2013 in review: Scotland December 18, 2013 All in all, this has been one of Scotland’s better years in recent memory – if you exclude the percentage of wins, that is. Scott Johnson has come in and tightened everything up and player performances have been, mainly, quite good. It helps that Glasgow have been playing well in the RaboDirect PRO12, and now one of Scotland’s main aims should be to increase the amount of talented young players that are starting to come through. Biggest success Coming third in the Six Nations and winning two out of the five games – Scotland’s best placed finish since 2006. It wasn’t the prettiest of campaigns but wins against Italy and Ireland and clinical finishing from the back three of Stuart Hogg, Sean Maitland and Tim Visser kept Scotland ahead of Italy on points difference. Scott Johnson’s term as interim head coach can be deemed somewhat of a success considering the injuries suffered over the year and the opposition played, and the capture of a world-class co ...

EDINBURGH: Scotland's wily Australian coach Scott Johnson has dismissed the Wallabies backline woes by labelling Christian Leali'ifano a better No.12 than Matt Giteau. Leali'ifano has been languishing on the bench for Australia's end-of-season European tour, but will be thrust into the weekend's Test against the Scots due to the loss of their entire three-quarter line. In-form inside centre Matt Toomua was the latest Wallabies back to be ruled out of the Murrayfield clash when he was sent home late on Wednesday with a hamstring strain. Midfield partner Tevita Kuridrani is also out due to a five-week ban for his dangerous tip tackle in the 32-15 win over Ireland, while incumbent wingers Nick Cummins and Adam Ashley-Cooper have been stood down for late night drinking in Dublin last week. To all intents and purposes, the Wallabies' backline is in disarray. But not according to Johnson, who is missing three of his best backs - Stuart Hogg, Tim Visser and Matt Scott due to injury - and has delayed naming his b ...

Full Time at Murrayfield: Edinburgh 9-22 Scarlets Not a good night for the pro-teams. At least Glasgow just about hang on to top spot, but with Ulster amd Leinster both registering bonus-point wins the gap is closing fast. A bp win for Ospreys tomorrow at Connacht could see the Warriors knocked off the top spot despite winning 4 from 4. Edinburgh still don't like like finding any kind of form, which is not helped by the continued absence of key players such as Tim Visser, Matt Scott, Ross Rennie and Greig Laidlaw. Glasgow on the other hand appear to have lost last season's cutting edge in attack while continuing to struggle to put the smaller teams away despite grinding out the bigger results. Edinburgh really have to buck up their ideas ahead of a very winnable match away at off colour Cardiff next week. Meanwhile Glasgow will have to ensure they ate FAR more controlled and clinical if they are to maintain their 100% record away at banana skin Scarlets next week.
Scott Johnson has made three changes to the Scotland team to face Italy in Pretoria on Saturday. Glasgow Warriors Rugby captain Al Kellock comes in at lock, Edinburgh Rugby (official)'s David Denton starts at 6 and Tom Heathcote will start at fly half. Edinburgh duo Grant Gilchrist and Tim Visser are amongst the replacements alongside Warriors back row Rob Harley.
Are the Lions only allowed to call up English players? Christian Wade?! Whats wrong with Tim Visser?
The lions have called up Christian Wade a 7s player who hasn't yet scored an international try instead of Tim Visser this is a disgrace
Scotland included 3 new caps in the team to face South Africa on 15th June in a Four Nation Tournament. The debutants for the game at Mbomela Stadium in new Test venue Nelspruit are full back Peter Murchie, right wing Tommy Seymour and lock Tim Swinson. Coach Scott Johnson has made 7 changes to the side beaten 27-17 bySamoa last weekend in a bruising 1st round clash. Fly half Ruaridh Jackson, hooker Scott Lawson, lock Jim Hamilton and flank Ryan Wilson are the others elevated to the starting line up. Tour ending injuries ruled out captain and ;loose forward Kelly Brown and hooker Pat MacArthur and concussed fly half Tom Heathcote is rested. Lock Alastair Kellock drops to the bench while the axe fell on full back Greig Tonks, left wing Tim Visser and lock Grant Gilchrist. Australian Johnson said the casualty list after the Samoa loss - which ran into double figures - was the longest he had known in his coaching career. South Africa : W Le Roux; B Habana, JJ Engelbrecht, J De Villiers (capt), B Basson; M S ...
Scotland have made a late change to the team that plays Samoa in Durban on Saturday with Alasdair Dickinson replacing Ryan Grant at loose head prop. Grant was called up by the British and Irish Lions for the tour of Australia after injuries to props Cian Healy of Ireland and Gethin Jenkins of Wales. Team: Greig Tonks, Sean Lamont, Alex Dunbar, Matt Scott, Tim Visser, Tom Heathcote, Greig Laidlaw, Johnnie Beattie, Kelly Brown(capt), Alasdair Strokosch, Alastair Kellock, Grant Gilchrist, Euan Murray, Pat MacArthur, Alasdair Dickinson Replacements: Steven Lawrie, Moray Low, Geoff Cross, Jim Hamilton, Ryan Wilson, Henry Pyrgos, Peter Horne, Duncan Taylor
Amazingly, there is more than just the British & Irish Lions going on in rugby at the moment! Scotland have name a relatively inexperienced team for Saturday's opening summer tour match against Samoa in South Africa. Greig Tonks, Pat MacArthur and Alex Dunbar will all make their debuts, whilst Tom Heathcote and Grant Gilchrist will win just their second cap. The match is part of a quadrangular tournament, which also features the Springboks and Italy and will be live on Sky Sports 2 from 1.15pm this Saturday. Greig Tonks (Edinburgh), Sean Lamont (Glasgow), Alex Dunbar (Glasgow), Matt Scott (Edinburgh), Tim Visser (Edinburgh), Tom Heathcote (Bath), Greig Laidlaw (Edinburgh), Ryan Grant (Glasgow), Pat MacArthur (Glasgow), Euan Murray (Worcester), Grant Gilchrist (Edinburgh), Alastair Kellock (Glasgow), Alasdair Strokosch (Perpignan), Kelly Brown (Saracens) (Captain), Johnnie Beattie (Montpellier). Six Nations Scotland v Wales: Wales player ratings Posted on Mar 11, 2013 15. Leigh Halfpenny – 7 The pocket warrior took advantage of Scotland’s incessant offending to land a 23-point haul, which could have been bigger but for three uncharacteristic misses. Even more impressive was his aerial solidity under pressure from Stuart Hogg, as well as some lively carries and typically courageous tackling. 14. Alex Cuthbert – 6 Amid the turgid forward battle, Cuthbert was completely anonymous until the second half, when he came off his wing to good effect and steam-rolled Tim Visser from a burly kick-return. 13. Jonathan Davies – 6 Another to get lost in a pretty abject game, Davies did provide a kicking option while ensuring the Scotland midfield made little headway. Manu Tuilagi will not be as easy to contain, though. 12. Jamie Roberts – 5½ He led defensive line-speed well and harried to good effect, stifling the hosts’ attack more than their own lack of ambition managed. Even if a grim occasion d ...

What can totally impress you? — Leigh Halfpenny and Tim Visser on a rugby pitch at the same time. Yes...
Six Nations 2013 Team of the Week: Round 2 Posted on Feb 12, 2013 15: Stuart Hogg (Scotland) We saw glimpses last year of this man’s potential – he is showing us now just how good he could be. The awareness to intercept a try-scoring pass was impressive in itself, but the dazzling 80 metre dash that followed? Breathtaking. 14: Tim Visser (Scotland) The flying Dutchman was anonymous last week, but was back to his best against Italy. A smartly taken try in the first half capped a performance that saw Visser come looking for the ball a lot more than he had previously. 13: Mathieu Bastareaud (France) Probably the only player to come out of France’s weekend with any credit (groundsmen included), Bastareaud completely justified his selction – which is more than can be said for the listless Mermoz inside him. He was a one man-wrecking ball in the midfield, getting France front-foot ball which they managed to squander time and again. 12: Matt Scott (Scotland) Strong, solid and direct, Scott did everything ...
Scotland vs Italy Six Nations 2013: Scotland Player Ratings Posted on Feb 11, 2013 15 – Stuart Hogg 9.5 Elite attacker, defender and a sure ascension to the Lions squad if he continues to play like this. Excellent all round performance from a player who is the benchmark for the rest of the Scottish team to reach. 14 – Sean Maitland 7.5 Another solid game from one of Scotland’s younger players. Set Scott up with a well positioned pass and couldn’t be faulted. As each game goes by the young winger is going to get better and better. 13 – Sean Lamont 7.5 A big-time player like Lamont needed to put in a strong performance, as many feel his star is on the wane. His positional play was often poor but he grabbed himself a good try, showing impressive awareness and pace. 12 – Matt Scott 8 One of Scotland’s standout defenders, letting nothing past him. Bagged a try while almost collecting a couple more. Solid, aggressive and dependable. 11 – Tim Visser 8 Worked tirelessly always looking for the ...
Hooker Ross Ford has warned the rest of the Scotland pack SkyBet to expect another test of their physicality and commitment when they take on Italy this weekend. Ford comes into the starting XV, replacing the injured Dougie Hall, for the Murrayfield showdown against an Azzurri side sure to be on a high after their remarkable victory over France. "We won't get it any easier this weekend," warned the 28-year-old. "Italy have a brilliant pack so we need to make sure we front up in the areas England exposed against us. "We've been working in training this week, trying to make sure that doesn't happen again. "We need to put in a performance in those areas that allows us to play the way we want to play, on the front foot." The Scots might have struggled at the breakdown against England but it wasn't all doom and gloom, full-back Stuart Hogg had a fantastic game as did wingers Tim Visser and Sean Maitland on debut.
Tim Visser another Newcastle team mate. Great to see him on form. Deserves the praise. Always shone as a young player and has worked v hard.

So who was the Home nations stars of the Southern Hemisphere tours? Tim Visser? Chris Robshaw? Cian Healy? Dan Lydiate?
Well done to all the home nations and Ireland as they battled in the southern hemisphere today! Ireland were robbed 22-19 as Dan Carter snatched a drop goal in the last minute of the match to let the All Blacks off the hook and to take the win. Wales were equally unlucky to lose to Australia in extra time, with the Ozzies being given a life line by the ref to slot home a penalty kick in the last kick of the game. Final score 25-23. England put in a couragous second half to halt the Spring Boks early dominance (3x tries in the first quarter) but it wasn't enough to give England the win... they have one more chance to beat the South Africans (this tour - next Saturday) and end a 12 year drought for wins in SA. Scotland debutant Tim Visser dotted down twice to help the Scots to their second tour win, this time over Fiji - 37-25. Next up for Scotland will be Samoa.
I dont care that he is Dutch, Tim Visser is a try-scoring machine for Edinburgh and has done it for Scotland on his debut!
