CHALLENGES TO NEWBORNCARE IN GHANA - STORIES FROM MBU – GYIKUA PLANGE-RHULE, PAEDIATRIC SOCIETY OF GHANA, NEWBORN HEALTH AVOCACY It’s another day in the Mother Baby Unit, (MBU) which is the newborn care unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) where babies below 2 months are admitted when they fall ill. A young mother had just “rushed” in her 5 day old baby boy. I say “rushed” but the reality was that it took about 6 hours for the grandmother to organise the money for the journey (the father of the baby had denied responsibility for the pregnancy…) and another hour to be seen at the Health Post from which she was referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). It had taken her another hour or so of wandering around KATH, starting from the Accident and Emergency block. There she was told to go to the Paediatric Emergency Unit where she was told that her baby was too young to be seen there and a Health Care Assistant was asked to bring her to MBU. Worked last night on the data center Monthly maintenance window until 3am then was up at 6:30am due to body clock and dog clock. Did get a nice nap at our Unit 59 townhouse later in the afternoon. Spent the morning at Lorraine's Unit 57 and watched the CBS Sunday Morning and Face the Nation and read the Sunday paper whilst checking on Lorraine and getting her breakfast. I do this on Sunday's with Snuggles so that Sharon can sleep in while we get use to the new level of care for Lorraine as well as allowing Buddy out of the Kennel time. He is much happier this summer with all the outside time and out of the kennel time I have been giving him. Remembering my dad on Father's Day (Korean War Vet) today. This summer, history will record the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. Sadly, many of us will not remember the “Forgotten War.” It was one of America’s most brutal wars, in which United States forces, together with other United Nations countries, stopped the superior-numbered Soviet and Chinese communist forces from overrunning the new Republic of Korea (South) from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. America paid a hefty price, 54,246 lost lives, 103,248 wounded, 7,286 prisoners of war, 2,847 dead in inhumane captivity and 8,207 still missing and unaccounted for. American soldiers, sailors, airmen and women fought a sad, bloody, unpopular, yet valiant war. Mr and Mrs brought their ill child to the children emergency unit. Child turned out to be SS. Mom said she is AS and dad said he is AA. My father was 64 when I was born, I never saw him a young man, my memories begin from when he was 70-1 years, the only time I topped my class as Class 1, I was 6, that is my first memory, after my score card I went to his Clinic, he was extremely happy. I never repeated the feat as I transgressed in to novels and other library stuff which he encouraged and egged me on, he and only he is responsible for my diversity of interests. World Population to Increase by One Billion by 2025 UNITED NATIONS, New York — The current world population of 7.2 billion is projected to increase by 1 billion over the next 12 years and reach 9.6 billion by 2050, according to a United Nations report launched today, which points out that growth will be mainly in developing countries, with more than half in Africa. The report, World Population Prospects: the 2012 Revision , notes that the population of developed regions will remain largely unchanged at around 1.3 billion from now until 2050. I need help these two horses need feed hay and care! There is no water where they are. The owner lives 7 miles away and the truck they use to bring them water is broke down. Hey, A patient was killed and three crew members were injured last night when a medical helicopter crashed in Latimer County, shortly after taking off from Choctaw Nation Health Center in Talihina in LeFlore County, Oklahoma. The Eagle Med helicopter was carrying the patient, a pilot, a nurse and a paramedic when it crashed on takeoff about 150 miles southeast of Oklahoma City. Paul Simon , Accidental Freedom Fighter ! Sometimes not being to sleep has it's rewards. Last night I watched the PBS documentary "Paul Simons Graceland Journey". I followed Paul's fascination with South African music and his determination to go to South Africa in defiance of a UN resolution that banned performers from entering SA . It covered his discovery of Ladysmith Black Mambazo and their music. Despite opposition from the United Nations and the ANC Paul was able to bring this group together to create a work of music that stands even today. More than that he brought awareness of the terrible issue of Apartheid to the world outside of South Africa and helped to bring about the end of this discrimination.
