Why Jonathan Will Win By Reno Omokri My dear brothers and sisters, a number of you have asked many questions, particularly on Social Media, why President Goodluck Jonathan deserves your vote. I will use this space to answer that question headlong and unequivocally, because I believe with every fiber of my being that reelecting President Jonathan is the best course of action that Nigerians can take if we do not want to go back to the old ways in which the government dictated to us rather than related to us. Everything about the emergence of President Jonathan as the candidate of the PDP shows his party and it's candidate as the only truly national candidate. The National Convention in the Federal Capital Territory, which is known as the 'Center of Unity' was auspicious and befitting as the PDP is the only political party that projects one united and indivisible Nigeria. Nigerians can take pride in the PDP and its pan Nigerian credentials. The party does not have regional bases. The whole nation is its base ...

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives’ Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), on Tuesday gained an unusual support as the Islamic Terrorist group in the Northeast, Boko Haram, pledged its total support for the former military ruler. Boko Haram, in a lengthy press statement circulated through email by its spokesperson and a copy made available to The Nation Newspaper, Abubakar Shekau, anchored its decision on the need to deliver Nigeria, especially the northern region, from the crunching effects of poverty, underdevelopment and insecurity. It also lamented the unconcerned attitude of the President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration at the unrelenting degradation of the northern region environment, taking a hard stance also on the increasing insecurity in the northeast. President Jonathan, according to Boko Haram, does not deserve a second term in office. The Islamic terrorist group also commended Buhari for proposing to stabilize the oil market and scrap the office of the First Lady ...
COVER SUBJECT The Poison of Government Corruption Government corruption has been defined as the abuse of public power for private gain. Such abuse has a long history. For example, the Bible includes a law prohibiting bribery in judicial cases, showing that the practice was already well-known over 3,500 years ago. (Exodus 23:8) Of course, corruption involves more than just accepting bribes. Corrupt public officials sometimes appropriate goods, take advantage of services to which they are not entitled, or even steal funds outright. They may also use their position to favor their friends and relatives unfairly. While corruption can exist in any human organization, it seems that corruption in government is the worst. The 2013 Global Corruption Barometer, published by Transparency International, reported that people worldwide have the perception that the five most corrupt institutions are political parties, the police, public officials, the legislature, and the judiciary. Consider just some reports that highli ...

China slips in Transparency International corruption index - Financial Times
Olusegun Obasanjo a founding member of Transparency International? 😂😂😂😂 TI obviously did not do their due diligence.
So, what is the problem??? "Nigeria is not quite the most corrupt country on earth. But according to Transparency International, which monitors international financial corruption, it is not far off — coming a shameful 172nd worst among the 215 nations surveyed. Only countries as dysfunctional, derelict and downright dangerous as Haiti or the Congo are more corrupt. In theory, Nigeria’s 170 million-strong population should be prospering in a country that in recent years has launched four satellites into space and now has a burgeoning space programme. Moreover, Nigeria is sitting on crude oil reserves estimated at 35 billion barrels (enough to fuel the entire world for more than a year), not to mention 100 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. It also manages to pay its legislators the highest salaries in the world, with a basic wage of £122,000, nearly double what British MPs earn and many hundreds of times that of the country’s ordinary citizens. No wonder the ruling elite can afford luxury homes in ...
Garvey Ufot PDP: TIME TO QUIT THE OBASANJO CIRCUS (3) In the last two instalments of this essay, I attempted an indepth examination of the issue of Obasanjo's corruption allegations against President Jonathan. With the evidence of the latest report of Transparency International concerning Nigeria, as well as a comparative analysis of the corruption index during Obasanjo's eight year tenure, I demonstrated that accusations of corruption against President Jonathan are borne out of self serving insanity and senility on the part of the former President, and ethnic mischief on the part of other APC sympathisers. In this instalment I shall endeavour to dwell exclusively on Obasanjo's criticisms against the President on security matters. In all the attacks that President Jonathan has had the misfortune to endure from members of Nigeria's opposition and their supporters, it is in the matter of the President's handling of the Boko Haram madness that I am sometimes convinced that God has probably taken leave of Nig ...

SHINE YOUR EYES...APC Tells Nigerians (Full Text Of Odigie Oyegun's Press Conference) PRESS BRIEFING BY THE NATIONAL CHAIRMAN OF THE ALL PROGRESSIVES’ CONGRESS (APC), CHIEF JOHN ODIGIE-OYEGUN THURSDAY, 4TH DECEMBER, 2014 Gentleman of the Press, 1. Today, I want to continue the conversation with the good people of Nigeria as promised in my last press briefing and discuss what the All Progressives Congress (APC) plans to do when it comes into government. The subject this morning is corruption; its ill effects on our country and the program of action of an APC led administration to combat it. Corruption as defined by Transparency International and accepted by the APC is “the abuse of entrusted power for private gain”. Corruption can manifest in both public and private sectors, but its ill effects are more damaging in the public sphere because the power of government and its officials to affect the welfare of citizens is generally more far reaching. Corruption in the public sector is a threat to nationa ...

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo came out last week, puffing, huffing and hurling. He took a bazooka, aimed it and fired at the heart of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration. It was certainly neither a good day nor good luck for the president, the day Obasanjo detonated his ‘letter bomb.’ In a lengthy letter, all of 18 pages, Obasanjo shattered the glass windows of the present government, inviting all Nigerians to have an eye feast of what’s going on in the corridors, living section and bedroomof the Jonathan government. He told of an administration, crawling with monsters of corruption and a spineless leadership unwilling and incapable of halting the rot; he spoke of a government that had reduced what ought to be national governance, to a village square gathering of clansmen and tribesmen; he talked about a president consumed by blind ambition to continue in office, when it had become apparent that he lacked what it took to preside over a vast and complex nation like ours, even as he cl ...

Pakistan, Somalia, North Korea, and Iraq are the only countries ahead of Philippines. “Philippines has a dysfunctional government when it comes to corruption”, the report said. The report listed the “Pork Barrel Scam” as the biggest single scam scandal in Asia in the last 10 years which involves an estimated amount of $222.7M (P10B). Further details reveal that an estimated 40% of the P2.265T 2014 budget signed by Aquino will likely end up to politicians’ pockets. While praising Budget 2015 and calling it a good budget, Ku Li said that the problem is corruption and that he is malu because Malaysia was called World Champion in Corruption by the Wall Street Journal in Dec 2012. found it very strange so I did a little digging. After the release of the 2012 world-wide Consumer Perceptions Index by Transparency International, there were propaganda pieces floating around saying Malaysia is most corrupt country in the world. Turns out that this is based on ONE question in a Gallup Malaysia survey called the "Bribe payers survey 2012"". The question asked was: “During the last 12 months, do you think that your company has failed to win a contract or gain new business because a competitor has paid a bribe?” 50% answered "YES". This was in the second half of 2012 where Pakatan propaganda in Malaysia was at its maximum as GE13 was nearing. How did you expect most people who were under propaganda to answer? FIGHTING CORRUPTION: ANOTHER WAY TO FIGHT POVERTY AND EBOLA By Abubakarr Turay The simple message from Transparency International (TI) to world leaders gathered at the United Nations to discuss the future of the world’s development last year was: “You need to fight corruption to win the battle against poverty.” According to the anti-graft watchdog, the governance issues of providing basic social amenities like health centres, schools, pipe-borne water and good roads can hardly be achieved without a robust fight against corruption. In other words it is no longer a secret that a robust fight against corruption is synonymous with a fight to end poverty and diseases. Many studies have proved this. The British Prime Minister (PM) David Cameron while addressing the United Nations Security Council during the 69th UN General Assembly in New York on September 24th 2014, stressed the need for world leaders to put more efforts in the fight against corruption in order to end poverty. For the British PM, the mor ...

Chenda Claims Credit for TIZ K3.3 Million Graft Exposure Local government minister Emmanuel Chenda has moved to claim credit for the expose by Transparency International Zambia over the K3.3 million theft scandal at the Ministry of Local Government and Housing. TIZ recently blew the whistle over the looting of K3.3 million Constituency Development Funds in two constituencies and have since prompted the Drug Enforcement Commission to restrict some properties and freeze accounts. Executive Director Goodwell Lungu said six officers had been sent on leave but lamented the big shots at the ministry that included two Permanent Secretaries had been spared punishment with investigative officers dilly dallying over the matter. However, Chenda who has been quiet until Transparency International revealed the theft said that government had been aware of the theft and had alerted the investigative wings. “We were aware of this incident, it is not correct that TIZ is the one who unearthed the scandal we were on top o ...
BOTSWANA!!! copied dis An M&G investigation has revealed President Ian Khama's extensive use of the Botswana state to establish a far-reaching network built on patronage. President Ian Khama has a close-knit circle of supporters. (Pako Lesejane) Nepotism in President Ian Khama’s administration is a sensitive issue in Botswana, which, with Swaziland, is thought to have the highest unemployment rate in the world. Khama (59), who has been president for four years and was vice- president for 10 years before that, has concentrated enormous power in his hands. One of his close relatives, Ramadeluka Seretse, is the minister in charge of the defence force, police, intelligence services and the law enforcement machinery. So far, the president’s cronyism has escaped the attention of international corruption watchers. In terms of corruption, Botswana is ranked 32 out of 182 countries by Transparency International, the highest-placed nation in Africa. South Africa is way down the list, at 64. For four decades the ...

Abacha's Loot & Mohammed's Deal 03 July 2014 By Olusegun Adeniyi; Email; olusegun.adeniyi Apparently taken aback by what it considered a crooked deal by the Federal Government, Transparency International (TI) has described the withdrawal of charges against Mr. Mohammed Abacha as an act of encouraging impunity. A statement by its Regional Director for sub-Saharan Africa, Chantal Uwimana, said: “Allowing the theft of public funds to go unpunished sends the wrong message that those with powerful connections can act with impunity. The case should have been fully prosecuted and the government has not given adequate reasons for dropping the charges. Corruption is widespread in Nigeria and despite claims by the government to make tackling corruption a priority too few people have been held to account for a series of high profile scandals.” Given the way this administration has treated (with levity) the challenge of corruption in our country, it is very easy to understand the basis of the damaging statement b ...

Sam Koim, weak-kneed Aussie politicians & rumours of treason Sam KoimKEITH JACKSON ON Thursday, with anti-corruption protests in full swing in Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby’s rumour mill was running in overdrive and belching the smoke of conspiracy theories. One of the most lurid of these was that Sam Koim, the sacked head of corruption-busting Task Force Sweep, was to be arrested on his return from Australia that day and charged with treason. Mr Koim had been in Australia as a guest of Transparency International and during his trip he had meetings with senior Australian officials and foreign minister Julie Bishop and appeared on one of the country’s most influential current affairs television programs. Bishop had subsequently issued a statement cautioning against political instability in PNG while totally ignoring the pernicious issue of high level corruption and the related sidelining of officials like Koim who were trying to do something about it. It was a low point in Australia’s often cloth-ea ...

“WHY INVESTORS MUST CONSIDER BOTSWANA” - REMARKS BY BOTSWANA'S HIGH COMMISSIONER TO KENYA, JOHN MORETI, AT TODAY’S INVESTMENT SEMINAR IN NAIROBI If you consider the population of just 10 of the 14 Southern African countries (in SADC) namely Botswana, SA, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Swaziland, Angola, Zambia, Malawi and Tanzania, which was approximately 164 million in 2012, and take into account that babies born in that year are now just over 2 years old and about to start pre-school (meaning there will now be increased expenses on these toddlers), as well as the birth of many others after 2012, there is no doubt that Botswana sits at the heart of one of the biggest and dynamic regional markets in the continent. Add to that all the advantages Botswana enjoys as a destination for investors which have been highlighted by international organisations, including credit rating agencies, Transparency International, and others and you will wonder just why you are not getting on a plane to Gaborone to further ...
Stop Targeting Hungarian NGOs! Since its re-election, the Hungarian government has launched a campaign attacking the credibility of Hungarian NGOs. The government is striving to gain control power over the funding distributed to NGOs by independent organisations not affiliated with the Hungarian government. We believe that a dynamic and independent civil society plays a fundamental role in a democratic society, as it is one of the key checks and balances to power. As demonstrated by the new laws introduced in Russia, the harassment of the civil sector could easily lead to the criminalisation of NGOs and could effectively hinder their work. We stand in solidarity with the Hungarian NGOs and call on the Hungarian and all other governments to refrain from harassing civil society. The above statement is a joint action by several Transparency International chapters to show solidarity with Hungarian civil society.

Youth face “integrity crisis” - Release from Transparency International Fiji. (28 May 2014) YOUNG people in Fiji and the Asia-Pacific region face an “integrity crisis” as this large population group enters the education system and the workplace, Transparency International (TI) Fiji warned in a statement issued in Suva today. TI Fiji says that a survey conducted in four (4) countries of the region shows that many young people and adults alike see institutions in their countries as being affected by corruption, and many have experienced corruption themselves. “The young people have high standards of integrity,” TI Fiji said, “and an overwhelming number of young people believe they have a role to play in fighting corruption. “However, a worrying number of young people believe that in order to succeed in life, they have to compromise their values and conform to the current status quo. “As these big youth populations enter the education system and workforce, we are facing an integrity crisis. ...
NEWS UPDATE; GOV'T LAUNCHES APP TO TRACK CORRUPTION; The battle against corruption has taken a new dimension with the development of a web based application that will be used to track government revenues and expenditures. The application is part of the Action for Transparency project, a brainchild of Transparency International, Uganda Media Development Foundation, Swedish partners and the ministry of Finance. Launching the application at Wakiso district headquarters, Prime Minister Amama Patrick Mbabazi called for more efforts to fight corruption. The project will enable citizens in Uganda and Zambia, another country where it is to be implemented, to report suspected corruption and misuse of public funds using the World Wide Web and a special mobile telephony tool. The application gives an opportunity for anyone who can connect to the internet to report on suspected corruption or mismanagement of public funds.

Johannesburg - Corruption in Africa is no different to corruption anywhere else on the planet, according to a new book by the former chair of graft watchdog Transparency International. The image of Africa as a continent beset by corruption has dominated the popular imagination for decades, reinforced by its consistently dismal performance in anti-corruption league tables. From routine demands for bribes by policemen to grand scale looting of state funds by its rulers, corruption has been blamed for stunting Africa's growth, keeping millions in poverty and scaring off investors. But now may be the time for international investors especially to reconsider their perceptions. In Global Corruption: Money, Power and Ethics in the Modern World, Laurence Cockcroft argues that the main drivers of corruption, including the informal economy, political funding, the role of multinationals and organised crime, are common to many countries and graft is not intrinsic to Africa. "The pattern of corruption which occurs in ...

The Facts About Corruption In Kenya While a certain level of corruption goes on in every country, corruption in Kenya is a particularly large problem. The average urban Kenyan has to pay 16 bribes a month to get his regular affairs arranged. This page contains the facts. As a foreign visitor or tourist, you'll see little to nothing of corruption. It's not something to worry about. The following information is simply provided for those who are interested in Kenya, or who run into this subject as a course of their work (students, journalists, development workers, etc.). Kenya's International Ranking In the 2008 Corruption Perceptions Index, issued by the anti-corruption organization Transparency International, Kenya ranks 147th out of 180 countries, meaning 146 countries are supposed to be less corrupt than Kenya, and 33 countries are more corrupt. Niger-River Basin Oil Belongs To All Of Us--Dr. Peregrino Brimah New York[RR] JIGAWA--Many of us have been inspired by the speech given by a former Minister, and co-founder of Transparency International, Ms Obiageli (Oby) Ezekwesili a.k.a. “Madam due process,” at the APC summit which held in Abuja, March 6th, 2014. I will put my full support behind her or any candidate like her for the Presidency of Nigeria in 2015. A particular line reverberates in my mind. In “The Uncomfortable Truth…,” she quoted George Orwell who said, “In a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act”. Indeed, the truth sets you free. I hope we can all be revolutionists in this sense. I hope we can all be brave enough to speak the truth whether we fear that we stand to be negatively impacted by so doing. The government of Sierra Leone together with African Mineral has been on the media condemning Human Rights Watch report on the state of mining in the country .Office of government spokesman has called the report "damming but not credible ". I think government position is absolutely wrong. What government should be doing at this stage is to look at recommendations of the report for possible implementation. Remember Mr. Government, Human Rights Watch workings around the world are very credible in the eyes ' of the west. This was the same position you took last year when Transparency International published its report on bribery and corruption in which Sierra Leone scores 84% (highest in the world) .
