Spend less on arms, more on schools, says Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi By Nita Bhalla NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Countries around the world should cut their defence budgets and invest in education if child labour is to be eradicated, said Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi. The 60-year-old was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize this month with Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan for their struggle against the oppression of children. "The world has been able to produce more guns and weapons and bullets, than the books and toys which are needed for children," Satyarthi told a news conference late on Monday. "Do we need what people call 'defence', but what I see as an offence? We should spend more money, even out of our defence budgets, and we must give children a good education globally." Some 30 million people - including children - are enslaved worldwide, trafficked into brothels, forced into manual labour, victims of debt bondage or even born into servitude, a global index on modern slavery showed in ...

Burundi, Eritrea, East Timor top global hunger index BY KIERAN GUILBERT Mon Oct 13, 2014 7:02am EDT ANALYSIS & OPINION LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Sixteen countries have alarming levels of hunger, with Burundi the worst affected, according to an annual index released on Monday which also reveals that 2 billion people worldwide suffer from "hidden hunger". Hidden hunger, which is a lack of vitamins and minerals, weakens the immune system, stunts physical and intellectual growth, and can lead to death. Burundi, which tops the Global Hunger Index for the third year in a row, is followed by Eritrea, East Timor and Comoros. Some 805 million people around the world are still chronically undernourished, according to the report, despite progress in combating hunger – three years ago, the index recorded 26 countries with "alarming" or "extremely alarming" hunger levels. South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa face the highest levels of hunger. Countries showing the largest improvement since 1990 include Ango ...

W Africa Ebola crisis hits tourism, compounds hunger in Gambia Pestilence, cyclical droughts and floods, and the West Africa Ebola crisis have pushed hunger to record levels in Gambia, where 200 000 people need urgent food assistance, the United Nations says. Tourism is a significant source of income for the country, and even though Gambia has not seen cases of Ebola, the outbreak in the region has caused visitor numbers to plummet by 60% compared to last year, said Ade Mamonyane Lekoetje, the UN representative for Gambia. “In 2011-12 we had the floods and droughts, then in 2013 we had the birds eating all the crops, and now we have Ebola threatening the tourist industry, a lifeline to farmers who need to top up their household income,” Lekoetje told the Thomson Reuters Foundation at a donor gathering in Dakar. "The government is keen to emphasise Gambia is Ebola-free," she added, noting that the true impact of the outbreak will not be known until after the tourist high season from October to April. S ...

Local farmers in Rufiji complain that district officials have ordered them to vacate their land to pave the way for investors, often without receiving fair compensation. "I had three acres of land where I could grow fruit (and) I also had access to more land where I could grow food crops, but ever since these companies came, I have not been able to access it," Riziki Mtongoni from Nyamwengwe village told Thomson Reuters Foundation. Villagers say most people who have moved to make way for investors have been offered only small amounts of poor-quality land in return. Jumanne Kikumbi from Nyamisati village accused district leaders of double standards. "We are put in a vulnerable position - these investors have been making key land-use decisions without consulting us," he said. According to the Village Land Act 1999, village councils have the power to decide how to use their land. Once a piece of land has been identified for investment, the village authorities must gain permission from the people before it ca ...

POLL - Egypt is Worst Arab State for Women, Comoros Best. LONDON, Nov 12, 2013 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Sexual harassment, high rates of female genital cutting and a surge in violence and Islamist feeling after the Arab Spring uprisings have made Egypt the worst country in the Arab world to be a woman, a poll of gender experts showed on Tuesday. Discriminatory laws and a spike in trafficking also contributed to Egypt’s place at the bottom of a ranking of 22 Arab states, the Thomson Reuters Foundation survey found. Despite hopes that women would be one of the prime beneficiaries of the Arab Spring, they have instead been some of the biggest losers, as the revolts have brought conflict, instability, displacement and a rise in Islamist groups in many parts of the region, experts said. "We removed the Mubarak from our presidential palace but we still have to remove the Mubarak who lives in our minds and in our bedrooms," Egyptian columnist Mona Eltahawy said, referring to Egypt's toppled dictator, *** ...

"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us" - Isaiah 33:22 When the Lord gave me this prophecies I could hardly wait. The fire of the Holy Ghost burned in me but he refused to grant me open doors until the ending of January. He then told me to preach on His tri-fold blessing bestowed upon his bride with the prophetic stories in Judges 19-21; The book of Hosea, and from the story of the good Samaritan Chapter Luke 10 verse 38 onwards. The Spirit of the Lord also showed to me that, this was the estate of the nations and of the church. But it was not until I had received a vision on the 29th of January, that I understood what was happening. I recognized that, the days of groaning and mourning of the bride of Christ and the revelations of the multiple rape given from Judges chapter 19-21, was indeed the revelation of the spirit on what was really happening in the realms of the Spirit. A research I did showed that, the same date that the Spirit of the Lord showe ...

I-N-T-E-RE-S-T-I-N-G N E W S! :) Faso ~~~President Unlikely to Extend Term - Analysts~~~ Dakar — Nearly a week after Burkina Faso's opposition staged the largest demonstrations in decades to protest the ruling party's attempt to abolish constitutional term limits, analysts are saying President Blaise Compaoré is likely to face an uphill battle if he wishes to stay in office beyond next year. Compaoré, who first came to power in a 1987 coup and then served two seven-year terms, most recently won a 2010 election to serve his final elected five-year term under a constitution that dates to 2000. As Compaoré approaches the final year of his term, his Congress for Democracy and Progress party is now accused of attempting to revise Article 37 of the constitution, which limits presidents to serving two five-year terms. According to Meluleki Mthembu, a researcher at the African Democratic Institute, changing the constitution will prove more challenging than it has been in the past. "It will be very difficult ...
