FOIA: "Dating back to the Three Mile Island nuclear crisis in 1979, many nuclear watchdogs and critics have said that the NRC acts first to protect the industry, and its own reputation. One critic said these emails solidify that perception. "The NRC knew a lot more about what was going on than it wanted to tell the American people," said Edwin Lyman, senior scientist at the nuclear watchdog group Union of Concerned Scientists and co-author of the new book "Fukushima: The Story of a Nuclear Disaster," which relied on some of the same emails. "They immediately put out information that implied that U.S. reactors were in a better position to withstand Fukushima type events than Fukushima reactors were, but it was clear that the what the NRC knew internally was not nearly as positive."
1. Sleepiness Causes Accidents Sleep deprivation was a factor in some of the biggest disasters in recent history: the 1979 nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, the massive Exxon Valdez oil spill, the 1986 nuclear meltdown at Chernobyl, and others. But sleep loss is also a big public safety hazard every day on the road. Drowsiness can slow reaction time as much as driving drunk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that fatigue is a cause in 100,000 auto crashes and 1,550 crash-related deaths a year in the U.S. The problem is greatest among people under 25 years old. Studies show that sleep loss and poor-quality sleep also lead to accidents and injuries on the job. In one study, workers who complained about excessive daytime sleepiness had significantly more work accidents, particularly repeated work accidents. They also had more sick days per accident.

As a youngster the siblings and I often pulled out a black and white home movie starring cave-people, annoyed dinosaurs and a volcanic eruption.  All of us waited for the great scene:  a fleeing cave babe rundown by lava.  The film jerked wildly but we tolerated sorry tech to see honey die—over and over.  We want to see people die, cities burn and multitudes scream.  We want chaos for entertainment mostly, but also because it bolsters the need for justice in a seemingly unjust universe.  The disaster genre rose out of seventies chaos.  This was the decade of Watergate, Saigon’s fall, Jimmy Carter, Iranian hostage foul-up and Three Mile Island.  Somebody at the top fumbled and everybody below suffered.  The Towering Inferno burned because of cost-cutting lapses by big people.  Little people died for it.  In the disaster genre little people survive as big, morally unjust folk get it.  A revenge component underlies the genre.  The genre therefore instills in us a sense of order in its dispen ...
The answer to today's trivia song is... THE CLASH! "London Calling" is a song by the British punk rock band The Clash. It was released as a single from the band's 1979 double album London Calling. This apocalyptic, politically charged rant features the band's famous combination of reggae basslines and punk electric guitar and vocals. The song was written by Joe Strummer and *** Jones. The title alludes to the BBC World Service's station identification: "This is London Calling ...", which was used during World War II, often in broadcasts to occupied countries. The lyrics reflect the concern felt by Strummer about world events with the reference to "a nuclear error" to the incident at Three Mile Island, which occurred earlier in 1979. Joe Strummer has said: "We felt that we were struggling about to slip down a slope or something, grasping with our fingernails. And there was no one there to help us."
The Government announced today that it will allow the building of a new nuclear power station. Great idea, unless of course you know what the words Three Mile Island, Windscale, Fuchashima and Chernobyl mean. Regardless of the health and safety issues what puzzles me is this. The Government announces that part of the deal, in order to finance the construction, the power companies have too, have too not can, but have too charge twice the going rate for electricity. And then David Cameron has the brass balls to say that this will provide cheaper energy for everyone. I don't understand. yes I know that I didn't go to Eton but I'm sure that if you charge twice the price, it is in fact more expensive. Can anyone explain to me how that works. Surly £92 per mega unit, the price quoted this morning is greater than the average price of £43 that most companies are charging? Signed someone who lacks a degree in double book keeping gobble-dee *** but has a PhD in common sense.
10 of the Strangest Hobbies Boredom or too much creativity? Meet some of the weirdest activities and strange hobbies people engage in when they have plenty of free time. Here are 10 of the strangest hobbies. Playing dead Chuck Lamb, 47 aka The Dead Body Guy probably has the world’s strangest hobby: he likes to play dead. As if that’s not enough, he takes it one step further: he takes photos and videos of himself playing dead and posts them on his website, starting in 2005. These bizarre antics have attracted 32 million hits to his website by its 1st anniversary, and several newsprint, TV and radio appearances. But what is his motivation? In his website, he says that he’d always dreamed of being in a movie or on TV. Well, that seems to be a pretty bizarre hobby for a married man with 6 kids. He himself admitted that he has no acting experience and he’s not good looking. In other words, he’d never make it as an actor. TMI Warning Siren Information Outdoor sirens are used to warn the public of natural and man-made disasters that pose a risk to their safety. The outdoor sirens in Newberry Township and Lewisberry Borough are also used to alert the public of a potentially hazardous situation at the Three Mile Island facility. The entire outdoor siren system is tested annually. Individual sirens may be tested on a monthly basis but will only sound briefly. The community is usually warned before sirens are tested. If you hear the siren, you should tune to one of the following Emergency Alert System Stations (EAS) for instructions. TV stations WPMT43, WGAL8 or WGCB49, FM Radio stations 96.1, 92.7, 105.7, 103.3, 98.5, 99.7, 107.7 or AM Radio stations 1280, 1250, 910, 1350, 1320. Follow the instructions provided and continue to monitor the EAS for updates. *INFO ONLY - NO ACTIVE ALERTS*
We got "evacuated" at work the other day. I outran a pretty big feller in the footrace that ensued. He was truly scared for his life, as was I. We got a lecture afterwards about low spots, wind socks and organized plans. No one could hear the alarms over the sound of construction. I suspect that perhaps Three Mile Island began this way. They did let us lollygag about, regain our wits, tell horrible burn and dying stories for an hour or so but made *** sure we all marched the half a mile or so back into the plant before they had to pay us OT thru lunch. That's what I thought. Three Mile Island happened in 78 or 79.
I wonder if this story was before or after Three Mile Island.
Hey look. Is that Three Mile Island from the backyard?
If Japan or the Soviet Union with their advance technology and huge engineering base ( and the US with Three Mile Island), could not maintain the safety of their reactors, how are North Korea, Pakistan, England, France, Armenia, India, Israel, and Canada given the likelihood of some large natural catastrophe or human error (Chernobyl) eventually striking one of the many proliferating nuclear reactors? Is Japan after selling Turkey nuclear reactors going to honor the commitment and be able to come to the rescue if the earthquake prone Turkey has a nuclear disaster like Japan? Japan and Russia (Ukraine) cannot even contain their own nuclear disasters or manage their wastes without expanding debt and waste of human resources. When is this scam of nuclear energy going to finally become evident to the world?
yes I am using this pendrive to keep my presentation of the three mile island nuclear plant for physics
Bokonon: Terrorism? Terrorism is such a small thing, with such small effects. Chernobyl? Three Mile Island? Fukushima? Now those were catastrophes. Those were enough to convince this deluded planet that it should throw away infinite free energy, that it should throw away the economy of the future, that it should destroy the planet itself. But politics doesn't reward courage, the courage to recognize accidents, to respond according to their scale and continue reaching towards a brighter future. It rewards cowardice, wrapped in bright colors and labeled 'courage'. So it goes.
WELL, WELL lookey at this little nugget. Quietly read into the Federal Register of TAX DAY, no less, to guarentee NO ATTENTION WHATEVER BY THE MEDIA... Top 5 Mistakes Media Professionals Make when Covering Nuclear Stories…and the Inside Scoop on How to Avoid Them! As invisible as radiation, the nuclear story surrounds us all: • Fukushima’s ongoing, massive radiation releases into the Pacific Ocean… with 14,000 Hiroshima bombs-worth of radioactive materials stored precariously at the demolished facility’s site. • Compromises to the food chain from Fukushima’s radiological impact on Pacific seafood and American agriculture… not that the FDA or EPA is monitoring it. • Agi ...

Cabinet Committee on Security Note, Attorney- General’s opinion in contempt of Parliament US, Russian nuclear suppliers attempt to escape liability under Fukushima shadow Scrap IAEA-WHO Agreement and Atomic Energy Act of 1962 in public interest New Delhi: ToxicsWatch Alliance (TWA) disapproves of the “Sensational Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) note” which “exposes the government's plans to dodge nuke viability issues” ahead of Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh’s meeting with USA’s President Barack Obama on September 27, 2013. It may recollected that Parliament’s intent of Liability for Nuclear Damage Act, 2010 was undermined through the notification of Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Rules, 2011 ahead of Prime Minister's scheduled meeting with US President on November 18, 2011 at Bali, Indonesia. The relevant Rules and the Act are attached. Under the influence of nuclear companies, Obama has compelled Dr Singh government to dilute key provisions of the India’s nuclear liability l ...

Former US regulator says cleaning up Fukushima is bigger challenge than Three Mile Island.
"Fukushima Radioactive Levels Surge 90-Fold in Three Days Fallout worsens again as industry pushes for more nuclear plants" This may end up being worse than Three Mile Island or Chernobyl, mostly because of incompetence and attempting to sweep the whole thing under the rug (or dome, as the case may be)
"A not so old prediction coming to pass" Obama was the worst president in U.S. history. Is it true? There are only two other true contenders for the title of “worst president in U.S. history”: Jimmy Carter and James Buchanan. Warren G. Harding’s tenure was corrupt but not disastrous, and Andrew Johnson’s presidency failed because of his Southern roots and wrongful adherence to extreme states rights concepts in the aftermath of the Civil War, not because his administration effectuated any grave damage to the nation. Only Buchanan matches the record of incompetence, failure and wrongheadedness pursued by Obama. Take Jimmy Carter, for example. He was responsible for the fall of the Shah in Iran and the subsequent rise of the Ayatollahs. He emboldened the Soviets to invade Afghanistan. He oversaw the Three Mile Island incident and presided over a high unemployment rate of 7.1 percent and staggering inflation and interest rates, both of which topped 18 percent by early 1980. His presidency saw gas rati ...
If you care about the environment, you should welcome natural gas fracking | John Hanger There is no perfect energy source that has no environmental impact and is low-cost. Natural gas is far better than coal or oil Shale gas is reshaping America's economy, environment and politics in still surprising ways. It was an unpredicted phenomenon, but shale gas, now more than a decade old, accounts for 40% of the natural gas in the US. The success of shale production, that has reached large areas of America where no gas development previously existed, birthed the largest environmental movement since the anti-nuclear power protests of the Three Mile Island era. The "fracking wars" have come to America and the world, with the recently fired French energy and environment minister saying shale gas supporters wanted her scalp. The massive supply of shale gas crashed the price of gas from $13 for a thousand cubic feet in July 2008 to below $4, delivering heating and electricity savings of $1,000 per year to many US co ...
And so, when the Kochs, and Monsantos, and Haliburtons, and Exxon, and BP, and all these greedy *** totally pollute all our water, air, ground, oceans, and kill all our insects, and plants, what are they going to spend their money on? On buying another planet? On oxygen tanks? Protective suits? Plastic plants? Cheetos? Styrofoam? Where will they go for vacation? To the Ganges River? The Dead sea? The Moon? Siberia? Haiti? Three Mile Island? Chernobyl? The joke will be on them.
Generation X [Born 1965–1980] As Baby Boomers took their time to grow up in a world that beckoned them, built malls for them and seduced them into adulthood kicking and screaming, Generation X was pushed toward adulthood at an age earlier than any other recent generation. Whereas Baby Boomers came to understand that the future was theirs for the taking, Generation X felt the future had been given to their parents and older siblings and found the future disappointing and somewhat unappealing. While Baby Boomers whined about the long lines for gas in the mid-1970s, Gen Xers watched from the back seat wondering what the future held. Just like the malls, shopping centers and office buildings they would come to work in and the videos they would rent, everything appeared secondhand and pre-viewed. Born between 1965 and 1980, Gen Xers grew up in an era of emerging technology and political and institutional incompetence. Watergate, Three Mile Island, Bhopal, the Iranian hostage crisis, Iran-Contra ...
