Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Luzviminda Ilagan urged action anew on the People’s Mining Bill as she joined indigenous peoples group Kalipunan ng mga Katutubong Mamamayan ng PIlipinas (KAMP) in their commemoration of World Environment Day held at the Baclaran church today. “The Mining Act of 1995, in all of its nineteen years of allowing liberalized, large-scale and corporate mining has brought massive destruction to the lives and lands of indigenous communities. The call to repeal the Mining Act and in its stead, enact a People’s Mining Bill that puts premium on the preservation of our resources and the welfare of our people, is urgent and imperative,” said Ilagan. “The destructive impact of large scale mining is evident not just in Marcopper in Marinduque and Philex in Benguet. More and more areas are now experiencing massive landslides because of mining operations and as a result, communities have become increasingly vulnerable to typhoons and disasters. This was the exper ...

Thousands of typhoon survivors from Barug Katawhan and Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) commemorate the first anniversary of the people’s power during the four straight days of organized barricade and legitimate confiscation, February 25 of last year at the DSWD XI office in Davao City calling for the release of 10,000 sack of rice as promised by Sec. Dinky Soliman during the first barricade at Montevista, Compostela Valley on 2013. According to the group, the US-Aquino administration continues to fail the Filipinos in addressing their need for thorough relief and rehabilitation in times of typhoons and other calamities in the Philippines. Funds and goods, which were intended for the victims, were corrupted and seized by the military. Up to now, victims of Typhoon Pablo are still in distress; hardly coping with the government’s sluggish act upon devastation of lives and livelihood in Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental areas.

DAVAO DEL NORTE, January 30, 2014 (PIA) – The province of Davao del Norte emerged sturdier after successfully getting over the economic and climatic high winds of 2013. Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario said the province managed to perform well even as it reeled from the effects of Super Typhoon Pablo late in 2012 and the series of low pressure areas in the first quarter of last year. The Governor recalled the province, which literally wallowed in floodwaters, incurred some P4.6 billion losses in agriculture and infrastructures in the aftermath of Pablo alone. Yet, del Rosario said external funding, such as those coming from the national government and the official development assistance (ODA), bolstered up the P905-million budget of the province last year bankroll. He added the economic resilience of the Dabaonons and the private sector also fueled the financial dexterity of the province, bankrolling the P.E.O.P.L.E. development thrust of the governor. “The economic resili ...

Last 2012, Davao Oriental had faced Typhoon Pablo and I could not abnegate the fact that it caused so much distress in the province. And today, I am again worried about the landfall threat Agaton may bring to my homeland because I know all victims have not moved on still. It hurts to never really know what's coming. A small wave, or maybe a big one, or a cyclone. All we can really do is hope that when it comes, we can surf over it, instead of drown in its monstrosity. Let us just pray.

My dear Colleagues, Once again, the current weather disturbance is causing havoc in the areas devastated by Typhoon Pablo over a year ago. Last January 2012, we were able to extend material assistance to the areas through the relief goods we brought to them. And they are very grateful to UP Mindanao for this. Yesterday, a group of "balyans" (Mandaya priestesses) from Baganga and Caraga Davao Oriental is begging for help from us. Through Prof. Manny Nabayra (Social Sciences Department), the balyans expressed the hardship they are experiencing at the moment especially in Brgy. Kasunugan, upper Baganga River. They said "...kusog kaayo ang ulan...naglandslide na, nangadaut mga tanum, nangaguba ang tulay ug ang Logging Road (connecting their sitio to other areas in Baganga)". They are specifically asking for food and medicine. I would like to take this opportunity to extend this call for help for our friends in Baganga and Caraga. Ten flights to various cities in Mindanao were also cancelled due to bad weather.

This commitment which is now of its second time starting last year is a manifestation of thanksgiving, we being a lucky recipient of God's saving help that during the typhoon Pablo, in God's mercy, we were being spared from what I supposed then an impending destruction which I believed to have occurred when a very big branch of the mango tree at our house had fallen down, as it has to separate from the principal branch due to a strong wind of Pablo, right straight to the center of our house through the roof. Crisis will come. It is one of life's givens. How we face crisis though will determine whether we will come out of it whole or severely crippled. Last night during the newscast i read the news about the devastating floods in Davao Oriental. The same areas, plus more, devastated by typhoon Pablo. Looking at the images, i thought - what can we really do? The images also brought back memories of our own crises. We are no strangers to calamities both manmade and natural. We live in Marikina City, specifically Barangay Malanday. We got hit by Ondoy. Just a few weeks after, we got robbed. Burglars entered our house and stole our laptops and phones and other little things. Good thing we do not really own valuable things like jewelry, but they stole all the gadgets and equipment we use for work. And the worse part? It happened twice. The first time, while we were asleep, the second time while we were shuttling from our house to the hospital because of a medical crisis. The second one happened even while we were s ...

This is it ,beginning of this year in my hometown Compostela Valley, this bridge just back of our house in Poblacion. Last Dec. 4, 2012 Typhoon Pablo visited my hometown left people suffering by huge calamity .Now, just 4 days non stop and strong rain you can see water around the Valley, hundreds of people hungry and famillies now in evacuation places for their safety. Many of us and farmers are not yet fully recover for huge devastation and trials we encountered in our place. Those who left Compostela who work for a living around the globe worried with our famillies and their Children back home. We need strong Faith and Prayers that God Forgive us what we have done and have Mercy on us. Help us Lord ,we don't need more Sendong,Pablo, Yolanda or what other names will visit in our Country.
Sometimes you just can't tell someone how you feel, you can never really find the right words to make them understand :)
Thank you Lord for all the blessings. :)goodnight ...
Update from Tom: The team are stranded near Monkayo (about 30 kms where they helped the typhoon Pablo victims rebuild their homes). It looks like we will be sleeping on the side of the road in the van tonight. No pension house and lots of others are stranded too. Both roads to Davao are flooded and too deep to be passed. We have to wait for the water to recede. We really, really appreciate your prayers.

HAPPENING: Poblacion Montevista is submerged in waist-deep floodwaters. Commenting FB netizens reported that at 7 AM today the Montevista-Compostela road is not passable ats Manat river overflows since yesterday. Some had their longest darkest hours to wait for the morning's light dawn today amid the brownout since yesterday. Montevista's barangays Poblacion, Banagbanag and New Visayas are submerged with high waters, while the Gabi area, just near Compostela poblacion has been crept on with floodwaters. By that, Compostela poblacion is surely flooded, too. RUN still has to source info from posts of netizens from New Bataan, the worst-hit town of typhoon Pablo. (Rural Urban News)

Protest Aquino's antipeople big business projects in calamity areas--CPP Information Bureau Communist Party of the Philippines January 09, 2014 The Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) called on the Filipino people, especially the victims of the supertyphoon Yolanda and other calamities last year to expose and wage mass protests against the antipeople programs and big business projects of the Aquino regime misrepresented as "rehabilitation." The CPP issued this statement amid public outcries over the reported overpricing and use of substandard materials in the construction of bunkhouses being built by the Aquino government. The Aquino government has hired private contractors to build at least 222 bunkhouses, the design and specifications of which have been criticized by architects and planners as subhuman and below international standards. Each bunkhouse, costing nearly P1 million each, is to be divided into 12 units of 8 meters square each, described as big enough only for two large tables. The CPP p ...

FINALLY! One of the best thing we could do while we are still here on this planet is to INVEST ON THE LIVES OF OTHERS. It is a sure investment that will be rewarded not only while we're here, but also in eternity. This year, through our partners, we'll be launching our feeding program on Monday, January 13-14 which will benefit the undernourished, malnourished and underweight children in five towns of the Province of Davao Oriental esp. those who live in typhoon Pablo-hit areas. It's quiet a huge project but I know it will make God smile. Jesus said that if we truly love Him, we'll FEED HIS SHEEP. Thanks to all of you who prayed with us and supports us in this great endeavor!

IFRC - World Disaster Report is out Technology and humanitarian action Introduction In 2012, fewer people were reported to have died or been affected as a result of disasters than any other year during the previous decade, according to figures presented in this report. While these numbers are positive news, they also reflect the absence of major events like the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar in 2008 or the 2010 Haiti earthquake. We have learned from these major disasters. At the same time we must continue to improve and innovate to make disaster preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery more effective and accountable. With these objectives in mind, this year’s World Disasters Report focuses on the rapid spread of technologies, especially information and communication technologies, which is changing humanitarian action and humanitarians, too. The changes are most evident in highly technological environments, such as megacities, or when disasters affect critical infrastructures ...

Sleeping only 3 hours a day since typhoon Pablo landed in her southernmost province, Gov. Malanyaon has delivered food, water and relief to all the barangays and sitios of the 3 towns. She was also able to get volunteer doctors from neighboring provinces and Davao City to come and attend to the needs of the injured. She braved to cross the rivers with the bridges destroyed to reach the isolated towns. She reported in an interview over DZRJ-AM last Sunday that they have done 4 rounds of giving food and water but the province is prepared to extend food aid for 6 months. Typhoon stories breaks my heart, all the time. October 2009, I was one month post-partum (bag-ong pananak kay ate AC), I kept crying as i watch TV updates about the tragedy bought by Typhoon Ondoy (international name Ketsana) to our fellow Filipinos, and also on December 2012's Typhoon Pablo (Bopha) when I was also one month post-partum (with baby Coy). I thought it was so O.A. of me. My motherly instincts, the hormonal explosions and all that post-partum blues caused me to FEEL the agony of those who are severely affected (destroyed houses, missing friends & relatives, carrying own dead children and all) AAAYYY! So tragic. And now, with Super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan), even at one YEAR post-partum, grabe pa rin emote2 ko. I feel guilty for feelin' very lucky that my family & relatives are not affected, but super naaawa ako sa mga walang makain, ma-inom, matutulugan and sa ma namatayan!! Sorry I can't watch TV news na. God isn't in the belfries. One's faith isn't bound up in the crumbling ruins of an old colonial regime. Let them crumble. The Church is in the people whose lives are crushed daily on the streets (earthquake or no), in the fields, in slums, in war zones, workplaces and market stalls, in Bohol, everywhere. Let all the belfries in the world collapse and the bells stop tolling. Maybe only then a broken people that has lost all sense of itself, and has lost all sense of its own history, can see what their faith is truly all about. So no, Danding, God didn't let you or La Salle win, only to allow this tragedy to happen on the very next day. The god you and your kind worship is up in the clouds, detached from reality, and concerns himself with old buildings and the petty concerns of kings. The man nailed on the cross had the cries of that little girl crushed by a falling belfry in mind when he commanded thus: Love, and set the slave free. So before we start agonizing over 300-year-old churches, endangered tarsie ...

Free Kim Gargar now! October 17, 2013 at 5:11am (A Repost from Catherine Abon) Kuya Kim is a friend of mine. He was still in Netherlands when I came to Potsdam for my studies as well so he decided to give me a visit. Kuya Kim came to Potsdam one beautiful summer of July 2012. I offered to pick him up in Potsdam main station (Hbf)and he said that I should because he does not want to get lost in Potsdam. I was giddy with excitement that when I saw him in Hbf I called to him "Kuya Kiiimmm!!" as I fling my arms around to give him a tight embrace. He met me with his signature cheerful smile- a smile that is fulfilled with a graceful squinting of the eyes that will never fail to make you smile in return. He then started complaining about the heat and how much he had sweated. And I blamed it to the polo shirt he is wearing and I contested that he was not sweating, he was raining. I rarely see Kuya Kim dress in formal clothes like that. He is usually in his plain shirt particularly those with ca ...

Davao Typhoon Pablo was the worst disaster in 100years in the province. Zamboanga Conflict & Floods.Typhoon Maring. Santi.Bohol Earthquake.
Last December, days before Super Typhoon Pablo hit the Philippines, all the provinces in his possible path were forewarned to take the necessary steps to save life and property. Filipinos that we are, everybody prayed that God would spare us the destruction. Sadly, it was Davao Oriental that received the brunt of Pablo's fury.the devastation and death was nightmarish! Then came the flood of senseless postings here in FB. One catholic person proudly claimed that his town was spared because of his fervent prayers...because God listened to his prayers. How stupid is that??? Don't you think the catholics in Davao prayed just as fervently? People of any religion or culture will make stupid remarks (even people of your own kind). Instead of wishing them dead, let us remember Jesus when he said, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing". I hope I made my point clear to all the haters out there. TOGETHER, let us pick up the pieces and rebuild our beloved country.
“GOD IS NOT ANGRY WITH US!”: SANE AND SOBER REFLECTIONS ON THE RECENT EARTHQUAKE CALAMITY By: Prof. Henry Francis B. Espiritu I am very much appalled of hearing comments on radio, TV and even in social media made by over-enthusiastic religionists and by those “good-and-holy-Pharisees” harping their judgmental and idiotically far-off views that God is truly mad with the world/Philippines due to its sins; and that His divine wrath was the reason why He sent calamities and typhoons as the Philippine’s fair punishment in disobeying Him! Seriously, as believers in God do you really think God to be very petty, onion-skinned and cruelly narcissistic? I honestly throw this question to us who are believers and lovers of God: Do you really believe in God’s divine vindictiveness? Why do some religionists entertain thoughts like these and thereby indirectly accusing God of being cruel and malevolent just to bring home his “holier-than-thou” judgmentalisms? This view is not just medieval but insanely c ...

In my hometown, as a teenager, I used to participate in the "Pabulíg." It is an old practice by the natives of my hometown province (Davao Oriental) in which the rice farm owner invites the villagers or the community to participate during the rice harvest and have their own percentage of share (binuligan) from the harvested rice. In essence, pabulíg is a participatory and communal act where the villagers can get their respective shares of harvest from their neighbors’ crops. When the harvest is done, a festivity will follow to be participated by the whole village or community. (Danny Castillones Sillada, Pabulig: A Communal Rice Harvest)
So much to catch up on here since returning to the Philippines less than 2 weeks ago - after being in the U.S. for 4 months, especially since last year and the beginning of this year was already in a state of flux and flurry as we put our regular work on hold to help the survivors of Typhoon Pablo/Bopha. First priority (after assessing the state of things here - the team has done an awesome job in our absence) being given to the interns ( Carlie Weisheit and Clint Kroeker ) who returned with me to work with us for 5 weeks - and preparing for the arrival of a group from Bethesda Mennonite Church (Nebraska) next week. Carlie and Clint are out this week with the Reach Team teaching First Aid to about 50 Muslim people in partnership with the government of Sarangani Prov. Today I've totally drenched (in sweat & dirt) two shirts as I've attacked the kitchen cabinets upstairs here at the Reach Homebase (yesterday it was other closets) trying to bring the accumulated dust and dirt and organization back in check. ...
