Memorial service held for Vilanova A memorial service took place on Monday for former Barcelona Head Coach Tito Vilanova, who died on Friday. Vilanova, who served as assistant to Pep Guardiola before taking charge of first-team affairs at Camp Nou, passed away at the age of 45 following a lengthy battle with throat cancer. After succeeding Guardiola for the 2012-13 season, Vilanova guided Barca to the Liga title with a club-record haul of 100 points. However, his sole campaign in charge was interrupted by illness and he was forced to step down last July. The club confirmed on Friday that Vilanova had passed away and mourners - including his family - gathered at a packed Barcelona Cathedral on Monday to pay their respects. Cardinal Archbishop of Barcelona Lluis Martinez Sistach led the ceremony, which was attended by members of the club's playing staff, including Carles Puyol, Andres Iniesta, Xavi and Victor Valdes. Representatives from the board of directors were also present, with president Josep Maria B ...

Barcelona fans to revolt if starlet sold to Manchester United Fans in Catalonia not happy about the sale of the Thiago. The expected transfer of midfielder Thiago Alcantara from Barcelona to Manchester United this summer is set to make Barca fans revolt, reports Spanish newspaper Sport. ... sportthiago5 The Spain under-21 international has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford after being underused in a Catalan team brimming with talent – such as Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas. Yet the prospect of selling Thiago has stirred anger in the Barca fans, not at the player but at the hierarchy of manager Tito Vilanova and President Sandro Rosell. The supporters believe that by selling the 22-year-old Barca are giving the completely wrong impression about their priority to youth and plan to revolt if the deal goes through. Rosell has been an unpopular figure at the Nou Camp following the way he handled Eric Abidal’s departure from the club, with the defender feeling he was forced out shortly ...
Xavi Thiago Can Abort Transfer to Old Trafford Bola.net - The transfer of FC Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara to Manchester United could potentially fail, following the player's chances to replace Xavi Hernandez. Later rumored that the Red Devils have reached an agreement with the Spanish captain personally at Euro U-21 then. Release clause of 17 million pounds was approved by United, which also offers a higher salary than his current, which is 30,000 pounds per week. It is said to make camp Blaugrana fret, because Thiago is still needed in the future. And David Moyes plans first purchase at Old Trafford that was doomed to fail implemented. Guarantee of playing time as a factor called Thiago desire to leave the Nou Camp. However, with the increasingly aging Xavi, then the chance of playing for Thiago will obviously be greater. Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has joined Jose Mourinho in accusing Barcelona players Xavi and Andres Iniesta of sour grapes after the pair hit out at the former Bernabeu coach. Last week Xavi criticised the Portuguese coach's style of football and declared he "has left no legacy for the future", while Iniesta said the new Chelsea boss had "damaged Spanish football" due to his confrontational style. In his three years at Madrid Mourinho was the main antagonist in the rivalry between the two biggest clubs in Spain, most famously poking then Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova in the eye after a match in August 2011. Mourinho won Madrid's first league title for four years in 2012 and although Los Blancos lost out on the trophy to the Catalans last season, they overcame Vilanova's side in the Copa del Rey, the Spanish Super Cup and in their last league fixture. The former Inter boss hit out at Iniesta during his unveiling at Stamford Bridge yesterday, saying: "I damaged Spanish football by being ...
Barça ready to splash the cash on centre-back The €57 million fee to bring Neymar to Barcelona will not prevent the Catalan club from delivering the other signings Tito Vilanova has asked for. The club is prepared to back its coach to the hilt and is going to do everything in its power to strengthen the squad. This issue was discussed at the meeting of the club's board on Monday, before being hammered home by spokesman Toni Freixa yesterday. "I can't tell you how much we've earmarked for signings, because that could hinder the club, as anyone we approached would know how much we had to spend. But we'll do all the business we want to and Barcelona will bring in some first-class reinforcements this summer", Freixa stated. The club spokesman cited confidentiality agreements as he batted away questions about Neymar's signature and how the money will be split, while making it clear that the club has no intention of bringing forward the presidential elections, despite the recent reports to the contrary. Frei ...

Andres Iniesta admits that Barcelona are struggling in the absence of coach Tito Vilanova and defends Lionel Messi after Real Madrid loss
The Blaugrana star says he hopes to improve with every season, and admitted working without Tito Vilanova - who is recovering from cancer treatment - can be difficult Andres Iniesta has revealed he would like to play alongside Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos and Malaga attacker Isco at Barcelona. The Blaugrana star has played alongside the Blancos defender in the Spain national side for years, while the Rosaleda starlet has been impressive form this season. When asked at the sixth edition of the World Sports Gala who he would like to bring to Barcelona, Iniesta rooted for two compatriots. "I’ve always liked Sergio Ramos,” Mundo Deportivo quoted him as saying. “He's very impressive. And I like to look at the upcoming players, such as Isco." Iniesta added he misses working with Pep Guardiola, who left Camp Nou as Head Coach last summer, and admitted it is difficult working with current boss Tito Vilanova being absent due to his recovery from cancer treatment. “I do miss Guardiola because I like wo ...
BARCELONA TO FACE Real Madrid IN THE SEMI FINALS OF COPA DEL REY barcelona achieved an intriguing 2-4 win (4-6 in aggregate) against Malaga at La Rosaleda in the return leg of the Copa del Rey quarterfinals. Pedro Rodriguez, Gerard Pique, Andres Iniesta and Lionel Messi scored the goals for the Blaugrana, who attempted 15 shots, nine of them on target and one that hit the post. Despite having the better chances and a higher possession percentage (70%), the Catalans never really looked fully comfortable due to the high pressure Malaga applied across the whole pitch, working as a unit when dispossessed. Barcelona did score early, but it was disappointing to see the team dropping the momentary advantage once again, proving how vulnerable the defence can be when players are not fully committed to closing spaces as tightly and quickly as possible. Despite that fact, the Blaugrana players fought tirelessly to achieve a valuable win which keeps the Catalans’ hope of retaining the title alive. The players were ...
Tito Vilanova might opt to rest Andres Iniesta tonight as part of the new schedule planned to reduce his Injuries.
The Barcelona star scored both of his side's goals in a 2-1 win at Real Betis to beat the 40-year-old record. "The record is great for what it means, but the most important thing is that the team won and that we maintained the distance with the teams behind us," Messi told the club's website. "When the year starts the objective is to win it all with the team, personal records are secondary." "I'll try to score more goals to make it more difficult for the next player that tries to break it." The 25-year-old drew level with Mueller's mark after 16 minutes with a trademark diagonal run and left-foot finish. It took him just nine more minutes to take the record as his own. This time he profited from one of his chief assist-makers, Andres Iniesta, whose clever backheel found Messi in the merest of space only he needs to find the net with his left foot. Barca coach Tito Vilanova said on his team's website: "We're pleased that Messi helped us out with his two goals and that he broke Mueller's record. "He still h ...
Barcelona picked up their 17th win of the season with an emphatic 4-0 victory over their Catalan neighbours Espanyol at Camp Nou. A sublime opening half hour from Barca did all the damage, with Xavi opening the scoring after just 10 minutes. Pedro soon netted a double before Lionel Messi slid home from the spot, after Cesc Fabregas had been brought down in the area. The winter break proved unable to disrupt the Blaugrana's typically flowing football as they took command of the game from the first second, seemingly buoyed by the return of Tito Vilanova to the bench after surgery. Operating from the left, Andres Iniesta was dancing past the Espanyol defence with ease and it only took 10 minutes for him to create the opening goal. Having been picked out in space by Messi, Iniesta drilled a low cross into the area which Xavi coolly slotted home unmarked. The hosts were unrelenting and after Kiko Casilla made a great save to keep out Iniesta in the 13th minute, it took just another couple of minutes for the se ...

Barcelona 4-0 Espanyol: Pedro brace gives Barca perfect start to 2013 Four goals in the first half saw Barcelona cruise to a derby win over Espanyol as Tito Vilanova returned to the dugout. The home side welcomed the return of coach Tito Vilanova back to the dugout and his presence inspired a first half performance to be admired. Pedro Rodriguez was in superb form, as was Lionel Messi but it would be midfielder Xavi Hernandez who broke the deadlock. Andres Iniesta clipped the ball in following a through ball from Messi and Xavi was on hand to poke the ball past Espanyol keeper *** Casilla. Five minutes later and Barca got a second, this time Cesc Fabregas crossed low for Messi, whose shot hit the knee of Pedro, who celebrated his first goal in a very long time. On the half hour mark the Spanish winger would be celebrating again when Sergio Busquets played a defence splitting pass for Pedro to chip the ball over the helpless Casilla. Minutes later and it would be four as Fabregas was fouled by Casilla and ...
Real Valladolid 1-3 Barcelona: Barcelona win one for Vilanova to finish 2012 on top Barcelona cap a magnificent and record-breaking year with a decisive 0-2 win over Real Valladolid, in a win dedicated to manager, Tito Vilanova, despite a late-game scare by Valladolid. By Martin Devlin In their first game since the news that manager Tito Villanova would be treated for a relapse of his cancer, Barcelona travelled to Valladolid to take on a side who had given Madrid a run for their money only two weeks earlier. Jordi Roura took charge of the Catalans in Villanova’s absense. As expected, the visitors dominated the opening half with superior possession but only went into the dressing room a goal to the good. Messi was first to waste a chance as he headed straight at Valladolid keeper Dani who gathered with ease. The opener continued to elude the Catalans and Alexis was unable to turn the ball in as it was played across the edge of the six yard box for him. After home defender Hugo Sereno was shown a yellow ...

Barcelona ensured they remain top of La Liga after a thumping 4-0 victory over Levante on Sunday. The Catalan giants went into the match in second place on the table following Atletico Madrid's win over Sevilla earlier in the day and knew victory at the Estadio Ciudad de Valencia would not only send them back to the top of the table but also open up an 11-point gap over bitter rivals Real Madrid after their shock loss to Real Betis on Saturday. After a scoreless first half, Tito Vilanova's men turned on the style in the second, with Lionel Messi scoring twice in four minutes just after the break to put his side two goals to the good. From there the result was never in doubt with Andres Iniesta firing home from the edge of the area in the 57th minute before Cesc Fabregas completed the rout six minutes later. Meanwhile, Atletico ensured they kept pace with Barcelona after they demolished a ten-man Sevilla side at the Estadio Vicente Calderon. Colombian striker Radamel Falcao rattled home his 10th goal of th ...
LEV 0 Barcelona 4 REPORT Andres Iniesta took centre stage with a virtuoso display as Barcelona continued their unbeaten start to the Primera Division season with a classy victory at Levante. Iniesta provided assists for Lionel Messi's quickfire double - his 81st and 82nd goals this calendar year - before lashing home a goal of his own and playing in Cesc Fabregas for a fourth as Barcelona ran riot in a devastating 18-minute spell at the start of the second half. Jose Barkero had the chance to pull a goal back for the hosts late on but saw his tame penalty saved by Victor Valdes as Barca comfortably maintained their three-point lead at the top of La Liga with their 11th win in 12 matches. Tito Vilanova's visitors had most of the possession in a cagey first period but surprisingly lacked a cutting edge in the final third. Indeed it was the hosts who were the first to threaten, Barkero cutting in from the right and sending in a swerving effort that Valdes had to guide over the bar. A minute later Barcelona s ...
The Brazilian has long been linked with a move to Camp Nou, but Peixe recently moved to quash speculation that a deal was already in place with the Catalan giants. But the 20-year-old has once again fuelled speculation that Tito Vilanova's side would be his preferred choice if and when he decides to leave South American football. "To play alongside Messi would be a dream. Even just training with him would make me very happy," he is reported as saying by Marca. The coveted youngster believes that while Cristiano Ronaldo and Andres Iniesta are great players, no one is more deserving of the Ballon d'Or than the Argentine. "For me, there are three players who are better than the rest: Iniesta, Ronaldo and Messi," he added. "But, the best is Messi. There is nobody who can do the things he does." And Neymar was also quick to acknowledge recent declarations from Messi, who branded his felllow Ballon d'Or nominee an "excellent footballer". "Can you imagine the best in your profession giving you praise? It made me ...
Barcelona captain Carles Puyol makes his return from injury this evening as the Catalan side face Real Zaragoza at Camp Nou in the Spanish Primera Division. The Spain international has been out of action since suffering a dislocated shoulder against Benfica in the Champions League, but returns to the starting XI tonight and will partner Gerard Pique in central defence. There is another slightly surprising selection by Barca coach Tito Vilanova as Martin Montoya starts at right-back in favour of Dani Alves, with the Brazilian having to settle for a place on the bench. The integral midfield trio of the hosts features Xavi, Alex Song and Andres Iniesta. David Villa is rewarded for his current form by earning a start this evening. The former Valencia man has been in excellent form in the last few games and netted for Spain against Panama during the week. He will start on the left-hand side with Pedro and Lionel Messi making up the attacking frontline. Zaragoza start the match without Portuguese striker Helder ...
TEAM NEWS: Villa and Tello partner Messi upfront as Barcelona head to Mallorca The Spain international and Masia graduate start in attack for the Blaugrana, as the club look to put their disappointing midweek Champions League defeat to Celtic behind them By Charlie Scott Nov 11, 2012 4:10:00 PM Tito Vilanova makes five changes to the side that lost during the week for Barcelona's trip to Mallorca, with David Villa and Cristian Tello chosen to play with Lionel Messi in a front three for the Catalan giants. Villa and Tello replace Pedro and Alexis Sanchez, while Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets also return to Barcelona's starting XI as Marc Bartra and Alex Song are dropped to the bench. Pique makes his first start in eight weeks after being injured during the club's Champions League match against Spartak Moscow in September. Cesc Fabregas is included in a midfield three alongside Xavi and Busquets, as Andres Iniesta is named as a substitute for tonight's game. Joaquin Caparros makes one change from his side ...
Latest Scores Xavi: We must move on from Celtic defeat The 32-year-old called on his side to forget their defeat in Scotland and focus solely on their next Champions League game in Russia By Paul Gorst Nov 8, 2012 2:10:00 PM Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez - FC Barcelona says Barcelona must move on from the 2-1 defeat at Celtic and concentrate on Spartak Moscow . Latest Scores Extra Time: Messi, Iniesta & Xavi pose with Celtic shirt The Ballon d'Or nominees were more than happy to hold the famous hooped jersey, but not as happy as they'll be at the prospect of running riot against a depleted Bhoys side By Ewan Roberts Nov 7, 2012 7:00:00 PM It’s an image Celtic fans could barely even dream about: Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta holding aloft the hooped jersey. Oh, and Xavi there too! Has Henrik Larsson been extolling the virtues of Glasgow to his former team-mates? Does Iniesta long to face clubs as steeped in history as Ross County? Is the Ballon d'Or winner hooked on deep-fried Mars bars? Sadly not Bhoys fans, unfortunately Messi & co. will not be strutting their stuff in green and white on the hallowed turf of Celtic Park. Nor is this a case of preemptive, Andre Santos-style shirt swapping. The trio actually snuck past Tito Vilanova and out of training before stumbling upon Celtic's 125th anniversary celebrations. They posed for a cheeky snap before hitting t ...
Mourinho: Ref made a big mistake Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho was again critical of the referee's performance during Sunday's 2-2 draw at Barcelona, but his claims were swiftly dismissed by Tito Vilanova. Two goals apiece from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo meant a share of the spoils at the Camp Nou, with Barcelona retaining their eight-point lead in the Primera Division standings. Much of the attention post-match was on two controversial moments early in the second half when, with the score at 1-1, referee Carlos Delgado Ferreiro first waved away a Madrid penalty appeal after Mesut Ozil tumbled over Javier Mascherano's challenge inside the area and then dismissed Barca calls for a spot kick when Pepe halted Andres Iniesta's run on the edge of the box. Mourinho said it went against his club's traditions to complain about referees but then went on to do just that. "Madrid is a gentlemanly club and penalties not signalled cannot be talked about," Mourinho said. "This is the philosophy of the club and ...
Vilanova: Messi has no limits Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova chose to focus on the brilliance of Lionel Messi after an entertaining 2-2 draw with Real Madrid in La Liga. Cristiano Ronaldo started and finished the scoring at the Nou Camp, with Messi also at the double - his second strike a stunning free-kick - to ensure honours ended even. "We do not know his limits," Vilanova said of the Argentina forward. "You should see how he trains every day - that urge he has to keep getting better. "I think we will never see another player like this. He is the best in the world by far." Vilanova added that Ronaldo would be "more recognised" if his career had not coincided with Messi's. As always between the arch rivals, tensions frequently looked in danger of boiling over. Visiting defender Pepe accused Andres Iniesta of "doing theatre" in a bid to win a second-half penalty and Madrid coach Jose Mourinho - who infamously poked a finger into the eye of Vilanova on the touchline last season when he was Pep Guardiola's ...
Statistically superior to Pep's start, but Tito's Barcelona are yet to sparkle By Charlie Scott Much was made of Barcelona's appointment of Tito Vilanova as coach following Pep Guardiola's sabbatical from the game at the end of last season, with many within football, particularly in Spain, unsure of the 44-year-old's suitability and capability of taking the reins at the world's biggest club and sustaining the fantastic form they enjoyed under the previous boss. On his very first day in the job whilst being unveiled to the media, Vilanova was bombarded with questions surrounding how he would compare to the man he had replaced, the man who in his four years in charge of the senior team won 13 trophies and had such a huge role in shaping the attacking style that the team so effortlessly exhibits to this day. "I'm just here to do my job. I'm not worried about the comparisons with Pep. I lose them all anyway," said Vilanova to the ravenous press. The Barca players echoed this sentiment, with Andres Iniesta one ...
Sevilla v Barcelona Tito Vilanova's Barcelona will be aiming to equal their best ever start to a domestic campaign when they travel to Sevilla on Saturday night. The table-topping Blaugrana have picked up maximum points from their opening five league fixtures, but expect a stern test from the hosts who are unbeaten in La Liga. Sevilla coach Michel Gonzalez is boosted by the returns of Diego Perotti and Jose Antonio Reyes, who made a return to action in a charity match on Tuesday after recovering from calf and shoulder injuries respectively. However, the duo are unlikely to start and could well be handed a place on the substitutes bench. Barcelona will have to make do without the services of defensive duo Gerard Pique (ankle) and Carles Puyol (knee) for this crunch clash. However, Vilanova will be able to call on the services of midfielder Andres Iniesta, who returned to training recently after shrugging off a hamstring problem. Due to the continued absence of Pique and Puyol, the Barca coach is expected t ...

Their woes continued in the second half as Osasuna kept them on the back foot, while coach Tito Vilanova was sent to the stands in the 73rd minute for protesting to the linesman. However, a controversial equaliser from Lionel Messi brought them back into the match moments later and Osasuna captain Patxi Punal was sent off for protesting the goal. The Argentine would pop up once again four minutes later to poke home the winner and give the Catalans a win that they scarcely deserved, after a spirited and purposeful performance from the home side. Vilanova rested Xavi from the start, with David Villa also taking his place on the bench as Cristian Tello and Alexis Sanchez started up front alongside Lionel Messi. With sunlight beating down over Estadio El Sadar, Barcelona were slow getting out of the blocks, and had Victor Valdes to thank for denying Alvaro Cejudo from close range inside the opening two minutes. Andres Iniesta would create danger at the other end, teeing up Tello, who saw his effort touched by ...
Alex Song signs Barcelona deal Barcelona - Cameroon midfielder Alex Song signed a five-year contract with Barcelona on Monday, bringing an end to his time with English Premier League club Arsenal. Song posed for the traditional photo in front of the club's insignia before passing a medical examination and meeting with Barcelona President Sandro Rosell. The Spanish club paid Arsenal €19m for Song. Arsenal sold striker Robin van Persie to Manchester United earlier this week for £24m. Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova said he was impressed with Song's versatility. "(Song) can provide us with a lot of things. He's very good, he recovers the ball well and then can do good things with it," said Vilanova, who sees Song sharing time with Sergio Busquets as a defensive midfielder alongside the more attack-minded Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez. "Busquets can't play every game of the season so Song will be a great addition," he said. "And he can also play in the center of the defense. With him we'll have more alte ...
Camp Nou, Barcelona MATCH IN A SENTENCE: Barcelona scored three times in the opening quarter-hour of their season and cruised to a 5-1 victory over a Real Sociedad team that was simply brushed aside. KEY MOMENT: In the context of the match David Villa’s goal—his side’s fifth and scored with just six minutes to play—was the least important of the quintet, but in the context of the season it was a monumental tally. Villa, having missed much of last season with a serious leg break, made his competitive return to the Barcelona lineup when he replaced Pedro in the 75th minute. Nine minutes later his name was on the scoresheet following a neat one-two with fellow substitute Andres Iniesta that culminated in a left-footed finish from close in. New manager Tito Vilanova will need all his offensive weapons firing if Barcelona are to regain the title from Real Madrid, and Villa’s return to goal-scoring form is only good news in that regard. FROM HERE: Barcelona will host Real Madrid in the first leg of th ...

Alex Song set to beat Robin van Persie out of the door at Arsenal Cameroon midfielder's departure from Emirates looks more certain than Dutch striker's BY Bill Mann LAST UPDATED AT 07:16 ON Thu 9 Aug 2012 JUST 48 hours after the announcement that Santi Cazorla has signed for Arsenal comes news that Alex Song is on his way out of the Emirates. According to Spanish rag Sport, the Cameroon midfielder "has reached an agreement" with Barcelona. Rumours first emerged last month linking the 24-year-old Song to the Spanish giants and now it's being suggested they've got their man. Initially Barca had been after Athletic Bilbao's Javi Martinez, but when they failed in their bid new boss Tito Vilanova cast his gaze upon Song. Sport reports that the Catalan club have agreed personal terms with Song but have yet to make a make a formal offer to the Gunners. But Sky Sports reports that Barcelona are confident they've sealed the deal, with midfielder Andres Iniesta quoted as saying: "If he comes here it's because he ha ...

Barcelona will consider offers for all but seven of current squad - including Cesc, Pedro Barcelona chiefs have made just SEVEN of their first team squad untouchable for the summer market. Sport says Barca are prepared to shake-up their roster to help fund major signings for next season. Victor Valdes, Carles Puyol, Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Leo Messi are those off limits for interested clubs. However, interestingly, Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez can be prised away for the right price, along with Dani Alves, Pedro Rodriguez, Ibrahim Afellay, Adriano Correia and Seydou Keita. Young Barca B graduates Martin Montoya, Oier, Jonathan Dos Santos, Marc Bartra and Marc Muniesa are also being made available as new coach Tito Vilanova doesn't want to work with a blown out squad.
