Adam Green of the PCCC pointed out when Landrieu was handily defeated by some hack GOP nonentity Saturday that the last of the Democrats from the Republican wing of the Democratic Party who prevented the public option in the Affordable Care Act-- the others being Joe Lieberman, Ben Nelson and Blanche Lincoln-- had all been driven from office within 4 years; I think he left out Mark Pryor-- but he also lost his Senate seat last month. Good riddance to all of them. Take a look at the ProgressivePunch lifetime crucial vote scores of the half dozen Democratic Senators who have voted the most frequently against progressive values in the current session: • Tom Carper (DE)- 72.30 • Claire McCaskill (MO)- 72.13 • Kay Hagan (NC)- 70.67 defeated • Mark Pryor (AR)- 66.50 defeated • Mary Landrieu (LA)- 65.42 defeated • Joe Manchin (WV)- 61.75 - See more at:

Politics Home Executive Senate House of Representatives Defense Judiciary Scandals REGULATION Social Security paid $1.3B in potentially improper disability payments, report says. The Social Security Administration made $1.3 billion in potentially improper disability payments to people who were believed to be employed when they were supposed to be unable to work, according to a Government Accountability Office report released Friday. The Government Accountability Office estimated that the agency made the potential cash benefit overpayments to about 36,000 individuals from December 2010 to January 2013. The numbers represent less than 1 percent of beneficiaries and less than 1 percent of disability payments made during the time frame. But GAO said the overpayments reveal weaknesses in Social Security's procedures for policing the system. The precise number of individuals who received improper disability payments and the exact amount of improper payments made to those recipients cannot be determined without ...

Delighted that US Senator Tom Carper stopped by Parke Green Galleries today. I tried to not talk his ear off but...
WHAT A DAY! No walk because of the rain and that kind of makes me blue, but then something great happened. I was able to catch Rodney the Guinea Pig. He is now in a large tub with hay and food and water in the spare bathroom. Now what do I do? It would be nice to fine a family to take him in. Has been through a lot in the last 6 weeks or so, fending for himself outside. Although I provide food and water and a temporary house, I know he was cold and unhappy and probably very frightened. At the Parke Green Gallery things were happening. Senator Tom Carper came by and Mayor Carey and it was nice to see him and tell the Senator about the concept of Parke Green Galleries and The Delaware Store. Looking forward to turkey tomorrow and being busy on Friday. Come on by!

The Postal Service Outrage February 10, 2013 Dave Johnson You are probably hearing that the Post Office is “in crisis” and is cutting back Saturday delivery, laying people off, closing offices, etc. Like so many other “crises” imposed on us lately, there is a lot to the story that you are not hearing from the “mainstream” media. (Please click that link.) The story of the intentional destruction of the U.S. Postal Service is one more piece of the story of crisis-after-crisis, all manufactured to advance the strategic dismantling of our government and handing over the pieces to billionaires. Here are a few things you need to know about the Postal Service “crisis”: The Postal Service is the second largest employer in the United States after Walmart. But unlike Walmart, which gets away with paying so little that employees qualify for government assistance, the Postal Services is unionized, pays reasonable wages and benefits and receives no government subsidies. (Good for them!) Republicans hav ...

Tea Party House Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), the richest man in Congress with a net worth of $448 million, heads the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. (KSBW.com, Dec. 27, 2011) Issa is the congressional pitbull most insistent on passing postal privatization. Issa’s HR2748 bill would end Saturday delivery, replace door-to-door delivery for 40 million homes with neighborhood cluster boxes and eliminate 100,000 postal jobs. The Koch brothers contributed $107,000 to 13 Republican members of the HOGRC — $12,500 just to Issa, who sent staff members to a Koch brothers’ think tank. (Press Enterprise, Feb. 27, 2011) Issa appointed staffers to the HOGRC who are linked to lobbying firms that accepted $1.2 million from Pitney Bowes and $240,000 from FedEx.(opensecrets.org) On Aug. 2, Sen. State Lawmakers Object to Social Security Office Move Seven downstate members of the House of Representatives have waded into the ongoing controversy over the pending move of the Social Security Administration's (SSA) Georgetown office. State Reps. Danny Short, R-Seaford; Ruth Briggs King, R-Georgetown; Ron Gray, R-Selbyville; Tim Dukes, R-Laurel; Harvey Kenton, R-Milford; Bobby Outten, R-Harrington; and Dave Wilson, R-Cedar Creek Hundred have sent a letter to Delaware's congressional delegation protesting the relocation of the office serving Sussex County. The lease is expiring on the agency's current office space and SSA officials have reportedly entered into a long-term contract for new accommodations just west of Lewes. The seven state representatives argue that it makes little sense to relocate the office from its central Sussex location to the northeast corner of the county 12 miles away. The letter summarizes the logistical benefits of keeping the office in the county seat, citing the proximity of ...

Call me insensitive, but I just don't think we need to spend money to keep people from getting fat. They argue this will decrease Medicare costs. From left, Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) confer as the Senate Judiciary Committee meets on immigration reform on Capitol Hill in Washington on May 9. All three were in Congress in 1986, when the last immigration reform bill passed. (J. Scott Applewhite/AP) Fun fact: Twenty-one currently sitting senators voted on the 1986 immigration reform bill, the last comprehensive bill signed into law to include a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Nine of them were already in the Senate, while 12 were in the House. You can see the 1986 Senate roll call here, and the House one here. So how constant were people’s votes? Well, 13 voted the same way both times: Sens. Tom Harkin (D-Ia.), Carl Levin (D-Mich.), Max Baucus (D-Mont.), and Jay Rockefeller (D-Wv.) voted yes in the Senate in both 1986 and 2013, while Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) voted no both times in the Senate. Then-Reps. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Tom Carper (D-Del.), Bill Nelson (D-Fl.), *** Dur ...

These elected officials has promised to secure the border and unequivocally stated that the 1986 amnesty would be the final amnesty. Tom Carper has set an ambitious timetable for legislation to help save the financially struggling U.S. Postal Service. WASHINGTON – Today, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) released the following statement after the President announced a new initiative to combat gun violence:
Please share this with everyone. At the very least read it. Please. To be fair, this note includes text from a reply and my thoughts concerning it. This is not an actual exchange. I recently sent a brief letter to my United States Senator, Tom Carper, instructing him to vote against gun control legislation. I have just received a much more in depth reply than I am accustomed to receiving from such a communique. In it, Senator Carper states, and I do not doubt his sincerity, that (in a nutshell) he is thinking of the families involved in the Newtown, CT murders, that we need to find a balance between our second amendment rights and keeping people safe, that his family produced muskets, that shooting his been a hobby of his and his family’s, admiration for law enforcement personnel, etc.But he goes on to say the following: “I've long supported common-sense efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the severely mentally ill. In 2004, I voted to renew the Assault Weapons ...

The other was aimed at reviving the teetering U.S. Postal Service, which is about to default again. “I hear from our Republican colleagues they didn’t want to force their folks to make difficult votes,” said Tom Carper, a lead Senate sponsor." (Gail Collins, NY Times, 9/21) What do the postal workers' unions that endorsed Michael Grimm think about that? From that same column: "Really, there’s no excuse on this one.
