Margaret Christine McSwain "Marge" Brown, a longtime resident of Charlottesville, passed away peacefully in UVA Hospital on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct 30. She was 89 years old and lived a full life of service - to her country in time of war, to her family and community in time of peace, and to her church and all mankind in her numerous missionary travels all over the world. She was born on July 28, 1924 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, the first child of John Daniel McSwain, a haberdasher, and his wife, Rhoda E. Davis. During the depression, her father moved the family and his business to Toronto, Canada, and she became a Canadian citizen. Upon turning 18 in 1942, she enlisted in the Canadian Women's Army Corps. From the inception of the CWAC in 1941, until its dissolution in 1946, she was one of only 21,642 women to serve in the Corps. Attaining the rank of Corporal, she was stationed in Washington, DC with her unit, whose mission was to draft plans for howitzers. After the war, she worked as a se ...

Fall Festival Update - Silent, Children's, and Live Auctions! We hold three different auctions during Fall Festival; all take place in the Grace UMC Fellowship Hall: - Our silent auction features items donated by both our congregation and our vendors, and runs from 9 AM to 3 PM. Basically, you view the items, submit your bid on a bid sheet, and the highest bidder at the end of the auction wins the item. - Our children's auction, held from 5 to 5:30 PM, is specifically for children ages 3-12. Auction items include everything from stuffed animals to toys; these items often sell for anywhere from 25 cents to $1.50. - Our live auction, featuring items donated by our congregation and our vendors, runs from 6 PM until complete, during the fellowship meal. This auction is a complete blast! Rex Hooten, a professional auctioneer, returns again this year to call the auction, and he is extremly funny! We have the most amazing items in this auction, from hand-carved crosses to gift baskets, and from gift certificates ...

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN: YADKIN VALLEY DISTRICT, WNCC It's almost time for our Annual Meeting at Pilot Mountain U.M. Church. I do not have many names of persons who have read in 2012. My reports are only showing numbers and not names. If you would like a Reading Program Certificate, be sure that someone from your unit sends those names to me. Include 1. Church name (and indicate which county.there are more than one church with the same name) 2. Individual name 3. Which plan you completed. My e-mail address is available in your newsletters. I can put blank certificates in your folders that you will get and your Reading Co-ordinator can fill in the names. This is what I will have to do if I don't get the individual names. Hope to see you at the meeting.

Somehow summers have gotten busier over the years for me. My check list keeps getting longer and longer. So far I can check off the following: 1. Attended Regional Training at Shenandoah Univ. and co-managed the Program Resources Room for three days. 2. Vacation Bible School - Kindergarten teacher and co-director (need more stamina!) Was fun! 3. Scholarship Task Force - have met and chosen the 18 scholarship recipients (United Methodist Women fund these each year) 4. Received 20 boxes of books to sort for Mission u, happening later this month (actually can't check off the sorting yet :) 5. Borrowed a wheelchair for Mom, as her knee is really bad. Will leave for vacation on Saturday. Lake Gaston, here we come! I really don't want to check this off the list too quickly. Still to come: Mission u in late July and a wedding in Oswego in early August. Maybe the beach for our wedding anniversary. And of course, church meetings, doctor's visits for Mom. Life is full! Thanks be to God!

UMW United Methodist Women is a group of women who know God and seek to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ. Through Bible studies, devotions and learning about our World, we offer programs on social issues, mission and service projects. We have two to three fund raisers each year for local and global missions. Members accept the purpose of the UMW as their own and are willing to participate as members in the work of the Unit through service, prayers, giving and through involvement in the total program of the church. We currently have four Circles who meet during the school year. We are interested in starting new ones. Members determine the focus of their group. Over the years, we have had Bible and book studies, sewing groups complete with lunch, and a variety of programs. Child care for daytime meetings can be arranged as needed. We also have five Unit meetings each year for all the members and often have speakers concerning various issues and to make decisions regarding our fundrai ...

Report from West Africa Area Seminar I've said it before and I'll say it again - what a privilege the position of World President is, particularly in relation to attending Area Seminars and meeting the women who make our Federation so wonderful! There is a downside - hours on planes and in airports, hours without sleep, and, in the latest trip, returning with some "bug" which has laid me low and put me into slow mode for 3 weeks - but the encounters in new countries, with new cultures, with inspiring stories and with new friends, make those things fade. I travelled on Friday, May 17th, via Guangzhou, China, through Amsterdam to Brussels. There I overnight and connected with Regula, our Vice President. On Sunday, the 19th, we flew into Banjul, the capital of The Gambia. Carla, World Secretary, and Leu, World Treasurer, had already arrived. The Gambia, home of West Africa Area President, Matilda Johnson, was the host country for the WTP and the Seminar, welcoming some 200 women from Nigeria, Ivory Coast, B ...

Unit Meeting of UMW in February The unit meeting of the United Methodist Women on February 23 started with a blessing of the food by Brenda Pickering. As we ate the delicious food, we had a short business meeting. There 12 ladies in attendance. The Moey Reed-Martha Barber Circle was the hostess and prepared all the food. Pam Mount passed around copies of the treasurer's report and informed us that she had conducted an informal audit and all was now up to date. She informed us that there was a donation of $250 for special food (funeral meals) that would be divided between the circles. A motion was made, seconded and passed unanimously to do this. and Pam requested that Julia write a letter to the Bank of Wiggins to inform them that we have elected new officers and the authorized persons on our checking account should be changed to reflect that. Linda Williams and Brenda Pickering are to come off and Pam Mount and Julia Brammer added. There was no secretary's report for January as our meeting for ...

By Ishmael F. Menkor   The Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) Liberia Unit on Wednesday February 20, 2013 launched a sensitization campaign on the ECOWAS protocol on free movement of persons, goods and services in Ganta City.   In an overview of the program, the national head Otis D. Wesseh said the vision of ECOWAS seeks to have a borderless West Africa.   “There will be border for all member countries, but under this protocol, people will not be molested or intimidated by immigration of custom officers while travelling from one member state to the other,” Mr. Wesseh said.   He said there would be a one visa system covering all ECOWAS states as well as the introduction of single ECOWAS passport and abolition of residence permit requirement for ECOWAS citizens in Member states.   “In this protocol there will be exchange of information by security operatives at the borders and sensitization of operatives on free movement,” Mr. Wesseh continued.   The sensitization campaign in G ...

Some interesting facts of our churchs' history: In 1886, minutes show that Asbury Methodist Episcopal Church was on the Mt. Vernon Circuit for the 1st time. In an annual report in 1886, the value of the church was listed as $1500. Camp meetings and Grove meetings are mentioned as early as 1884. In 1895 the church became incorporated. In 1910 the front walk was built by WE Furniss for $105. The 1st Homecoming Service was introduced by Rev. APT Hudson in 1942 and one is held every year since established. Earliest mention of the Ladies Aid group, now known as the United Methodist Women was in 1905. It was those ladies that purchased the Lodge Hall which has been our only church hall. In 1946, land was purchased from Mary Simpkins for our cemetery. In 1951-54, plans were carried out to add four Sunday School rooms to our church building. The Candelabras we currently use in our Sanctuary were built by Rev. Loar from a cedar tree that fell during Hurricane Hazel. The stump remains on the walk to this day. In 19 ...

United Methodist Women Joins Ecumenical Call for Commonsense Gun Laws United Methodist Women members were among hundreds who marched in Seattle calling for stricter regulations of firearms on January 13, 2013. By Yvette Moore January 17, 2013 United Methodist Women joined more than 40 national faith groups signing a Jan. 14 ecumenical letter to both houses of the U.S. Congress asking for commonsense legislation to reduce gun violence. The letter from the Faiths United To Prevent Gun Violence coalition calls for legislative action that: • Mandates criminal background checks for every person seeking to purchase a gun. The National Instant Criminal Background Check System would be used in every gun sale, including online, gun show and private sales, not just those by licensed dealerships. • Bans civilian access to high-capacity weapons and ammunition magazines. The group called for an updating the 2004 federal ban on assault weapons that would take such weapons out of local communities. • Makes gun tra ...

This account is from an address, "The History of Washington United Methodist Church," given by Mr. Charles M. Boso, Church Historian, on March 10, 1981, to the United Methodist Women. =  On December 15, 1772, George Washington was given a deed to Washington Bottom for his services in the French and Indian War. The area consisted of 2,314 acres. Washington's holding just in the Ohio Valley was around 10,000 acres. In 1799 Washington died, and he had made a will dividing the property here into two tracts. Washington had set it up that his heirs were to draw lots for their share of the inheritance. The upper tract starting at Locks Lane, ultimately went to George Lewis. The lower end of the Bottom ultimately went to Colonel Francis Keene. Mr. George Lewis divided his property into six tracts put in the names of his six children. In 1811 the Keenes came to the lower end of the Bottom and built a home behind the present Burdox plant.   In the 1820s the Methodist Episcopal circuit riders came around. They wer ...
Supporting Missions and Honoring Our Growth This Sunday at our 11 a.m. service, our United Methodist Women will present and recognize the babies born in our congregation last year. A gift will be made to missions in the name of each of these babies and we will honor them and their parents – it will be a lively service with all those babies! It is a day of gratitude from our congregation for the vitality and growth within our church. While we will present the babies only at the 11:00 service, the theme for both services are the same as we consider our responsibilities to these babies in terms of a nurturing, inviting congregation intent on knowing, living, teaching and sharing the faith story. We had a fantastic MLK celebration last Sunday. Thanks to our Chancel Choir for their last minute substitution for Clark Atlanta who was unable to come because of a flu outbreak in the choir. Our choir was fantastic We were also blessed by the beautiful voices of Ann Marie McPhail and Pamela Dillard. What awesome . ...

The following was posted in our church newsletter this morning by our pastor. Such a great story, not just of the history of the Methodist church, but also about how God works and makes things happen despite the odds. He doesn't let snow storms stop Him. He has no limitations. Thank God for that!!!     Pastor Paul’s Corner... “In 1869, Mrs. William Butler and Mrs. Edwin Parker, wives of missionaries to India, were home on furlough. They spoke to a group of women in Boston. Only six women were present because of an intense storm. Mrs. Butler told about the desperate spiritual and physical needs of women in India. A male doctor could not treat women. Schooling for girls was almost non-existent. Single, trained and dedicated women were needed for medical and educational work. “The six women who were present called another meeting of women, wrote a constitution, and organized the Methodist Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society (WFMS). By November 1869, the newly formed organization raised fund ...
Most of you may know by now that Mrs. Virginia Hay's memorial service is scheduled for Monday at 11am here at Wesley UMC, with a reception to be provided by her beloved United Methodist Women. As a former UMW president, we want to honor her in a special way. If you are able, please consider providing a salad (any kind), sandwiches, or a dessert. We are planning for about 150 in attendance. At each of our worship services this Sunday, we will take time to consecrate and pray for our church leadership for 2013, including the members of our various committees and work areas, our delegates to Annual Conference, our members of United Methodist Women and United Methodist Men. Our Church Council this year is being chaired by Helen Howard, with Ken McCannon as Vice-Chair, and Laurie Anne Hudgeons as Secretary. The Church Council will meet this Saturday morning at 9 a.m. in the Wesley Room as we launch a new year of ministries together. We are grateful for each of you who has made your commitments of membership and discipleship in the life of this congregation. With the help and the inspirations of God, the whole life and existence of our church flows from the free will commitments and volunteer dedication of each member and participant. You are the church; we are the church together. Especially in this season since Christmas Eve we continue to welcome many guests to our worship and Sunday Scho ...

The Unit Meeting of United Methodist Women scheduled for tonight has been cancelled due to the weather.
The wonderful ladies from my United Methodist Women's unit brought a little prayer quilt for Reid. He is going into Children's Hospital today after one more test, and will be getting an infusion of drugs to help with his Crohn's Disease. He just turned 6, but is such a little fighter. Please remember him, Josh, Ashley, and us grandparents as well. Also remember Jaxon who has a problem with his knee that has sidelined him for at least two weeks. We just need a lot of prayer today.

Where is the 70 degrees the weatherman promised us for today. It has been overcast all day. It's all downhill for the week. I know it's winter but I want spring so bad. Church was nice today. We had our United Methodist Women's meeting afterwards. Large crowd attended today - that's good. Planning for an upcoming farm auction which our church has been invited to sell breakfast and lunch for a fundraiser. Sad to see more and more farmers giving up and selling out.

United Methodist Women shared this about ten years ago.it never gets too old...and needs to be remembered.
Those words have accompanied our family’s bunk-bed, bed-time rituals for years. By now, the hero of the nightly saga goes without saying: It’s my son, Levi, who is all normal-boy angles and activities, until evil rears its proverbial head. And then, then, Levi transforms into the ultimate super-hero...
Excerpts of an article written by Sam Miller, prominent Cleveland Jewish businessman - is NOT a Catholic. Be proud that you're a Catholic. Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States, namely the Catholic Church? Do you know - the Catholic Church educates 2.6 million students everyday at the cost to that Church of 10 billion dollars, and a savings on the other hand to the American taxpayer of 18 billion dollars. The graduates go on to graduate studies at the rate of 92%. The Church has 230 colleges and universities in the U.S. with an enrollment of 700,000 students. The Catholic Church has a non-profit hospital system of 637 hospitals, which account for hospital treatment of 1 out of every 5 people - not just Catholics - in the United States today But the press is vindictive and trying to totally denigrate in every way the Catholic Church in this country. They have blamed the disease of pedophilia on the Catholic Church, whi ...

The religious community is divided when it comes to supporting *** marriage. Leaders both for and against the idea testified in a Senate committee hearing yesterday. The Catholic Conference of Illinois argued that allowing *** couples to marry undermines the natural order of family. But a heterosexual pastor from the United Methodist Church says scripture allows same sex marriage. She says all people were created equal in God's eyes, regardless of their sexual preference. She and asked lawmakers to make it the same way under Illinois law.

I have been reading Shannon McFate's and Ron Spinelli's somewhat daily "I am thankful for..." items, and thought I would add one of my own, one that most of y'all don't know about. I am really thankful for the United Methodist Women of the Summit United Methodist Church. Back during the Vietnam years, they decided to show their support for church members in the military, so, every Christmas, they collected homemade cookies, and sent boxes of them to each service member. I don't know if they still keep it up (They probably do.), but, for TWENTY years, I received Christmas boxes of cookies from them. I couldn't eat all of the cookies by myself, although I tried the first few times, so I would walk around and share them with other Marines, and explain that they came from the women of my church. Not one Marine took more than one cookie! Ever! I still get a lump in my throat thinking of those gallant ladies, some of whom ar no longer with us. (I retired from the Corps 23 Years ago.) Thanks, Ladies!
Great job! We provided 25 Thanksgiving baskets to families in need and, with the help of Peoples Bank employees (thanks to Carolyn Krohn), we filled and delivered 124 shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child to distribute to needy children around the world. Thanks to all who donated to these projects, to the Robert Boyer class for buying the turkeys, and to the United Methodist Women who generously underwrote a large part of the shipping cost of the boxes.
Counting my blessings today. Had a great day at church; including the United Methodist Women's Bake Sale! Nothing like a piece of fresh apple pecan cake and a glass of milk. except maybe the opportunity to share it with our neighbor friends across the street! Also got to attend the annual Mercy hospice volunteer appreciation and recognition luncheon this afternoon. The patients and families benefit greatly from their kindness and presence. So thankful for people who step up and give freely of their time. When a person aspires to be something in life, isn't it wonderful when they just want to make a difference in someone else's life?

"What we are is God's gift to us...What we become is our gift to God" - Lt. Governor Kay Ivey during today's United Methodist Women's Day at Camden United Methodist Church! Governor Kay Ivey! A great way to start such an important week in our country...so proud to be from Camden!
t was a glorious night last night! We had our auction for the Jefferson County's "Toys for Kids" organization. As the night unfolded and 5 pm grew near with scant a goodie for the Bake Sale, I was hyperventilating. Then, the goodies started to roll, pile, cascade in the door and another table had to be set up to hold it all! Cakes, and cookies, and candy (oh my!) as far as the eye could see! Bless you, bless you, you wonderful, magnificent bakers of the church! Then the second wave of dismay set in: when the big hand on the clock was about to strike 6 pm and there wasn't a room full of people, I was worried. So, I slipped off to a dark, quiet place and asked God to help us make the night a success. This is where God's and my ideas of success differ. To me, success was going to be a gym so crowded with people that there was going to be standing room only and fighting over the auction items. To Him, it was 50 people and let the highest bidder wins. And, that was all it took. The total earned was almost $350 ...

Nashville by midnight central time - that's my goal!
Does anyone in the Oakland area know where to send the donations to the FCCLA for the Thanksgiving baskets? Our United Methodist Women would like to donate, but I don't have an address or a contact person.

Spent a wonderful day yesterday with my Sisters in Christ at the GNJAC Annual meeting of the United Methodist Women. Our theme for the day Was "One Body Many Parts" I Corinthians Chapter 12. Working together as one we have the power to change the world and make it a better place. We also heard from some awesome and dynamic young women. Two traveled to Taize France to experience the power of worship with people from many different cultures. One young lady spoke on the topic of "This Is Not Your Grandmothers UMW" and how change is taking place to incorporate the interest and issues that are important to younger women. Ended the day at the Silver Dinner in Cherry Hill with good friends Linda Romanik, Rocky Cronk and June McCullough. It was a long day but very inspiring.
Can someone please explain to me why United Methodist Women are defending jihad? Am I missing something?

Jackson, spending time with my Uncle Neil Kuvin and Aunt Anita in Louisville, KY, going on a silent retreat to the Abbey of Gethsemani in Trappist, KY, and coming back home to find my husband, Paul Atlas, healthy, happy and still loving me.
