National governments and organizations like the United Nations are increasingly looking for ways to engage youths. As Kofi Annan said, "You don't have to be old to lead. This is your world, you are the leaders of the 21st century."

Followers of Other Faiths among Devotees of Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) (Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - Throughout history, there have been many from other faiths who have expressed their love for the Household of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). In the contemporary era, too, many prominent figures have stressed their devotion to the Infallible (AS). Preeminent leader of Indian nationalism Mahatma Gandhi was one of these figures. Gandhi, who was not a Shia or even a Muslim, regarded Imam Hussein (AS) as his role model in courage and bravery and said the uprising of Imam Hussein (AS) was a guide for him. Former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, also a non-Muslim, once praised Imam Ali (AS) and recommended that six of the Imam’s (AS) letters, especially his letter to Malik Ashtar, that explain the relation between the rulers and people, be circulated as a UN document. In 2002, the United Nations declared Imam Ali (AS) to be one of the most just rulers humanity has ever seen. The United Nations advised Arab countries to take Imam ...

Instead of Secretary of State, President Obama has now nominated her for the position of National Security Advisor which is a job that does not require Senate approval or confirmation. Trying to Feed a Billion People.- EACH day, a billion people do not eat enough to satisfy their hunger. Yet, this atrocious condition should not exist, according to the United Nations. “You have said that your first priority is the eradication of extreme poverty.” So spoke United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan on September 8, 2000, to an assembly of the world’s most powerful men and women. They had come together for the United Nations Millennium Summit, during which several of those leaders made frank comments on the problems of the world’s poor. “Extreme poverty is an affront to humanity,” said the vice president of Brazil. The Prime Minister of Great Britain went even further when he said: “There is a dismal record of failure in Africa on the part of the developed world that shocks and shames our civilization.” Those two speakers made plain that the nations had disgraced themselves by failing to do what they could to feed starving humans. As proof of their desire to improve living ...

"Neither Bush nor Tony Blair has provided any evidence that such weapons exist. But what we know is that Israel has weapons of mass destruction. Nobody talks about that. Why should there be one standard for one country, especially because it is black, and another one for another country, Israel, that is white. Many people say quietly, but they don't have the courage to stand up and say publicly, that when there were white Secretary Generals you didn't find this question of the United States and Britain going out of the United Nations. But now that you've had black Secretary Generals like Boutros Boutros Ghali, like Kofi Annan, they do not respect the United Nations. They have contempt for it. This is not my view, but that is what is being said by many people." Nelson Mandela

In 60 years, the United Nations, its specialized agencies and staff were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize ten times. One agency, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees received the famous prize twice. Two Secretaries-General, Kofi Annan and Dag Hammarskjold were honoured as well by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for their work. The latest awardee, Mohamed ElBaradei declared upon learning that he was the 2005 recipient of the prize “I think the prize would strengthen my resolve and that of my colleagues to continue to speak the truth to power, to continue to speak our minds. We have no hidden agenda except to ensure that our world continues to be safe and humane”. For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organized cooperation between states. The end of the cold war has at last made it possible for the U.N. to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organization is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in t ...

Women are powerful change makers and their leadership is critical in development of any society. With the unique set of skills and knowledge that they possess, women play a crucial role in tackling the world's most urgent issues. Recognizing this very fact, United Nations adopted the promotion of gender equity as one of the Millennium Development Goal (MDG 3). Kofi Annan, the Former Secretary General of United Nations has also indicated that "Gender equality is more than a goal in itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building Good Governance." It is evident that empowering women would ultimately lead to economic growth and sustainability of the society. Women form almost half the global population and account for 60% of the workforce, but still have no or little say in decision making and own only 1% of the world's real estate (ILO). Women face political, economic and social, discrimination indicating prevalence of gender biasnes ...
In an address to the 54th session of the UN General Assembly in September 1999, Secretary-General Kofi Annan reflected upon “the prospects for human security and intervention in the next century.” He recalled the failures of the Security Council to act in Rwanda and Kosovo, and challenged the Member States of the UN to “find common ground in upholding the principles of the Charter, and acting in defence of our common humanity.” The Secretary-General warned that “If the collective conscience of humanity … cannot find in the United Nations its greatest tribune, there is a grave danger that it will look elsewhere for peace and for justice.” In his Millennium Report to the General Assembly a year later, he restated the dilemma, and repeated the challenge: … if humanitarian intervention is, indeed, an unacceptable assault on sovereignty, how should we respond to a Rwanda, to a Srebrenica – to gross and systematic violations of Human Rights that offend every precept of our common humanity? BET 100 BUCKS YOU DID NOT KNOW THESE FUN FACTS ABOUT UN SECRETARY The head of the United Nations is the Secretary-General. They are appointed based on geographical rotation, but never from the five permanent Security Council Member States. The current Secretary-General is Ban Ki-moon from South Korea. He has been described by many as "bland" (indeed, his nickname is Ban-chusa, or "the bureaucrat" in Korean). When he was elected Secretary-General, however, Ban surprised everyone by singing a version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" with the lyrics "Ban Ki-moon is coming to town" instead). Another interesting facts about past UN Secretary-Generals: - Kofi Annan is a twin, a particularly respected thing in Ghanaian culture. The Akan people of Ghana often name their children after the day of the week they were born. His name, Kofi, is given to boys born on a Friday. - Let's face it: Boutros Boutros-Ghali has a funny name. Indeed, an Icelandic soccer team has been named after him! "Boutros Boutros" once said ...

After studying the lives of the most prominent individuals throughout history I have recognized a unique pattern; that everybody who influences the world does it through three major ways- 1. Gift- talent/ spiritual gifts E.g. Usain Bolt, Archimedes, Michael Jackson, Benny Hinn, Ben Carson etc 2. Ideas- inventions, innovations, philosophies, movements E.g Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Benners-Lee, Karl Max, Charles Darwin, Aristotle, Martin Luther King etc 3. Institutions- leadership, governance, business, religion. Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank, Kofi Annan and United Nations, Kwame Nkrumah and Ghana, Bill Gates and Microsoft. The big question is; how do you intend to influence the world? What will be the vehicle through which you will impact the world? Find it now! Culled from my message ''THE QUESTION OF LEGACY: what will you be remembered for?''

Tharoor and Modi are among few persons who know their work in perfection. I have been reading Tharoor for the last 10-12 years. But as he entered politics and delved himself into IPL controversy his expertise was ruined. Modi is also an excellent administrator. I think we all have a sense today of having come to a turning point in history. The forces of envy, despair and terror in todays world are stronger than many of us realized. But they are not invincible. Against them we must bring a message of solidarity, of mutual respect and, above all, of hope. Bussiness cannot afford to be seen as the problem. It must, working with government, and with all other actors in society, be part of the solution. Mr Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations, World Economic Forum, February 2002

London - Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was the only person capable of turning George W Bush against the 2003 Iraq invasion, ex-United Nations chief Kofi Annan claimed in an interview published on Saturday. Annan argued in an interview published in the Times newspaper that Blair could have changed Bush's mind because of the special relationship between the two nations and the two leaders. Annan said he often had contemplated what might have happened if "Blair had said 'George, this is where we part company. You're on your own'," following the failure to secure a second UN resolution. "I really think it could have stopped the war," added the Nobel peace laureate. Annan was UN Secretary General at the time of the crisis. India would have liked Annan to "persevere", but if he is giving up, the International Community mustn't consider that as the end of the road, as some people seem to be suggesting. "The International Community, anchored in the United Nations, cannot however, walk away from its obligations towards Syria," said Hardeep Singh Puri, India's Permanent Representative to UN. "We will need to work out arrangements that can be put in place post-August 20, 2012, when the mandate of the UN mission to Syria concludes," he added. As a temporary member of the Security Council, India has been for an inclusive political solution, arguing against outside intervention. India supported Annan's mission and his six-point plan. But it is loathe to support any attempt by outside forces to take sides in th ...

That should be no surprise. For the past 16 months, NATO and its regional proxies have been steadily increasing the violence and turmoil inside and outside Syria, while the Western corporate-controlled media maintain the ridiculous fiction that the bloody chaos is largely due to the government forces of President Bashar Al Assad cracking down on “peaceful protesters”. Ironically, the crisis is culminating at the same time that the United Nations convenes an emergency summit on Syria in Geneva this weekend. The meeting, which is ostensibly aimed at “reviving the Kofi Annan peace plan”, will be attended by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and other “invited” regional states.
