Football - Liga Atletico take huge step towards title with Valencia win La Liga, Mestalla – Valencia 0 Atletico Madrid 1 (Garcia 43) Atletico Madrid refused to flinch in the Spanish title race as Raul Garcia's first-half header earned a 1-0 victory at Valencia that kept them in the driving seat with three games to go. Garcia struck just before halftime on Sunday to give Atletico the victory that took them to a club record 88 points, six above second placed Real Madrid who beat Osasuna on Saturday and still have a game in hand of their city rivals. Barcelona, in mourning following the death of former coach Tito Vilanova last Friday, are away to Villarreal later and can move up to 84 points with a win. Atletico were not at their best and lacked their usual high intensity, possibly a result of tiredness after a grueling campaign and this week's tense 0-0 draw in the Champions League semi-final, first leg against Chelsea. However, they inched towards the title despite having Juanfran red-carded in stoppage ...

Barcelona, mourning the death of former coach Tito Vilanova on Friday, are now in third place with 81 points from 34 matches and travel to Villarreal on Sunday. Real did not risk Gareth Bale or Karim Benzema against Osasuna ahead of their Champions League semifinal second leg at Bayern Munich on Tuesday in which they hold a 1-0 advantage. But there was no holding Ronaldo, who only returned from injury in Wednesday's first leg against Bayern at the Bernabeu having been out since early April, as he cut in from the left wing and fired into the corner of the net after six minutes. Former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has died of throat cancer at the age of 45. Vilanova led the Catalan club for a season after taking over from Pep Guardiola, but was forced to resign last summer because of ill health. Vilanova led Barca to their highest ever points total for a La Liga season during his single season in charge, their 100 points a joint record for the division with Real Madrid.
Tito Vilanova assistated Pep Guardiola in Barca's most succesful spell. He then took charge when Pep left. They made their best ever start in La Liga in the 2012/13 season winning the league 15 points in front of Real Madrid, despite having treatment for cancer which had come back for the second time. He left Barca at the end of that season. 45 is no age. Thoughts go to his family. Rest in peace Tito.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas says the reason behind his famous phone call to Barcelona midfielder Xavi was because he thought the two clubs were at breaking point, which could have adversely affected the fortunes of Spain. Following a number of ill-tempered El Clasico matches, the defining moment for Casillas was after the Supercopa touchline fracas in 2011 that saw former Madrid coach Jose Mourinho poke the eye of Barca predecessor Tito Vilanova. The goalkeeper and Xavi have been friends since they were teenagers and the shot-stopper felt a call to his international team-mate was needed to avoid further divide and conflict in the Spanish squad - the bulk of which is made up of Barca and Madrid players. “I called Xavi because it was my duty to do so, as the captain, it’s my responsibility,” Casillas told El Pais. “I knew what I had to do because the group was becoming divided, because I represent my country and I have to defend an idea. “We chatted about how we could re-direct what was g ...
Top Clasico clashes Thefootballnews picks out a selection of classic on and off-pitch battles between Real Madrid and Barcelona. 10 - Barca 3-2 Madrid (Spanish Supercopa second-leg, 2011) In his book Morbo, Spanish football expert Phil Ball describes Clasicos as less football matches, more re-enactments of the Civil War. History does not tell us whether Franco's key weapons against Catalan revolutionaries included eye-gouging, but if Jose Mourinho was one of his generals, it might have done. The ‘Gouge-gate’ game itself --a Supercopa second-leg in which Lionel Messi scored the winner in a 5-4 aggregate win for Barcelona -- was as fiery as most Clasicos were around that time. Six months earlier, Barca substitute keeper Pinto had managed to get himself sent off from the bench after wading into a touchline fight and, in a similar scuffle in the Supercopa, Mourinho crept up behind then-Barca assistant Tito Vilanova and... well, you know what he did. At least he was magnanimous afterwards, mind -- he desc ...
BARCELONA - REAL MADRID Meet El Clásico’s new coaches (FIFA.com) Friday 25 October 2013 The eyes of the football world will once again be fixed on Spain on Saturday, when La Liga leaders Barcelona take on Real Madrid. Three points separate the sides ahead of the 167th staging of El Clásico, which has lost none of its spice despite much of the tension surrounding the rivalry having evaporated this season, thanks in the main to changes on both benches. After a period in which off-field exchanges stoked up the animosity between these two old rivals, the presence in the dugouts of Gerardo Martino and Carlo Ancelotti has ensured that football, and nothing else, is the topic of debate in the build-up to this weekend’s showdown. The arrival of the vastly experienced duo has significantly reduced the hostility generated by the fixture in the last few campaigns. Indeed the only reminder of the recent past on Saturday will be the pre-match fan mosaic offering support to Tito Vilanova, Martino’s predecessor ...
Barcelona plan wonderful tribute to Vilanova before El Clasico kickoff. Barcelona have organised a wonderful pre-match tribute for Tito Vilanova ahead of Saturday's El Clasico against Real Madrid. Before kickoff at the Nou Camp, all 98,000 Barca members will raise cardboard squares in the colours of the Catalan flag and with a message 'Forca Tito' (Courage Tito). Barca's former coach is continuing his treatment from cancer, which was diagnosed two years ago and forced him to step down as coach at the beginning of this season.
The Clasico in Spain always throws up talking points and controversies in abundance, as 2 of the country's biggest and most successful teams go head to head to prove their supremacy over 1 another. In the build up to this weekend's El Clasico, here are 5 greatest moments that came in matches between the 2 sides in recent seasons. 5] Barcelona give Real Madrid the guard of honour Barcelona and Real Madrid were to face off against each other on 7th May, 2008, but the usual sting and anticipation that surrounds an El Clasico game was hardly present that day. Real Madrid had already won the league before the game kicked off, and as they were stepping onto the pitch, the Barcelona team formed a guard of honour to salute them and their achievements that season. To further compound their misery, Real Madrid beat them 4-1, depriving the Catalans of an automatic Champions League qualification berth. Xavi called the guard of honour, or the pasillo, as it is called in Spain, the most humiliating experience of his li ...
European Match of the Weekend: Barcelona v Real Madrid The 167th La Liga 'Clasico' between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Nou Camp on Saturday could be the ideal stage for Gareth Bale and Neymar to show they are worth a combined price tag of almost £135 million. Or, as is more likely, one of the most intense rivalries in football and a match watched by hundreds of millions around the world will again showcase the peerless talents of Barca's Argentine World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and Real's Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Leaders Barca dropped their first points of the campaign with a 0-0 draw at Osasuna last weekend and victory for Real, as well as providing a huge confidence boost, would put them level with their bitter rivals on 25 points from 10 games. Wales winger Bale replaced Ronaldo as the most expensive player in history when he joined Real from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £86m in the close season, while Barca paid some £49m to lure Brazil forward Neymar from Santos. Bale's fi ...

Barcelona v Real Madrid: Neymar ready for El Clasico debut BARCELONA V REAL MADRID Venue: Nou Camp Date: Saturday, 26 October Barcelona forward Neymar is excited about his first meeting with Real Madrid on Saturday. The Brazil international joined Barca from Santos in the summer for £48.6m and has scored three goals in 13 games. "The Clasico is the most important game for any player," the 21-year-old told the club website. "It's the match every player wants to play in. It's the game where each player wants to play his best football." Did you know? Neymar is Santos's leading scorer in the post-Pele era despite leaving them at the age of 21. He added: "This will be my first Clasico and I hope to have a great debut, preferably with a victory." Champions Barcelona lead La Liga, three points above third-placed Real, after dropping only two points from their opening nine games. And Neymar is not worried about the pressure, saying: "I think the anxiety is the same before any match. I understand that we're talki ...

•Hectic pre-season schedules for Real Madrid and Barcelona_ •Real Madrid's summer plans are no less taxing.Barcelona have completed details of a tour that will see them travel over 30,000 kilometers, with some players condemned to travel even more. Real Madrid and Barcelona had better stock up on reading material and video-games and prepare to fasten their seatbelts as it looks like they are all in for a busy summer in terms of travelling. Financial and commercial and marketing commitments will see both clubs, both of whom return to training in the next seven days, go almost all around the world to play their pre-season preparation games. The side coached by Tito Vilanova will play their first friendly game in the Polish city of Danzig July 20 before facing Bayern Munich, who are now coached by former Barca boss Pep Guardiola. After taking on Bayern in what is certain to be an emotional affair for many of the players, Barca then travel to Oslo (Norway) for a friendly game against Valerenga, before jet ...
The former Santiago Bernabeu star, who also spent a spell at Camp Nou, says the 21-year-old has already achieved legend status in Brazil as he prepares for his debut year in Europe Brazil legend Ronaldo has revealed that he would have preferred Neymar to chose Real Madrid over Barcelona. The 21-year-old joined the Catalans for £49 million (€57m) in June, signing a five-year contract with the Blaugrana over the Blancos, who were also chasing his signature. Ronaldo, who spent one year at Camp Nou and five years at the Santiago Bernabeu, admits that the move would not have been his ideal option but believes that the Brazilian "legend" will still thrive in Tito Vilanova's side. "I would have preferred him [Neymar] to sign for Madrid, but it's not for me to say," he told reporters in Las Vegas. "With so many clubs after him it was difficult to pull off. But Barcelona is a great team and we know he'll do well in Europe. For us Brazilians he is already a legend." Neymar was one of the stars of the Confederati ...
Mourinho's eye-gouge on Tito reaches Spanish Constitutional Court! A complaint filed by a Barcelona-based law firm against Former Real Madrid manager José Mourinho, on the grounds that gouging the eye of then Barça assistant Tito Vilanova represented a public-order offence, has now reached Spain's Constitutional Court. After a brawl erupted in the second leg of the 2011 Spanish Super Cup, on 17th August at the Camp Nou, Real Madrid's coach at the time, José Mourinho, jabbed his finger into the eye of Tito Vilanova, who reacted by slapping the Portuguese on the neck. Mourinho and Vilanova were subsequently hit with two- and one-match suspensions respectively, although neither ultimately served their bans following an amnesty granted by the president of the Spanish FA, Ángel María Villar. In February 2012, the day before the incident was set to be time-barred, the Casa Paraula legal firm filed a criminal complaint against Mourinho and Real Madrid – as the secondarily liable party – with Barcelona M ...

Empty benches at Real Madrid and Athletic de Bilbao Everyone at the Bernabéu takes it for granted that Carlo Ancelotti will replace José Mourinho and Ernesto Valverde is on the verge of becoming the first coach to occupy the bench at the new San Mamés stadium. But the simple truth is that to date, Real Madrid and Athletic are the only First Division teams in Spain that still don’t have coaches. After a successful stint with Valladolid, Miroslav Djukic, has made the leap to a big club like Valencia. The domino effect has led to Juan Ignacio Martínez who was in charge of Levante, to take over Valladolid. His place will be taken by Joaquín Caparrós. Celta are pinning their hopes on First Division debutant, Luis Enrique. At the other end of the scale is tried and tested coach, Bernd Schuster who has signed with Málaga until 2018. Jagoba Arrasate, former assistant coach at Real Sociedad, will replace Philippe Montanier as boss. Those staying where they are next season include: Tito Vilanova (Barcelona ...
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has joined Jose Mourinho in accusing Barcelona players Xavi and Andres Iniesta of sour grapes after the pair hit out at the former Bernabeu coach. Last week Xavi criticised the Portuguese coach's style of football and declared he "has left no legacy for the future", while Iniesta said the new Chelsea boss had "damaged Spanish football" due to his confrontational style. In his three years at Madrid Mourinho was the main antagonist in the rivalry between the two biggest clubs in Spain, most famously poking then Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova in the eye after a match in August 2011. Mourinho won Madrid's first league title for four years in 2012 and although Los Blancos lost out on the trophy to the Catalans last season, they overcame Vilanova's side in the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and in their last league fixture. The former Inter boss hit out at Iniesta during his unveiling at Stamford Bridge yesterday, saying: "I damaged Spanish football by being ...
Could Arsenal make a surprise move for Thiago Alcantara? Arsenal have been linked with Cesc Fabregas repeatedly over the past few months, but so far he has given every indication he wants to stay at Barcelona. One Barcelona man whose future is even less certain is his midfield teammate, Thiago Alcantara . The 22-year-old is available for transfer for a cut-price €18 million, due to a clause in his contract being automatically activated after he did not appear over a stipulated number of minutes in La Liga this season, thought to be around the 60 per cent mark. He has headed off to the under-21 Championships with Spain where he is already impressing, showing just why the price tag on his head is such great market value. The midfielder has plenty to think about, with Tito Vilanova describing him before he headed off as the 'future of Barcelona' and Xavi also urging him to be patient. Manchester United have been linked with him, as have City and even Real Madrid, and he is said to be thinking about moving ...
Barcelona's transfer plans this summer Barcelona enjoyed a successful season in 2012-13. Tito Vilanova's team ran away with La Liga as they racked up 100 points to equal Real Madrid's record from the previous campaign and also reached the semi-finals of both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Anyone unhappy with that, the Catalan coach claimed last week, has a very short memory. However, the nature of the team's defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals left a bitter taste in the mouth for Barca as the realisation hit home that this is perhaps no longer the era they had been dominating. Seven goals shipped over two legs told a torrid tale for the Catalan club and served to highlight many problems which had been lingering behind Lionel Messi's incredible goalscoring stats. The Argentine's absence in key matches revealed Barca's unsatisfactory attacking alternatives, while problems in defence were not suitably addressed last summer and that cost Tito's team against the very best si ...
Barcelona have broken the 100 points barrier with victory over Malaga. Champions Barcelona became only the second team in Primera Division history to reach the 100-point mark. Barca needed a win over Malaga to match the record-breaking 100-point haul Real Madrid managed last season and Tito Vilanova's men duly delivered. The game was as good as over inside the opening 16 minutes at the Nou Camp as Barca raced into a 3-0 lead through goals from David Villa, Cesc Fabregas and Martin Montoya. Andres Iniesta then added a fourth early in the second half for Barca's 115th league goal of the season - breaking the previous-best mark of 114 that the Catalan giants tallied last term.
Man City will offer Micah Richards and Pablo Zabaletta new contracts to try and keep the 'core' members of the squad together. Tom Ince could be following in his father's footsteps after Inter Milan registered an interest in him. Christian Benteke is ready to tell Aston Villa he is ready to leave the club to force a move. Cesc Fabregas will meet Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova this week for talks about his future with Man United, Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea all interested. Luis Suarez could end up making a move to Athletico Madrid over Real. Nani is poised to leave Man Unied and join big spending Monaco in a £20m deal. Real Madrid are lining up a HUGE bid of £85m for Gareth Bale as well as splashing out £40m for Luis Suarez.

Chelsea displace Barcelona atop the International Federation of Football History & Statistics ranking Barcelona have been knocked off the top of the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) Club World Ranking after a poor run of results. But to many people's surprise it isn't Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, or even Manchester United who have displaced them. No, the current table toppers in the IFFHS Club World Ranking are Chelsea. That's right, that Stamford Bridge club that seemingly stumbles from crisis to crisis like a drunk from bar to bar - the club whose manager last week went into meltdown, whose owner is reportedly a crazed megalomanic, and whose players include the £50m striker who doesn't score goals and the club legend who can't earn himself a new deal. Chelsea have endured a miserable Premier League season, their first campaign of domestic struggle since, wait, their first since last year come to think of it. But while Roberto Di Matteo managed to salvage an anaemic lea ...
Barca at Euro crossroads Barcelona face a crossroads in their season on Tuesday when they attempt to overturn their Round of 16 first leg defeat at AC Milan and stay on course for a fourth Champions League final in eight seasons. Anything less than a quick return to form after their 2-0 defeat in the first leg in Milan on February 20 will probably see Barcelona follow Manchester United, who they beat in the 2009 and 2011 finals, through the exit door. Arsenal, who lost to Barcelona in the 2006 final, are also expected to be eliminated unless they can overturn their 3-1 defeat against German champions-elect Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena. The Round of 16 will be completed this week with Schalke 04 going into their home leg against Galatasaray as favourites to advance after drawing 1-1 in Turkey and Malaga seeking to maximise home advantage in their attempt to overturn their 1-0 defeat at Porto in the first game. If Barca are to join arch-rivals Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and Paris St Germ ...

Roura: We can overcome Milan Barcelona's stand-in coach Jordi Roura has said he feels his players are "looking forward to overcoming Milan" as they try to recover from a 2-0 deficit in the Champions League. The last week has seen much soul-searching in Catalonia after the setback in Italy was followed by two crushing defeats to Real Madrid in five days. The results left Barca players including Lionel Messi, Xavi Hernandez, Javier Mascherano, Jordi Alba and Cesc Fabregas talking of feeling low. Many observers have pointed to the importance of the absence of coach Tito Vilanova, who is receiving medical treatment in New York. But speaking after training on Friday, Roura, Vilanova's assistant, said his 30-year association with the club had shown him that both positives and negatives tended to be overemphasised. "There is always a tendency to get overly euphoric when we win and excessively pessimistic when we lose," he explained. "We all want to come back against Milan. We had a long week but the response [of ...
Messi hurt by Barcelona setbacks" Lionel Messi has said Barcelona's recent defeats have hurt him and that everyone at the club needs to "give a little more" to turn things around. Barca's season had been a runaway success until mid-February, but has since come off the rails with defeats to Milan in their Champions League last 16 first leg and to domestic rivals Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey and La Liga. Messi opened his own Adidas-sponsored temporary museum in central Barcelona on Wednesday after having earlier attending a squad meal organised to improve team spirit. He said neither he nor his team-mates had enjoyed their recent form but that Tuesday's return leg against Milan at the Camp Nou was an ideal opportunity to start to put things right. "I am not sad, although I am hurting," the Argentine told reporters. "I do not like to lose out on important things, and neither does the team. "We now have an ideal moment to do it [put things right]. The motivation in the dressing room to want to be better ev ...
Football:- Barcelona super star Lionel Messi said the squad is aware that we should all give a little extra to the team performance though the squad knows what went wrong in the past games, but we'll keep that between us. He also stressed that, Italian teams are very strong and tactical. And We hope to come back against AC Milan. They won in Milan, we can win here in Barcelona as well and turn things around as he express confidence in the squad. He also further explain that what happened with the coach Tito Vilanova and Eric Abidal affected the squad psychologically, but that shouldn't be an excuse he affirmed. This is a strong group, we will bounce back. He however praise and congratulate their eternal rival, Real Madrid for their performance against Manchester United stressing that Madrid showed how strong they are. Whoever would have qualified, Madrid or Man United, would have been a candidate to win the Champions League. He also chuckled about the suggestion that his former coach at the national side ...
News for F.C.Barcelona There has been much talk going around Barcelona after they have suffered loses at the hands of AC Milan and Real Madrid . Critics have gone on to say that their 11-point lead in La Liga is not enough and that these are signs of the end of an era. How accurate their prediction is only time will tell but in my opinion there is still plenty of time to recover. We must not forget that their Head Coach, Tito Vilanova, is suffering a cancer relapse and he is in New York getting the treatment for it. At such a time, it is nearly impossible for us to realise the true magnitude of the affect on the team. This is only affecting Barcelona tactically – asevident in their recent performances – but also psychologically. Remember, Tito is not the only one getting treatment for cancer. Eric Abidal has been missing from action for quite some time as well. On top of that, Barcelona has been playing with two lines of midfielders this season since David Villa has been left out for a majority of the ...

Cristiano Ronaldo came on and transformed the Clásico Alfredo Relaño | As.com It was a strange Clásico, and it ended in even stranger circumstances. Barcelona's complaints at the denial of a late penalty were vehement and bitter, yet in truth it would have been an ill-deserved point for the La Liga leaders. Last-minute penalty calls inevitably provoke the greatest fury, but seeing the visitors' ire as they berated referee Miguel Ángel Pérez Lasa, it was striking that precisely this passion was what had been missing from their performance at the Santiago Bernabéu. They set out for a draw and, as often happens in such cases, they came away empty-handed. Neither Thiago Alcántara nor David Villa grasped the opportunity of a return to the starting line-up, although their team-mates were no better. Barça seem to have gone completely off the boil, Lionel Messi included (though no matter how badly he plays, the Argentine is so good that he is almost incapable of not scoring at least once). Real Madrid lin ...
Surely, it's not the best of times for Fc Barcelona of Spain. After being humbled 2-0 by a defiant Ac Milan side in their Champions League round of 16 1st leg, it has been ignominiously followed by a Copa del Rey and La Liga defeats to their arch rivals Real Madrid. With 3 defeats in the space of two weeks, there's definitely no much smiles at Camp Nou at the moment. Stripped of Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova, Barcelona have not been able to get the groove and spark that characterised the tenure of Guardiola who opted out after the 2010/2011. In him, Barcelona had a coach blessed with tact, know-how, technical clout and charisma to tutore his galaxy of talented players even when the chips were down. He possessed that charm and aura that propelled the Blaugrana in his time. He was intelligent and smartly dressed. I digress. My point is that without an atom of doubt, this gentlemam who is now contracted to Bayern Munich has left a big hole that will take some time to be filled. Tito Vilanova, his assistan ...

Roura expects Barca reaction Jordi Roura will make changes to the Barcelona team for Sevilla tomorrow, but still expects them to react to the midweek disappointment. The Blaugrana star says he hopes to improve with every season, and admitted working without Tito Vilanova - who is recovering from cancer treatment - can be difficult Andres Iniesta has revealed he would like to play alongside Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos and Malaga attacker Isco at Barcelona. The Blaugrana star has played alongside the Blancos defender in the Spain national side for years, while the Rosaleda starlet has been impressive form this season. When asked at the sixth edition of the World Sports Gala who he would like to bring to Barcelona, Iniesta rooted for two compatriots. "I’ve always liked Sergio Ramos,” Mundo Deportivo quoted him as saying. “He's very impressive. And I like to look at the upcoming players, such as Isco." Iniesta added he misses working with Pep Guardiola, who left Camp Nou as Head Coach last summer, and admitted it is difficult working with current boss Tito Vilanova being absent due to his recovery from cancer treatment. “I do miss Guardiola because I like wo ...
Pep Guardiola has already lined up his first major coup as he prepares to take the reins of Bayern Munich next season. The Former Barcelona boss is set to unleash a £50 million bid for Tottenham's Gareth Bale, the Daily Mail reports. It is claimed Guardiola will be given a total transfer budget of over £100 million this summer, and Bale is his top priority. The in-form Spurs winger has long been linked with Real Madrid and Barcelona, but the opportunity to work under Guardiola may see him switch to the Bundesliga instead. Barcelona, meanwhile, are looking to shore up the other end of the pitch, as they plot a move for Chelsea defender David Luiz. Barca boss Tito Vilanova has targeted Luiz, and the Daily Express states that a deal in the region of £21 million could be in the offing. Chelsea may be reluctant to part with Luiz, but such a hefty transfer fee could see them persuaded in the summer. Speculation over Chelsea's managerial position continues to rumble on, with the Daily Mirror claiming Malaga b ...
Barcelona's Sunday celebrations started early with a 6-1 romp over Getafe, and ended late with a slip- up by second-placed Atletico Madrid which has all but ended the Spanish title race. Atletico's 2-1 defeat at Rayo Vallecano gave Barca a commanding 12-point lead with 15 matches to play, as third-placed champions Real Madrid languish another four points adrift. "It was an unusual time to play but we had a party in the stadium," the Catalan side's assistant coach Jordi Roura said after the midday kickoff at the Camp Nou, where more than 85,000 fans turned up. "The players were at an extraordinary level. They were intense from the first minute," added Roura, who is running the team while Tito Vilanova is receiving cancer treatment in New York Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in the sixth minute with his first league goal this season before Lionel Messi netted for a record-extending 13th successive La Liga game before quarter of an hour had been played -- his 35th in the competition from 23 appearances. Barça looks to fresh legs The time has come for Barça to freshen things up. With the Champions League all set to get back in swing, Tito Vilanova and Jordi Roura will be forging full steam ahead with their squad rotation. Up to now, the plan has been for a select cluster of players to carry the team's hopes by playing the bulk of the minutes. However, the watershed came with last weekend's fixture in Valencia. From now on, the changes are going to come thick and fast, because several players have a lot of minutes under their belts. The proof came at the Mestalla, where a number of 'Azulgranas' looked heavy-legged. While it's true that this drop-off can be partially explained by Barcelona's gruelling encounter with Real Madrid four days earlier, no one can deny that this tiredness has more to do with the rough and tumble of the season so far. Vilanova has been relying on a core group of eleven, all of whom have played around 2,000 minutes; indeed, he went with this very line-up against Valencia last Sund ...
Jordi Roura went with a great starting lineup against Valencia on Sunday. But as great as the number one starting lineup is, it's time to switch things up. Let's get things clear: The lineup of Valdes; Alba, Pique, Puyol, Alves; Sergio Busquets, Xavi, Cesc; Pedro, Messi, and Iniesta is still the number one lineup Barcelona can present. This is the lineup that should go up against Real Madrid in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal, as well as Champions League action. But some of the players on the bench need more starting time. David Villa looked extremely rusty when he came on for Fabregas against Valencia. Thiago has continued to play well when he's in games. And with Xavi being out for 15 days with an injury, Thiago definitely needs to start. For the Getafe game, I'd start both Thiago and David Villa. They need and deserve more playing time. Speaking of playing time, how about giving Marc Bartra or Cristian Tello some time on the pitch? It's not that I'm upset at Tito Vilanova or Jordi Roura. I ...

Real Sociedad come from behind to beat Barcelona Madrid, January 20 Spanish leaders Barcelona suffered their first Spanish La Liga defeat on Saturday when they surprisingly surrendered a 2-0 lead to go down 3-2 to Real Sociedad. Super-sub Imanol Agirretxe scored an injury-time winner for Sociedad. The shock defeat left Barca 11 points above second-placed Atletico Madrid, who will play Levante on Sunday. Atletico are seven points above third-placed Real Madrid, who visit Valencia on Sunday. Barca coach Tito Vilanova said: “I have to congratulate Real Sociedad. I have nothing to reproach my players for. I never thought this game was going to be easy, not even when it was 2-0 to us. We had to lose one day. This is football, but this does not worry me.” Striker Pedro, who scored Barca’s second goal, complained about their side’s defender Gerard Pique being sent off, saying “it was not fair at all.” Sociedad boss Philippe Montanier said: “I am very proud of my team. Real Sociedad 3 Barcelona 2 DEFEATED ... Lionel Messi's Barcelona were humbled by Real Sociedad Published: 47 minutes ago Lionel Messi scored but could not prevent 10-man Barcelona slipping to their first La Liga defeat of the season. First-half goals from Messi and Pedro put the visitors in firm conrol against their mid-table opponents. But Real Sociedad winger Gonzalo Castro netted either side of defender Gerard Pique being given his marching orders as Barca blow their advantage. And Tito Vilanova’s men were left without even a point for their troubles when Imanol Agirretxe poked home from close range in injury time. LAST-GASP HERO ... Vilanova: I would be axed over 18 point gap Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova says he would have been sacked had his side slipped as badly as Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid have over the first half of the Primera Division season. While Vilanova's side have won 18 and drawn one of their first 19 matches in his first season in charge, Mourinho's Madrid have been struggling, with their latest unexpected result - Saturday's 0-0 at bottom side Osasuna - leaving last year's champions a whopping 18 points behind Barca in the table. When asked if Madrid could be discounted as a title rival given the huge gap, Vilanova said the race was far from over, but he reckoned he would not have survived in his job if his team had dropped so many points. "No," he said. "But this. That question, if the situation was reversed, I would not be here answering it. Madrid are capable of winning every game of the second half of the season and we could lose those points. We are not talking about there just being four games left. There are l ...

Tito Vilanova has piled the pressure on Jose Mourinho by suggesting that if Barcelona were 18 points behind Real Madrid he would be sacked
Tito Vilanova made a tacit dig on Tuesday at his Real Madrid counterpart Jose Mourinho by claiming that if Barca were 18 points behind their fierce rivals as Real are, he himself would be out of a job.
World Sports News Messi helps Barca set new record Barcelona set a new record for the best start to a Spanish soccer league season on Sunday when a 3-1 win at Malaga kept them 11 points clear of Atletico Madrid and 18 in front of Real Madrid. Ballon d'Or winner Messi scored for a ninth successive league game and then supplied Cesc Fabregas and Thiago Alcantara for the second and third goals. He has 28 for the La Liga season. Barcelona have 55 points from 19 games with 18 wins and a draw, breaking the previous mark for the halfway stage of the campaign which they set at 52 points in 2010-'11. "We're very happy to get 55 out of 57 points but, logically, it will be difficult to repeat that with the Champions League and the Spanish Cup to think about as well," said Barca coach Tito Vilanova. "We have Atletico 11 points behind us and we have to go there and to Real Madrid so we can't just stop now - we have to keep going." Malaga have the best defensive record in La Liga but goalkeeper Willy Caballero, after s ...
This brings us to his spell at Real Madrid. In three years he has won just La Copa del Rey and a League title. Mourinho seems to be having a hard time in Spain and his attitude is getting worse. In the Premier League he came across as alaughable clown and a showman. Although he caused problems and had rifts with Wenger, Fergie and even Benitez, it was nothing compared to what the Portuguese manager has caused in Spain. Jose Mourinho has a chip on his shoulder and it is called Barca. He cannot stomach Barcelona being better than Real Madrid. Don’t get me wrong; Real Madrid has an amazing team but it doesn’t work the way it should. Mourinho has an inferiority complexand it has filtered down into the dressing room. How else can we explain the Clasico matches, which would not look out of place at Twickenham in London? He has tried to cause division between Real Madrid and Barca on such a scale that Iker Casillas and Barca’s Xavi have had to step in and take matters into to their own hands much to the di ...

Numbers don't lie, and there is no doubt Barcelona has been the best team in 2012. The 'Azulgranas' may not have captured the league title, but they have earned some 103 points this calendar year, equalling the mark they set in 2010. On the other hand, Real Madrid, last year's league champion, lies some way off the pace, having picked up 93 points. The start overseen by Tito Vilanova this campaign has been nothing short of remarkable. Barça is sitting pretty at the top of the table, on 49 points, having matched its goalscoring figures from 1950-51, with 57 goals. The 'Azulgranas' still have two games left – against Espanyol and Málaga – to further raise the bar before the first half of the season officially comes to a close. If the Catalans come away with three points on both occasions, they will reach the league halfway mark with 55 points, putting them firmly on course to smash the record 100-point tally set by Real Madrid last season. Leo Messi, meanwhile, has the chance to equal his personal rec ...

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho was under renewed pressure on Saturday after his team lost 3-2 at Malaga, a defeat which left the champions 16 points behind leaders Barcelona. The disappointment was compounded by Mourinho's controversial decision to drop goalkeeper and captain Iker Casillas from the starting line-up. It was the first time in ten years that the Spanish FIFA World Cup™ winner had been axed with 25-year- old Antonio Adan called up to take the place of the benched veteran. Isco and Roque Santa Cruz, with a double, grabbed the goals for Malaga. Madrid did level at 1-1 with an own-goal by Samuel Sanchez and Karim Benzema made it 3-2 eight minutes from time, but the home side clung on to celebrate their first win over Real in 29 years. Malaga's win left the Costa del Sol club in fourth, two points behind Real on 31 points while Atletico Madrid, who beat Celta Vigo 1-0 on Friday, are second, nine points behind Barcelona. Barça had earlier won 3-1 at Valladolid, a timely boost for cancer- stric ...
Mourinho wishes Vilanova the best 22 December 2012 01:53 Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has expressed his sympathy for Barcelona counterpart Tito Vilanova after his cancer relapse. Vilanova, who had an operation to remove a tumour in a salivary gland last year, suffered a recurrence of his throat cancer which led to another bout of surgery on Thursday. He will be in hospital until Sunday at least before needing up to six weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The news came as a shock to the football world and although Mourinho remained tight-lipped on what contact he had with Vilanova since the news, he offered his best wishes to the 44- year-old. "I do not like talking about what I do in my private life," said Mourinho. "Whether I call him (Vilanova) or not, or send a text or not, or talk to Vilanova or not, is a personal thing. I have no comment about it. "The fact is that a colleague has a problem and I am the same as everyone. "I think that with issues like this everybody desires the same thing. Bec ...

Barcelona achieved a prestigious 4-1 victory against Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou in Matchday 14 of La Liga. Adriano, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi (double) scored the goals for the Blaugrana, who enjoyed 74 percent of possession and attempted 11 shots, six of them on target. This result helps Tito Vilanova's side extend the lead at the top of the table to nine points over Atletico and 13 over Real Madrid. Colchonero coach Diego Simeone came to the Camp Nou with the unsurprising idea of dropping deep, placing two solid lines of four in the width of the edge of the penalty area and allowing his two strikers to wait for eventual counterattacking chances upfront. At that point, Barcelona knew that the only way to win would be to tire Atletico out by constantly asking questions of their defenders while patiently applying the pass-and-move philosophy. Such is the level of expectation on his shoulders that it can be argued that, despite scoring twice, Lionel Messi had a relatively quiet game by his standa ...

Real Madrid's Spanish title defense suffered another setback on Saturday as Jose Mourinho's team lost 1-0 at Real Betis. It was third-placed Madrid's third defeat in 13 league matches this season, all of them away from the Santiago Bernabeu, and meant Los Blancos could end the weekend 11 points behind leaders Barcelona. On Sunday, Tito Vilanova's team travel to Levante, who dropped to sixth behind Malaga and fifth- placed Betis. Real's city rivals Atletico could move eight points clear in second with a Sunday victory at home to Sevilla. Betis midfielder Benat Etxebarria, who has been part of Spain's national squad this season, pounced on an error by Angel Di Maria to fire the only goal from the edge of the penalty area in the 17th minute. Real had the ball in the net before halftime, but the visitors were left aggrieved after striker Karim Benzema appeared to be incorrectly ruled offside from Xabi Alonso's free-kick. La Liga PREVIEW Real Madrid hope Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit for Saturday's visit of Athletic Bilbao, which follows Barcelona's clash with Real Zaragoza. Prolific Portuguese forward Ronaldo, who has already scored 19 goals in all competitions for Real this season, suffered a nasty eye injury against Levante in the Primera Division last week. A large cut opened up above the player's eye after he was caught by defender David Navarro's elbow early in the match. He played on after treatment - and scored - inthe 2-1 win but later had headaches and dizzy spells and missed Portugal's midweek friendly in Gabon. Jose Mourinho would not want to be withouthis key forward at the Bernabeu as Real look to keep pace with the top two sides in La Liga. After a slow start, Real have climbed to third after winning their last four matches but still trail leaders Barca by eight points and are fivebehind city rivals Atletico Madrid. Sami Khedira and Karim Benzema are also hoping to prove their fitness after recent injuries. ...
Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has lashed out at Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho for overlooking Real Madrid’s youngsters to play Michael Essien at left-back.
• This was the fifth game this season that Barça have come from behind to win a game, following the wins over Real Madrid(3-2), Osasuna (1-2), Spartak (3-2) and Seville (2-3). They also came behind in the league game against Madrid to draw 2-2. • Barça have thus failed to come back on just one occasion – the 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup. • Those comebacks are reflected in the timing of the team’s goals, with 12, of the total of 35 scored coming in the last 15 minutes. • Jordi Alba’s winner was his second goal in two games, having scored the opener in last weekend’s opener against Deportivo. • Alba’s goal gave Barça a deserved win, as reflected in the following stats: Barça made 998 passes to Celtic’s 229, 912 of them successful to Celtic’s 169. They had 28 shots, with 11 on target (6 and 1 for the Scottish team) and sent 19 crosses into the box, compared with just 9 from Celtic. • Bartra’s debut means that Tito Vilanova has used 20 players so far this ...
Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova says Lionel Messi is the clear favourite for the 2012 Ballon d'Or award and - in comments clearly aimed at Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho - says he does not need to mount a campaign to convince anyone.

What is tHE MEANING OF THIS? Barca A movie maker? -filming Real defender pepe- Barcelona have a scouting video from two seasons ago detailing the 'unsporting behaviour' of Real Madrid defender Pepe, it is claimed. Barca, two seasons ago, specifically had Pepe taped during an El Clasico to highlight his behaviour away from the ball. Barca coach Tito Vilanova is said to have been involved, on instructions of predecessor Pep Guardiola. He hinted at the existence of the video last week when reacting to Pepe's "theatrics" comments: "Pepe could make a video with all his kicks." Barca have decided never to release the video to the media as it would be sourced back to them.
Luis Aragones believes Real Madrid could still catch Barcelona at the top of La Liga despite the eight-point advantage currently held by the Blaugrana. The defending champions, who had a poor start to the domestic season, missed their chance to reduce the gap on Sunday when they drew with Tito Vilanova's league leaders. "There are a lot of games for Real Madrid to recover the points they need and for a team like Madrid nothing is lost," Aragones told O Jogo. Barca and Los Rojiblancos both sit on 19 points in the Liga table and Aragones has backed his former club to mount a title challenge of their own. "Atletico is stronger than in previous years," he added. "They can have a good season and be closer to their rivals, or even fight for the title if they can maintain this consistency." Aragones, who has not coached since leaving Fenerbahce in 2009, also left the door open when asked about a possible managerial comeback, saying that he remained "strong enough to return to work.
Real Madrid gaffer José Mourinho, said of the Camp Nou thriller: "It's the perfect result for the game. It was very good and the whole world was able to watch and enjoy it. You didn't know who was going to win right up to the last minute. We had the opportunity to score the 2-3 and they the 3-2". "La Liga is as it was, I'm very pleased with my team and the world is happy. It was a great game, Real Madrid is a respectful club and it doesn't talk about unawarded penalties", Mou said. On Cristiano and Messi he said: "Saying which one's the best should be banned because those two are from another planet. I would like my player to win the Ballon d'Or because he has been a champion in the toughest league in the world but they're both fantastic". Pepe, however, criticized the Barça players: "They are very dramatic. You all saw it. I didn't touch Iniesta and you saw how he went down but we're used to it". Tito Vilanova replied to the Real Madrid centre-back and summarized the game: "We could make a video for Pe ...

Michael Cox previews the first La Liga clash between Tito Vilanova and Jose Mourinho.
celona superstar striker Lionel Messi warned on Monday of Real Madrid's rapid counter-attacking threat as the archrivals prepare for a Sunday showdown. While praising Real Madrid's game, the 25-year-old Argentine refused, however, to comment on their coach Jose Mourinho, explaining that he had never spoken to him. "Madrid kill you in the counter-attack," Messi said in an interview with daily El Pais. "They have very fast forwards and the connection between defence and attack takes five seconds and then it's a goal. They don't need to play well to score three goals. They have a lot of positions for their players who are very good." Messi said he was friends with two fellow Argentines on the Real Madrid squad, Gonzalo "El Pipita" Higuain and Angel Di Maria. "You don't see El Pipita and then he has two kicks and scores twice," he added. The triple Ballon d'Or winner declined to give his opinion of Mourinho, however. "I can't say anything. I don't know him, I have never spoken to him," Messi said. "I can only ...
More than ever, tonight's Barcelona-Real Madrid was a shootout between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The two Best Players in the world left their stamp on a game that was at once an all-out battle between two top sides and a head-to-headshowdown. In the end, the spoils were shared both in terms of the overall scoreline (2-2) and the Messi-CR7 bout. Braces from Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo saw La Liga's 'Clásico' end all square, leaving things as they were in the league table, with Barcelona retaining its eight-point lead over 'Los Blancos'. Tito Vilanova's makeshift defence struggled in the first half, in which Mourinho's side threatened to deliver a knockout blow when, after setting up Cristiano for the opener, Karim Benzema crashed a drive off the near post. Had the Frenchman found the net, the whole complexion of the game could have been different. It was not to be and a major slip-up from Pepe gifted Barcelona a lifeline, the Portuguese centre-back mistiming his jump in the box to leave Mess ...
Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first player to score in six consecutive Clasicos. The 27-year-old opened the scoring in the 23rd minute minute at Camp Nou with a powerful left-footed drive after latching on to a Karim Benzema cross. The previous record of five, which Ronaldo matched in the 2-1 win over Barca in August, was held by Chilean striker Ivan Zamorano, who represented Los Blancos between 1992 and 1996. During his Clasico career, the fomer Manchester United winger has netted nine goals against the Blaugrana, six goals behind Lionel Messi, who has scored a total of 15 times against the Catalans' arch-rivals. Of the five previous last matches against Barca during which Ronaldo has found the net, he has ended up on the losing team three times, though he did find the target in last year's Liga win at Camp Nou. Ronaldo will be hoping that his strike will help Jose Mourinho's side close the gap on Tito Vilanova's men to just five points.
Messi: Mourinho is 'a good coach who does his job' The Argentine star spoke highly of the Real Madrid boss and rival Cristiano Ronaldo and first-year Barcelona head man Tito Vilanova ahead of Sunday's big clash at Camp Nou. By Livio Caferoglu Oct 7, 2012 6:50:00 AM Promo El Clásico Lionel Messi-Cristiano Ronaldo con texto Barcelona star Lionel Messi has played down the significance of Jose Mourinho's influence in the upcoming Clasico with Real Madrid, describing the coach as someone who just "does his job." The 49-year-old Mourinho has arguably intensified relations between the two clubs since being named as Manuel Pellegrini's successor in the Blancos' dugout two years ago, with recent derby encounters being embroiled in controversy. Messi insists that the Portuguese manager is only doing what is asked of him, though, while also praising Madrid counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo and teammate David Villa, contradicting recent media reports that the duo had fallen out. "[Mourinho is] a good coach who does his ...
The Catalan defender trained alongside the rest of his team-mates this afternoon ahead of Sunday's clash with Real Madrid Carles Puyol, who is recovering from injury, watched the training session on the sidelines with the ex-Blaugrana Rivaldo The team managed by Tito Vilanova trained behind closed doors this Saturday afternoon at the Camp Nou at 18.00, in what was the penultimate session before tomorrow’s showdown with Real Madrid. Without a doubt, the big news this afternoon was that Gerard Piqué returned to training with the group. Carles Puyol and Rivaldo watched the session from the sidelines. It’s worth noting that the Catalan defender picked up an injury in the Champions League match against Spartak Moscow. Medical tests confirmed that Piqué had sprained his left foot and that he’d miss at least two to three weeks of competitive play. Piqué started his recovery process on September 19 and today, 24 hours ahead of the Clásico, he was able to return to training. Final training session on Sun ...

It is that time of the year again. We are just a week away from the first Clasico of this season's La Liga, as Real Madrid travel to the Camp Nou on Sunday to take on Tito Vilanova's Fc Barcelona.
Jose Mourinho, the manager of Real Madrid, recently insulted Fc Barcelona forward Lionel Messi. Mourinho stated that Messi's goals count for nothing since Barca did not win La Liga BBVA and the UEFA Champions League. The Special One, as Mourinho loves to call himself, added salt to an already festering wound with another comment. He said that Cristiano Ronaldo deserved to win the Ballon D'Or for the year 2012 since he is the top scorer. The declarations were published in an article in Goal magazine. Mourinho added cynically that while Ronaldo is a top scorer on Real Madrid, Portugal is another issue. The Special One declared that he doubts Ronaldo can inspire glory for the Portuguese national football team. Mourinho said that Ronaldo did not have the support in Portugal as in Real Madrid. Whether the comment was true or not, it may count as an insult to Ronaldo. Before looking at others, The Special One should examine himself as Real Madrid manager. Mourinho is the same person who poked Tito Vilanova (Bar ...

It started with a win. Tito Vilanova's team kicked off their Champions League with victory at home to Spartak Moscow on Wednesday, coming from behind to win 3-2, just as Real Madrid had done 24 hours earlier against Manchester City. As usual, Barcelona's midield was majestic, and their attack astonishing. But it was hard to make a case for the defence. Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique are two of the world's best centre-backs, but when they are missing, it shows. The Barca captain is sidelined with a knee injury and unlikely to return for over a month, so when Pique departed with a knock in this game, it left the Catalans with a back line made up of Dani Alves, Alex Song, Javier Mascherano and Adriano. No wonder Victor Valdes looks nervous. Alves spends most of his time in the opposition half as an unorthodox winger and handed Spartak an equaliser as he inexplicably turned the ball past Valdes, while Mascherano's lack of pace had allowed Emmanuel Emenike to escape down the right in the first place. Song, to h ...

What does not take much statistical analysis to figure out is that Barcelona are Europe's current best team. Their success over the past few years has been astounding - three consecutive La Liga titles and two Champions League titles in three years prior to last season. Like Spain at international level, Barcelona may lose the odd match, but over the course of a season their win percentage will be much higher, and they place themselves more consistently in positions to win trophies - in semi-finals and finals. Blokhin's right, the best team does not always win, but Barcelona prove they do so with unerring regularity. As a result they sit atop the Euro Club Index, almost 100 points clear of La Liga rivals Real Madrid. In third and fourth place sit last year's top Premier League clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City respectively. Last season's Champions League finalists find themselves in fifth and sixth, although Chelsea sit beneath Bayern Munich, despite their penalty shootout victory. The only oth ...

Real Madrid and Barcelona renew their Spanish Super Cup rivalry on Thursday when Tito Vilanova faces Jose Mourinho at the Camp Nou stadium, where the two coaches famously clashed last year. Last August's match at Barcelona ended with both teams brawling on the field and Madrid coach Mourinho poking Vilanova in the eye with his finger. Barcelona won the Super Cup 5-4 on aggregate. Mourinho apologised this summer, aiming to calm tensions before his first meeting with Vilanova as a fellow Head Coach. "This isn't about Pep (Guardiola) or Tito, this is about (playing) Barca and that's how we're approaching it,'' Mourinho said on Wednesday. ''I think it's a game that will have little effect and if I could choose, I'd choose what happened last year where we lost the Super Cup and won the league. If losing is a motivation for winning the league, I'd sign off on it now.'' The match is the first of two legs. Madrid hosts the second leg at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Sept. 30. Vilanova, who was an assistant to Guar ...
Cruyff: Mourinho is mad 22 August 2012 Former Barcelona star Johan Cruyff has branded Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho a failure as a footballer. The Dutchman laughed off Mourinho's self-granted title of 'the only one', and even had harsh words for Barca's president Sandro Rosell. "He had nothing to show for himself as a footballer but now he can do something," Cruyff told AS. "Yes, he is 'the only one', the only one mad enough to say a thing like that. He's so mad he's in a straitjacket." Cruyff went on to discuss the transfer policies of his former team, and said that new trainer Tito Vilanova has a lot to prove. "The best philosophy is to create players, not buy them. We (Cruyff and Rosell) don't share the same philosophy. I don't believe he understands the notion that Barca is more than a club," he said. "He (Vilanova) has to prove his worth when the going gets tough. We'll have to wait and see before we jump to conclusions about him. Working behind Guardiola is not the same as being in charge, it's co ...

Camp Nou, Barcelona MATCH IN A SENTENCE: Barcelona scored three times in the opening quarter-hour of their season and cruised to a 5-1 victory over a Real Sociedad team that was simply brushed aside. KEY MOMENT: In the context of the match David Villa’s goal—his side’s fifth and scored with just six minutes to play—was the least important of the quintet, but in the context of the season it was a monumental tally. Villa, having missed much of last season with a serious leg break, made his competitive return to the Barcelona lineup when he replaced Pedro in the 75th minute. Nine minutes later his name was on the scoresheet following a neat one-two with fellow substitute Andres Iniesta that culminated in a left-footed finish from close in. New manager Tito Vilanova will need all his offensive weapons firing if Barcelona are to regain the title from Real Madrid, and Villa’s return to goal-scoring form is only good news in that regard. Mourinho and Tito Vilanova will be on the touchline when Real Madrid meet Barcelona in the two-legged Supercopa next month after both men had suspensions overturned on Tuesday. Barca took aim at Mourinho after the verdict was made. But Butragueno said: "We're not here to comment on what Barcelona say, but to do so regarding a decision taken by the President of the Federation to exonerate Jose Mourinho, Marcelo and Ozil for the Super Cup. We respect this decision, as we've always done in the past, in which we all know Barcelona were the protagonists and Real Madrid never complained. "It isn't the first time such leniency is shown; the President of the Federation has the power to show it and we respect that.

The match at Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderon Stadium will be Guardiola's last in charge of the team, ending an unprecedented period of success for Barcelona since the former player took charge in 2008. The 41-year-old Guardiola will be looking to finish the way he started, as a 4-1 cup victory over Athletic three years ago provided the first prize for his trophy cabinet. Ready to hand over the coaching duties to his assistant and good friend Tito Vilanova, Guardiola will look at the game as an opportunity to cap a season that started well but finished poorly. Barcelona hasn't played a meaningful game in one month after it lost to eventual Champions League winner Chelsea in the semifinals, just days after losing to Real Madrid to surrender its three-year hold on the Spanish league. "I've got the feeling we are very well prepared for this final," Guardiola said from the Camp Nou on Thursday. "A final is always there to be won.
