Tolkien - ‘Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.” 3. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - “For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn?” 4. World Book Club: Jhumpa Lahiri: The Indian-American author on her book of short stories Unaccustomed Earth
Jhumpa Lahiri on BBC World Service book club programme, speaking about her short story collection 'Unaccustomed Earth', referencing of course Hawthorne's epigraph and... of interest to me, William Trevor. I feel a charity book shop hunt coming on soon. FYI: Lahiri does most of her reading in bed; is there any other way or place indeed?!

Good morning bookworms.. i just finished turning the pages of Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpa Lahiri.. a very easy heartwarming short stories read. dealing with bengali diaspora from a diverse angle .. at little bit of love .. loss and struggles as we pitch in our tents to make a new home. I loved the piece called Once in a lifetime .. couldnot put the book down when this little girl from bengalified bengali middle class family was talking to me .. funny enough i could relate to dilemmas of whether to experience north america as it is or the enforced bangla version of growing up that scared bengali parents often enforce their kids with .. seems like i have seen or see the characters of these stories all around..loved the way Lahiri painted each character- exquisite prose and emotional wisdom.. oh and what made it a tad bit more awesome for me was the fact that the stores are based on new england , where I am currently living. :):) HAPPY READING !!

Almost three hours now in a line for gas. Low gas light has been on since the start. Finished one book - Jhumpa Lahari's "Unaccustomed Earth", listened to some of NPR, ate dinner (MacDonalds - very pleased to find the cherry that I thought they didn't give me- in the bottom of my strawberry shake!), did FB several times, checked email, now working on Taylor Branch's "Pillar of Fire: American in the King Years." When the car ahead of me moves infrequently, I'm almost annoyed to have to put down my book. I think it's about time to have a snack. I think I'll have mixed nuts and dark chocolate instead of a banana and animal *** Just now car wouldn't start back up. I'm like 10-12 cars away from getting gas. May have to end up pushing it in.

As time slips by, and inertia sets in, all I can say to the girl who's never been in one place for too long, is this: "Human nature will not flourish, any more than a potato, if it be planted and replanted, for too long a series of generations, in the same worn-out soil. My children have had other birthplaces, and, so far as their fortunes may be within my control, shall strike their roots into 'unaccustomed earth'. Nathaniel Hawthrone - The Custom House"
