A Third of Americans delinquent on Debt : Hadley Malcolm, USA TODAY More than a third of the country is in trouble when it comes to paying debts on time; 35% of Americans have debt in collections, according to a study out Tuesday from the Urban Institute, which analyzed the credit files of 7 million Americans. That means the debt is so far past due that the account has been closed and placed in collections. This typically happens after the bill hasn't been paid for 180 days. It also means the debt has been reported to credit bureaus and can affect someone's credit score. Southern states especially stand out with the highest concentration of people delinquent. In 13 states — Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico and West Virginia — and Washington, D.C., more than 40% of the population with a credit file has debt in collections. Nevada, one of the states hardest hit by the housing crisis and recession, has the hig ...
Maybe if Obama could have a third term, we could have real equality. All Americans can be in debt and facing debt collectors. Study: 35 percent in US facing debt collectors By JOSH BOAK AP Economics Writer AP Photo AP Photo/Richard Drew US Video Buy AP Photo Reprints WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than 35 percent of Americans have debts and unpaid bills that have been reported to collection agencies, according to a study released Tuesday by the Urban Institute. These consumers fall behind on credit cards or hospital bills. Their mortgages, auto loans or student debt pile up, unpaid. Even past-due gym membership fees or cellphone contracts can end up with a collection agency, potentially hurting credit scores and job prospects, said Caroline Ratcliffe, a Senior Fellow at the Washington-based think tank. "Roughly, every third person you pass on the street is going to have debt in collections," Ratcliffe said. "It can tip employers' hiring decisions, or whether or not you get that apartment." The study found that 3 ...
From the L.A. Times: President Obama's healthcare law has reduced the number of uninsured adults by 8 million to 11 million in its first year, according to three new studies, and the vast majority report satisfaction with their new health plans. The studies — done separately by the Commonwealth Fund, the Urban Institute and the Gallup organization — use different methods to estimate the effect that the Affordable Care Act has had. Each comes to a similar conclusion: Nationwide, roughly 1 in 4 people who were uninsured last fall now have received coverage, representing a significant first step toward Obamacare's goal of near-universal coverage.

FHA Program Aims to Expand Credit; Lower Risk Posted By Colin Robins On May 13, 2014 @ 2:41 pm In Daily Dose,Government,Headlines,News | No Comments The Federal Housing Administration [1] (FHA) issued its "Blueprint for Access [2]," which aims to expand credit access for underserved borrowers by utilizing housing counseling as a means to reduce the possibility of loans becoming seriously delinquent. The announcement highlights a new pilot program, Homeowners Armed with Knowledge (HAWK), which incorporates housing counseling into the home buying process for borrowers using FHA-insured financing. The agency cited a study from the Urban Institute [3] that notes that the average loan from Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae has a borrower's credit score of 752, leaving 13 million borrowers with credit scores between 580-680 at a significant disadvantage when attempting to secure loans. Under the new pilot, homebuyers will qualify for savings on their FHA-insured loans by completing housing counseling through independe ...
(WALL STREET JOURNAL) - "Obamacare Question: Ditch Employer Mandate? " A left-leaning think tank whose research is often taken seriously by backers of the health-care overhaul has published a paper suggesting the administration should scrap the health law’s requirement that employers offer coverage or pay a penalty. “Why Don’t We Just Get Rid of the Employer Mandate?”, by three researchers at the Urban Institute, argues that the requirement won’t lead to many more people gaining coverage, since most firms that don’t currently offer benefits to all their workers will opt for the penalty, and most firms that already voluntarily offer benefits will want to carry on doing so.

Urban Land Institute is coming to town: How to join in
Read this interesting article: The New York Times "Deporting Parents Hurts Kids" By HIROKAZU YOSHIKAWA and CAROLA SUÁREZ-OROZCO April 20, 2012 LAST May, President Obama told an audience in El Paso that deportation of immigrants would focus on “violent offenders and people convicted of crimes; not families, not folks who are just looking to scrape together an income.” Two weeks ago, however, the Department of Homeland Security released a report that flatly belies the new policy. From January to June 2011, Immigration and Customs Enforcement removed 46,486 undocumented parents who claimed to have at least one child who is an American citizen. In contrast, in the entire decade between 1998 and 2007, about 100,000 such parents were removed. The extraordinary acceleration in the dismantling of these families, part of the government’s efforts to meet an annual quota of about 400,000 deportations, has had devastating results. Research by the Urban Institute and others reveals the deep and irreversible har ...

New research from Urban Institute: Most pimps women; Prostitution in decline in US.
*Here is the Million Dollar Question, Seeing that the Justice Department funded researchers on the exhaustive study in eight large U.S. metropolitan areas on the commercial sex economy/prostitution economy which deals with pimps and the research found the reach of the internet has facilitated the sex trade and made it harder to combat me commercial sex/prostitution business. Now people be mindful, this study comes from the justice department funding to the Urban Institute. Our question from JBH.Org is; What if a Bill was drafted to introduce to states regarding "Licensed Prostitution" and some provisions of the bill would include; State Registry; State Tax; Monthly Testing; and Monthly Renewal Of Registration. This way, It's regulated, controlled, and y'all feel about such a Bill?
Single Payer . "Yes, we still need a Medicare for all option for health care in this country. A Los Angeles Times story spells out what happens when you have competing market interests intersecting, both hoping to maximize profits. In this case, hospitals and insurance companies. The difference in price can be stunning. Los Alamitos Medical Center, for instance, lists a CT scan of the abdomen on a state website for $4,423. Blue Shield says its negotiated rate at the hospital is about $2,400. When The Times called for a cash price, the hospital said it was $250. "It frustrates people because there's no correlation between what things cost and what is charged," said Paul Keckley, executive director of the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions,a research arm of the accounting firm. "It changes the game when healthcare's secrets aren't so secret."[...] In the view of Robert Berenson, a Senior Fellow at the Urban Institute and vice chairman of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, big hospitals are exerting ...

MASSIVE IRS RED FLAG: All non-profits must file an IRS form 990-N. To do this, the IRS sends you to the website of the Urban Institute, which purports to be a "nonpartisan policy research" organization, but clearly backs the liberal agenda. This is a dangerous conflict of interest and the reason why non-liberal nonprofits are being harassed by the IRS.
Good Morning! Happy Hump Day. No texting. No guns. Two "rules" posted in the Florida movie theater where a man drew a gun and allegedly killed a man for texting. Seems Americans are killing at a record pace over...nothing. Maybe this is how we settle our arguments now. Pull a gun. End the argument. We'll be talking a lot about this story. Some psychologists say there's something about being "trapped" in a movie theater and anger over cell phone use that ignites the worst in us. It's kinda like road rage. Yeah, I know...excuses, excuses. Perhaps it's a better defense than 'he attacked me with popcorn...or something...' The Senate is in a "cooling off period." A self-imposed "time-out." No, they're not sitting in a corner! They "went to their separate corners of the Capital" so they can ponder why they can't seem to extend unemployment benefits. In the meantime, according to the Urban Institute, 2.3 million children live with a long-term unemployed parent. Most live in states where the housing and financial ...
Why Obamacare - i.e. a private market-based insurance system - is unsuited to its target demographic and we should have simply expanded Medicare. -- From Bloomberg Businessweek Many of the people who are supposed to get health coverage through the Affordable Care Act next year don’t understand basic elements of insurance such as deductibles, premiums, and co-insurance, a new poll from the Urban Institute suggests. That means the newly insured may be blindsided by how much they actually have to pay for a doctor’s visit or trip to the hospital. The survey asked more than 1,000 people who were either uninsured or had private health plans about how well they grasped nine terms that describe different attributes of health plans, including “co-payments,” “provider network,” and “covered services.” Researchers found that only 40 percent were “very or somewhat confident” that they knew what all the phrases meant. Who could blame them? Health insurance is full of jargon. The language can be opa ...
Myth No. 2: I'd be better off if I'd kept my Social Security taxes in my own investment account. Hmmm — you're saying that you'd faithfully put that money aside, every year of your working life, in a mix of stocks and bonds, without ever skipping a year, drawing on your nest egg or selling when the market dropped? Few such paragons exist. You'd need to invest far more than you probably realize to match the benefits Social Security pays. As an example, take a 65-year-old couple with a single breadwinner who earned the average wage. At retirement, they'd currently get about $2,170 a month, plus inflation adjustments, for life, the Urban Institute reports. To equal that sum in private savings, they'd need to have about $580,000, says Michael Kitces, director of research for Pinnacle Advisory Group, and the money might last only 30 years. How many average earners are likely to save that much?

Maximizing Enrollment Under the ACA: Lessons from the States Summary of Urban Institute Event via
The New York Times by Robert Pear - December 9, 2013: For months, the Obama administration has heralded the low premiums of medical insurance policies on sale in the insurance exchanges created by the new health law. But as consumers dig into the details, they are finding that the deductibles and other out-of-pocket costs are often much higher than what is typical in employer-sponsored health plans. Until now, it was almost impossible for people using the federal health care website to see the deductible amounts, which consumers pay before coverage kicks in. But federal officials finally relented last week and added a window shopping feature that displays data on deductibles. For policies offered in the federal exchange, as in many states, the annual deductible often tops $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for a couple. Insurers devised the new policies on the assumption that consumers would pick a plan based mainly on price, as reflected in the premium. But insurance plans with lower premiums generally ...

AP IMPACT: The world braces for retirement crisis Mikio Fukushima, who is 52 and lives in Tokyo, worries that he might need to move somewhere cheaper, maybe Malaysia, after age 70 to get by comfortably on income from his investments and a public pension of just $10,000 a year. People like Fukushima who are fretting over their retirement prospects stand in contrast to many who are already retired. Many workers were recipients of generous corporate pensions and government benefits that had yet to be cut. Jean-Pierre Bigand, 66, retired Sept. 1, in time to enjoy all the perks of a retirement system in France that's now in peril. Bigand lives in the countryside outside the city of Rouen in Normandy. He has a second home in Provence. He's just taken a vacation on Oleron Island off the Atlantic coast and is planning a five-week trip to Guadeloupe. "Travel is our biggest expense," he says. UNDER SIEGE The notion of extended, leisurely retirements is relatively new. Germany established the world's first widely av ...

On fundraising: just found this quote in the NY Times, dog charities must compete in the wider contest for dollars among nonprofit organizations. Mary Deeters ND A GOVERNMENT THAT REFUSED TO PROSECUTE AND INSTEAD ALLOWED 17 TRILLION DOLLARS TO BE GIVEN TO THEM THE WARNING SIGNS! As we’ve pointed out in earlier articles, scores of people knew what was going on during the subprime fiasco. But it’s worth a quick review, because Robert Rubin, Alan Greenspan, Timothy Geithner, and others have been defending themselves saying, “Who could have known?”. The FBI knew (“In September 2004, the FBI began publicly warning that there was an “epidemic” of mortgage fraud, and it predicted that it would produce an economic crisis, if it were not dealt with.”) The FDIC knew. ( In testimony before the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, FDIC chairman Sheila Bair confirmed that she not only warned the Fed of what was going on in 2001, but cited particular regulations (HOEPA) under which the Fed could stop the “unfair, abusive and deceptive practices” by the banks.) Also Fitch ratings knew, and even Alan Greenspan’s good friend and former Fed gov ...

Refusal to implement Medicaid Expansion-Equals Denying Health Insurance to Veterans The GOP’s refusal to fully implement the Affordable Care Act will leave more than half of the nation’s uninsured working poor without access to health insurance and will also disadvantage military veterans. While the health care law does not change the Veterans Health Administration or other military health care systems, the ACA does expand Medicaid to all uninsured Americans with incomes below 133 percent of the federal poverty line and could provide health care coverage to nearly half of all uninsured veterans. This population of approximately 1,314,000 veterans tends to “have served more recently, are younger, have lower levels of education, are less likely to be married, and are less connected to the labor force.” (According to a 2012 analysis from the Urban Institute, 48 percent of uninsured veterans are estimated to have incomes below the Medicaid eligibility threshold.) Half of veterans who are insured, but ...

The petition below was started by Brenda MacInnes, a CREDO activist in Inverness, Florida. Brenda started a petition on CREDO Mobilize, where activists can launch their own campaigns for progressive change. Will you help Brenda pressure Governor Scott and Republicans in the state legislature to stop blocking the expansion of Medicaid in Florida by signing the petition and sharing it with your friends and family? CREDO Mobilize Tell Florida Republicans: Stop playing politics with healthcare. Sign the petition ► Dear Jerry, On January 1, millions of Americans whose income is less than 133% of the poverty level will become eligible for Medicaid. But because Governor Scott and Republicans in the Florida legislature are playing politics with healthcare and refusing federal funding, Florida residents won't be eligible. This is a craven attempt to undermine President Obama's Affordable Care Act at the expense of Florida residents and we need to push back now. CREDO activist Brenda MacInnes started a campaign o ...
Researchers at the Urban Institute also found striking racial disparities in how Stand Your Ground laws played out once a defendant claims self-defense. In Stand Your Ground law states, twice as many homicides are justified than in non-stand your ground states, and when white shooters kill black victims, 34% of the homicides are deemed justifiable, but when the shooter is Black and the victim is white, only 3% of deaths are ruled justifiable. The proliferation of stand your ground laws is the gift of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and they may help Michael Dunn as a defense for killing another unarmed African American teenager.
NEW YORK – Oct. 1, 2013 – The recovery in the U.S. housing market could run out of steam if it depends on investors to carry it along, an economic report explains. In a report titled “Opening the Credit Box,” Moody’s Analytics economist Mark Zandi and Urban Institute market analyst Jim Parrott say rising home prices and interest rates will force the recovery to rely on first-time buyers, as investment buyers will begin to back away. But first time buyers are not yet in a position to keep the recovery strong, Zandi and Parrott claim. The Housing Wire reported Monday that the housing market’s recovery has produced some positive data. Zandi and Parrott report home prices are up 15 percent from two years ago and housing starts have doubled since their low point in the 2008-09 recession. However, the average credit score among first-time home buyers is near 750, about 50 points higher than it was 10 years ago, the report said. “Lenders have reassessed how much risk they are willing to take on, in ...
Via CNS News: Federal tax expert Gene Steuerle said at a discussion on low-wage workers on Tuesday at the Capitol that government social welfare programs penalize low-income people for being married. “Staying unmarried is the tax shelter for the poor,” Steuerle, a fellow at the Urban Institute and former deputy assistant secretary of the Treasury for tax analysis in the Ronald Reagan administration, said at an event to release a survey commissioned by Oxfam America on low-wage workers in the United States. The survey states that 33 million Americans earn less than $10 an hour. Respondents to the survey (done by telephone from July 2 to July 9, 2013 of 804 low-wage workers) said they believe it is more common for middle-class people to fall out of the middle class (76 percent) than for low-income people to rise to the middle class (12 percent). Steuerle’s remarks followed those of Tianna Gaines-Turner, a child care worker from Philadelphia who earns $10 an hour and is raising three children with her ...
