My Rutland Herald Candidate Profile . . . . . Marc Brierre doesn’t consider himself a politician, nor does he seek out public attention. But what the top prosecutor said he does bring to the table in a rare race for the Rutland County state’s attorney post is decades of experience. Brierre, 63, began his prosecutorial career in Rutland in 1983 as a deputy state’s attorney — a position he retained until 2009 when he was appointed to lead the office after the retirement of his former boss and mentor, James Mongeon. He’s been challenged twice since assuming that post, winning handily each time. But in his latest race against Rose Kennedy, a former deputy in his office until he fired her in June, Brierre faces a challenger who has already gathered the support of Rutland’s mayor and the Vermont Troopers Association, which represents the rank and file of the Vermont State Police. It’s an office not as suited for appealing to voters as other elected officers, and the soft-spoken Brierre said he hol ...

Lt. Governor Phil Scott issued the following statement about Monday’s protest in the Pavilion Building and the State’s response: “On Monday afternoon and evening, as protesters marched on the Pavilion Building, I was involved with the Department of Public Safety’s temporary Command Center in downtown Montpelier. What I witnessed confirmed my faith in our law enforcement on many levels: Vermont State Police, Montpelier Police, Barre City Police, Capitol Police, Washington County Sheriffs, DMV Enforcement, Vermont Department of Liquor Control Inspectors and BGS Security all worked together to protect Vermonters and our infrastructure while simultaneously protecting and ensuring the First Amendment rights of those protesting. “The news reports clearly show some of the protesters were ultimately arrested without incident, but I know how quickly the outcome could have "gone south" without the collective level of expertise and experience of the officers involved. “I couldn't be more proud of how th ...

Child abuse hearings begin today MONTPELIER — The recent deaths of two toddlers have spurred several investigations into the state’s laws and policies and have sparked public outrage about how the Department for Children and Families has performed its duties. But the extent of the challenges faced in Vermont runs even deeper, said Essex County State’s Attorney Vincent Illuzzi, who said many abuse cases don’t involve DCF and the majority never make it to the public domain because “most of them are protected by the cloak of confidentiality.” The department has been heavily scrutinized and castigated by the public after the deaths of 2-year-old Dezirae Sheldon, of Poultney, in February, and 15-month-old Peighton Geraw, of Winooski, in April. Both children were involved with DCF when they died, and both had been returned to their homes after being in the department’s custody. A third child, 22-month-old Mason Keithan, died in St. Johnsbury on Saturday. Vermont State Police spokeswoman Stephanie ...
