Unit Meeting of UMW in February The unit meeting of the United Methodist Women on February 23 started with a blessing of the food by Brenda Pickering. As we ate the delicious food, we had a short business meeting. There 12 ladies in attendance. The Moey Reed-Martha Barber Circle was the hostess and prepared all the food. Pam Mount passed around copies of the treasurer's report and informed us that she had conducted an informal audit and all was now up to date. She informed us that there was a donation of $250 for special food (funeral meals) that would be divided between the circles. A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to do this. and Pam requested that Julia write a letter to the Bank of Wiggins to inform them that we have elected new officers and the authorized persons on our checking account should be changed to reflect that. Linda Williams and Brenda Pickering are to come off and Pam Mount and Julia Brammer added. There was no secretary's report for January as our meeting for ...

By Ishmael F. Menkor   The Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Liberia Unit on Wednesday February 20, 2013 launched a sensitization campaign on the ECOWAS protocol on free movement of persons, goods and services in Ganta City.   In an overview of the program, the national head Otis D. Wesseh said the vision of ECOWAS seeks to have a borderless West Africa.   “There will be border for all member countries, but under this protocol, people will not be molested or intimidated by immigration of custom officers while travelling from one member state to the other,” Mr. Wesseh said.   He said there would be a one visa system covering all ECOWAS states as well as the introduction of single ECOWAS passport and abolition of residence permit requirement for ECOWAS citizens in Member states.   “In this protocol there will be exchange of information by security operatives at the borders and sensitization of operatives on free movement,” Mr. Wesseh continued.   The sensitization campaign in G ...

Some interesting facts of our churchs' history: In 1886, minutes show that Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church was on the Mt. Vernon Circuit for the 1st time. In an annual report in 1886, the value of the church was listed as $1500. Camp meetings and Grove meetings are mentioned as early as 1884. In 1895 the church became incorporated. In 1910 the front walk was built by WE Furniss for $105. The 1st Homecoming Service was introduced by Rev. APT Hudson in 1942 and one is held every year since established. Earliest mention of the Ladies Aid group, now known as the United Methodist Women was in 1905. It was those ladies that purchased the Lodge Hall which has been our only church hall. In 1946, land was purchased from Mary Simpkins for our cemetery. In 1951-54, plans were carried out to add four Sunday School rooms to our church building. The Candelabras we currently use in our Sanctuary were built by Rev. Loar from a cedar tree that fell during Hurricane Hazel. The stump remains on the walk to this day. In 19 ...

United Methodist Women Joins Ecumenical Call for Commonsense Gun Laws United Methodist Women members were among hundreds who marched in Seattle calling for stricter regulations of firearms on January 13, 2013. By Yvette Moore January 17, 2013 United Methodist Women joined more than 40 national faith groups signing a Jan. 14 ecumenical letter to both houses of the U.S. Congress asking for commonsense legislation to reduce gun violence. The letter from the Faiths United To Prevent Gun Violence coalition calls for legislative action that: • Mandates criminal background checks for every person seeking to purchase a gun. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System would be used in every gun sale, including online, gun show and private sales, not just those by licensed dealerships. • Bans civilian access to high-capacity weapons and ammunition magazines. The group called for an updating the 2004 federal ban on assault weapons that would take such weapons out of local communities. • Makes gun tra ...
Continued praise for your prayers! Tim says that since he called for the prayer chain to start his pain and other problems are nearly gone - another miracle. We will keep the urologist appt. in hopes of discovering what happened and how to prevent it from happening again! More praises - PJ sang "Pie Jesu" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem" and won her first solo competition gold medal. (Tim posted her pic on his timeline and will share her performance soon no doubt!) I am back from a lovely United Methodist Women's retreat and my bruising from the 1st vein surgery is nearly gone. Bring on Sunday morning preaching and the next round of docs this week! PRAISE THE LORD!
This account is from an address, "The History of Washington United Methodist Church," given by Mr. Charles M. Boso, Church Historian, on March 10, 1981, to the United Methodist Women. =  On December 15, 1772, George Washington was given a deed to Washington Bottom for his services in the French and Indian War. The area consisted of 2,314 acres. Washington's holding just in the Ohio Valley was around 10,000 acres. In 1799 Washington died, and he had made a will dividing the property here into two tracts. Washington had set it up that his heirs were to draw lots for their share of the inheritance. The upper tract starting at Locks Lane, ultimately went to George Lewis. The lower end of the Bottom ultimately went to Colonel Francis Keene. Mr. George Lewis divided his property into six tracts put in the names of his six children. In 1811 the Keenes came to the lower end of the Bottom and built a home behind the present Burdox plant.   In the 1820s the Methodist Episcopal circuit riders came around. They wer ...
Supporting Missions and Honoring Our Growth This Sunday at our 11 a.m. service, our United Methodist Women will present and recognize the babies born in our congregation last year. A gift will be made to missions in the name of each of these babies and we will honor them and their parents – it will be a lively service with all those babies! It is a day of gratitude from our congregation for the vitality and growth within our church. While we will present the babies only at the 11:00 service, the theme for both services are the same as we consider our responsibilities to these babies in terms of a nurturing, inviting congregation intent on knowing, living, teaching and sharing the faith story. We had a fantastic MLK celebration last Sunday. Thanks to our Chancel Choir for their last minute substitution for Clark Atlanta who was unable to come because of a flu outbreak in the choir. Our choir was fantastic We were also blessed by the beautiful voices of Ann Marie McPhail and Pamela Dillard. What awesome . ...

NEW YEARS MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT, FREDERICKSBURG DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN       Happy New Year from all of us on your 2013 Fredericksburg District UMW Mission Team! What a joy and blessing it is to be a part of this amazing organization of women. The following was posted in our church newsletter this morning by our pastor. Such a great story, not just of the history of the Methodist church, but also about how God works and makes things happen despite the odds. He doesn't let snow storms stop Him. He has no limitations. Thank God for that!!!     Pastor Paul’s Corner... “In 1869, Mrs. William Butler and Mrs. Edwin Parker, wives of missionaries to India, were home on furlough. They spoke to a group of women in Boston. Only six women were present because of an intense storm. Mrs. Butler told about the desperate spiritual and physical needs of women in India. A male doctor could not treat women. Schooling for girls was almost non-existent. Single, trained and dedicated women were needed for medical and educational work. “The six women who were present called another meeting of women, wrote a constitution, and organized the Methodist Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society (WFMS). By November 1869, the newly formed organization raised fund ...

At each of our worship services this Sunday, we will take time to consecrate and pray for our church leadership for 2013, including the members of our various committees and work areas, our delegates to Annual Conference, our members of United Methodist Women and United Methodist Men. Our Church Council this year is being chaired by Helen Howard, with Ken McCannon as Vice-Chair, and Laurie Anne Hudgeons as Secretary. The Church Council will meet this Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the Wesley Room as we launch a new year of ministries together. We are grateful for each of you who has made your commitments of membership and discipleship in the life of this congregation. Those words have accompanied our family’s bunk-bed, bed-time rituals for years. Excerpts of an article written by Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman - is NOT a Catholic. Be proud that you're a Catholic. Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States, namely the Catholic Church? Do you know - the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to that Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. The graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%. The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students. The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people - not just Catholics - in the United States today But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, whi ...

The religious community is divided when it comes to supporting *** marriage. Leaders both for and against the idea testified in a Senate committee hearing yesterday. The Catholic Conference of Illinois argued that allowing *** couples to marry undermines the natural order of family. But a heterosexual pastor from the United Methodist Church says scripture allows same sex marriage. She says all people were created equal in God's eyes, regardless of their sexual preference. She and asked lawmakers to make it the same way under Illinois law.

I have been reading Shannon McFate's and Ron Spinelli's somewhat daily "I am thankful for..." items, and thought I would add one of my own, one that most of y'all don't know about. I am really thankful for the United Methodist Women of the Summit United Methodist Church. Back during the Vietnam years, they decided to show their support for church members in the military, so, every Christmas, they collected homemade cookies, and sent boxes of them to each service member. I don't know if they still keep it up (They probably do.), but, for TWENTY years, I received Christmas boxes of cookies from them. I couldn't eat all of the cookies by myself, although I tried the first few times, so I would walk around and share them with other Marines, and explain that they came from the women of my church. Not one Marine took more than one cookie! Ever! I still get a lump in my throat thinking of those gallant ladies, some of whom ar no longer with us. (I retired from the Corps 23 Years ago.) Thanks, Ladies!
Great job! We provided 25 Thanksgiving baskets to families in need and, with the help of Peoples Bank employees (thanks to Carolyn Krohn), we filled and delivered 124 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child to distribute to needy children around the world. Thanks to all who donated to these projects, to the Robert Boyer class for buying the turkeys, and to the United Methodist Women who generously underwrote a large part of the shipping cost of the boxes.
Counting my blessings today. Had a great day at church; including the United Methodist Women's Bake Sale! Nothing like a piece of fresh apple pecan cake and a glass of milk. except maybe the opportunity to share it with our neighbor friends across the street! Also got to attend the annual Mercy hospice volunteer appreciation and recognition luncheon this afternoon. The patients and families benefit greatly from their kindness and presence. So thankful for people who step up and give freely of their time. When a person aspires to be something in life, isn't it wonderful when they just want to make a difference in someone else's life?

What an amazing service and luncheon - a beautiful patriotic service, a gracious tribute to my grandmother Ruth Kinne, encouraging words from Senator Jeff Sessions, and an eloquent Morning Message from Lt. Governor Kay Ivey! A great way to start such an important week in our country...so proud to be from Camden!
t was a glorious night last night! We had our auction for the Jefferson County's "Toys for Kids" organization. As the night unfolded and 5 pm grew near with scant a goodie for the Bake Sale, I was hyperventilating. Then, the goodies started to roll, pile, cascade in the door and another table had to be set up to hold it all! Cakes, and cookies, and candy (oh my!) as far as the eye could see! Bless you, bless you, you wonderful, magnificent bakers of the church! Then the second wave of dismay set in: when the big hand on the clock was about to strike 6 pm and there wasn't a room full of people, I was worried. So, I slipped off to a dark, quiet place and asked God to help us make the night a success. This is where God's and my ideas of success differ. To me, success was going to be a gym so crowded with people that there was going to be standing room only and fighting over the auction items. To Him, it was 50 people and let the highest bidder wins. And, that was all it took. The total earned was almost $350 ...

Working together as one we have the power to change the world and make it a better place. We also heard from some awesome and dynamic young women. Two traveled to Taize France to experience the power of worship with people from many different cultures. One young lady spoke on the topic of "This Is Not Your Grandmothers UMW" and how change is taking place to incorporate the interest and issues that are important to younger women. Ended the day at the Silver Dinner in Cherry Hill with good friends Linda Romanik, Rocky Cronk and June McCullough. It was a long day but very inspiring.

Any woman can volunteer to decorate a table however she chooses and brings her own china, silver, etc. for it. There is also a silent auction and a program. Today Becky Nissen, a local harpist, played for us. She is very good with all types of music, but jazz is her specialty, an unusual one for the harp. It was a great concert, a delicious meal and fun with friends and guests.
This week Foothills UMC took in tons(literally!) of rummage, donations that people no longer had use of. We organized and had a three-day rummage sale. The items sold received new lives in the hands of people who needed them. Whatever wasn't sold was donated to the Disabled American Veterans. All in all, the United Methodist Women rummage sale raised over $8,200! Thank you to all who came and donated items and/or time to organize this all.
I reposted this because this debate on the last post was getting out of hand.no comments on this one please

United Methodist Women have their own ad to counter Pamela Geller's subway ads.
Did anyone watch the Documentary on PBS Monday and Tuesday at 9 pm? It was called Half The Sky named after a book by that same name. It was written by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. It was on the United Methodist Women's book list for 2010 under the category of Leadership. This was very difficult to watch for me. When I was reading it, I had to quit reading it just before bedtime, as it affected my sleep. It is the hardened bare truth of the way women and girls are treated around the world. But the up side is that it also shows in each situation someone who has taken responsibility to change the situation in their little corner of our world. And I am confident that change will come. It is said that it takes only ten percent to effect change. Perhaps our part of the world can focus on violence against women - let's look at our own communities to become informed of the need.
Props to United Methodist Women for their ads that went up in NY subway system yesterday next to hate posters.
Brilliant comeback and poster by the United Methodist Women organization in NY. Great work!

Attended the James Mason School at Dauphin Way Yesterday. David gave a book review. The lady that introduced him told the group (mostly older folkes), he was Charlotte Smithweck's son and she gave a very sweet tribute to Charlotte and told the group how much she contributed to the United Methodist Women at Dauphin Way. I wish Sally and Suzanne could have been there. Her good friends Dot Patton and Steve Dill attended.

i have been in the Methodist Church since I was a young girl. I love how connected I have been through the years. Dan's first appointment to serve as pastor was Piedmont, Ok. While we were there our oldest daughter Rachel was born in 1975 and our twins were born in 1977. Rachel is commissioned as a Deaconess with the United Methodist Church. Evidently her name appears on United Methodist Women calendars as a missionary to pray for and support. She received a Birthday Card from a UMW group in Piedmont. The first signature was one of my friends Joyce Logan who Rachel had not seen in over thirty years. What a blessing!
