UN accuses S. Sudan rebels over human rights violations December 19, 2014 (JUBA) – South Sudanese opposition forces killed at least 11 civilians and rape others in what amounted to war crimes, the United Nations mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said in a new report. South Sudanese rebels pictured in Jonglei state on 31 January 2014 (Photo: Reuters/Goran Tomasevic) “This report is a timely reminder of the fighting that has continued in Unity, Upper Nile and Jonglei states in spite of the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement that both warring parties signed nearly a year ago,” said Ellen Margrethe Loej, the head of UNMISS in a report extended to Sudan Tribune on Friday. Released by the UN human rights division, the report details several abuses allegedly committed by opposition forced in Bentiu, Unity state last October. UNMISS human rights officers reportedly received testimonies from multiple sources alleging opposition forces abducted and raped female residents after government troops withdrew from so ...

UN Human Rights Committee Finds US in Violation on 25 Counts Article by Adam Hudson published April 4, 2014 While President Obama told the country to "look forward, not backward" when it came to Bush's torture program, the United Nations has taken a different route. Recently, the UN Human Rights Committee issued a report excoriating the United States for its human rights violations. It focuses on violations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the country is party. The report mentions 25 human rights issues where the United States is failing. This piece will focus on a few of those issues - Guantanamo, NSA surveillance, accountability for Bush-era human rights violations, drone strikes, racism in the prison system, racial profiling, police violence, and criminalization of the homeless. Accountability for Bush-Era Crimes; Torture The UN committee expressed concerned with "the limited number of investigations, prosecutions and convictions of members of the Armed Forces and o ...

Rare Interview with Lebanese philosopher, chairman of the UN. committee of Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Lebanese Ambassador to the United States and the United Nations Dr. Charles Habib Malik on October 16, 1953 on the CBS Longines Chronoscope Television Program. Dr. Malik's interview still resonates today more than ever where he describes Lebanon as unique in the Near East with its mix of cultures and freedoms. He discusses Morocco, relations with the communist world, the United Nations, and world tensions. Malik says that Arab nations demand justice, respect, and self-determination. Transcript of the segment in the interview: "...I don't know wether really it is as big as New Hampshire but it's a very small country, and as to its population, it's not quite two million yet, maybe near a million and a half but it is a small country both in size and population. Yet its importance in the Near East and I dare say in the world at large cannot be measured by either its size or its population for . ...

Celebrating Eleanor Roosevelt and all she did for us! Eleanor Roosevelt (October 11, 1884- November 7, 1962) remains one of the greatest people in American history. Born to privilege, she married her distant cousin Franklin D. Roosevelt, was therefore the longest serving first lady, and she dedicated her life to human rights. Roosevelt was a person of many firsts, but her many accomplishments cannot be classified as “the first woman who…” for she surpassed all in her achievements. Most notable is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, crafted through an international collaboration, which she led. It was adopted by the UN in 1948 and is the guiding light for our thinking about human rights. Ms. Roosevelt’s birthday coincides with National Coming Out Day, a celebration of awareness for those who publicly identify as a gender or sexual minority. The day is observed by members of the LGBTQ+ community and their friends and loved ones. Ms. Roosevelt believed in freedom and equality, and it is a f .. ...

As of JUNE the United Nations announced that “at least 1075 people have been killed in Iraq, since ISIS militants started their march to capture towns and cities. It was reported that at least 757 civilians were killed and 599 injured in Nineveh, Diyala and Saladin provinces between 5 – 22 June.” . An overview of the incidences this past week… . August 10th . A major security concern has arisen as the IS has taken control of the Mosul Dam. The dam is one of the largest in Iraq and provides the IS with control over a majority of the water supply to the region. Additionally, so much water is held back by the dam, that if the IS opted to destroy it, it would put Mosul and the surrounding area under several feet of water and could even reach Baghdad. . The spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Human Rights has stated that the IS are detaining about 500 Christian and Yezidi women under the age of 35 in schools around Mosul. The women are facing regular human rights violations and abuse. They are repo ...
Human rights laws Because people believe that human rights are important, countries make laws to protect them. These laws say that governments cannot take away people's basic rights. They make sure people who take away other people's rights are punished. Some major political organizations have made statements that promote human rights. These are not laws, but they affect us anyway. If groups or countries do not follow these statements, others will condemn them (say that they are very bad); and then people may not talk with them, do business with them, or help them. Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen approved by the National Assembly of France, August 26, 1789 Some of the important places that human rights laws are written is in constitutions. The United States Constitution and Constitution of France are two of the oldest set of laws based on human rights. In 1948 the United Nations made the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This is a widely respected document that says what the Unite ...

EXCLUSIVE Who is responsible for brutality in Iraq? Almost 2,500 people were killed in Iraq in June as militants led by the radical group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, known as ISIS or ISIL, seized northern and western parts of the country, the United Nations said on Tuesday. What radicals have unleashed is reminiscent of the darkest days of sectarian violence in the region. Shockingly, ISIS is not the only ones responsible for atrocities in the country. The government plays its part, warns Erin Evers, Iraq researcher at the Middle East and North Africa Division of the Human Rights Watch. Read more:

Former vice presidential candidate, congresswoman and US Ambassador to the United Nations Geraldine Ferraro died Saturday at age 75 of complications from blood cancer. Ferraro, of New York City, had roots in the Hudson Valley as she was born and spent her first eight years in Newburgh on August 26, 1935. She served as a congresswoman from 1979-1985, ran for vice president along with presidential candidate Walter Mondale in 1984 and served from 1993-1996 as US Ambassador to the United Nations for Human Rights under President Bill Clinton. Ferraro would visit Orange County periodically during and after her political career and always tout the fact that she was local, having been born in Newburgh. She was “one of my earliest inspirations, and an inspiration for all women in politics,” said State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins of Westchester County. This has been written by my husband. Wanted to share it with you here: This is to Air Mauritius, Chief Executive. Dear Mr Viljoen, I understand that Air Mauritius has been requested to be a party to the deportation of a girl by the name of Yashika back to Mauritius from the UK. This is due to happen later today. 5pm Sunday 30th March, 2014. This action is clearly not in the best interest of the girl as she will be at considerable risk on her arrival back to Mauritius, and there is a question of whether or not the British government is working within the Human Rights framework of the European Union and the United Nations. Air Mauritius enjoys a very good reputation within the international traveling community. I am concerned about any damage that may occur to the commercial interests of this airline should it be involved in the deportation of this innocent girl. I for one would not feel able to use, support or recommend any company involved in such a terrible action. Yours Sincerely,

FG to UN: No going back on same-sex marriage ABUJA—The Federal Government, Thursday, told the United Nations that no amount of pressure would force it to reverse the law that criminalised same-sex marriage in Nigeria, insisting that such sexual orientation was “contrary to our cultural beliefs and will not be tolerated.” Addressing a delegation of the UN, led by its High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Mr. Mohammed Adoke, SAN, maintained that if President Goodluck Jonathan had not okayed the anti *** bill, Nigerians would have taken laws into their hands by lynching suspected homosexuals and *** in the country. He said: “I wish to re-emphasise that our laws do not criminalise individual sexual orientation. The focus of the Act is, therefore, discouragement of same-sex marriage which is a reflection of the overwhelming beliefs and cultural values of the Nigerians people as demonstrated by a 2013 opinion poll which show ...

United Nations on Imam Ali Ibn AbuTalib UN Secretariat , the Committee of Human Rights in New York under the chairmanship of the Secretary General Kofi Annan issued , in 2002 A.D. , this historic resolution : " The Caliph Ali Bin Abi Talib is considered the fairest governor who appeared during human history (After the Prophet Muhammed)" UN Declaration was based on documents of 160 pages in English . For this reason, the World Organization for Human Rights called the rulers of the world to follow the example of his sound and humanitarian method in ruling which revealed the spirit of social justice and peace . It was mentioned that the famous American writer Michael Hamilton was acquainted with the administrative instructions that the Caliph Imam Ali gave to Malik Al Ashtar when he appointed him ruler for Egypt in 656 A.D. , urging him to treat people, who were not Muslims, with charity and beneficence confirming the necessity of equality among the Jews and Christians with Muslims in rights and tasks, he sh ...
Recently the the United Nations' Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights issued a report on the DPRK, with a good portion of its information coming from one man. This man is 48 year old Kim Kwang-Il, a defector who spent 3 years in a North Korean Gulag for merely trying to smuggle food to the starved and malnourished. In an interview, he detailed public disposal of those who starved to death, torture which bore striking resemblance to the methods used in the Third Reich, and having to eat live insects and rodents to survive. Actions like NK 24 Lock-In bring hope to those oppressed by the regime and while I'm not a member of IBC, I find it extremely inspiring to see events like this and I'm truly thankful for it.

Columnist Dennis Prager: "[I]f what bothers you most is evil -- the deliberate infliction of cruelty on people by people -- North Korea, Congo, China, Syria and radical Islam will bother you more than anything else on the world scene. So, then, what was the subject of the meeting convened Friday by the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights? The alleged racism of the name of the National Football League's Washington team, the Redskins. That's right. All these horrific evils are happening as you read this, and the second-ranking official in charge of human rights at the United Nations had a meeting about the name Washington Redskins. ... This left-wing obsession with a non-evil exemplifies the left's moral universe. That universe is preoccupied with lesser evils while nearly always ignoring the greatest evils."

Violence continued to plague the Central African capital of Bangui Monday, despite last week’s inauguration of President Catherine Samba-Panza, forcing scores of civilians to flee across the Oubangui River to the Democratic Republic of Congo. While witnesses said heavy fire had been exchanged at the Camp Kasai military camp where former Seleka rebels had been stationed, the United Nations warned the security situation in the troubled nation was deteriorating even further. UN Human Rights chief Navi Pillay on Monday called upon the international community to strengthen peacekeeping efforts. “Many lives are at stake," she said, adding that "Muslim civilians are now extremely vulnerable. “ Since the country's first Muslim leader Michel Djotodia resigned earlier this month, there have been widespread reports of reprisal attacks on Muslim civilians, and the violence is escalating. Education Education encompasses both the teaching and learning of knowledge, proper conduct, and technical competency. It thus focuses on the cultivation of skills, trades or professions, as well as mental, moral & aesthetic development. Formal education consists of systematic instruction, teaching and training by professional teachers. This consists of the application of pedagogy and the development of curricula. The right to education is a fundamental human right. Since 1952, Article 2 of the first Protocol to the European Convention on Human Rights obliges all signatory parties to guarantee the right to education. At world level, the United Nations' International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights of 1966 guarantees this right under its Article 13. Educational systems are established to provide education and training, often for children and the young. A curriculum defines what students should know, understand and be able to do as the result of education. A teaching profession delivers tea ...

Introduction The scale of the Holocaust showed the world just how horrific state sponsored crimes against humanity could become if left unchecked. Following Hitler’s downfall, the victorious allies helped create the United Nations, a multinational governing body whose focus was to ensure that the world would never repeat the mistakes and catastrophes of the previous half-century. They introduced a raft of new International Humanitarian Laws and ideals such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which laid the fra ...

International Law From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search Further information: International Criminal law Created in 1945, the United Nations is responsible for much of the current framework of International Law International Law is the set of rules generally regarded and accepted as binding in relations between states and nations.[1][2] It serves as a framework for the practice of stable and organized international relations.[3] International Law differs from national legal systems in that it primarily concerns nations rather than private citizens. National law may become International Law when treaties delegate national jurisdiction to supranational tribunals such as the European Court of Human Rights or the International Criminal Court. Treaties such as the Geneva Conventions may require national law to conform. International Law is consent-based governance. This means that a state member of the international community is not obliged to abide by International Law unless it has ...

She has been in the region since Sunday, 16 June, and will next head to Kosovo before wrapping up her visit on Thursday. Human Rights: LONDON: Worldwide revulsion against Saturday’s massacre of 14 female students in Quetta has been led by Malala Yousafzai, who is the first to sign a new global petition launched today calling for urgent action to ensure the right of every girl to go to school. We now know the terrifying and horrific details of how 14 girls were blown up after they boarded a student bus on their college campus - and how in a shocking descent into barbarism, suicide bombers followed the injured to the hospital which they then peppered with bullets and grenades, taking the injured, their relatives and medical staff hostage before blowing themselves up. But Pakistan needs to know that the petition is only the first response of world opinion in solidarity with the Pakistani people, their new Prime Minister and particularly with the girls who were murdered. When the petition is presented to the Secretary General of the United Nations on Malala Day, July 12, the names of Abida Malik, Riyana Aurangzaib, Sunam, Noo ...
What are Human Rights? The 1993 World Conference on Human Rights affirmed the crucial connection between international peace and security and the rule of law and human rights, placing them all within the larger context of democratization and development. The United Nations is increasingly combining efforts to prevent or end conflicts with measures aimed at reducing human rights abuses in situations of internal violence. Special emphasis is placed on ensuring the protection of minorities, strengthening democratic institutions, realizing the right to development and securing universal respect for human rights. -- United Nations, "Human Rights Today: A United Nations Priority." Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are considered entitled: the right to life, liberty, freedom of thought and expression, and equal treatment before the law, among others. These rights represent entitlements of the individual or groups vis-B-vis the government, as well as responsibilities of the indivi ...
Learning the Wrong Lessons of Development (1) The Soludo Solution One of the asymmetries of globalisation is that whereas productive assets (highly skilled labour and capital) are mobile across boundaries, it is still the responsibility of governments in individual countries to secure jobs and prosperity for over 90 per cent of the population trapped within specific geographic boundaries. Mechanisms and institutions for global coordination of development are very weak. For about 70 years since the end of the Second World War and the setting up of the Bretton Woods Institutions and the United Nations (UN), the world has had tepid attempts at codification and enforcement of ‘International Standards’. Despite all the rules under the UN Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR), the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and the World Bank and IMF among others as well as all the ‘indices’ by the new industry of rating agencies, the global economy is still one governed by the survival of the fittest. Syria regime takes last rebel bastion near Qusayr AFPUpdated June 8, 2013, 9:54 pm DAMASCUS (AFP) - Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have now seized all of the Qusayr area in central Syria, state television reported Saturday, as the United Nations launched a record aid appeal for refugees. Saturday's seizure of Eastern Bweida village, the last rebel bastion in the area, brought the entire Qusayr region near the border with Lebanon back under regime control. It came four days after Qusayr, a strategically key town for both the regime and the rebels which had been in insurgent hands for a year, fell to the army and forces from Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah movement. "Our heroic troops have restored safety and security in Eastern Bweida" in the central Syrian province of Homs, the state broadcaster said. Hundreds of people who fled Qusayr as it fell on Wednesday had taken refuge there. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it was concerned about the fate of hundreds of fighters and civilians, ma ...

Syrian rebels: Kidnapping of UN personnel a mistake, release expected soon The kidnapping of 21 Filipino peacekeepers was a serious mistake, Brigadier General Hussam al-Din Awak of the Free Syria Army told BBC Arabic on Thursday, adding that the rebel group is working towards the release of the unarmed UN personnel. Al-Din Awak went on to blame local commanders on the ground for acting of their own accord and exhibiting poor judgment. He promised that the rebels would not harm the abducted UN soldiers. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights released a video earlier Thursday purporting to show six Filipino peacekeepers from a United Nations convoy detained in the south of the country on Wednesday. In the video, a man who identifies himself as a captain in the UN Filipino battalion says he and his men were in "a safe place" adding that they had stopped in the village of Jamla because of bombing and artillery fire in the area. "Civilian people helped us for our safety and distributed us in different place ...
Subject: UN envoy slams Canada 5 March 2013 Hon. Jason Kenney, PC., MP Minister of Citizenship, Immigration & Multiculturalism House of Commons, Ottawa Dear Jason: What's all this I read in today's Ottawa Citizen? It said "UN envoy slams Canada." It goes on to say, "The Federal Government is again engaged in a war of words with the United Nations. Canada can't credibly preach human rights on the international stage when too many of its own citizens are going hungry, the UN's right-to-food envoy, Olivier De Schutter, told the Canadian Press." Jason, that was a slap on the face of Canada, wasn't it? And as I told you earlier, you had the gall and temerity to go to Sri Lanka on January 7, and preach them about Human Rights saying that we are 'Holier than Thou'. And I told you, "Not so Jason". It is embarrassing, isn't it? You have painted us as a bunch of Hum Bugs in Sri Lanka, and no one in Sri Lanka believes you and us anymore. Let me just jog your memory. By 19 May 2009, the Sri Lankan soldiers li ...

If you can possibly get over the adorable thing that is happening in this photo, let’s think about why exactly a bunch of cute dachshunds acting as 36 dog delegates in a replica United Nations assembly on Human Rights might be successful as a sort of experimental theatre. Australian artist Bennett Miller’s “Dachshund UN“ opened yesterday in Toronto as part of the Harbourfront Centre’s 2013 World Stage performances, with a replica of the forum in Geneva as a stage for the organic chaos of the canine crowd. Faleomavaega said. Speaking at the committee hearing on “The Rebalance to Asia: Why South Asia Matters” yesterday, the congressman called for the withdrawal of the US sponsored resolution against Sri Lanka for focusing only on the last few months of the war and failing to acknowledge therefore almost 30 years of conflict. “Mr Chairman, the Tamil Tigers hacked to death innocent men, women and children in Sri Lanka, carried out some 378 suicide attacks more than any other terrorist organisation in the world,” he ...

United Nations blasting Canada on Human Rights. GENOCIDE is also mentioned.
Canada’s Federal Government, under the leadership of Stephen Harper’s Conservatives, have led a full-frontal attack on many of the values that have been cornerstones of Canada’s social justice and human rights reputation. Canada has gained a dubious new distinction for its mounting assault on human rights. Consider some of Canada’s recent history: 2012: Joined only eight other countries in opposing the United Nations recognition of Palestine as a non-member observer state. 2012: Blocked binding clauses to protect human rights in the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). 2012: Killed the International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development (Rights & Democracy), which for 24 years had promoted democracy and monitored human rights around the world. 2011: Formally withdrew from the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, abandoning the world’s only legally binding plan to tackle global warming. 2010: After years of chronic underfunding of the Canadian Human R ...

Implement the precautionary measures against forced evictions requested by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights in November 2010 and the recommendations of the International Tribunal of Evictions in September 2012; 2. Apply and enforce the Haitian civil and criminal laws that outline procedures and guidelines related to evictions; 3. Malawi will for the first time in history hold presidential candidates debates during the 2014 general elections campaigns, the country's electoral body has announced. One of the commissioners of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Reverend Emmanuel Chinkwita Phiri disclosed this during a Human Rights Day debate in Lilongwe hosted by Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) with support from the United Nations. But some people commenting on the development, have said the debates will put Malawi's president Joyce Banda at a disadvantage arguing Peter Mutharika and Atupele Muluzi will likely excel in those debates.
