On 29 August 2010, a 62-year-old man named Thomas Richard Cowan entered Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, Tennessee, armed with two handguns and confronted the school's principal, pointing one of the weapons at her head. After a receptionist who observed the confrontation sounded an alert, a Sullivan Co. Sheriffs Deputy named Carolyn Gudger who was stationed at the school as a resource officer arrived at the scene and held Cowan at bay until more deputies arrived and shot him: Central dispatch received a call reporting a gunman in the school at 9:15 a.m. Save a student or two who were arriving late, and school principal Melanie Riden, the front entranceway and hall were relatively empty. According to Dr. Jubal Yennie, Sullivan County director of schools, entrances are locked at that time, and it's unclear how Cowan made entry. Sheriff Wayne Anderson said Cowan was "irate," and immediately pointed a .380-caliber, semi-automatic handgun at Riden's head. A receptionist in an adjacent office saw th ...
Many thanks to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Director Mark Gwyn and their staff for inviting me and others attend the TBI Citizens Academy; graduation ceremony was held tonight and I was thrilled to see LaVergne Police Chief and former THP Colonel Mike Walker be our commencement speaker. Proud to hear Chief Walker and Director Gwyn both speak of fighting the synthetic drug problem and officers and agents with a "servants heart" serving and protecting the public. Mike has a big heart for people and could barely get through the speech without becoming emotional when he spoke of his THP colleagues that he has lost in the line of duty. Below is a picture from a raid on a Tobacco store, glad to see Speaker Beth Harwell attend the press conference.
{All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. ~ Edmund Burke} Unicoi County's "good ole boys" are ruthless when they are afraid that their about to be exposed or their power base is threatened. Why do you think they don't want me to be elected County Mayor? What would I find if I got inside the court house with full access to all the files? The following is a sample of what has happened to me since 2011 as a result of my attempts to help Unicoi County citizens and elected officials when they ask me to look into town and county government operations: (1) In 2011 a County Commissioner asked me to do a study on an elected officials very high budget demands and threats to sue the Unicoi County taxpayers if he didn’t get what he was asking for. When I tried to present my findings in a budget meeting in the Unicoi County court house, that elected official yelled at me and harangued me to disrupt my presentation. (2) In 2011 I was the victim of an attempted carjacking, but was abl ...

The pending case against former Henry County Circuit Court Deputy Deanna Treece is still in the discovery phase and has been passed on to August 5 for its next hearing. Treece, 63, Springville, was indicted earlier this year on charges related to missing funds from the clerk's office while she was employed. She was arrested by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation following her indictment. She is charged with one count of theft over $10,000 and one count of official misconduct. An audit conducted by the State Comptroller’s office discovered approximately $29,000 missing from the office between July 2007 and August 2011.
Byron Looper Found Dead In Prison Cell In Morgan County Posted: Jun 26, 2013 1:08 PM CDT Updated: Jun 26, 2013 1:54 PM CDT MORGAN COUNTY, Tenn. – Byron Looper, the man convicted of murdering state Senator Tommy Burks in 1998, was found dead in his prison cell at the Morgan County Correctional Complex on Wednesday morning. The Tennessee Department of Correction said the 48-year-old was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 10:10 a.m. CDT. Commissioner Derrick Schofield has requested the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to assume the lead in the investigation into Looper's death. Looper, a former Putnam County property assessor, was convicted of murder in the 1998 fatal shooting of Burks as he sat in his pickup truck near his Cumberland County farm. Looper, who legally changed his middle name to "Low Tax," was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Investigators said he killed Burks in order to win his seat in the state Legislature. Burks's widow, Charlotte Burks, was elected to fill her l ...
The house feels strange with just Bailey and I at home. Shep is off on a week's adventure in New Orleans for TechEd compliments of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations. He is in geek heaven! Today he sent me a picture of him with Chewbacca and Princess Leia. Right then and there I thanked God for not being forced to go with him this time. Although I am a little jealous that he ate at Mother's tonight. I could use a dressed roast beef Po-Boy with debris. Yum. He will come home with tons of t-shirts, jump drives, koozies, and other geek paraphernalia. I am looking forward to the Microsoft Surface Pro tablet he picked up for me for a mere $400, however. Ah, one of the perks of being a tech geek's wife.
Following a manhunt, a Benton County man was arrested early Sunday morning by the Henry County Sheriff's Office for the first-degree murder of his father. John Eric Childress, 31, of the Camden area, is being held at the Henry County Jail on $1 million bond. Sheriff's deputies, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Tennessee Highway Patrol and the District Attorney's office were still working the scene of the murder at 11770 Hwy. 641S on Sunday morning. The residence is near the Benton County border. According to Sheriff Monte Belew, Deputy Clyde Sulcer was called to the scene around 4 p.m. Saturday and found Timothy Childress, 52, of that address, deceased inside the house of an apparent gunshot wound. Further investigation led investigators to begin searching for the younger Childress. Belew said alerts and teletypes were sent out to law enforcement all over the state for John Childress, who was finally found at 2 a.m. Sunday walking along Rushing Rd. by Deputy Corp. Bryan Bennett. The elder Chil ...
Statewide Partnership Addresses Human Trafficking in Tennessee Republican lawmakers joined law enforcement officials from across the state this year to address the issue of human trafficking in Tennessee. In 2010, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation conducted a study regarding human sex trafficking in the state. The results of the study found trafficking and sex slavery in Tennessee is more common than previously known. The report cited that one in four children who run away from home are approached for commercial sexual exploitation within 48 hours of running away. In addition, the average age of a sex trafficking victim is 13, according to the study. Building on the success Republicans had during the 2011-2012 legislative session to cut down on crimes such as this across the state, GOP lawmakers introduced a crime prevention package this year to address issues related to crimes against children, criminal gang offenses, and human organ trafficking. In total, fifteen bills were filed, including: House B ...

KNOXVILLE — Students, faculty and staff at Sweetwater High School will "go purple" on Monday, in honor of a freshman there who died when he accidentally shot himself with a family gun, officials said. Matthew Daniels, 15, died Thursday evening at his family's home on Morris Street, authorities said. Sweetwater Police Chief Eddie Byrum said in a news release that no foul play was suspected. Per procedure, Sweetwater police secured the weapon and the Monroe County District Attorney contacted the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, who took over the investigation, he said. Sgt. Marty Kyle said Matthew didn't intent to shoot himself.

Roane County can look back on 2012 as a news-making year. A petition began circulating around Rockwood to oust Mayor James Watts and City Council member Jane Long. It had began with many in the community calling for both to step down, but not enough signatures could be gathered. The Tennessee Valley Authority continued it’s cleanup efforts of the Dec. 2008 coal ash spill in Kingston. The utility held several meetings with the community to track it’s progress and to get feedback on the operation. There were problems within the Rockwood Water, Sewer and Gas Utility as a state audit discovered that money was being switched around between the three entities. A couple were charged in the starvation death of their 2 year old son Clifford Dotsun. The political race for the office of County Property Assessor became grim, as candidate James T. Woods took his life in the yard of then property assessor Teresa Kirkham. Later in the year, property assessor-elect David Morgan called in the Tennessee Bureau of Inves ...
Statement by Memphis Black Autonomy Copwatch: Return to Duty of Police Officer Who Killed Black Teenager Is a “Cover-Up” The return of Memphis Police Department Officer Terrance Shaw to desk duty on December 8 shows that the review by the so-called Tennessee Bureau of Investigation of Shaw’s killing of 15-year-old Justin Thompson is a patent fraud and that the “fix is in” for this case. Shaw’s return to duty and the MPD’s bogus hiring of consultants to study the department’s disciplinary process clearly show that Memphis police officers can get away with murder and that the entire law enforcement and political establishment in Memphis is in on this cruel game of cover-up. Memphis Black Autonomy Copwatch rejects the criminalization of black youth. We are committed to justice in the case of Justin Thompson—a kid whose life was stolen by Shaw, a corrupt killer cop who has killed two human beings and two animals in less than five years. We believe that this trigger-happy cop will kill ...
TENNESSEE Amber Alert UPDATE $1,500 REWARD BEING OFFERED BY FAMILY: A reward is being offered for information about the two young children missing since a deadly house fire in Bedford County. There has been no sign of 9-year-old Chloie Leverette or her 7-year old brother, Gage Daniel since the fire that killed their grandparents, Leon & Molly McClaran in September. Family members and friends are now offering a reward of up to $1,500 for information leading to a resolution in the case. They added the amount of that reward could increase as more donations are made. An Amber Alert remains active for the two kids, although the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said they do no suspect foul play. The TBI did not ask any other states to issue Amber Alerts because they simply have no evidence to show the two children were taken anywhere. Originally officials thought Chloie and Gage died in the fire, but numerous searches turned up nothing. A Tennessee Amber Alert was issued Friday night for Chloie Leverette and G ...

From Anderson County Sheriff Chief Deputy Mark Lucas: As most of you are aware we had a deputy involved shooting this morning on Pine Ridge Road in the Marlow community of Anderson County. At about 10:22am, a deputy initiated a traffic stop of a car on Pine Ridge Road. The driver pulled into a driveway, jumped from the car, and fled on foot. The deputy gave chase and a short distance later was confronted by the suspect where a struggle ensued with the suspect trying to take the deputy's duty weapon. The suspect was shot and killed. The deputy was transported by Anderson County EMS to Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge where he was treated and released. The deputy along with all other personnel involved in the incident will receive critical incident debriefings over the next few days.
