Thomas Mueller scored a hat-trick as Bayern Munich won 4-0 at Eintracht Frankfurt to increase their overnight lead in the Bundesliga to seven points on Saturday.
PSG sink Barca; Chelsea, Bayern win 30 September 2014, 23:10 Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Paris St- Germain went top of their Champions Leagues groups on Wednesday with valuable victories in the second round of matches. Bayern won 1-0 win at CSKA Moscow, Chelsea prevailed by the same score at Sporting Lisbon and PSG edged Barcelona 3-2 in the most eventful match of the night. Bayern's goal in Moscow came in the 22nd minute when Thomas Mueller calmly converted a penalty after CSKA's Mario Fernandes had recklessly pulled down Mario Goetze in the area. The closest that CSKA came to equalising was when Roman Eremenko hit the Bayern post with a left-foot drive, five minutes before half- time. The Bundesliga champions managed to play out the second half without too many scares for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. "This was an important win for us, and I think we just about deserved it," said World Cup-winning keeper Neuer. "To be honest, we should really have killed the game off with a second goal." GOAL Bayern: Thomas Mueller converts the penalty kick from the foul on Mario Goetze to give Bayern the 1-0 lead over CSKA …
Mario Goetze netted a brace as Bayern Munich moved top of the German Bundesliga with a 4-0 win victory over Paderborn as Mainz 05 missed their chance to take top spot after only drawing with Eintracht Frankfurt. Goetze put Bayern in front in the eighth minute, calmly slotting the ball past Paderborn goalkeeper Jose Reina from just inside the area after being set up by Thomas Mueller. Robert Lewandowski made it 2-0 five minutes later with a longe-range effort and almost extended Bayern's lead further shortly afterwards but for a timely block. Mueller was again the provider for Goetze's second goal of the game 12 minutes from time and the Germany winger got on the scoresheet himself with five minutes remaining to complete a comfortable win. The result sees Pep Guardiola's side move on to 11 points, two clear of Mainz, who let a two-goal lead slip against Frankfurt to end up drawing 2-2.
MUNICH, Germany, Sept 17, 2014 (AFP) - A superb strike by Jerome Boateng with a minute remaining earned Bayern Munich a dramatic 1-0 victory against Manchester City in their opening Champions League game of the season on Wednesday. An inspired performance by City goalkeeper Joe Hart looked to have secured his team a point in the meeting of the English and German champions at Munich's Allianz Arena. But former City defender Boateng hammered a volley into the net in the dying seconds, although his venomous strike appeared to take a deflection off Bayern's Mario Goetze on its way in. Hart had pulled off a string of fine saves from Thomas Mueller, David Alaba, Goetze and Boateng but the England international was finally beaten as Bayern earned a deserved win in their opening Group E fixture. Manchester City had come back from two goals down to beat Bayern 3-2 at the same venue in last season's group stages and they started with Edin Dzeko, who has yet to score this season, leading the attack instead of Sergio ...

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola has called Manchester United’s fall from grace ‘a warning to all the big European clubs’, and revealed that the Old Trafford club didn’t have enough power to buy his star players in the summer. United’s failure to qualify for this season’s Champions League sent shock-waves around Europe, and Guardiola believes that no big club can afford to get ahead of themselves in the way United might have done. ‘They [Manchester United] think: “We are unbeatable and strong” and they are not here. Maybe the next season they are out,’ the former Barcelona boss said. ‘That’s why football is magnificent. ‘Every single week you have to be ready. Every week you have got to show you are ready.’ Guardiola also confirmed that Louis Van Gaal had tried to sign Arjen Robben, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Mueller over the summer, but said that United simply couldn’t afford them. ‘They [United] didn’t have enough money,’ he said.
Bayern Munich manager Pep Guardiola says Manchester United cannot afford his players, despite counterpart Louis Van Gaal having spent over £150 million on new personnel this summer. Several of Bayern's key players, including striker Thomas Mueller, were on Van Gaal's original shopping list but the Dutchman was forced to buy elsewhere in order to improve United's squad. "They [United] don't have enough money," Guardiola said when asked if Bayern had turned down any bids from United for their players this summer. one name for pep?

Lionel Messi misses out as Bayern dominate European Player of the Year voting The shift in power within European football was underlined yesterday when two Bayern Munich players were among the nominees to be named the continent's top-three players, with Lionel Messi left out for the first time in eight years. Manuel Neuer, the Bayern goalkeeper, and his team-mate, winger Arjen Robben, were yesterday named by Uefa on the shortlist for European Footballer of the Year, alongside Cristiano Ronaldo of Real Madrid. Four-time winner Messi - who was second last year behind Bayern's Frank Ribery - did not make the cut from the final 10. The omission of the Argentine reflected the fact that Barcelona did not win either a Spanish or European honour last season, although the forward did lead his national side to the World Cup final. However, the fact that Neuer was one of three German players listed in the top five - Bayern team-mates Thomas Mueller and Philipp Lahm were the others - underlines the scale of the task ...

GERMANY RIOT 7-1 PAST THE HOST BRAZIL Germany advanced to the FIFA World Cup final after sweeping aside hosts Brazil with a stunning 7-1 victory on Tuesday at the Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Appearing in a record fourth straight semi-final, Germany netted five times in the opening 29 minutes to silence the overwhelmingly pro-Brazil crowd. After a brief resurgence by Brazil early in the second half, Germany added two more before Brazil pulled back a late consolation goal. Toni Kroos and Andre Schurrle scored twice for Germany, while Thomas Mueller, Sami Khedira and Miroslav Klose added one goal each. Klose's goal was the 16th in his World Cup career, setting a new record, as Infostrada Sports noted. Oscar scored Brazil's only goal in the 90th minute. The victory sent Germany into their eighth World Cup final and first since 2002, which they lost, 2-0, to Brazil in Yokohama, Japan. Joachim Low's side will play either Argentina or the Netherlands on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, where another win ...
The ref finally blows the whistle on a historic result for Germany. This game was over within 20 minutes and will rock the world of Brazilian soccer for years to come. Luiz Felipe Scolri’s team selection and tactics will be questioned, and rightfully so. Ferandinho and Hulk did not compete well enough in the midfield or contribute defensively, which left the Brazilian backline exposed. The back four is not absolved, however. Fullbacks Marcelo and Maicon where caught out of position far too often, and David Luiz and Dante were clearly not on the same page. Germany put on a fantastic display and were clinical in the final third. Sami Khedira was the engine in the midfield and his runs overwhelmed Brazil’s defenders. Thomas Mueller scored yet another goal and Miroslav Klose made history. All around, it was a fantastic performance for Jogi Low’s team. Up next for the Germans will be the winner

Voodoo priest to ‘bind the legs’ of German star By Eurosport 12 hours ago The Rio Report View gallery . Germany A Brazilian voodoo priest has promised to curse Germany before the World Cup quarter-final on Tuesday. Hosts Brazil face the Germans in Belo Horizonte, but if Helio Sillman has anything to do with it, Jogi Loew's side will have to not only deal with the Selecao, but black magic as well. [REPORTS: NEYMAR CONSIDERING DRASTIC ACTION FOR COMEBACK] Sillman has promised to curse an unnamed German player to hamper his side's chances, performing a ritual in his 'World of Orixas' shop in the northern neighbourhood of Madureira involving a voodoo doll. "I'll take their top player and bind his legs so he can't run on the pitch," Sillman told AFP. He didn't specify which German player he would be cursing, so Toni Kroos, Mario Goetze, Thomas Mueller and Mesut Ozil had all better watch out. Sillman has performed similar rituals before Brazil's other games in the tournament, although his curse of James Rod ...

Germany 2-1 Algeria; France 2-0 Nigeria Germany posted anextra-time victory over Algeria early today and France defeated Nigeria to extinguish Africa's World Cup hopes last night to set up a gigantic quarter-final showdown, reports AFP. A sublime flicked finish by Chelsea's Andre Schuerrle and a late Mesut Ozil strike gave Germany a 2-1 win over the Algerians in Porto Alegre to put Joachim Loew's side into the last eight. The Germans will meet European rivals France at the Maracana Stadium in Rio on Friday after Les Bleus ended Nigeria's campaign with a 2-0 win in Brasilia. Germany were pushed all the way by a physical but limited Algerian side, playing in the last 16 for the first time. Schuerrle put Germany ahead in the second minute of extra time after the match finished deadlocked at 0-0 after 90 minutes. Thomas Mueller skipped clear down the left and whipped in a low cross, and Schurrle steered the ball into the net with a deft flick of his heel. Ozil added a second on 120 minutes to put Germany 2-0 ...

Germany vs. Ghana: Tactical Preview of World Cup Group G Match The first round of group-stage matches is in the books at the FIFA World Cup 2014, and now we turn our attention to the second lot. Germany face Ghana in their next match, and they'll have to put in one *** of a performance to match their last outing against Portugal. Germany Joachim Low faces the unenviable task of following up on a glamorous 4-0 win. Die Mannschaft destroyed Portugal early this week in their opener, with Thomas Mueller bagging a hat-trick, Mario Goetze excelling and Mesut Ozil finding space between the lines with ease. The 4-3-3 formation sent out featured four centre-backs, Philipp Lahm in midfield and no Bastian Schweinsteiger; we could be set for a few changes, but which players might come in? Low is difficult to predict at the best of times, but how will he follow up such an emphatic win? Ghana Ghana's 4-2-3-1 formation was turgid, uninspiring and full of flaws. They played their opener against the USA's 4-4-2 and faile ...

Injured Coentrao out of World Cup - RIO DE JANEIRO: Portugal full-back Fabio Coentrao is out of the World Cup after suffering a thigh injury dealing another blow to the already fragile morale of the team, the Portuguese Federation (FPF) said Tuesday. Coentrao was forced off after 65 minutes of his country´s disastrous opening Group G 4-0 thrashing by Germany on Monday. Coentrao suffered a "second grade tear of the adductor longus muscle in the right thigh," said the FPF statement on their website. It was a bruising match for Portugal, who had Pepe sent-off for a petulant head-butt on hat-trick hero Thomas Mueller. The 26-year-old Real Madrid left-back Coentrao was amongst three players to undergo MRI scans on Tuesday. Forward Hugo Almeida, who lasted only 28 minutes in Salvador, suffered a first grade tear in his left hamstring while goalkeeper Rui Patricio also suffered a grade one tear in his thigh. Both are expected to return to full fitness before the end of the tournament.

While it has taken Van Persie and Messi three tournaments to find their feet, other strikers seem to thrive on the pressure-cooker atmosphere of the World Cup from day one. Thomas Mueller, joint tournament top scorer with five in South Africa four years ago, grabbed a hat trick Monday as Germany hammered Portugal 4-0. And with the weight of the football-loving host nation resting on his slender shoulders, 22-year-old Neymar slotted two goals on his World Cup debut as Brazil beat Croatia 3-1 in the tournament opener. Neymar failed to score against Mexico Tuesday thanks to amazing goalkeeping Guillermo Ochoa. But the pressure that some players thrive on seems to weigh others ...
Brazil delivering great quotes A World Cup that has delivered fantastic goals in the first round of group games has also produced gems away from the pitch with players and coaches coming up with memorable quotes. Croatia coach Niko Kovac got the tournament off to a fiery start by blasting the Japanese referee after their defeat by Brazil in the opening match. After the hosts were awarded a penalty when forward Fred theatrically fell to the ground, angry Kovac told reporters: "This was ridiculous today, and if we continue in this way we will have a circus. "If that's a penalty, we don't need to play football any more. Let's play basketball instead. "The lads played their hearts out but that was outright thuggery by a referee who was just out of his depth for a game of this magnitude." "Pressure? What pressure?" seemed to be a common thread running through the interview rooms from the tropical heat of Manaus in the north of Brazil to the rain and chill of Porto Alegre in the south. The World Cup may be spor ...
Germany scores 4 without a striker in line-up Coach Joachim Loew left Germany's all-time leading scorer on the bench in the World Cup opener against Portugal and it proved to be the right move. Loew raised some eyebrows in Germany when he decided to call up only one classic striker into his squad, the country's top-scoring Miroslav Klose. But Loew's decision to put his faith in Thomas Mueller paid dividends on Monday, when the attacking midfielder scored his first hat trick for Germany in a 4-0 romp over Portugal in their Group G opener. "He is such an unorthodox player, as a coach you never know what he is about to do," Loew said. "For opponents, he is very unpredictable, he only has one thought on his mind and that is to score a goal." Klose has surpassed legendary Gerd Mueller with 69 goals for Germany and needs one more in the World Cup to tie the record of 15 held by Brazil's Ronaldo. But even such credentials were not enough to get the 36-year-old Klose a spot in the starting lineup. Loew has been f ...
Why does Andrew Garfield reminds me of Thomas Mueller
Thomas Mueller has more World Cup goals than Messi's and Ronaldo combined lol xD
Loving life with Thomas Mueller in ma dream team :-)
Mexico has just exposed Brazil's Achilles heel, no talisman at the front! Fred and Jo just don't measure up when other countries boast of names such as Thomas Mueller etc.
In the old days this was called a headbutt ".Pepe leant into Germany striker Thomas Mueller with his head, making contact and applying pressure."

" Odds are that that encounter sealed Pepe’s fate in the 37th minute. He stuck his hand up in the face of Thomas Mueller, causing the German to go down as if pole-axed (there was precious little valour to go around the pitch on both sides). Then, Pepe did something beyond stupid. He leaned down and headbutted the German as he sat on the ground." - remember when this happened at a lacrosse game said no one ever...
Do you think in Thomas Mueller's contracts, it stipulates that he must be provided with those funny short socks? loool
You're in the shallow end of the pool tonight Brazil, so NO DIVING PLEASE!!! (Thomas Mueller you as well!)
Three goals in one match, in the opening match against such an opponent is just great - Thomas Mueller
Day 5 of the World Cup 2014 In the first match of the day Germany announced their arrival at Brazil 2014 with a truly emphatic victory against Portugal! Thomas Mueller fired the first hat-trick of this FIFA World Cup as Germany hammered a despairing Portugal 4-0 As World Cup openers go, this was about as bad as it gets for Portugal. Demolished by Germany, key defender Pepe sent off for headbutting Muller, another possibly out of the tournament with injury. Let's hope Ronaldo and his team manage step up their game in their next match. Then we witnessed the first goal-less draw of the tournament between Iran and Nigeria. A must win for the Super Eagles they failed to break through the Iranians who mostly stuck to defense and create enough chances. So Nigerias next match against Bosnia is a MUST MUST win! The last game of the day brought us another fastest goal of the tournament with the Americnas scoring just after 32 seconds (which is the 5th fastest goal in all the World Cups ever!) The Black Stars tried ...
Portugal defender Pepe faces a three-match ban for head-butting Thomas Mueller, but the German striker has also come under fire over his theatrical reaction.
Arsenal's Lukas Podolski delivered on his pre-match promise to get a dressing room photograph with German Chancellor Angela Merkel after Germany's rout of Portugal at the World Cup finals on Monday. The 29-year-old Gunners star had previously said he wanted to get a selfie with the German leader who was at Salvador's Arena Fonte Nova to watch the match which saw Thomas Mueller score a hat-trick. The German leader visited the team dressing room to congratulate Joachim Loew's side on their 4-0 win in their opening Group G match and Podolski seized his chance. "4-0 win, awesome start! And here…

Check out our five major talking points after Germany crushed Portugal 4-0 thanks to a stunning hat-trick from Thomas Mueller.
This is so annoying that I sent an email to on this, afterall the guy scored a hat-trick against POR!!! This is my email : The name of the German player who scored a hat trick against POR? His name is Thomas MUELLER not MULLER, there's an "E" after the "U" in GER, it's called "umlaut U", Ü or written as "UE" It's pronounced as ... well go to Google Translate and sound it out. I expect your sports guys to say it correctly next time. Thank you. No, I am Chinese, not German.
Thomas Mueller is the 49th Footballer who scored hat-trick in World Cup Final Stage. In 2010 World Cup Gonzjalo Higuain of Argentina scored the only hattrick in that World Cup against South Korea. Gabriel Batistuta (Argentina), Sandor Kocsis (Hungary), Just Fontaine (France) and Gerd Muellar (Germany) scored 2 hattricks in World Cup. Geoff Hurst scored three for England against West Germany in the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final match.
Astounding that no one comments on the poor sportsmanship or should I say great acting on display at the Soccer World Cup. Beautiful game - I think not. Thomas Mueller - Oscar for best acting...
And the Oscar for Best Actor goes to. Thomas Mueller
Thomas Mueller has 8 goals in World Cup finals at the age of 24, spare a thought here too Ronaldo de Lima.
World Cup SIDE REMARKS It is not clear if Portuguese play-maker Cristiano Ronaldo, an accomplished striker in his own right, learnt anything from the soccer lesson taught by Germany in their 4-0 spanking of Portugal but, the world took note of the second World Cup appearance of the foraging Thomas Mueller who, scored a hat-trick to position the 'German Machine' for a favourable shot at the World Cup for the fourth time. Beset by errant headers and lacking in lethal finishes, the Super Eagles of Nigeria appeared humdrum in their ding-dong duel with unheralded Iran. Except for the goal-keeping abilities of Enyeama which were on display, the serial exertions of Mikel Obi and later, flashes of brilliance by Odemwingie, the goalless draw has not inspired much confidence in a team that is carrying the hope of 170 million Nigerians! Stunned into incoherence via a first minute goal by underrated USA, the Ghanaian squad fought gallantly to gain an equalizer only to be defeated through a goal that came in the dying ...

Morning one and all. We have a jubilant Thomas Mueller on the Sport360 front cover this morning after the striker fired a hat-trick in the 4-0 win over Portugal. Joachim Loew's side looked hugely impressive but can they become the first European side to win the World Cup in South America?

Reading TNP World Cup reports is annoying. Don't understand its pagination...World Cup reports separated by racing, golf, motorcycling etc...But at least got Germany-Portugal match report which ST doesn't. How come ah? My TNP is morning edition. But that poor Thomas Mueller kena headbutted by the Portugal goalie while he is sitting on the ground? Really odd picture. ST has a really nice pix of Lionel Messi and six defenders when he scored. Cute! Cute! Like choirboy!
Did we not see Thomas Mueller dominate the last World Cup? how could we forget the guy who set the World Cup on fire?
Germany celebrated their record 100th World Cup match in style by steamrolling Portugal 4-0 with Thomas Mueller scoring this edition's first hat- trick in a one-sided match here today. In the Group G match which marked a century of World Cup matches for Germany, the most for any country, the three-time champions destroyed Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal with Mueller leading a brilliant attacking brand of football with goals in the eighth, 45+1 and 78th minutes. Defender Mats Hummels made his presence felt with a 32nd minute headed goal in an afternoon kick-off match which saw Portugal centre back Pepe being sent off in the 37th minute after an ill-tempered tangle with Mueller. The match at Arena Fonte Nova, however, did not live up to the billing of a marquee clash with Germany toying with their opponents and then made worse for Portugal after Pepe's sending off. Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo, who made it to the Portugal playing eleven after being bothered by a left-knee injury in the build-up, made little im ...

Funnily,Manchester United were never in for Cesc Fabregas.Louis Van Gaal's list never included the Spaniard. With Juan Mata occupying the middle with Kagawa,United needed a defensive minded player and so Fabregas was never an option.Arsenal was never interested in bringing him back,Man City bought FC Porto' midfielder, Fernando while Man Utd's Louis Van Gaal never made him an option. He prefers tackling, tracking back and defensive minded midfielders and is confident of landing Kevin Strootman, while Arturo Vidal,Koke,Pogba,Enzo Perez and Thomas Mueller are some of the players he's looking at.Though Mueller is more attacking minded than the lot.
Germany and France were held to draws while Chelsea duo Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku scored for Belgium in the latest batch of World Cup warm-ups on Sunday. Fellow Brazil-bound Cameroon came from behind to claim a 2-2 draw against Germany. All four goals came in an entertaining second-half as Cameroon, coached by German Volker Finke, came within a whisker of a historic first win over Germany. The Africans took a shock lead through another Chelsea player, Samuel Eto'o, on 62 minutes only for Germany to equalise four minutes later through Thomas Mueller. German replacement Andre Schuerrle then gave the hosts the lead before Cameroon left-wing Eric Choupo-Moting, who plies his trade in the Bundesliga for Mainz 05, popped up with the 78th-minute equaliser. Germany coach Joachim Loew was unimpressed with his side's display, especially from Arsenal's midfielder Mesut Ozil, who produced a low-key performance.
disappointed he hasn’t become an integral part of the Bayern family, like Lahm, Alaba, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Thomas Mueller.

United given list by Van Gaal: Louis Van Gaal has given Ed Woodward, United's executive vice-chairman, an A, B and C list of desired transfer targets, despite confirmation of the Dutchman's hiring as the club's new manager being further delayed. The Guardian reports that Van Gaal will not be officially installed as United's new boss until Sunday at the earliest - the first rest day for the Holland squad - but has still told United to continue with transfer business until then. "Prime potential acquisitions" include Bayern Munich trio Arjen Robben, Thomas Mueller and Toni Kroos, Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels and Luke Shaw of Southampton. Paper Round's view: That's one exciting A list and while it cannot be expected that all five arrive this summer - there's not enough room in the side to keep them all happy - even two or three new arrivals would be a huge boost for United. Robben, Mueller and Kroos are the names most likely to get juices flowing, but it is the two defenders of that list - Hummels and Sh ...

"Sometimes you were playing, sometimes you were on the bench and sometimes you were just left at home,'' he said on kicker.de. "That was a new situation for all of us. Moyes laments United's 'school-boy error' 10 Apr 2014 00:33:25 David Moyes admits Manchester United made a 'school-boy error' by throwing away a second-half lead at Bayern Munich as his side crashed out of the Champions League's quarterfinals. Champions Bayern romped to a 3-1 victory at home to United in Wednesday's quarterfinal, second-leg to win the tie 4-2 on aggregate. United squandered a 1-0 lead following Patrice Evra's fantastic 57th-minute strike as Bayern equalised just 69 seconds later through Mario Mandzukic, the first of Munich's three goals in the final half an hour. Thomas Mueller tapped Bayern into the lead before Arjen Robben slotted the hosts third to knock Moyes' United out of the competition and keep the defending champions on course for the May 24 final in Lisbon. "I thought the players did a great job tonight, the only crime was that we let them equalise after just a few seconds," admitted Moyes. "I have a team of experienced players and something you learn as a school boy is to conce ...

Thomas Müller is one of the MOST underrated players in the world.
Bayern Munich head up, Arsenal head out Wednesday 12 March 2014 = A second-half Bastian Schweinsteiger goal gave Bayern a brief lead before Arsenal’s Lukas Podolski equalised with a thunderbolt of a shot as the tie finished 3-1 on aggregate. “We put in a very, very good first-half and controlled the game by giving away no goal chances,” said Bayern captain Philipp Lahm. “But we made a few too many mistakes in the second-half.” Arsenal, who also went out at the same stage of the competition to the same opponents last season, failed to overturn their 2-0 deficit from the first leg three weeks ago. Amidst hopes of repeating last season’s shock 2-0 win in Munich, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger made six changes from the team which lost to Bayern in London. Bayern coach Pep Guardiola made three changes from the first leg, switching from a 4-1-4-1 in London to the 4-2-3-1 formation used in last season’s European final. “We didn’t gave them many chances, we had expected them to push forward a bit mo ...

Bayern hold off Arsenal to progress Bayern Munich, a shadow of the team that have been so imperious in the Bundesliga this season, survived a shaky second half and missed a late penalty against Arsenal on Tuesday to reach the Champions League quarterfinals. The holders looked less than all-conquering in a 1-1 second-leg draw against Arsenal who were left with too much to do after losing 2-0 at home in the opening match of the last-16 encounter. Runaway leaders Bayern have dropped only four points all season in the Bundesliga, and blasted 15 goals in their previous three games, but were well below their best against the Londoners at the Allianz Arena. Bastian Schweinsteiger broke the deadlock in the 55th minute before Bayern old boy Lukas Podolski replied almost immediately for Arsenal who grew in confidence and brought out goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's eccentric side. Bayern Munich could attempt to hijack Julian Draxler's proposed move from Schalke to Arsenal, it has emerged. The 20-year-old, widely regarded as one of the best young players in the world, is thought to be closing in on a January switch to the Emirates Stadium, with Arsene Wenger keen to speed up a deal for one of his summer transfer targets. However, SportsDirect News understands that Bayern have also been keen to snap up the exciting attacking midfielder, and may themselves try to persuade him to move this month. ADVERTISEMENT Pep Guardiola's side are already well stocked in that position, with a world class selection of Franck Ribery, Arjen Robben, Thomas Mueller, Mario Goetze and Thiago Alcantara available to play behind main striker Mario Mandzukic, though the treble winners are keen to land German football's biggest prospect. Manchester City fought back from two goals down to earn a 3-2 win at Bayern Munich last night and break the holders' record 10-match Champions League winning streak. The German giants also suffered their first defeat in major competition since coach Pep Guardiola took charge in June. Bayern also fell to their first home defeat -- after 18 wins -- since losing 2-0 at home to Arsenal in last season's knock-out stages of the Champions League in March. With both teams already through to the knock-out stages, City avenged October's 3-1 defeat to Bayern at the Etihad Stadium, but still finished second to the Germans in Group D with both teams on 15 points. It had started ominously for City as Bayern produced a flawless opening 20 minutes to race into a 2-0 lead after 11 minutes. Goals by Thomas Mueller and Mario Goetze left Bayern cruising before David Silva pulled one back for City as it finished 2-1 at the break. Captain Aleksandar Kolarov then converted a penalty to pull level on 59 minutes before James Miln ...
Goetze stars as Bayern sink BVB Munich's Germany star Mario Goetze came off the bench to score the opening goal in the European champions' comprehensive 3-0 win at his ex- club Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. Goetze, who joined Bayern for €37 million in July after 12 years at Dortmund, gave the perfect reply to the chorus of boos he received at Borussia's Westfalenstadion. The 21-year-old smashed home a Thomas Mueller pass on 66 minutes, before the flood gates opened and Arjen Robben and Mueller added late goals in the final five minutes. "A 3-0 win sounds clear, but they matched us for most of the game, the 1-0 lead we took was decisive," said Robben, who captained the Netherlands for the first time on Tuesday. "They also had their chances. I enjoy duels like this. "How many small boys dream of playing in games like this?" This was a commanding performance and was the first time Bayern have beaten Dortmund in six Bundesliga attempts, dating back to February 2010. Again, Munich ran out winners in a repla ...
