Barcelona have announced that a pitch at the club's training ground is to be named after former coach Tito Vilanova, who died earlier this year. - Tomas: Luis Enrique's Barcelona emerging from shadow of last season Vilanova passed away in April aged just 45, after a long battle with cancer. The former Blaugrana midfielder was assistant to Pep Guardiola for four trophy-laden seasons, before taking the top job himself and guiding the team to the 2012-13 La Liga title with a record tally of 100 points. The Girona-born coach then had to step down from the position in the summer of 2013, when it became evident that it was impossible for him to continue given the gravity of his illness. His passing just months later was marked by an outpouring of grief from Blaugrana players and fans. The decision to remember Vilanova in this way was announced in a club statement released after Tuesday's board meeting at the Camp Nou. "The board gave its unanimous approval of the proposal to rename pitch number one at the Ciuta ...
Football - Liga Atletico take huge step towards title with Valencia win La Liga, Mestalla – Valencia 0 Atletico Madrid 1 (Garcia 43) Atletico Madrid refused to flinch in the Spanish title race as Raul Garcia's first-half header earned a 1-0 victory at Valencia that kept them in the driving seat with three games to go. Garcia struck just before halftime on Sunday to give Atletico the victory that took them to a club record 88 points, six above second placed Real Madrid who beat Osasuna on Saturday and still have a game in hand of their city rivals. Barcelona, in mourning following the death of former coach Tito Vilanova last Friday, are away to Villarreal later and can move up to 84 points with a win. Atletico were not at their best and lacked their usual high intensity, possibly a result of tiredness after a grueling campaign and this week's tense 0-0 draw in the Champions League semi-final, first leg against Chelsea. However, they inched towards the title despite having Juanfran red-carded in stoppage ...
Football - Liga Barca complete remarkable comeback to keep slim title hopes alive La Liga, El Madrigal - Villarreal 2 (Cani 45, Trigueros 55) Barcelona 3 (Gabriel OG 65 Musacchio OG 78, Messi 83) Barcelona kept their slim title hopes alive in dramatic fashion, coming from two down to claim a thrilling 3-2 win over Villarreal. Goals from Cani and Manuel Trigueros gave Villarreal a 2-0 lead with just 25 minutes left to play, but two own goals and a strike from Lionel Messi kept the Catalans within four points of Atletico Madrid in their first game since the passing of former coach Tito Vilanova. However, the victory was marred after a banana was thrown at Barca full-back Dani Alves - the Brazilian responding brilliantly by picking it up off the turf and eating it. Villarreal grew in confidence as the first half progressed and came close to opening the scoring before the break, with Marc Bartra clearing Javier Ignacio Aquino’s strike off the line with keeper Pinto stranded. However, the hosts did take the ...
It was a very painful news which I found very hard to believe that the coach who won Barcelona's last La Liga tittle with a record 100 points lost the battle to cancer which has earlier cost him his job as a Barca manager. Tito Vilanova, the football world will miss you but Barcelona will miss you the more. Rest in peace
Ronaldo double eases Madrid past Osasuna 26 April 2014, 22:27 Real Madrid's rampant Cristiano Ronaldo scored at the start of each half to set up a 4-0 victory olowly Osasuna and put the pressure back on La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid on Saturday. Sergio Ramos and Daniel Carvajal also netted for Real who are second on 82 points, three behind Atletico before their trip to Valencia on Sunday with both teams having played 34 games. Barcelona, mourning the death of former coach Tito Vilanova on Friday, are now in third place with 81 points from 34 matches and travel to Villarreal on Sunday. Real did not risk Gareth Bale or Karim Benzema against Osasuna ahead of their Champions League semifinal second leg at Bayern Munich on Tuesday in which they hold a 1-0 advantage. But there was no holding Ronaldo, who only returned from injury in Wednesday's first leg against Bayern at the Bernabeu having been out since early April, as he cut in from the left wing and fired into the corner of the net after six minutes. Former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has died aged 45 following a battle with cancer that forced him to stand down at the end of last season, the club announced on Friday He took over at the Nou Camp ahead of the 2012-13 season having been Pep Guardiola's assistant during the most successful period in Barca's history in which they won three out of four La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues in 2009 and 2011. Barcelona went on to make the best-ever start to a La Liga season with 18 wins from 19 games but, in December 2012, Vilanova was diagnosed with cancer for the second time. It meant his assistant Jordi Roura had to take charge of the team on those occasions when he was undergoing treatment. At the end of the season Vilanova announced he was resigning to concentrate on his recovery from the illness
Former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has died of throat cancer at the age of 45. Vilanova led the Catalan club for a season after taking over from Pep Guardiola, but was forced to resign last summer because of ill health. Vilanova led Barca to their highest ever points total for a La Liga season during his single season in charge, their 100 points a joint record for the division with Real Madrid.

Former Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova has passed on today after losing a long-drawn battle with throat cancer. Vilanova was 45. Vilanova was Barcelona’s manager for the 2011-2012 season, succeeding Pep Guardiola and guiding the Catalan side to the La Liga trophy. He had resigned weeks prior to...
Tito Vilanova assistated Pep Guardiola in Barca's most succesful spell. He then took charge when Pep left. They made their best ever start in La Liga in the 2012/13 season winning the league 15 points in front of Real Madrid, despite having treatment for cancer which had come back for the second time. He left Barca at the end of that season. 45 is no age. Thoughts go to his family. Rest in peace Tito.
Tito Vilanova won 32 of his 38 games in La Liga (84.21%), more than any other coach in this millennium. Legend.
Tito Vilanova dies at the young age of 45 while battling throat cancer :( For those who don't know he was the former manager of barca who never let his side down even though he was battling cancer. He won us a La Liga with a 15 points lead from Real. Simply a Legend :(

Should Arsenal hijack Manchester United's bid for ex-Gunner? Barcelona midfielder Alex Song has been linked with a move back to England with Manchester United, but should Arsenal offer him a return to North London? Cameroon international song arrived at the Camp Nou from Barcelona in 2012, leaving Arsenal for £15m, and in doing so followed Thierry Henry, Alexander Hleb and Cesc Fabregas in making the move from the Emirates Stadium to the Catalan giants. But even whilst he's been limited to a bit-part role under Gerardo Martino and previous manager Tito Vilanova, Song has failed to impress and looks set to leave La Liga in the summer, with a move back to England strongly speculated - and, unsurprisingly, centre midfielder-needy Manchester United have been tipped to make a move for Song. Song, 26, has seen his perceived value plummet from £15m that Barcelona paid to just around £10m, and with that in mind, could be a relative bargain after the powerhouse midfielder impressed in the more physical nature o ...
BARCELONA - Real Madrid Meet El Clásico’s new coaches (FIFA.com) Friday 25 October 2013 The eyes of the football world will once again be fixed on Spain on Saturday, when La Liga leaders Barcelona take on Real Madrid. Three points separate the sides ahead of the 167th staging of El Clásico, which has lost none of its spice despite much of the tension surrounding the rivalry having evaporated this season, thanks in the main to changes on both benches. After a period in which off-field exchanges stoked up the animosity between these two old rivals, the presence in the dugouts of Gerardo Martino and Carlo Ancelotti has ensured that football, and nothing else, is the topic of debate in the build-up to this weekend’s showdown. The arrival of the vastly experienced duo has significantly reduced the hostility generated by the fixture in the last few campaigns. Indeed the only reminder of the recent past on Saturday will be the pre-match fan mosaic offering support to Tito Vilanova, Martino’s predecessor ...

European Match of the Weekend: Barcelona v Real Madrid The 167th La Liga 'Clasico' between Barcelona and Real Madrid at the Nou Camp on Saturday could be the ideal stage for Gareth Bale and Neymar to show they are worth a combined price tag of almost £135 million. Or, as is more likely, one of the most intense rivalries in football and a match watched by hundreds of millions around the world will again showcase the peerless talents of Barca's Argentine World Player of the Year Lionel Messi and Real's Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo. Leaders Barca dropped their first points of the campaign with a 0-0 draw at Osasuna last weekend and victory for Real, as well as providing a huge confidence boost, would put them level with their bitter rivals on 25 points from 10 games. Wales winger Bale replaced Ronaldo as the most expensive player in history when he joined Real from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of £86m in the close season, while Barca paid some £49m to lure Brazil forward Neymar from Santos. Bale's fi ...
Barcelona v Real Madrid: Neymar ready for El Clasico debut BARCELONA V Real Madrid Venue: Nou Camp Date: Saturday, 26 October Barcelona forward Neymar is excited about his first meeting with Real Madrid on Saturday. The Brazil international joined Barca from Santos in the summer for £48.6m and has scored three goals in 13 games. "The Clasico is the most important game for any player," the 21-year-old told the club website. "It's the match every player wants to play in. It's the game where each player wants to play his best football." Did you know? Neymar is Santos's leading scorer in the post-Pele era despite leaving them at the age of 21. He added: "This will be my first Clasico and I hope to have a great debut, preferably with a victory." Champions Barcelona lead La Liga, three points above third-placed Real, after dropping only two points from their opening nine games. And Neymar is not worried about the pressure, saying: "I think the anxiety is the same before any match. I understand that we're talki ...
BUT COACH DOES NOT WANT TO DISTURB PREDECESSOR Martino: "I would like to ask Tito several things" 'Tata' Martino believes this year's 'La Liga' will not just be a two-horse race. The Barcelona manager sees Atlético de Madrid as a major challenger. "Although others might not agree", the Argentine added. At an event organised by the 'Fórum Fundació', the Barça coach spoke about how it felt to be in charge of the squad. "Seeing my players train every day impresses me. When I watch them I learn more about the way they play. It's amazing to watch them in small circles of possession. I think it was Roura who told me one day that if you look away, you can follow them by the sound of the ball", he said. When asked about his relationship with Tito Vilanova, Martino noted: "We spoke on the phone one or two times before my first game. It would be good to speak more and I would like to ask him several things, but he has other things on his mind and I don't want to disturb him". In relation to his feelings on his ...
FACT: Tito Vilanova had the longest winning run in La Liga: 12 games consecutively. (20 October 2012 – 19 January 2013)
Barcelona set sights on Arsenal Centre-Back. Barcelona have reportedly set their sights on Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny according to a number of reports including one from Spanish source Sport.es. Barcelona are understandably keen to strengthen their defence as Tito Vilanova, though blessed with a myriad of attacking options, doesn’t have all that many experienced and capable centre-backs in his armoury, indeed he basically has Gerard Pique and veteran Carles Puyol. This has left the La Liga side frequently having to use Javier Mascherano as a back-up option. Given the history of Arsenal players moving to join the Catalan side; Thierry Henry, Alexander Hleb, Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song to name four, Gunners fans may well fear interest from Barcelona in arguably their most effective defender. Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are Arsene Wenger’s central defensive pairing of choice and the duo worked excellently in the final two months of last term, form that helped the North London side to secure ...
Could Arsenal make a surprise move for Thiago Alcantara? Arsenal have been linked with Cesc Fabregas repeatedly over the past few months, but so far he has given every indication he wants to stay at Barcelona. One Barcelona man whose future is even less certain is his midfield teammate, Thiago Alcantara . The 22-year-old is available for transfer for a cut-price €18 million, due to a clause in his contract being automatically activated after he did not appear over a stipulated number of minutes in La Liga this season, thought to be around the 60 per cent mark. He has headed off to the under-21 Championships with Spain where he is already impressing, showing just why the price tag on his head is such great market value. The midfielder has plenty to think about, with Tito Vilanova describing him before he headed off as the 'future of Barcelona' and Xavi also urging him to be patient. Manchester United have been linked with him, as have City and even Real Madrid, and he is said to be thinking about moving ...
Barcelona's transfer plans this summer Barcelona enjoyed a successful season in 2012-13. Tito Vilanova's team ran away with La Liga as they racked up 100 points to equal Real Madrid's record from the previous campaign and also reached the semi-finals of both the Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Anyone unhappy with that, the Catalan coach claimed last week, has a very short memory. However, the nature of the team's defeat to Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals left a bitter taste in the mouth for Barca as the realisation hit home that this is perhaps no longer the era they had been dominating. Seven goals shipped over two legs told a torrid tale for the Catalan club and served to highlight many problems which had been lingering behind Lionel Messi's incredible goalscoring stats. The Argentine's absence in key matches revealed Barca's unsatisfactory attacking alternatives, while problems in defence were not suitably addressed last summer and that cost Tito's team against the very best si ...
C.RONALD still can't make it. La Liga season review: Barca stayed united as Madrid fell to pieces Jun 05, 2013 READ TO THE VERY END. Barcelona claimed their fourth league title in the last five years. There will be two abiding memories of the 2012/13 La Liga season: Barcelona’s march to a record-equalling 100 points, and Real Madrid’s painful implosion under Jose Mourinho. The tone was set from the very opening day of the campaign, when Barca waltzed past Real Sociedad with Lionel Messi scoring twice in a 5-1 thrashing while Madrid laboured to a lacklustre home draw against Valencia. Within weeks, Madrid had lost against Getafe and Sevilla while Barca kept on piling up the wins. By the time the Catalan club suffered the worrying news that new manager Tito Vilanova required a second operation for throat cancer shortly before Christmas, the league title was already effectively sealed and Vilanova was able to head to New York for a three-month recovery programme safe in the knowledge that his team was in ...
The Blaugrana starlet is apparently unhappy with how little game time he has received under Tito Vilanova and has attracted interest from several Premier League clubs When asked about his Barcelona future at the tail end of last month, Thiago mused: "Every player is used to living with rumours and you just cannot let them affect you." It is just as well that the midfielder has such a positive attitude to the incessant transfer talk because he has had to put up with more speculation than most during his fledgling career. Europe’s elite have been chasing Thiago since he was a teenager. In the summer of 2010, he was linked with both Manchester and Chelsea before committing to Barcelona (and their B team) for another year, with the option of a further two, after being given assurances that he would improve upon his record of just two appearances for the senior squad in the preceding two seasons. Thiago ultimately featured 12 times in La Liga during the 2010-11 campaign, as well as making his Champions Leagu ...
Pellegrini confirms City talks to start soon Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that he is set to initiate talks with Manchester City soon and will listen to the offers on the table. Pellegrini managed his last game of the season with Malaga and has already confirmed his exit from the La Liga side. Pellegrini also quashed rumors that he has already signed up to be the next Manchester City manager and ESPN quote the Chilean saying, “When I reach an agreement I will tell you. I have an agreement to start conversations with Manchester City. Now the league is over we will start from Monday to look forward and to see where my future lies. Some rumours will be right, others won't, but I have kept my focus on Malaga until now.” Fabregas set for talks with Vilanova as Big Four snoop around As Premier League’s Big Four- Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea, prepare their summer transfer lists, Cesc Fabregas is ready for crunch talks with manager Tito Vilanova over his Barcelona future. Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas’ future will be decided next week, with Manchester United and Arsenal waiting for the green light to make a bid. The former Gunners captain will meet his current boss, Tito Vilanova, next week, after the La Liga season finishes this weekend, and will discuss his future at the Nou Camp, the Mirror claims. Frustration The Spanish midfielder has found himself frustrated this season after being left out of the side in the Champions League on several occasions, as well as many big games domestically. With next season being a World Cup year, the Spain star knows he has to play in as many games as he can. The Catalan club do not want to sell the 26-year-old, but new United boss David Moyes is a keen admirer of his talents and could offer the best deal to him, with Manchester City and Chelsea both also rumoured to be interested, the newspaper claims. However, his former side have first refusal on him, meaning that should any bid be made for his services, they would be offered him fi ...
Neymar announces Barca switch 26 May 2013 03:39 Neymar has revealed he is set to leave Santos for Barcelona, and will sign a five-year contract with the Liga champions on Monday. Brazilian club Santos had accepted two offers for the 21-year-old star, reported to be from Barcelona and Real Madrid, and the forward has now agreed terms with the Catalan giants. After scoring 107 goals in 176 domestic appearances for Santos, Neymar is one of the hottest properties in football and a move to either of the Spanish heavyweights was expected, although the player had suggested he would remain in Brazil until after the 2014 FIFA World Cup when his contract was due to expire. However, Barcelona have snapped him up a year early and he will join a star-studded squad alongside fellow Brazilians Dani Alves and Adriano at Camp Nou next season. Although they won La Liga this season by 13 points from Real Madrid, Barca coach Tito Vilanova will hope Neymar can provide another attacking threat for the club, as they struggled t ...
Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho lashed out at his critics and suggested he was not being given enough credit amid widespread expectation he is poised to abandon the La Liga club at the end of this season.
Thomas Rongen thinks Tito Vilanova, who won La Liga and made the Champions League semifinal in his first year at Barça, should get canned.

Tito Vilanova says unused substitute Lionel Messi felt uncomfortable in the lead- up to Barcelona's 3-0 loss to Bayern Munich. The Bundesliga champions completed a 7-0 aggregate win at Camp Nou on Wednesday to move into the final of the Champions League. Messi played a full game in the 4-0 loss in Germany but stayed on the bench in Barcelona, despite coming on to play just over 30 minutes in a 2-2 Liga draw against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday. "Messi felt good against Athletic Bilbao, but in the final minutes of the game at San Mames he noticed a strange feeling," Vilanova said. "He's not injured, but he felt he could pick up an injury. "Yesterday he trained, and also today ... but he did not feel well. He's an explosive player and he could break. So, maybe he could not help the team." Messi has scored 44 goals in La Liga this season and eight in the Champions League, and Vilanova decided against risking his star after losing the first leg 4-0. Arjen Robben and Thomas Mueller netted either side of a Gerar ...
The most successful Fc Barcelona manager in terms of trophies won is Johan Cruyff, who won four La Liga titles, one Copa del Rey trophy, three Supercopa de España, one UEFA Cup Winners' Cup trophy, one Uefa Champions League titles and one UEFA Super Cup in his 8-year reign as manager. Pep Guardiola was also the most successful manager in terms of trophies per year. In 2009, Guardiola's first year, Barcelona became the first club in Spain to win the treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey, and Champions League. Later they became the first football team ever to win six out of six competitions in a single year, thus completing the sextuple, comprising the aforementioned treble and the Spanish Supercup, European Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup.[1] Tito Vilanova took over from Guardiola in June 2012. He thinks the fact that he is dealing with footballers who are professionals and expertise gives him the right to be mindless and loosed about the team , he thinks he has nothing to teach those guys and lets them play ...

Barca 4/1 to wait for the win - Live on ITV: Tuesday 19.45: are 1/3 (Coral) to beat on the night in the Champions League but they’ll need patience. It seems strange to be saying that this current, usually infallible Barcelona team have lost three of their last five but that’s how the land lies as the La Liga leaders prepare for the second leg of their Champions League tie against AC Milan. One of their losses of course, came in the first leg in the San Siro and as a result Tito Vilanova’s charges have a 2-0 deficit to claw back if they are to stay in the hunt for European glory. On the face of it that looks like a big ask but bookies certainly aren’t writing off Lionel Messi and co, who are still just 5/4 at bet365 to qualify. With a two-goal advantage to protect, Milan are favourites at 8/11 (Blue Square) to move into the quarter final but with home advantage this time around, Barca are just 1/3 courtesy of Coral to win the match. The worry for the hosts is that they might get picked off on the b ...
Messi hurt by Barcelona setbacks" Lionel Messi has said Barcelona's recent defeats have hurt him and that everyone at the club needs to "give a little more" to turn things around. Barca's season had been a runaway success until mid-February, but has since come off the rails with defeats to Milan in their Champions League last 16 first leg and to domestic rivals Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey and La Liga. Messi opened his own Adidas-sponsored temporary museum in central Barcelona on Wednesday after having earlier attending a squad meal organised to improve team spirit. He said neither he nor his team-mates had enjoyed their recent form but that Tuesday's return leg against Milan at the Camp Nou was an ideal opportunity to start to put things right. "I am not sad, although I am hurting," the Argentine told reporters. "I do not like to lose out on important things, and neither does the team. "We now have an ideal moment to do it [put things right]. The motivation in the dressing room to want to be better ev ...
Barcelona midfielder lined-up for surprise Arsenal return!! Barcelona midfielder Alex Song could be in line for a surprising return to Arsenal this summer after failing to inspire at Camp Nou. According to a report in the Daily Express, Arsene Wenger could be ready to bring back the man he sold fo £15million last summer. Arsenal have been deploying Mikel Arteta in the defensive midfield role since Song’s departure and many have criticized Gunners boss Wenger for failing to adequately replace the Cameroon international. Song has struggled to break into the starting XI under Tito Vilanova and has drifted further from first team action since the Barça boss went to New York to undergo transfer treatment. The 25-year-old has made just ten appearances in La Liga all season and only three of those have come since the turn of the year. Arsenal are reportedly set to hand Wenger a bumper transfer budget in the summer in a bid to rejuvenate his squad for next season. The Gunners now have a tough task on their ha ...
News for F.C.Barcelona There has been much talk going around Barcelona after they have suffered loses at the hands of AC Milan and Real Madrid . Critics have gone on to say that their 11-point lead in La Liga is not enough and that these are signs of the end of an era. How accurate their prediction is only time will tell but in my opinion there is still plenty of time to recover. We must not forget that their Head Coach, Tito Vilanova, is suffering a cancer relapse and he is in New York getting the treatment for it. At such a time, it is nearly impossible for us to realise the true magnitude of the affect on the team. This is only affecting Barcelona tactically – asevident in their recent performances – but also psychologically. Remember, Tito is not the only one getting treatment for cancer. Eric Abidal has been missing from action for quite some time as well. On top of that, Barcelona has been playing with two lines of midfielders this season since David Villa has been left out for a majority of the ...
Cristiano Ronaldo came on and transformed the Clásico Alfredo Relaño | As.com It was a strange Clásico, and it ended in even stranger circumstances. Barcelona's complaints at the denial of a late penalty were vehement and bitter, yet in truth it would have been an ill-deserved point for the La Liga leaders. Last-minute penalty calls inevitably provoke the greatest fury, but seeing the visitors' ire as they berated referee Miguel Ángel Pérez Lasa, it was striking that precisely this passion was what had been missing from their performance at the Santiago Bernabéu. They set out for a draw and, as often happens in such cases, they came away empty-handed. Neither Thiago Alcántara nor David Villa grasped the opportunity of a return to the starting line-up, although their team-mates were no better. Barça seem to have gone completely off the boil, Lionel Messi included (though no matter how badly he plays, the Argentine is so good that he is almost incapable of not scoring at least once). Real Madrid lin ...
Surely, it's not the best of times for Fc Barcelona of Spain. After being humbled 2-0 by a defiant Ac Milan side in their Champions League round of 16 1st leg, it has been ignominiously followed by a Copa del Rey and La Liga defeats to their arch rivals Real Madrid. With 3 defeats in the space of two weeks, there's definitely no much smiles at Camp Nou at the moment. Stripped of Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova, Barcelona have not been able to get the groove and spark that characterised the tenure of Guardiola who opted out after the 2010/2011. In him, Barcelona had a coach blessed with tact, know-how, technical clout and charisma to tutore his galaxy of talented players even when the chips were down. He possessed that charm and aura that propelled the Blaugrana in his time. He was intelligent and smartly dressed. I digress. My point is that without an atom of doubt, this gentlemam who is now contracted to Bayern Munich has left a big hole that will take some time to be filled. Tito Vilanova, his assistan ...
Barcelona's Sunday celebrations started early with a 6-1 romp over Getafe, and ended late with a slip- up by second-placed Atletico Madrid which has all but ended the Spanish title race. Atletico's 2-1 defeat at Rayo Vallecano gave Barca a commanding 12-point lead with 15 matches to play, as third-placed champions Real Madrid languish another four points adrift. "It was an unusual time to play but we had a party in the stadium," the Catalan side's assistant coach Jordi Roura said after the midday kickoff at the Camp Nou, where more than 85,000 fans turned up. "The players were at an extraordinary level. They were intense from the first minute," added Roura, who is running the team while Tito Vilanova is receiving cancer treatment in New York Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in the sixth minute with his first league goal this season before Lionel Messi netted for a record-extending 13th successive La Liga game before quarter of an hour had been played -- his 35th in the competition from 23 appearances. Rosell: Picking Vilanova as coach was the best decision Barcelona president Sandro Rosell has praised the decision to replace Pep Guardiola with Tito Vilanova. Vilanova replaced Pep Guardiola at the end of the 2011-12 campaign following the latter’s decision to end his four-year spell at Camp Nou and Vilanova has since guided the Catalans to their best ever La Liga season. “Tito has talent, he understands what Barcelona mean, what La Masia is and what being Catalan means,” Rosell told reporters. “It was a brilliant decision by Zubizarreta to give him the job.” Rosell then discussed Xavi Hernandez, who signed a new contract on Monday. “He has just renewed his contract until 2016. He’ll be 36-years-old by then, but we believe this deal won’t be the last he signs with us.” inside spanish football, admin andrew
Real Madrid vs. Fc Barcelona. The Clásico. It’s a match that’s eagerly awaited by fans from all around the globe, and this evening the two giants of Spanish football will face off for the fourth time this season. Since Tito Vilanova took charge of the Barça bench the Blaugrana have defeated Real Madrid once (3-2, Spanish Super Cup away leg), lost once (2-1, Spanish Super Cup return leg) and tied once (2-2, Liga). Slow start in La Liga hasn’t stopped Madrid in the Cup Real Madrid’s La Liga campaign has been riddled with inconsistency. However, the Spanish capital-based side, despite trailing the Blaugrana by 15 points, are showing signs of the form that took them to last year’s domestic title. Since the beginning of the calendar year Los Blancos haven’t tasted defeat. Of their five games in 2013, they’ve won three (Valencia - twice -, and Getafe) tied two (Valencia and Osasuna). In addition, they’ve netted 12 goals and only conceded one. Ones to watch José Mourinho will be without five . ...
Messi, Suarez, Pardo & More As fabulous as Barcelona has been this season, we were reminded this weekend that Lionel Messi and company are mortals. Real Sociedad made sure of that, stunning La Liga leaders, 3-2, with a late goal by Imanol Agirretxe a minute into stoppage at home. But it wasn't that Barca went down to defeat, it was the way it was achieved. The Spanish powerhouse enjoyed a two-goal advantage late in the first half and eventually saw it evaporate, thanks in part to a red card to Gerard Piqué in the 56th minute. The defeat cut Barca's lead to second-place Atlético Madrid, 2-0 winners over Levante, to eight points. Barcelona fell to 18-1-1. "Losing a game had to come at some point," Messi told reporters. "We have to pick ourselves up immediately because of the cup match coming up." Messi was referring to Barca's Copa del Rey quarterfinal on Thursday. "It was inevitable we would eventually lose a game," Barca coach Tito Vilanova said. "It puts us in our place because there is still a long wa ...
Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova says he cannot criticise his players following their first La Liga loss of the season against Real Sociedad.
Real Sociedad 3 Barcelona 2 DEFEATED ... Lionel Messi's Barcelona were humbled by Real Sociedad Published: 47 minutes ago Lionel Messi scored but could not prevent 10-man Barcelona slipping to their first La Liga defeat of the season. First-half goals from Messi and Pedro put the visitors in firm conrol against their mid-table opponents. But Real Sociedad winger Gonzalo Castro netted either side of defender Gerard Pique being given his marching orders as Barca blow their advantage. Barca have run away with La Liga with Tito Vilanova at the helm. Will he be offered the United job? No.
Daring Pep! Now is the time for Guardiola to prove his mettle. Events since he left Barca with Tito Vilanova in charge shows that Pep's achievement at Camp Nou is nothing out of the ordinary. Tito has taken the same team on an unprecedented run of wins dropping just 2 points all season in the La Liga race. With the title almost wrapped up and stakes in all other remaining competition including the Uefa's Champions League, Vilanova only needs time to prove that Guardiola's achievements while in charge of Barca, was down to the quality of players in the team. He has every opportunity to prove us wrong from July as he sojourn into the Allianz Arena with the Bavarians. Simply why Mou has the edge. Till then!

Malaga 1-3 Barcelona: Barcelona deny Malaga a third place spot Barcelona travelled to Andalusia to take on Malaga in what would be the first of three meetings between the two sides over the span of ten days and came away with three points, despite a last gasp goal by Los Boquerones. By Tom Conn In what had been a weekend of rather unspectacular matches, this promised to be a duel of two talented clubs seeking to cement their respective places in the league table. Malaga were thought to be the underdogs, despite playing at home, and sought to break Barcelona’s record-breaking undefeated La Liga run. Malaga manager, Manuel Pellegrini got a major boost by the return of French international defensive midfielder, Jeremy Toulalan, who has battled injuries throughout the season. Meanwhile Barcelona manager, Tito Vilanova, fresh off his trip to New York to receive a second opinion on the progression of his cancer treatment returned to the bench, thus adding more motivation to an already talented and motivated B ...

Spanish La Liga Team of the Week * Barcelona welcomed manager Tito Vilanova back to the team in perfect fashion as they comfortably beat Espanyol 4-0. With the win, the Blaugrana extended their lead at the top of the La Liga table to 11 points as Atletico Madrid fell behind in the race for the title after they could only draw 1-1 with Mallorca. Jose Mourinho’s choice to drop Iker Casillas again almost backfired after replacement goalkeeper Antonio Adan got himself sent off early in the game, but star forward Cristiano Ronaldo was on hand to spare Real Madrid’s blushes as they ran out 4-3 winners over Real Sociedad. Elsewhere, Real Betis took a giant step towards securing Champions League football next season with a hard earned 2-1 win over Real Zaragoza, Sevilla had to dig deep to see off Osasuna 1-0 and Levante added to struggling Athletic Bilbao’s woes, with the Granotes comfortably beating Los Leones 3-1. Elsewhere, Mourinho, Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova were all beaten to the coach of the year gong by Atletico Madrid boss, the former Argentina international Diego Simeone. Barcelona Demand £16m for Arsenal Target - Report Arsenal are considering a transfer for Barcelona striker David Villa but will have to pay £16m to sign Spain's record goal scorer, according to the Daily Mail. The former Valencia forward was injured in last year's Fifa Club World Cup and has struggled to impose himself in Tito Vilanova's line-up this season, starting only six games in La Liga. An earlier IBTimes UK report linked Arsene Wenger with a January move for the striker but it was believed the Frenchman offered only a loan deal initially, with the option to purchase at the end of the season. However, these latest reports, if true, will likely end Wenger's interest in Villa; the striker is 31 years old and it, admittedly, makes little sense to pay so much for a forward in the twilight of his career.

Valladolid v Fc Barcelona Preview – Team News, Tactics, Lineups & Predictions By Anustup Sikdar on December 21, 2012 VALLADOLID v Fc Barcelona José Zorrilla, Valladolid 22 December, 2012; 18:00 hrs CET *** Barcelona manager, Tito Vilanova, is suffering with a relapse of the cancer in the parotid saliva gland that was first diagnosed in November 2011. Subsequently he has stepped down till his recovery and the man in charge is Jordi Roura, Vilanova’s assistant. Guardiola’s team too had been plagued by major illnesses (Eric Abidal and Vilanova) and injuries (Villa and Afellay) and that had affected the team in the quest for the fourth consecutive La Liga title in the 2011-12 season. This team seems to be no exception. However, under Roura, the sense of continuity will be there as the latter is aligned to Barca’s philosophy to the core. Vilanova first succumbed to the problem last November and a recent check-up revealed that the cancer had returned. And as reported by the official club website, Vilan ...

La Liga weekend Preview Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema has warned runaway leaders Barcelona his side are not going to relinquish their Primera Division title without a fight. Madrid slumped 13 points adrift of Barca on Sunday after being held to a home draw by struggling Espanyol and then seeing Tito Vilanova's men brush aside second-placed Atletico Madrid 4-1 at the Nou Camp. Madrid coach Jose Mourinho admitted after the Espanyol game that it would be "practically impossible" to now retain their title, and with Barca having dropped only two points all season, it is tough to see how the nine-time European champions can claw back the difference. However, if they do end up losing their crown to Barca, Madrid will be determined not to hand it to their arch rivals on a platter. Benzema told France Football magazine: "I hope we can give chase to Barca. It will be tough, but we haven't said the final word on this." Madrid will be desperate to make amends for their Espanyol setback and end 2012 on a winning n ...

Tito Vilanova, who have led Barca to its best ever start in La Liga, will now undergo surgery after a cancer relapse.
Barcelona achieved a prestigious 4-1 victory against Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou in Matchday 14 of La Liga. Adriano, Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi (double) scored the goals for the Blaugrana, who enjoyed 74 percent of possession and attempted 11 shots, six of them on target. This result helps Tito Vilanova's side extend the lead at the top of the table to nine points over Atletico and 13 over Real Madrid. Colchonero coach Diego Simeone came to the Camp Nou with the unsurprising idea of dropping deep, placing two solid lines of four in the width of the edge of the penalty area and allowing his two strikers to wait for eventual counterattacking chances upfront. At that point, Barcelona knew that the only way to win would be to tire Atletico out by constantly asking questions of their defenders while patiently applying the pass-and-move philosophy. Such is the level of expectation on his shoulders that it can be argued that, despite scoring twice, Lionel Messi had a relatively quiet game by his standa ...

Camp Nou awaits Messi-Falcao clash * Two of the world's best strikers collide this weekend as Barcelona and Lionel Messi meet Atletico Madrid and Radamel Falcao in a top-of-the-table La Liga clash. The South American duo have lit up La Liga this season with a combined 39 goals after just 15 games. Argentina star Messi has weighed in with 23 of those to help his tally for 2012 swell to a record-breaking 88 and counting, while Colombia hitman Falcao has 16 league goals to his credit - five of which came in last weekend's demolition of Deportivo La Coruna. Messi's goals have been crucial to Barca's flying start to the season under Tito Vilanova, with the Catalans still unbeaten ahead of Saturday's encounter with a side who trail them by six points after losing two of their last six matches. Despite Messi's searing form, Atletico head to the Nou Camp in bullish mood with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois boldly telling reporters: "Do I fear Messi? No, no, I am not afraid of anyone. "He is a great player and we resp ...
Barcelona are interested in a surprise deal for Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez, fanatix has learnt. Officials from the La Liga giants are understood to have spoken to United about the possibility of signing the Mexican in January – with the Red Devils not interesting in entertaining offers. Even so, Barca are ready to test United’s resolve with a £15m bid for the 24-year-old, who is considered the perfect replacement for ageing Spaniard David Villa. SOURCE: Fanatix This is very interesting indeed. Barcelona rely heavily on Lionel Messi for an end product, this is hardly news clearly. However the Catalan side would have hoped that the likes of David Villa, Alexis Sanchez and Pedro could help out and prevent the Argentine shouldering the goal-scoring burden pretty much single- handedly, but as yet that is not the case. As such Tito Vilanova could well do with a proven goal-scorer who can help convert the plethora of chances that are created by Xavi, Iniesta and co. Perhaps Javier Hernandez ...
Barcelona forward Lionel Messi broke Gerd Muller's record of 85 goals in a calendar year as his brace helped Tito Vilanova's side to a 2-1 victory at Real Betis in La Liga.
Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova says he is not trying to compete with former mentor Pep Guardiola, despite having set a new La Liga record.
"We have a long way to go," says manager Tito Vilanova. But the La Liga season may already be over: via
Despite dropping points only once this season, and currently sitting 11 clear of Real Madrid in the table, Tito Vilanova refused to say the race for La Liga supremacy is over despite their impressive form.
Barcelona boss Tito Vilanova has stressed that La Liga title race is not over, despite his side opening up an 11-point gap to Real Madrid.
Tito Vilanova, 8 -- With 37 out of a possible 39 points won so far, Pep Guardiola's successor has officially equalled La Liga's best-ever start. Credit must be given to a confident newcomer who has managed to keep this group of players hungry for victory, eager to improve and ready to compete for reaching even higher heights. Fielding the first ever La Masia eleven will also go down as one of the proudest moments in over 100 years of Blaugrana history.
Liverpool target Barcelona and Atletico Madrid stars Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez Liverpool are lining up an ambitious La Liga double swoop for Atletico Madrid winger Arda Turan and Barcelona star Alexis Sanchez. Brendan Rodgers' side have scored just nine times in seven Premier League games so far this season - with five of those coming in the win at Norwich. And Rodgers, who sanctioned the loan departure of club record signing Andy Carroll to West Ham earlier this year, has seen his attacking options reduced once more following the news that Fabio Borini suffered a fractured foot. And according to reports in Spain, Rodgers despatched scouts to Turkey's recent 1-0 World Cup qualifying defeat at home to Romania in order to keep an eye on Turan, who is a self-confessed Liverpool fan. The 25-year-old, who joined Atletico Madrid last year, was heavily linked with a switch to Anfield during his time at former club Galatasaray. Another player on Rodgers' radar is Chile international Sanchez. The 23-year-old i ...

Vilanova keen to keep run going: Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova says his side are under pressure to maintain their excellent form in La Liga.
LA LIGA PREVIEW Real Madrid hope Cristiano Ronaldo will be fit for Saturday's visit of Athletic Bilbao, which follows Barcelona's clash with Real Zaragoza. Prolific Portuguese forward Ronaldo, who has already scored 19 goals in all competitions for Real this season, suffered a nasty eye injury against Levante in the Primera Division last week. A large cut opened up above the player's eye after he was caught by defender David Navarro's elbow early in the match. He played on after treatment - and scored - inthe 2-1 win but later had headaches and dizzy spells and missed Portugal's midweek friendly in Gabon. Jose Mourinho would not want to be withouthis key forward at the Bernabeu as Real look to keep pace with the top two sides in La Liga. After a slow start, Real have climbed to third after winning their last four matches but still trail leaders Barca by eight points and are fivebehind city rivals Atletico Madrid. Sami Khedira and Karim Benzema are also hoping to prove their fitness after recent injuries. ...
Tito Vilanova has taken the time to praise Lionel Messi in the wake of Barcelona's 4-2 La Liga win over Mallorca at the weekend
Italian source CalcioMercato today report that Barcelona are preparing a hopeful January move for Man United centre-back Nemanja Vidic. The Serbian international is currently sidelined and not due to return to action before Christmas but this hasn’t stopped Tito Vilanova earmarking a move for the Old Trafford defender. Sir Alex Ferguson has seen his side rocked by injury and poor form and would have been glad to see his back-four register a rare clean sheet against a toothless Arsenal side on Saturday and the Scot will be more than aware that Vidic is perhaps Man United’s most consistent performer and as such will not be a player he would consider selling anytime soon. With Chris Smalling and Phil Jones also out of action and Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans not exactly covering themselves with glory thus far this season, Man United have struggled for form at the back and if anything Ferguson is likely to look to strengthen his defence and not sell any of those in his current squad. Barcelona top La Liga ...
This season (2012/2013) is the best start for FCBarcelona in La Liga in its history under Tito Vilanova.
Barcelona vs Deportivo in words:- Barcelona made it 12 matches unbeaten in La Liga courtesy of an astonishing 5-4 victory over Deportivo at the Riazor on Saturday evening, in a thrilling match that saw six goals scored before half-time. Well-taken strikes from Jordi Alba, Cristian Tello and Lionel Messi made it 3-0 to Tito Vilanova's side inside 20 minutes, before Pizzi reduced the deficit with a penalty. Alex Bergantinos then beat Valdes with a half- volley from distance before Messi made it 4-2 with a low finish from 15 yards shortly before the break. Pizzi grabbed his second with a fine free-kick shortly after half-time before Barcelona's Javier Mascherano was sent off for a second yellow card after an altercation with Riki. Messi completed his hat-trick with an explosive run and finish in the 77th minute, but there was still time for more drama as Alba sent a volley past his own goalkeeper Victor Valdes to make it 5-4.
A Lionel Messi hat trick only told half of the story as Barcelona held off a plucky Deportivo La Coruna in a captivating La Liga match at Riazor. It looked to be a one-sided affair when the league leaders raced into a three-goal lead through Jordi Alba, Cristian Tello and Messi after just 18 minutes. However, Depor replied with a Luis Pizzi penalty and an Alex Bergantinos goal before Messi struck again to put Barca back in the driver's seat. Pizzi's second of the match then set the nerves jangling once more and the dismissal of Javier Mascherano gave the visitors further food for thought until Messi made it 5-3 with his treble. The excitement did not stop there, though, and an own goal from Alba brought Depor back within touching distance of their opponents with 11 minutes remaining. However, despite their best attempts to grab a deserved equaliser, their luck ran out as Barca held on for the points. Barca coach Tito Vilanova had left influential midfielder Xavi on the bench for the match, but his absence ...
Luis Aragones believes Real Madrid could still catch Barcelona at the top of La Liga despite the eight-point advantage currently held by the Blaugrana. The defending champions, who had a poor start to the domestic season, missed their chance to reduce the gap on Sunday when they drew with Tito Vilanova's league leaders. "There are a lot of games for Real Madrid to recover the points they need and for a team like Madrid nothing is lost," Aragones told O Jogo. Barca and Los Rojiblancos both sit on 19 points in the Liga table and Aragones has backed his former club to mount a title challenge of their own. "Atletico is stronger than in previous years," he added. "They can have a good season and be closer to their rivals, or even fight for the title if they can maintain this consistency." Aragones, who has not coached since leaving Fenerbahce in 2009, also left the door open when asked about a possible managerial comeback, saying that he remained "strong enough to return to work.
Real Madrid gaffer José Mourinho, said of the Camp Nou thriller: "It's the perfect result for the game. It was very good and the whole world was able to watch and enjoy it. You didn't know who was going to win right up to the last minute. We had the opportunity to score the 2-3 and they the 3-2". "La Liga is as it was, I'm very pleased with my team and the world is happy. It was a great game, Real Madrid is a respectful club and it doesn't talk about unawarded penalties", Mou said. On Cristiano and Messi he said: "Saying which one's the best should be banned because those two are from another planet. I would like my player to win the Ballon d'Or because he has been a champion in the toughest league in the world but they're both fantastic". Pepe, however, criticized the Barça players: "They are very dramatic. You all saw it. I didn't touch Iniesta and you saw how he went down but we're used to it". Tito Vilanova replied to the Real Madrid centre-back and summarized the game: "We could make a video for Pe ...
Barcelona hosts Real Madrid in La Liga's first El Clasico on Sunday, and Leo Messi still says there is no "I" in team:
Barcelona may well win La Liga, but Real Madrid are becoming the better team Tito Vilanova's team remain eight points clear of Barca after Sunday's 2-2 but Jose Mourinho's men no longer fear the Catalans and are looking more and more like the stronger side Oct 8, 2012 9:00:00 AM COMMENT By Ben Hayward | Spanish Football Writer Winners and losers. Barcelona's 2-2 draw at home to Real Madrid in the Camp Nou Clasico on Sunday sees the Catalans remain in control of the Primera Division as they retain their eight-point advantage on Jose Mourinho's men. Already, Barca look like winning La Liga. But already, they appear to be losing their domestic dominance following the departure of Pep Guardiola. The tidy transition from Pep to Tito had seen the new man steer his side to six straight successes in La Liga, but the key tests come in the very biggest matches and having lost the Spanish Supercopa to Madrid over two legs in late August, Barca were unable to put their fiercest foes to the sword on Sunday, either. Michael Cox previews the first La Liga clash between Tito Vilanova and Jose Mourinho.
More than ever, tonight's Barcelona-Real Madrid was a shootout between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The two best players in the world left their stamp on a game that was at once an all-out battle between two top sides and a head-to-headshowdown. In the end, the spoils were shared both in terms of the overall scoreline (2-2) and the Messi-CR7 bout. Braces from Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo saw La Liga's 'Clásico' end all square, leaving things as they were in the league table, with Barcelona retaining its eight-point lead over 'Los Blancos'. Tito Vilanova's makeshift defence struggled in the first half, in which Mourinho's side threatened to deliver a knockout blow when, after setting up Cristiano for the opener, Karim Benzema crashed a drive off the near post. Had the Frenchman found the net, the whole complexion of the game could have been different. It was not to be and a major slip-up from Pepe gifted Barcelona a lifeline, the Portuguese centre-back mistiming his jump in the box to leave Mess ...
Who reigns supreme as the best footballer on the planet, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi? It’s the age-old debate really and we have the pleasure of indulging ourselves in it once more with the La Liga already underway and the El Clasico Super Copa finals beckoning. Over the past four years, the phenomenal duo has dominated the world of football in their individual quests to be the best. In that time, the Ballon d’Or has been won once by Ronaldo and thrice consecutively by Messi. The two will go head-to-head for the prestigious award this year as well, as Ronaldo tries to wrestle the award back from Messi. Messi seems geared up for this season after being well rested in the summer since scoring a mammoth 73 goals for his club during the course of last season. The Barcelona front man has the advantage over his adversary of not being involved in an international tournament over the summer and has been afforded sufficient time to recuperate. The results are already beginning to show as the forward bagg ...

Barcelona scored two late goals to come from behind to record a sensational 3-2 win over Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, thus maintaining their 100 per cent record in La Liga. With the Catalan giants in control during the early stages, it came as a surprise when the Rojiblancos went ahead through Piotr Trochowski in the 26th minute. From then on, though, the hosts grew in confidence and they doubled their advantage early in the second half through Alvaro Negredo. Cesc Fabregas pulled one back for Tito Vilanova's side in the 53rd minute and Sevilla were then reduced to 10 men for the final 20 minutes as Gary Medel was shown a red card. Barca pushed for more goals and they got them, with Fabregas netting his second before a David Villa strike saw the visitors make it six wins from six games so far this season. Despite being away from home, Barca instantly asserted themselves on their opposition by retaining the ball and producing some spectacularly intricate football. One such moment led to their firs ...

*** yeah!!! Last night, Barça made a brilliant and praiseworthy comeback in a thrilling encounter against the same team who defeated R. Madrid some time back. Tito Vilanova's men were down by 0-2 till the 53rd minute when Cesc Fàbregas pulled one back for the Blaugrana. Barça never lost hope and continued bombarding, even when the clock seemed to be in Sevilla's favour. Eventually, in the final minutes of normal time, Fàbregas netted his second, salvaging a point for the Catalan giants. But, second half substitute, David Villa was to be satisfied with nothing but in taking home all three points as he led Barça to clinch victory from the jaws of death in the dying seconds of the game. With this, FCB continues their 100% start to the season, topping the BBVA La Liga table winning all of the six games played so far.
Arsene Wenger has backed former protege Alexandre Song to make an impact at Barcelona, as the Cameroon international continues to acclimatise himself to life at Camp Nou. The midfielder, who played under the stewardship of the French coach for seven seasons, was criticised by sections of the media for his performance in the Catalans' 3-2 Champions League victory over Spartak Moscow last week. Nevertheless, Wenger maintains Song has the quality to succeed in La Liga, and has issued advice to coach Tito Vilanova about how to best employ the Cameroon international. "He will succeed at Barca, and something tells me that he will play in central defence,"
Tito Vilanova has the led the first team to one of its most spectacular starts ever, with five wins out of five against Real Sociedad (5-1), Osasuna (1-2), Valencia (1-0), Getafe (1-4) and Granada (2-0). On Saturday they are away to Sevilla, and a win there would equal the club’s record start of six wins in a row. Barça got off to a six-match winning start in 2009/10, 1997/98 1990/91 and 1929/30. In all but one of those cases, they went on to win the championship. 99 point season The most recent was two years ago, the second season under Pep Guardiola and the year of the six titles. In 2009/10, Barça got off to a flying start in La Liga with wins against Sporting (3-0), Getafe (0-2), Atlético Madrid (5-2), Racing Santander (1-4), Malaga (0-2) and Almeria. In Game Seven they drew at Valencia (0-0), and ended the championship with a record 99 points.

Head Coach Tito Vilanova has revealed Lionel Messi may not feature in Saturday's La Liga clash at Getafe.
- The Premier League has confirmed that pre-match handshakes will take place between Chelsea and Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road on Saturday. - Darren Fletcher is on the verge of making his Manchester United comeback following ten months on the sidelines, after being named in the squad for Saturday's home match against Wigan. - Everton manager David Moyes has confirmed that midfielder Darron Gibson will be out for up to five weeks after picking up a thigh strain. - FIFA has decided to extend the ban handed to Juventus coach Antonio Conte to cover all matches, a move which rules out his involvement in his side's Champions League campaign starting next week. - Barcelona's plans for Saturday evening's tricky La Liga game at Getafe have been again disrupted by injuries sustained by players away on international duty, according to Head Coach Tito Vilanova. - David Moyes has warned Marouane Fellaini to watch his words after the midfielder cast doubt over his Everton future.
What does not take much statistical analysis to figure out is that Barcelona are Europe's current best team. Their success over the past few years has been astounding - three consecutive La Liga titles and two Champions League titles in three years prior to last season. Like Spain at international level, Barcelona may lose the odd match, but over the course of a season their win percentage will be much higher, and they place themselves more consistently in positions to win trophies - in semi-finals and finals. Blokhin's right, the best team does not always win, but Barcelona prove they do so with unerring regularity. As a result they sit atop the Euro Club Index, almost 100 points clear of La Liga rivals Real Madrid. In third and fourth place sit last year's top Premier League clubs, Manchester United and Manchester City respectively. Last season's Champions League finalists find themselves in fifth and sixth, although Chelsea sit beneath Bayern Munich, despite their penalty shootout victory. The only oth ...

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has praised Alex Song in the wake of the Cameroon international's La Liga debut against Valencia on Sunday.
With last Thursday’s first leg at Camp Nou having ended in a 3-2 Barca victory, Madrid took the title on away goals after a 4-4 aggregate draw. All the action came in an exciting first half, where Lionel Messi replied with a brilliant free-kick for Barcelona, who had previously lost Adriano to a straight red card for a last-man foul on Ronaldo. It was a timely success for Madrid, who have already fallen five points behind arch rivals Barca in La Liga after a draw and a loss in their first two league games. “The team went out well from the start and created chances, got the goals and then they (Barcelona) went down to 10 men,” said Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka. “After all that, the result was a lot closer than we expected, but we’re happy to lift the trophy. We got a reaction from our players and that’s the important thing.” Barca coach Tito Vilanova said he was pleased with his players’ response after a difficult start.

Messi: Barcelona never panicked versus Osasuna The Argentine has admitted that it was not an easy game for the Blaugrana, but has made it clear that they always remained calm By Stefan Coerts Aug 27, 2012 7:05:00 AM Lionel Messi has stressed that Barcelona were always confident of getting a good result in Sunday's La Liga match away against Osasuna. The Catalans were trailing 1-0 for the majority of the game, but two goals from the Argentine deep into the second half eventually helped Barca to a 2-1 victory, much to the satisfaction of the goalscorer. "We did not panic and always remained calm. We found a way to respond to their goal. We were able to build play from the back and we did not lose our heads. Luckily, the goals came in the end," Messi was quoted as saying on the club's official website. "It’s always hard for us to win here at Osasuna. Tito Vilanova had already warned us of that before the match. "What’s truly important is that we stay on this course - we have to keep on winning. We knew t ...
Barcelona escaped from the Estadio El Sadar with a 2-1 victory over Osasuna in their La Liga encounter on Sunday. The Blaugrana were second best for much of the game and fell behind in the 17th minute to a goal from Joseba Llorente. Their woes continued in the second half as Osasuna kept them on the back foot, while coach Tito Vilanova was sent to the stands in the 73rd minute for protesting to the linesman. However, a controversial equaliser from Lionel Messi brought them back into the match moments later and Osasuna captain Patxi Punal was sent off for protesting the goal. The Argentine would pop up once again four minutes later to poke home the winner and give the Catalans a win that they scarcely deserved, after a spirited and purposeful performance from the home side. Vilanova rested Xavi from the start, with David Villa also taking his place on the bench as Cristian Tello and Alexis Sanchez started up front alongside Lionel Messi. Preseason has begun at Fc Barcelona, and with Tito Vilanova's first official game in charge just around the corner, the hunt for fresh young talent is well underway. Jordi Alba was the first big-name signing to grace the Nou Camp, and could well make his debut in the friendly with Hamburg next week.
