Memorial service held for Vilanova A memorial service took place on Monday for former Barcelona head coach Tito Vilanova, who died on Friday. Vilanova, who served as assistant to Pep Guardiola before taking charge of first-team affairs at Camp Nou, passed away at the age of 45 following a lengthy battle with throat cancer. After succeeding Guardiola for the 2012-13 season, Vilanova guided Barca to the Liga title with a club-record haul of 100 points. However, his sole campaign in charge was interrupted by illness and he was forced to step down last July. The club confirmed on Friday that Vilanova had passed away and mourners - including his family - gathered at a packed Barcelona Cathedral on Monday to pay their respects. Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona Lluis Martinez Sistach led the ceremony, which was attended by members of the club's playing staff, including Carles Puyol, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Victor Valdes. Representatives from the board of directors were also present, with president Josep Maria B ...

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol says the team will try to bounce back quickly after Tito Vilanova’s sudden resignation.
Barcelona set sights on Arsenal Centre-Back. Barcelona have reportedly set their sights on Arsenal centre-back Laurent Koscielny according to a number of reports including one from Spanish source Sport.es. Barcelona are understandably keen to strengthen their defence as Tito Vilanova, though blessed with a myriad of attacking options, doesn’t have all that many experienced and capable centre-backs in his armoury, indeed he basically has Gerard Pique and veteran Carles Puyol. This has left the La Liga side frequently having to use Javier Mascherano as a back-up option. Given the history of Arsenal players moving to join the Catalan side; Thierry Henry, Alexander Hleb, Cesc Fabregas and Alex Song to name four, Gunners fans may well fear interest from Barcelona in arguably their most effective defender. Koscielny and Per Mertesacker are Arsene Wenger’s central defensive pairing of choice and the duo worked excellently in the final two months of last term, form that helped the North London side to secure ...
"Thiago's situation is still uncertain. The midfielder has played fewer minutes than he would have liked but Barcelona is aware of the quality of the player and Tito Vilanova said at a press conference that the player is ready to be a starter, perhaps in an effort to convince him to stay, because the decision will be in Thiago's hands. "Xavi has advised Thiago to be patient, pointing out that he had to do likewise when he was young. Indeed, we must not forget that the likes of Carles Puyol and Xavi himself were linked to Malaga in 1999, when they still did not feel like important members of the team, but Louis van Gaal persuaded them to stay. "Thiago is happy in the team, but a few days ago he made it clear that he will make a decision after the Confederations Cup. "The Premier League seems to be a good choice for him because he could play a lot, but we must also remember that Xavi could need more rest next season, so Thiago would be required more; this may be the key to him staying at Camp Nou. "For now, ...
As we all saw in the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup, Barcelona's defense is not the strongest. Carles Puyol is getting up in age and a young center-back is needed. For whatever reason, Tito Vilanova is following Pep Guardiola’s steps of not giving the squad’s young CBs a shot at sufficient playing time. This past summer, Sandro Rosell tried to get Thiago Silva from AC Milan, only to fail. Silva was later sold to Paris Saint-Germain. Although Barcelona needs to give Marc Bartra and Marc Muniesa a fair shot at earning the CB spot for the future, perhaps a more experienced CB is needed. Enter Brazil’s Dedé. Dedé is a 24-year-old, 6’3” CB who plays for Brazil’s Vasco da Gama. He started his career at Volta Redonda and later moved to Vasco de Gama. In 2010, Dedé had a break out year as he was named the Brasileirão’s best right center back that year. AC Milan and Juventus have been previously rumored to be interested in Dedé’s services. Earlier this year, Dedé stated that he was not r ...
Milan will feel Barca wrath, says Puyol Barcelona captain Carles Puyol believes his side will respond with a win when they face AC Milan in the Champions League last-16 second leg. The 34-year-old said the Blaugrana can overturn the two-goal deficit from the first leg, citing a mental strength both on and off the field. "We have the recipe to come back and win," he told La Vanguardia. "The team has come through some tough tests, not just in a footballing sense," Puyol added, referring to the recent illnesses to defender Eric Abidal and coach Tito Vilanova. Barcelona have been criticised recently due to their lack of intensity without the ball, and Puyol admitted this aspect of their play needs to improve. "We need to re-apply the pressure. The most important thing about this team is the reaction when they lose the ball." And Puyol brushed off criticism over a perceived lack of unity in the dressing room, stating that the squad are as focused and professional as ever. "People invent possible reasons for th ...
Bernabéu is captain's happy hunting ground Puyol territory Carles Puyol is set to start at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday. The Barcelona captain will be an inspiration to his teammates, as the side has an incredible record - which even Leo Messi cannot beat - whenever the defender has featured at Real Madrid. In the last five years, every time Puyol has played in this fixture, Barça has won the game. This record has been intact since 7th May 2008 when the Catalan side lost 4-1 to 'Los Blancos'. Since then, Barça – under the guidance of both Pep Guardiola and Tito Vilanova – has played at the Bernabéu on eight occasions in four different competitions. Barça has won five of these eight matches, drawing twice and losing once. However, Puyol did not play in the team’s defeat and one of the draws. The defender did feature in the 1-1 league draw in the 2010-11 season. Nevertheless, one important thing must be pointed out. Puyol was substituted in the 57th minute of that particular game, when his ...
Barca stars back Guardiola's Bayern move Barcelona coaches and players have unanimously backed to their former coach Pep Guardiola's move to Bayern Munich. Guardiola, 41, has been without a club since leaving Barcelona at the end of the 2011-12 season as he sought time away from football. He will be in charge at the Bundesliga club from July, taking over from Jupp Heynckes, the Bavarians announced on Wednesday. Speaking after their side's 2-2 Copa del Rey quarter-final first leg draw with Malaga at the Camp Nou, Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova, sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta and players including Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano and Jose Pinto all welcomed the news. Vilanova said he had not known Guardiola's plans in advance, but was happy his friend was back in a football. "I am very happy that he is returning to football," he said. "I did not know where he was going as there was a confidentiality agreement. "I do not know how many teams or what kind of contracts he was offered, but I am sure they wer ...

Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has stated that the best way to support manager Tito Vilanova's cancer battle is to move forward on the pitch.
Barca to reward Adriano Barcelona are reportedly interested in offering a new contract to Brazilian full-back Adriano, as reward for his work so far this season. The 28-year-old, who signed for the Catalans in July 2010, currently has a deal with the club until June 2014. La Blaugrana are said to be impressed with the player’s improved fitness this term, in reaction to a number of previous injuries. Having lost five kilos in weight over the summer, Adriano’s versatility for the side shown so far under Tito Vilanova is also another reason why the club are understood to be keen to extend his contract. The player has a one-year option in his current deal and it is that, plus an improved wage, that Barca are reportedly eager to action. The club have a number of ongoing contract negotiations on the table, with talks started or due to start with Lionel Messi, Carles Puyol, Xavi Hernandez, Victor Valdes, Jose Manuel Pinto, Cristian Tello, Marc Muniesa and Gerard Deulofeu. football espana
Barcelona plot ambitious move to sigh dortmund trio Spanish source Sport.es claim that Barcelona are eyeing up three of Borussia Dortmund’s top talents as Nou Camp boss Tito Vilanova looks to strengthen his squad. The La Liga giants are keen on improving their defensive options, which are surprisingly threadbare and have left Argentine Javier Mascherano often having to fill in as a makeshift centre-back due to the lack of options available. This issue is all the more pronounced given that Gerard Pique has had injury issues and veteran Carles Puyol at 34 is clearly in the latter stages of his Barcelona career. Vilanova has offered youngster Marc Bartra more of a chance to prove himself but Barcelona have still struggled defensively this term. Despite sitting top of the table the Catalan side have only the sixth best defence in terms of goals conceded and have managed just four clean sheets in 14 league matches this season. With that in mind Barcelona’s interest in Dortmund centre-back pairing Neven Sub ...
Barcelona captain Carles Puyol makes his return from injury this evening as the Catalan side face Real Zaragoza at Camp Nou in the Spanish Primera Division. The Spain international has been out of action since suffering a dislocated shoulder against Benfica in the Champions League, but returns to the starting XI tonight and will partner Gerard Pique in central defence. There is another slightly surprising selection by Barca coach Tito Vilanova as Martin Montoya starts at right-back in favour of Dani Alves, with the Brazilian having to settle for a place on the bench. The integral midfield trio of the hosts features Xavi, Alex Song and Andres Iniesta. David Villa is rewarded for his current form by earning a start this evening. The former Valencia man has been in excellent form in the last few games and netted for Spain against Panama during the week. He will start on the left-hand side with Pedro and Lionel Messi making up the attacking frontline. Zaragoza start the match without Portuguese striker Helder ...
Barcelona manager Tito Vilanova has revealed that he is concerned about his defence ahead of tomorrow night’s clash with Celtic. The Catalan giants host the Scottish champions at the Nou Camp in their third Champions League fixture of the season and he is well aware that injuries to the likes of Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique, Daniel Alves, Sergio Busquets and Eric Abidal has his defence in a very shaky state. "Injuries are normally a headache for a coach but we have got what we have got. And all the players are at the right level to play for Barcelona," said Vilanova whose side conceded four goals in their 5-4 win over Deportivo on the weekend. "We would like to improve on everything and score more and concede less and we will try to do that. "But all Champions League games are complicated and I am worried because Celtic are very fast up front and they proved it against Spartak (when they won 3-2 three weeks ago). "They play good, counter-attacking football so we know they are dangerous. They are also good ...
Following on from the thrilling 4-5 win in the Riazor stadium, the players have begun their preparations for this Tuesday’s Champions League duel with Celtic in the Camp Nou victory away to Deportivo. The Catalan defender trained alongside the rest of his team-mates this afternoon ahead of Sunday's clash with Real Madrid Carles Puyol, who is recovering from injury, watched the training session on the sidelines with the ex-Blaugrana Rivaldo The team managed by Tito Vilanova trained behind closed doors this Saturday afternoon at the Camp Nou at 18.00, in what was the penultimate session before tomorrow’s showdown with Real Madrid. Without a doubt, the big news this afternoon was that Gerard Piqué returned to training with the group. Carles Puyol and Rivaldo watched the session from the sidelines. It’s worth noting that the Catalan defender picked up an injury in the Champions League match against Spartak Moscow. Medical tests confirmed that Piqué had sprained his left foot and that he’d miss at least two to three weeks of competitive play. Piqué started his recovery process on September 19 and today, 24 hours ahead of the Clásico, he was able to return to training. Final training session on Sun ...

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova is frustrated by having to reshuffle his defence after Carles Puyol dislocated his elbow against Benfica.
Barcelona captain Carles Puyol will miss Sunday's La Liga game against Real Madrid at the Nou Camp after dislocating his left elbow. Puyol, 34, was taken to hospital after Barcelona's 2-0 Champions League Group G win against Benfica on Tuesday. "We are waiting for more information but he will certainly miss the Clasico," Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova said. The club expect the Spain international to be out for eight weeks. Puyol landed awkwardly after jumping at a 78th-minute corner, and was eventually carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Alex Song. Alexis Sanchez opened the scoring in Lisbon after six minutes and Cesc Fabregas doubled their lead in the second half to leave Barca with a 100% record from their opening two Champions League games. Barcelona are eight points ahead of Real Madrid in La Liga after six matches.
The coach was left cursing his bad luck at Carles Puyol's injury, but nevertheless turned his attention to the Clasico
Sevilla v Barcelona Tito Vilanova's Barcelona will be aiming to equal their best ever start to a domestic campaign when they travel to Sevilla on Saturday night. The table-topping Blaugrana have picked up maximum points from their opening five league fixtures, but expect a stern test from the hosts who are unbeaten in La Liga. Sevilla coach Michel Gonzalez is boosted by the returns of Diego Perotti and Jose Antonio Reyes, who made a return to action in a charity match on Tuesday after recovering from calf and shoulder injuries respectively. However, the duo are unlikely to start and could well be handed a place on the substitutes bench. Barcelona will have to make do without the services of defensive duo Gerard Pique (ankle) and Carles Puyol (knee) for this crunch clash. However, Vilanova will be able to call on the services of midfielder Andres Iniesta, who returned to training recently after shrugging off a hamstring problem. Due to the continued absence of Pique and Puyol, the Barca coach is expected t ...

Barcelona’s Tito Vilanova says Alex Song and Sergio Busquets are capable of replacing the injured Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique.
It started with a win. Tito Vilanova's team kicked off their Champions League with victory at home to Spartak Moscow on Wednesday, coming from behind to win 3-2, just as Real Madrid had done 24 hours earlier against Manchester City. As usual, Barcelona's midield was majestic, and their attack astonishing. But it was hard to make a case for the defence. Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique are two of the world's best centre-backs, but when they are missing, it shows. The Barca captain is sidelined with a knee injury and unlikely to return for over a month, so when Pique departed with a knock in this game, it left the Catalans with a back line made up of Dani Alves, Alex Song, Javier Mascherano and Adriano. No wonder Victor Valdes looks nervous. Alves spends most of his time in the opposition half as an unorthodox winger and handed Spartak an equaliser as he inexplicably turned the ball past Valdes, while Mascherano's lack of pace had allowed Emmanuel Emenike to escape down the right in the first place. Song, to h ...

Vilanova: I am to blame if Fabregas is not at his best Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has spoken out about Cesc Fabregas' perceived poor form this season, and says he will shoulder some of the blame if he cannot coax better showings out of the midfielder. The former Arsenal man enjoyed a flying start to his career with the Blaugrana, but has suffered a noticeable dip in performance since the start of 2012. "He's a world-class player who would get into any team in the world," the 42-year-old was quoted as saying by AS. "At Barca, it just happens he has to compete with players who have been the best in the world in recent years in their positions. "I don't agree that Cesc has not been playing well. The coaches must also be held responsible. If I can't get the best out of him, you can't just blame the player - I must be to blame too." Meanwhile, Vilanova also announced his squad for Saturday's clash at Getafe, with Carles Puyol set to return and Jordi Alba due to miss out with tonsillitis, joining Andres Inie ...

La Liga: Messi's double gives Barca perfect start 21 Aug 11:38 am IST Messi Liga Madrid: Lionel Messi's double and a David Villa goal on his return from injury helped Barcelona hammer visitors Real Sociedad 5-1 to give new coach Tito Vilanova the perfect start to their La Liga campaign on Sunday. Carles Puyol and Pedro also scored as Barca claimed an immediate lead in the standings overarch-rivals Real Madrid who were held 1-1 at home by a feisty Valencia side. The champions had earlierdominated the match at the Bernabeu, but were frustrated by a new-look Valencia and some outstanding saves from goalkeeper Diego Alves. World Player of the Year Messi, who scored a league record 50 goals last season, carried on where he left off by settling Barca down with quick strikes to give them a 3-1 lead inside 15 minutes at the Nou Camp. David Villa scored in his first competitive appearance of the year and Lionel Messi netted a brace as Barcelona claimed a convincing 5-1 victory over Real Sociedad in new coach Tito Vilanova's Primera Division debut in the Nou Camp hotseat. Villa, who missed the second half of last season and Euro 2012 after breaking his leg in December, netted after appearing as a late substitute to complete the win as Barca showed it was business as usual despite this summer's departure of record-breaking coach Pep Guardiola. Earlier, during a frenetic start which saw four goals scored in the opening 16 minutes, Barca charged into a 3-1 lead with Carles Puyol - who also missed Spain's triumphant Euro 2012 campaign through injury - notching the first. Sociedad briefly drew level when Gonzalo Castro netted but Messi then struck twice in five minutes to put the home side two goals clear. Pedro Rodriguez then added a fourth before the break before Villa climbed off the bench to also get his name on the scoresheet as Vilanov ...
