It is a common value that the United Nations promotes and asks leaders near and far to put into practice," he said. The responsibility to protect populations is urgent: Ban Ki-moon | United Nations Radio
(6 mins) WARNING: CONFRONTING FOOTAGE We have staunchly resisted posting about the Israel-Palestine crisis on this page, as it's an international event. But both Tony Abbott and Malcolm were on radio this morning commenting on it. Their words are in this video. United Nations secretary-General Ban Ki-moon described the shelling of a UN school in Gaza that killed at least 15 people as they slept (mostly women and children) as "outrageous and unjustifiable". Hours later another 17 people died and 160 were wounded in a strike that hit a fruit and vegetable market near Gaza City. UN Deputy Director-General Jan Eliasson broke down yesterday when being interviewed on Al Jazeera Arabic. And you can understand why. So what do Turnbull and Abbott have to say on the matter? They are loathe to come forward and take sides. Turnbull has a large number of Jewish citizens in his electorate, and Abbott is loathe to take sides at the best of times (unless it involves criticising someone weaker than him, like the sick ...

United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon called Israel's latest incursion "atrocious," and said it must do far more to protect civilians. The U.N. Security Council was in an emergency session Sunday night at the request of Jordan on the situation in Gaza. Hamas' military wing claimed late Sunday that it captured and was holding hostage an Israeli soldier. Israel denied it. Israeli ambassador at the United Nations, Ron Prosor has asked US secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to fire his under-secretary Dr. Rima Khalaf for comparing the Israel Occupation Force (IOF) with Nazi Army. "The accusation that Israel is conducting ethnic-cleansing of Palestinians is the essence of modern antisemitism and it is unforgivable. We were hoping that dark opinions like the ones Khalaf expressed had vanished from the world," Prosor wrote to Ki-Moon. Last month, UN special envoy for Palestinian Territories, Dr. Richard Falk (Jewish), in his final report accused Israel for the on-going ethnic-cleansing of native Muslim and Christian Palestinians in Gaza, West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. The powerful Jewish Lobby had been calling for the dismissal of Falk for the last eight years. Last month, both Israeli and American envoys at United Nations expressed pleasure over Falk's retirement from the UN post.

The Fight against HIV/AIDS The African National Congress congratulates the Government and people of South Africa on the successes recorded in the fight again HIV/AIDS as contained in the United Nations (UN) report presented by its Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, yesterday, 10 June 2013. The report which reviews the Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS adopted by the General Assembly in 2011, notes that while Sub-Saharan Africa remains the worst-affected region by the effects of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Aids related deaths in South Africa had significantly dropped over the last 3 years. We have no doubt this decrease in Aids deaths in South Africa is a direct result of the ANC government`s successful HIV/ AIDS treatment programmes over, particularly, the last 5 years. Amongst the key interventions has been the massive voluntary counseling and testing campaign ensuring that millions of people now know their status and where necessary get treatment. The Excellency Secretary General UNO Ban Ki-moon New York, USA. 03rd May, 2013 The UNO should play its role in stopping Human Rights abuses being committed by Pakistan against the Baloch It’s to bring to your attention that the Baloch people have time and again knocked the door of the United Nations to seek help to stop massive Human Rights abuses they suffer at the hands of Pakistani and Iranian states. However, with utmost regret, the esteemed world body has not taken any significant step so far to investigate these crimes against humanity being committed, especially by Pakistan. Under its infamous “kill and dump operation”, Pakistan forces have kidnapped more than 5000 Baloch during the last five years and killed at least 700 of them, later dumping their bodies at desolated places. International Human Rights bodies, like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have confirmed these killings, however, only the United Nations has the mandate and authority to put pressure on Pakistan to stop it ...

Another interesting facts about past UN Secretary-Generals: - Kofi Annan is a twin, a particularly respected thing in Ghanaian culture. The Akan people of Ghana often name their children after the day of the week they were born. His name, Kofi, is given to boys born on a Friday. - Let's face it: Boutros Boutros-Ghali has a funny name. Indeed, an Icelandic soccer team has been named after him! "Boutros Boutros" once said ...

Seems legit: UNITED NATIONS OFFICE OF INTERNAL OVERSIGHT SERVICES(OIOS) Internal Audit, Monitoring, Consulting and Investigations Division From: Mrs. Carman Lapointe Young. To: Fund Beneficiary, This is to officially inform you that sequel to the recent high rate of criminal acts like scam, fraud, impostors and drug trafficking in Africa and sub-African regions, the United Nations secretary-general has delegated me (Mrs. Carman Lapointe-Young) as the Internal auditor, monitoring & investigation division of the Office of the Internal Oversight services (OIOS). I was delegated and nominated to come down to Nigeria to make sure that fund beneficiaries like you get their funds because the rate at which fund beneficiaries are being treated in this country is not good, some of them has lost everything they have, rendered homeless and some declared bankrupt because the top bank officials continuously ask beneficiaries to pay/send money to them as they claimed that they are from one big offices & will help you ge ...
UPDATE 3:20 PM Tel Aviv reporting from Kfar Sava. LATEST to the Minute. 15:17 The Israeli Air Force has stepped up strikes across the Gaza Strip in wake of Wednesday’s bus bombing, Channel 2 is reporting. Ehud Yaari, the channel’s Arab affairs expert, says Israeli aircraft are bombing targets from Rafah, at the territory’s southern edge, to neighborhoods north of Gaza City. Yaari says “tens of thousands” of Palestinians have fled their homes in Gaza in recent hours, fearing Israeli retaliation for the Tel Aviv bombing. They are seeking shelter in schools and other facilities run by the United Nations in the Palestinian territory, he said. 15:02 Ban Ki-moon has condemned the terror attack in Tel Aviv: “The Secretary-General was shocked at the news of the terror attack on a bus today in the center of Tel Aviv. If today the United Nations announced that it had received unconfirmed reports of 50,000 casualties in a war off limits to journalists - wouldn't the world take notice and try and stop the killings? Syrian jets bombed suburbs of Damascus and a car bomb killed 10 people in the capital on Monday, on the last day of a four-day truce which United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon acknowledged had failed. Each side blamed the other for breaching the Eid al-Adha truce arranged by international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who nevertheless promised to pursue his peace efforts. "I am deeply disappointed that the parties failed to respect the call to suspend fighting," Ban said in Seoul, where he was visiting to receive the Seoul Peace Prize. "This crisis cannot be solved with more weapons and bloodshed... the guns must fall silent," he said. Brahimi, after meeting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, voiced regret that the cease-fire had not worked better. Asked whether UN peacekeepers might be sent to Syria, he said there was no immediate plan for that. Although President Bashar Assad's government and several rebel groups accepted the plan to stop shooting over the Muslim religious holiday, it failed to stem ...

A large number of Muslims are killed in Burma by Budisht , army and police of Burma as Muslims are in minority in Burma but silence of World Powers on this issue is a more worse crime. Muslims are compelled to remain inside the country as internal refugees. They face abuse in the forms of rape, torture, extortion, and murder. Sexual violence and terrorizing thousands of Muslims women and their families The situation of the Muslim minorities is more complicated because they are not recognized as citizens and any scope of any reconciliation will not give them any protection. The longer the UN Security Council remains silent, the more people will die You and I can make that happen. Burma's Noble Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi has asked the International Community for help. Tell the U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to pass a resolution to stop the genocide in Burma. The clock is ticking. God have mercy on us all if we stand by and do nothing. NATO Proxies Turkey and Saudi Arabia Move to War Footing on Eve of Syrian ‘Peace Summit’ The NATO-backed covert aggression against Syria could be reaching a tipping point for all-out war involving state forces. That should be no surprise. For the past 16 months, NATO and its regional proxies have been steadily increasing the violence and turmoil inside and outside Syria, while the Western corporate-controlled media maintain the ridiculous fiction that the bloody chaos is largely due to the government forces of President Bashar Al Assad cracking down on “peaceful protesters”. Ironically, the crisis is culminating at the same time that the United Nations convenes an emergency summit on Syria in Geneva this weekend. The meeting, which is ostensibly aimed at “reviving the Kofi Annan peace plan”, will be attended by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and other “invited” regional states. The irony is that leading NATO members, the US, Britain and France, as well as their Turki ...

Your Excellency, Keeping grave and worsening situation in Tibet, the Tibetan Parliament-in-exile organised six month long worldwide “Flame of Truth” Relay from July 6, 2012 to bring UN member states and your Excellency’s attention to the issue of Tibet. Over the last sixty years since the Communist China’s brutal occupation of Tibet, Beijing has never changed its hard-line policies on Tibet. This has resulted in China exploiting not only Tibet’s rich natural resources but also to kill, torture, imprisons and harass the Tibetan people continuously violating Universal Declarations of Human Rights and other UN treaties. Since 2008 the Chinese security forces have particularly cracked down *** Tibetans leading to numerous deaths and countless tortures. The situation is getting worse each day. Consequently, the Tibetan people have been setting themselves on fire one after another t ...

UN head Ban Ki-moon, who is meeting senior officials and addressing the parliament in Burma, says he feels 'optimistic', but warns of 'hard work ahead'.
U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon made a landmark visit to a fast-changing Myanmar on Sunday to encourage further reforms and push for a further easing of Western sanctions to help normalize United Nations operations in the long isolated country. Ban's trip was his first since a reformist, quasi-civilian government took office a year ago, ending five decades of authoritarian military rule and thawing Myanmar's relations with the International Community. The government, led by remnants of the former junta, has stunned the world with economic reforms and unprecedented engagement with the West, the political opposition and ethnic minority rebel groups. Ban called that progress encouraging, but still tenuous. "I'm much more optimistic and hopeful about Myanmar," he told reporters in the remote capital Naypyitaw, where he was due to meet President Thein Sein and other important reformers. "Nobody said this was an easy process. This process is risky and fragile. We can't always be unconditionally optimistic, we have to be ...
