013 Unilag convocation ceremony held last Wednesday on the institution’s Akoka campus in Lagos. According to him, “in the interest of our students and to stem the falling standard of education and the increasing degenerating infrastructure facilities worsened by the insurgency of the Boko Haram, we ask that the Federal Government should consider the demands of our colleagues in the education sector and ensure that the polytechnics and colleges of education go back to their classrooms.” Empathising with the Federal Government on having to deal with the many atrocities of the Boko Haram insurgency, which he noted was ...
Professor Attahiru Muhammed Jega is a renowned acade-mician, a former President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano. He was a member of the Electoral Reforms Committee estab-lished by President Umaru Musa Yar’adua and was appointed chairman of the powerful Independent National Electoral Commis-sion (INEC) by President Goodluck Jonathan in June 2010 amidst high expectations that the new government was truly interested in finding new modalities for conducting free and fair elections. Professor Jega’s appointment also came on the heels of fraudulent elections organised by his predecessor, Professor Maurice Iwu, and the fraud was confirmed by no less than late President Umaru Yar’adua himself. Observing Attahiru Jega these days leaves one in doubt about whether the bitter lessons of the 2007 and 2011 elections have been learnt. A few of his actions and statements have actually raised eyebrows. The Anambra governorship election ...

The ESUT Vice Chancellor, Prof. Cyprian Onyeji, hailed the ASUU-ESUT new leadership and hoped that management would work with it to develop the university. Ajasin varsity workers’ protest political – VC Vice Chancellor of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Prof. Olufemi Mimiko, has alleged that Monday’s attack on the venue of his meeting with management staff by striking workers was politically-motivated. The VC, who spoke with reporters in Akure on Wednesday, alleged that the protest was planned by the workers in connivance with the leadership of a political party because representatives of media houses owned by one of the party chiefs were on ground to cover the incident. The protest was carried out by the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University, Non-Academic Staff Union and the National Association of Academic Technologists. Mimiko was prevented from leaving the premises for several hours before the State Security Services intervened. The workers, who were protesting against non-payment of arrears of hazard allowance as captured in the FGN-Unions agreement in 2009, also laid siege to the Vice-Chancellor’s Complex and rep ...
