Vaclav Havel – Living in Freedom, a new documentary by Czech-born French film director Andrea Sedlackova.
Democracy may be a word familiar to most, but it is a concept still misunderstood and misused in a time when totalitarian regimes and military dictatorships alike have attempted to claim popular support by pinning democratic labels upon themselves. Yet the power of the democratic idea has also evoked some of history's most profound and moving expressions of human will and intellect: from Pericles in ancient Athens to Vaclav Havel in the modern Czech Republic, from Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of Independence in 1776 to Andrei Sakharov's last speeches in 1989. In the dictionary definition, democracy "is government by the people in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system." In the phrase of Abraham Lincoln, democracy is a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people." Freedom and democracy are often used interchangeably, but the two are not synonymous. Democracy is indeed a set of ideas and princ ...

Reaction to President address to Congress by Hanna Hopko: "A very powerful speech by the President of Ukraine! The audience interrupted the speech 10 times with standing ovations!! According to Americans, the address is very well delivered and received! The messages are clear! Yesterday, a lot of supporters here were still worried that the address will be too soft! What's important now are the actions, as there's not particularly much to report on for the first 100 days [in office]! Old personnel are returning, preservation of arbitrariness in courts is continuing, elections are being held under the old rules! Until now, Yushchenko was the only Ukrainian president to address a joint session of the House and the Senate! This is an historical moment!! In the past, Vaclav Havel, Winston Churchill, and Nelson Mandela spoke in this Chamber."
Today in History - July 20 1801 - A 1,235 pound cheese ball was pressed at the farm of Elisha Brown, Jr. The ball of cheese was later loaded on a horse-driven wagon and presented to U.S. President Thomas Jefferson at the White House. 1810 - Colombia declared independence from Spain. 1859 - Brooklyn and New York played baseball at Fashion Park Race Course on Long Island, NY. The game marked the first time that admission had been charged for to see a ball game. It cost $.50 to get in and the players on the field did not receive a salary (until 1863). 1861 - The Congress of the Confederate States began holding sessions in Richmond, VA. 1868 - Legislation that ordered U.S. tax stamps to be placed on all cigarette packs was passed. 1871 - British Columbia joined Confederation as a Canadian province. 1881 - Sioux Indian leader Sitting Bull, a fugitive since the Battle of the Little Big Horn, surrendered to federal troops. “I wish our politicians had to pass an exam to show they were cultured.” Vivienne Westwood. Yes,indeed, that would be a novelty. But,fat chance of that ever happening or very rarely. One example--Vaclav Havel, but now?In any case, speaking just of the thinking in appointing politicians to government departments..As long as culture, sport and tourism .for instance, are all lumped together in the one department here in Ireland.,a broad spectrum which noone really can handle all at once properly,I see no real progress possible with any of those .Michael D Higgins, our dignified president is doing his best but his view on culture is relatively narrowly defined. He is cultured, however and that is wonderful and makes him a stand-out in our present line-up.

Today is the birthday of Irish avant-garde playwwright and poet, Samuel Barclay Beckett. Known for penning tragicomic works like "Waiting for Godot" and "Endgame," the renown writer would turn 107 years old if he were still alive today. Widely recognized as one of the most influential authors of the 20th century, the Dublin-born Beckett was famous for his bleak portrayals of humanity. Channeling compatriot James Joyce, his stories were often filled with black comedy and gallows humor and represented an open attack on the then-popular realist tradition. Throwing conventional plot lines and restricted time sequences to the wind, his experimental writing style paved the way for writers like Vaclav Havel, Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter.

I don’t like cheesy, vague advice. I like specifics that really challenge my thinking about a situation. Often, just changing the prism you look through can offer the perspective you needed all along. Words can be that prism. Growing a business often entails a series of small actions, such as growing your social media communities or cold calling. However, it’s meaningless without a vision behind it and the directions to accomplish it. You must simultaneously consider the pieces and the whole, like a jigsaw. Week four ending in Ecuador. I'm getting accustomed to being here, I guess. My admiration for the people of Ecuador keeps getting higher as I watch normal behavior and common sense among people that would be impossible in the US. For instance, crossing the street is a case-by-case negotiation in the city. More like bull fighting than strolling. Most of the cars use the stop lights, but none of the pedestrians do. That would be too easy. Here people take personal responsibility for the act of crossing the street with decisions based on realtime data, perceived trajectories and astute nimbleness. No one resorts to calling lawyers. My language is improving, getting to the point that I am reading some literature by local writers with a dictionary close at hand. Again I am impressed by the strong interplay of literature, poetry and politics. Yesterday I got a book, collection of short stories, by Raul Vallejo. The flyleaf describes his collection of national prizes and his 2011 appointment as ambassador to Co ...
We are living at a time when humankind can face whatever threatens it only if we, by which i mean each of us, manage to revive, with new energy and a new ethos, a sense of responsibility for the rest of the world. (By: Vaclav Havel)

'I really do inhabit a system in which words are capable of shaking the entire structure of government, where words can prove mightier than ten military divisions' - Vaclav Havel
Good Morning Gang, It’s 40 degrees outside of the Center for the Reduction of Mopery (thanks Chris!). We will hover around this temperature most of the day. We had rain overnight, which is leading to standing water and flooding. Be careful on the roads this morning. Winds will gust in the 40-50 mph range today, so hold on to small children and pets. As usual, husbands are on their own. We have no delays, incidents or chicanery to report as of this moment. There are 211 days until the Brimfest Crazy Cousins Reunion and Veterans Welcome Home Parade. Thank-you to Cousin Melissa for correcting our countdown. Somewhere along the way, we forgot to subtract some days. We immediately sent our abacus out for testing. You are only as reliable as your abacus. Today is NOT my birthday. Thanks for the singing telegram and the lady popping out of the cake this morning. If today is your birthday, we wish you a great day. We hope you get ice cream cake and a Tyco Slot Racing Electric Race Track. We used to b ...

Sergeyevitch Gorbachev. In 1988 I was arrested in Prague for attending a meeting of one of Vaclav Havel's 'Charter 77' committees. (8/20)
This Day in History: Today is Friday, Feb. 21, the 52nd day of 2014. There are 313 days left in the year. It was 25 years ago today -- On Feb. 21, 1989, the future president of Czechoslovakia, playwright Vaclav Havel (VATS'-lahv HAH'-vel), was convicted for his role in a banned rally and sentenced to nine months in jail (he was released in May 1989).

I just noticed that "someone from the Romanian banking industry" viewed my Linkedin profile. I assure you, I am not hiding my stash of Vaclav Havel bobbleheads in a vault in Bucharest.
Politics seems to be a hard job when it comes to acting from wording ... Hard to be seen when there is just people, their faith a lives on the topic. Wish we had Vaclav Havel around these days to strengthen the faith to people fighting for freedom of their country, just because it is the right thing to do, without any business, fame or prosperity benefits outlook in return.
Recently I spent more time at Vaclav Havel international airport than at home
