A chance to meet the pope January 16, 2015 By: Louine Hope Conserva A PUNONG barangay from San Dionisio, Iloilo will get the chance to meet Pope Francis this weekend. Monsignor Meliton Oso, chairman of the Jaro Archdiocesan Social Action Center (JASAC), said he brought with him Barangay Captain Rogelio Bernal of San Nicolas, San Dionisio to attend the concelebrated mass with the pope at the Quirino Grandstand on Sunday. “I was asked to bring with me a poor delegate and I chose Bernal because of his contribution during our rehabilitation program for Typhoon Yolanda in Northern Iloilo. His barangay received the Best Practice for our program,” he said. In an article from, Bernal narrated, ““Our communities were able to participate in the mapping of the affected areas in our barangay. We were able to know the extent of damage caused by Yolanda. From there, through the guidance of the community organizers from JASAC, we were able to ascertain and prioritize the things that we needed most. ...
The wide public support of the Czech citizens and the significant humanitarian assistance extended by the Government of the Czech Republic enabled a substantial increase of Czech assistance allotted to the needs of the victims of the typhoon Yolanda in Eastern Samar, Panay, *** and Leyte islands. The Czech support for Typhoon Yolanda rehabilitation efforts is apparent in two particular municipalities in the Visayan region—Makato, Aklan and Ajuy, Iloilo, Panay.
WHY IT IS HARD TO GET HARDWOODS FOR BUILDING IN SAMAR-LEYTE: Hi everyone. I am a New Zealander living in Eastern Samar for 8 years now. It is appropriate to review building practices and materials here in the light of two supertypoons in the space of 56 weeks. There are many problems here, essentially poverty, corruption, lack of suitable building materials. The Government will not allow the milling of any native hardwood timber, so coconut is commonly used. It soon becomes rotten &/or infested with termites so it is useless as a long term building material. Steel roof trusses rust near the sea, and in any event are too light structurally. Typhoon Yolanda proved beyond a doubt that buildings with steel roof trusses lost their roofs, whilst those with bolted yakal hardwood roof trusses survived (mostly). Such hardwoods are only available on the blackmarket; or otherwise as salvaged timber when large trees are washed up on the beaches as at present. But Yakal is so heavy ('ironwood') it generally ...
ANOTHER MUST READ. SHARING VETERAN JOURNALIST "Jun" Serafin Ledesma Jr's LATEST "MAGNUM OPUS". More than 365 days had elapsed, over P500-billion in national funds and foreign aids we never knew that when DPWH Sec. And so we go back to the question: What .. ...
Lawmaker lauds DILG for preemptive evacuations that saved thousands of lives MANILA, Dec. 10 (PNA) -- A ranking member of the Nationalist Peoples Coalition (NPC) on Wednesday lauded the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) for spearheading the preemptive evacuations in areas along the path of Typhoon Ruby (international name: Hagupit) that saved thousands of lives from the typhoon’s fury. Valenzuela City Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian specifically congratulated DILG Secretary Manuel Roxas II for being on the ground to lead and supervise the evacuation efforts and other preparations by Local Government units (LGUs) in Eastern Samar where Typhoon Ruby made its first landfall. “Secretary Roxas deserves to be commended for his efforts in ensuring that LGUs have learned their lesson from Typhoon Yolanda. And this they did by launching a massive evacuation operation days ahead of the storm, emptying whole towns and villages in coastal and landslide-prone areas,” Gatchalian, who is also a governor o ...
Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) has already passed Metro Manila today and is moving away from the Philippines. 23 people are said to have been killed by this typhoon. You may remember, Typhoon Haiyan, known in the Philippines as Typhoon Yolanda, killed at least 6,300 people in November 2013. This time people took precaution against Ruby such as evacuating well in advance etc..

Storm surges only entered the majority’s consciousness when Typhoon Yolanda devastated most of the Visayas, bringing 7-meter-high surges that claimed over 6,000 lives in Leyte and Samar in November 2013. The point cannot be emphasized enough: Storm surges can be fatal and we need to be prepared for…
Lessons unlearned – the lure of floodplains As Typhoon Ruby barreled down across the Visayas this weekend, authorities scrambled to ensure the evacuation of coastal communities in danger of storm surges. A little over a year after Typhoon Yolanda brought death and destruction, communities remain in the very same spot where meters-high waves brought mayhem and death – and even in the hardest-hit areas of Tacloban City and Guiuan. The reality is, the poor have no place to go but to highly flood-prone coasts where their livelihoods are. Poverty prevents people from accessing basic services like housing and the government's “low capacity” to provide socialized housing will drive them to floodplains, says Maria E. Cabral, Assistant Secretary for Planning of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH). “Even with increased awareness of the risks, people will continue to live in hazard-prone areas.” “The provision of flood control structures is insufficient, mainly caused by insufficient b . ...

Today, 8 November 2014 we commemorate the first anniversary of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) as it hit the central Philippines. One year after this super typhoon devastated entire communities, German relief organizations continue to provide assistance, for example Malteser International. In the immediate aftermath of the typhoon, Malteser International from Germany distributed food, hygiene kits, water containers and relief items to about 9,000 families. A water treatment unit provided clean drinking water to an entire village. To date, 250 houses have been repaired, 52 large tents were set up as classrooms and play areas, and 800 families received tarpaulins. Malteser International distributed school materials to almost 2,500 school children as well as tools for cleanup and farming tools to the villagers. Over the past year, Malteser International, in partnership with the Philippine Association of the Order of Malta initiated a relief and recovery program with 4 communities on Samar and Bantayan Island affect ...

Sweet potato, a Resilient Crop By Estrella Z. Gallardo Sweet potato, locally known as camote, although heavily battered by strong winds and heavy rains during the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda was able to recover with newly developing shoots and leaves. Sweet potato, a known crisis crop during typhoons and calamities is relatively easy to grow. It also thrives in a variety of soil types and tolerates adverse conditions like strong winds and flood. Sweet potato can be easily propagated by either vine cuttings or from tuberous roots. Aside from being a short-maturing crop, sweet potato is considered “superfood”. It is rich in complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, manganese, potassium, beta carotene, Vitamin C, and Vitamin B6. The young leaves and shoots or “camote tops” can also be cooked and eaten as “green” or boiled as a source of a nutritious drink. Growing sweet potato is one of PCAARRD’s recommendations as an immediate food source for Typhoon Yolanda survivors. Clean planting materials (C ...
An extraordinary response to a different kind of ordinary: How the 'new normal' killed 'Hayahay' In the North Eastern part of Leyte, about 360 kilometers from Manila lies Tacloban City, the gateway to adventure east of Visayas. Not only do local and foreign visitors marvel at its pristine waters, they also take a tour of the past by visiting the historical structures located around the tourist circuit. Up until 2013, there was no way but up for the rapidly developing city. It was the stroke of fate in November of that year that changed the course of its history. It's been almost 7 months since Typhoon Yolanda hit the Visayas. My team and I were very lucky to have survived it. Kudos to my cameraman, Rollie Malicsi for being able to capture some of the best footage of the super typhoon. Our story of survival, together with that of storm chaser James Reynolds and his team, was featured on The Weather Channel's "Weather: Caught on Camera." It aired June 6th in the US. Sharing it now with those who weren't able to catch it. We didn't survive the storm for nothing though, we will definitely keep going back to Tacloban to report on the recovery. We will keep pushing our government and the international community to do more.
noynoy The writing is on the wall: “P-Noy” is losing support. As a result of the wrath of Typhoon Yolanda (aka “Haiyan”), Philippine President B.S. Aquino III has been exposed to the rest of the entire world as being irredeemably incompetent and even unconcerned about other people’s lives. He’s on his way out. The “Noynoy Project” is coming to a disastrous end. The selfish Filipino oligarchs who propped up the obviously incompetent B.S. Aquino III to run for president on a purely name-recall “platform” to win the 2010 presidential elections with the intention of having their monopolistic interests looked after by Noynoy’s administration will eventually have to answer for their crime. Make no mistake, folks — pushing him to run for the highest office knowing fully well that Noynoy Aquino is a completely incapable and unempathetic individual was an act of evil and utter selfishness. They got him into a position of immense responsibility when all he really wanted to do was to play vid ...

Poverty incidence in Iloilo rises by: Reymar Latoza The poverty incidence in the province of Iloilo posted an upward trend, recording 16.7% in 2009 to 20.8% six years after. This video is composed of footages of Honourable Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr's Priority Development Assistant Fund (PDAF) Projects and his humanitarian assistance for the people of Samar, Leyte and Tacloban who were terribly victimized by Typhoon Yolanda that until now this government is too busy politicking for six long months instead of creating a fast phase rehabilitation using the funds that were given by the international community that until now it didn't get there to be used. These are footages that the media NEVER showed to the people as proof of the senator's sincere effort for the betterment of our countrymen and NOT to steal the money of the people. He does not need that either for his personal use. The media were not even there when he inaugurated some of his PDAF projects that are already done. I've said many times already and yet I'll say it once again that "The Truth is like a Tiger. It will defend itself." LET IT DEFEND ITSELF. Action speaks louder by itself with or without the ...

Filipina wins British Foreign Office Top Award In a vote of her colleagues worldwide, Hannah Teh, a Consular Officer working in the British Embassy Manila won the top award for Excellence at an award ceremony in London on 14 May. Hannah who hails from Manila earned this for her dedicated work and excellence as part of the Embassy’s work in the aftermath of Super Typhoon Yolanda last November. Hannah was an enormous asset during the crisis effort following Typhoon Yolanda. In common with what the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs does during times of crisis to assist Philippine nationals, the Embassy had to find dozens of British nationals who were believed to be in the areas most affected by the typhoon and who had families and friends desperate for information. During the most difficult period, Hannah was on the ground in areas such as Tacloban showing leadership, networking skills, ingenuity and hard work. She was a credit to the Embassy in this most traumatic of situations. Ambassador Asif A . ...

Instead, President Benigno Aquino III announced the implementation of the no-build zone policy which prohibits structures 40 meters from the coastline in all Yolanda-affected areas. Presidential Assistance for Rehabilitation and Recovery (PARR) Secretary Panfilo Lacson, in pursuit of this directive, also recommended the creation of distinctions among what he calls as ‘Safe Zones, Unsafe Zones and No Dwelling Zones’ to be identified later. No-build zones would be classified as unsafe zones while unsafe zones needed for livelihood would be considered as ‘No Dwelling Zones.’ Still, the policy guideline has not been issued up until t ...

It has already been months since the Typhoon Yolanda hit many places in Visayas but victims of the calamity, who have lost their homes and loved ones, are still struggling. Though the lack of food, power, and stable shelter has been almost resolved, there are yet many problems that they need to deal with. One primary concern is the health condition of the people affected by Typhoon Yolanda. More than 30,000 families from Leyte and Samar have already fled and left Visayas and are now living and staying with their relatives or in temporary shelters in Metro Manila. Around 1,500 familes are in the ZOTO-KPML communities in Navotas. Most of these families requested health and medical services in their particular areas in order to facilitate continuous recovery from the disaster. Added to this number of Yolanda victims are survivors from the past typhoon Maring/Habagat who also encounter medical difficulties. In partnership with Samahan ng Mamamayan Zone One Tondo Organization (ZOTO) and Kongero ng Pagkakaisa n ...

He has his own charitable organization, the Arnel Pineda Foundation Inc. Titig Lawin is a regular / daily aerial photo survey to monitor the environment & assist disaster operations. After Typhoon Yolanda struck, several barrios were isolated from relief supply points. Familiar routes became impassable. Helicopters took time to arrive. Titig Lawin had it already been available could have surveyed alternative routes. Victims probably did not have to wait weeks before receiving aid. If a Titig Lawin can be larger & capable of payload, it can even distribute relief goods.
I've had little or no water into my bar/restaurant for 11weeks or since Typhoon Yolanda. Even I paid 14000 pesos for my own water line. You have followed the tree from the field to the mill, assessments and trainings, to distributions. Now see the tree become a shelter for families whose homes were destroyed by Typhoon Yolanda. It does not take long at all after a distribution of materials to see rebuilding happening all over a barangay. Here in the Philippines, having protection from both the sun and the rain is a definite need. Through this process and the many people involved, families all over barangays in Santa Fe and Tanauan are receiving homes to provide this protection.
Shelter remains one of the greatest needs on the island of Leyte since Typhoon Yolanda. If we read and analyze objectively the recent arrest of NDF consultants, Benito Tiamzon and Wilma Austria, and the long-standing clash between the Government of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines under the Communist Party of the Philippines, we can see stark contrasts between the Aquino government and the Tiamzon couple and the revolutionary movement they allegedly lead: 1. The Aquino government's criminal neglect have caused thousands of deaths and loss of livelihoods with the havoc of Typhoon Yolanda. Even after the typhoon, the government failed to make any concrete action and instead, implemented "No-build Zone" policies and left rehabilitation to big businessmen and compradors for their own profit-making. Aquino even allowed entry of around 5,000 US troops and nuclear powered war ships under the guise of 'relief operations.' In comparison, during the onset of the typhoon, the NPA immediately declared a 'cease fire' and focused all efforts in gathering support for the ...

FULL HOUSE ON THE FOURTH. The Board of Directors and Honorary Chairmen of the Association of Young Filipino-Chinese Entrepreneurs (Anvil Business Club) registered a full house during their very productive fourth regular board meeting for the year. Apart from the project-laden divisional reports rendered by the four Vice-Presidents, what made the meeting memorable was its formal MOA signing agreement with Rags2Riches, Inc. on its classroom rehabilitation donation for the Typhoon Yolanda victims in Tacloban City, as well as the firming up of plans for the Club's first-ever News and Lifestyle Magazine. Punishing schedules and a flurry of projects these past three months have not exhausted the great enthusiasm of the Board of Directors, as even bigger undertakings have been planned for the coming weeks. Partnerships with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce (Phils), Inc. have been given a welcome nod; exploratory talks for joint undertakings with the American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines an ...

World Bank Country Director Motoo Konishi said the US$8 billion reconstruction program launched recently by the government will reduce the negative impact of Typhoon Yolanda. This program, he said, will enable the country to build back better homes, schools, health facilities, utilities, infrastructure, and livelihoods destroyed by the super typhoon. “Over the comin ...
Aquino as “an awful manager” must be the understatement of the year. Aquino finally admitted his government was slow in its response to providing relief to Super Typhoon Yolanda survivors. His Social Welfare Secretary, Corazon “Dinky” Soliman, made matters worse by covering up government neglect by burying evidence of rotting relief goods.

On the 20 of February 2014, I was able to speak with a co-worker by the name of Vanessa Berino in Sam Pran, Nakhon Pathom Thailand. She is from Dagami, Leyte in the Philippines. Vanessa provided me with firsthand information about her home back in the Philippines. Dagami, a town near the mountains, about 32 kilometers from Tacloban. Was destroyed by the storms following Typhoon Yolanda. Vanessa told me that 100% of the houses in her town are roofless. There have been major floods that destroyed many resources such as food, clothes, and electronics. Vanessa visited her family in Dagami a little over a week ago, and said that since her first visit in December, there had only been a little to no improvement of her town. Schools were destroyed, roofs ripped off leaving all of the students and supplies soaked. Vanessa’s sister worked at an elementary government school in town that was one of schools extremely damaged by the storm. The school had an IT room that provided seven computers and a projector to be ...
On Sunday, March 2nd, Radyo Migrante will revisit the disastrous event that hit Eastern Visayas in the Philippines; the Typhoon Yolanda situation. It has been more than 100 days since Typhoon Yolanda (international name Haiyan) destroyed most parts of Eastern Visayas. Numerous sentiments of fellow Filipinos in the region have been complaining about how the Philippine government under President BS “Noynoy” Aquino not providing them any assistance, despite of the humanitarian aid they received from different countries around the world. On top of that, the Philippine President has P1 trillion worth of Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF), also known as Pork Barrel. Could’ve this money been used for relief and rehabilitation of Yolanda survivors? How does Yolanda destruction connected to the Pork Barrel issue? To help us discuss the matter is Retired United Church of Canada Minister Bob McElhinney. He went to the Philippines after Yolanda hit the region, and we’ll speak with us with his experie ...

Weeks after Typhoon Yolanda hit Tacloban City, a video of an Indian Prophet became a viral all over the social media. It was all about 'Warnings for the Philippines.' First, an earthquake; Second, a typhoon that will devastate Leyte; Third, a mysterious illness/disease that will spread all over Pangasinan. Now, we just heard about the third prophecy on Bandila. Could these things be real? Whatever belief we have as of now, let us just be one in Praying for our Nation. Let's exercise our faith in Him. :)

And now for a semi-good story. I was given a number to call so I can request for airlifts for the critical care survivors during the Florida bus crash in Bontoc. Someone gave me a number saying "ito, sundalo, si Manny - matutulungan ka niyan, kilala mo yan." So I call this number late late at night to guarantee that a ride will come and fly sila Abby Sicam, Mylo Cabardo, and the rest to hospitals in Manila. I bugged him and was a bit stern and firm, told him, "Sir, aasahan ko yang helicopter ha ng 5am sa Bontoc." And he was really listo and said, "Yes Ma'am, I guarantee it." I even name dropped a Colonel (Zagala) whom I was calling and who helped us during Typhoon Yolanda and said if wala doon ang chopper, tatawagan ko ang Colonel. And he said, "Ay sige, Ma'am pero ako rin ang tatawagan ni Colonel." So that was that. True enough, when we got to Bontoc, the Air Force was there, available, willing, efficient. They flew everyone as best they could. Done and done. I was so grateful. So I msgd Manny the s ...
