Today in Ventura County Star and article about the success of the SEA Program: Ventura County Star - Oxnard 06/06/2014, Page B01 One-on-one learning ■ Sessions help students achieve more By Monica Lara Special to The Star Oxnard seventh-grader Vanessa Buenrostro received her end-of-year report card with a 5 in English and a 3 in math, based on a 5-point grading scale. The Ocean View Junior High student couldn’t help but smile because it was an improvement from her first-quarter grades of a 4 in English and 1 in math, which is failing. “When I found out, I was screaming, ‘This is cool!’” Vanessa said this week. “I was really happy. I kept saying, ‘I passed. I passed.’ ” Vanessa, 13, is one of several middle school students who saw similar improvements in their grades this year with the help of the Successful Education Achievement program, an after-school mentoring program for students struggling to improve their grades. BUENA HIGH STUDENTS, TEACHERS PUT FINISHING TOUCHES ON MEMORIAL GARDEN By Hannah Guzik | Special to The Star Photos by Juan Carlo | Ventura County Star Just a few hours before she died, fellow teachers told Amy Reinert that they would dedicate a garden in her honor. On June 9, that final promise will come true. Reinert was a beloved Buena High School Spanish teacher who passed away in February 2012, just four months after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of cervical cancer. The 36-year-old, who had previously taught science at the Ventura school, loved gardening for all that it represented — healthy food, a chance to be outdoors, a way to connect with the community. So on Reinert’s deathbed, as her family and friends tried to cope with their impending and sudden loss, the idea of a memorial garden came up. World history teacher Cheryl Wheeler leaned over her good friend and told her about the garden that was to be. Reinert — who passed away early the next morning — struggled to speak, but t ...

STEPSONS TAKE FLYING LESSONS TO HONOR FATHER KILLED IN Santa Paula HELICOPTER CRASH By Cindy Von Quednow | Ventura County Star The stepsons of a 42-year-old man who died in a Santa Paula helicopter crash Friday are planning to take helicopter lessons as a tribute to him. Wes Myers said Tuesday that his stepfather, Philip Isaac Margolis III, was an experienced pilot who could “fly pretty much everything.” “He was a great pilot and a great man,” Myers said. “This is just a tragic mistake.” The fatal crash occurred about 10:15 a.m. Friday near the Santa Paula Airport. The helicopter clipped some power lines in the 900 block of Corporation Street before crashing nearby in the Santa Clara River bottom, according to the Ventura County Fire Department. The fallen lines started a fire in some bamboo but burned less than an acre. Margolis had rented the helicopter about 9 a.m. Friday from a business at the Oxnard Airport. He was expected to return about 10 a.m. The National Transportation Safety Board ...
RIO BOARD TO PICK DEVELOPER FOR OLD SCHOOL SITE By Wendy Leung | Ventura County Star The Rio School District board is expected to decide Wednesday whether to sell a former school site and possibly pick one of two bidders interested in the property. El Rio School, which opened in 1949 and closed in 2007, is currently used as office space for district maintenance staff and parking space for buses. “The district has determined it’s not necessary for student growth,” said Superintendent John Puglisi. “It was declared a surplus property.” Last week, the district received bids from two developers interested in converting the site, at 2714 E. Vineyard Ave., to a mixed-use development with residential and retail space. Pacific West Communities placed a bid for $7.97 million and Aldersgate Investment placed a bid for $8.12 million. Both bids are for a 24-month escrow process. Aldersgate placed a separate, $5 million bid for a six-month escrow process. Assistant Superintendent Kristen Pifko said depending ...

Ventura County Star - Printer-friendly story Simi Valley solemnly welcomes mobile Vietnam memorial wall By Michele Willer-Allred Originally published 12:20 p.m., May 22, 2014 Updated 10:44 p.m., May 22, 2014 For many who visited the mobile Vietnam memorial wall in Simi Valley, it was a chance to “welcome home” heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice during the war. “I’m still dying inside. I still miss him terribly,” said Simi Valley resident Pauline Binns, 88, who lost her son David Binns in the Vietnam War. David Binns was a 20-year-old Marine from Reseda killed by an artillery shell three weeks after he went to Vietnam. His name was one of the more than 58,000 of those killed or missing in action listed on the Mobile Vietnam Memorial Wall for the Antelope Valley, which will be displayed until 8 a.m. Wednesday morning at the Rancho Tapo Community Park Veterans Plaza, 3700 Avenida Simi.
