Thomas J. Watson

Thomas John Watson, Sr. (February 17, 1874 – June 19, 1956) was the chairman and CEO of International Business Machines (IBM), who oversaw that company's growth into an international force from 1914 to 1956. Watson developed IBM's distinctive management style and corporate culture, and turned the company into a highly-effective selling organization, based largely around punched card tabulating machines.

“Were you born flawed and ill-equipped, and expected to spend your life “putting in” what was “left out” at birth? No. Nothing is missing. The goal is to improve and become more of who you already are! Change is painful, but pain is a signal to grow, not to suffer. Once we learn the lesson the pain is teaching us, the pain goes away. Change from the outside-in is reactive which creates pressure. However, change from the inside-out is proactive which creates power – power to adapt, knowing that it’s not what happens, but what we do with what happens that makes or breaks us; power to focus, knowing we will not have regrets for things we did, we will only have regrets for things we did not do.” - Dan Clark "Every decision you make -- every decision -- is not a decision about what to do. It's a decision about Who You Are. When you see this, when you understand it, everything changes. You begin to see life in a new way. All events, occurrences, and situations turn into opportunities to do what ...

Sleepy Hollow is a village in Mount Pleasant, New York in Westchester County, New York, United States. It is located on the eastern bank of the Hudson River, about 30 miles (48 km) north of midtown Manhattan in New York City, and is served by the Philipse Manor stop on the Metro-North Hudson Line. Originally incorporated as North Tarrytown in the late 19th century, in 1996 the village officially adopted the traditional name for the area, known to many via the Washington Irving story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow".[1] To the south of Sleepy Hollow is the village of Tarrytown, and to the north and east are unincorporated parts of Mount Pleasant. The population of the village at the 2010 census was 9,870.[2] The village is home to the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, where Washington Irving is buried, along with Andrew Carnegie, Walter P. As It Shrinks In A Growing Market, Does IBM Have A Strategy? IBM’s founder, Thomas J. Watson, Sr. coined the slogan, Think that appeared all over the company starting in the 1930s. It was a brilliant slogan but one thing led to another and 20 years ago — after an $8 billion loss and shares selling at $12 each, IBM came close to biting the dust. After declaring in July 1993, ”The last thing IBM needs right now is a vision,” Lou Gerstner saved Big Blue and his successor, Sam Palmisano oversaw a 10.2% annual increase in its stock price during his nine years as IBM’s chairman and CEO. But in January 2012, Virginia Rometty took over– and after missing its quarterly numbers for the first time in eight years, canning “at least 1,300 people,” and shrinking revenues in a corporate IT market that’s growing at 4.1% in 2013 to $3.8 trillion – I now wonder: Does IBM have a strategy? To be fair, she has only been in the job for 18 months and during that time, IBM stock has risen at a 7.1% annual ra ...

The Night People vs. "Creeping Meatballism"   Jean Shepherd (author and narrator of A Christmas Story) Published in Mad Magazine, Volume 1, Number 32, April, 1957   IN THE LANGUAGE OF "DAY PEOPLE", I suppose "Night People" may be called many things. Like "soreheads", "wise-guys", "egg-heads", "long-hairs", "outsiders", etc. Whatever they're called, the fact remains they're a genuine phenomenon. They're the people who refuse to be taken in by the "Day World" philosophy of "Creeping Meatballism."   The average person today thinks in certain prescribed patterns. People today have a genuine fear of stepping out and thinking on their own. "Creeping Meatballism" is this rejection of individuality. It's conformity. The American brags about being a great individualist, when actually he's the world's least individual person. The idea of thinking individually has become a big joke. Old Thomas J. Watson of I.B.M. came up with the idea for a sign which just said: "Think". And today, it's a gag! This is ...
WHAT IS COMMITMENT A great business leader once said: "...the basic philosophy, spirit, and drive of an organization have far more to do with its relative achievements than do technological or economic resources, organizational structure, innovation, and timing. All these things weigh heavily in success. But they are, I think, transcended by how strongly the people in the organization believe in its basic precepts and how faithfully they carry them out." (from Thomas J. Watson, Jr., A Business and its Beliefs - The ideas that helped build IBM). As true as this is for the success of a corporation, it is even more so for the individual. The most important single factor in individual success is COMMITMENT. Commitment ignites action. To commit is to pledge yourself to a certain purpose or line of conduct. It also means practicing your beliefs consistently. There are, therefore, two fundamental conditions for commitment. The first is having a sound set of beliefs. There is an old saying that goes, "Stand for s ...

Physics of the Future Physics of the Future: How Science Will Shape Human Destiny and Our Daily Lives by the Year 2100 is a 2011 book by theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, author of Hyperspace and Physics of the Impossible.[1][2] It speculates on the possibilities of future technological development over the next 100 years. Interviewing notable scientists of their field of research Kaku lays out his vision of coming developments in medicine, computing, artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, and energy production,[3]stating that "this book most closely resembles my book Visions."[1] Kaku writes how he hopes his predictions for 2100 will be as successful as science fiction writer Jules Verne's 1863 novel Paris in the Twentieth Century. Kaku contrasts Verne's foresight against U.S. Postmaster General John Wanamaker, who in 1893 predicted that mail would still be delivered by stagecoach and horseback in 100 years' time, and IBM chairman Thomas J. Watson, who in 1943 is alleged to have said "I think there is ...

►PROBLEM SOLVING.:- Just solve it. How do you deal with a problem? Thomas J. Watson, Head of IBM, has this to say, "Solve it right or wrong. If you solve it wrong, it will come back & slap you on the face & then you can solve it right. Lying dead in water and doing nothing is comfortable because it is without risk; but it is an absolutely a destructive way to manage a business." ►Quiters are not winners and winners are not quitters. ► There is no secret to success.
