MUMBAI: Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL) has said the spectrum it has, including the one it won in the latest round of auction, would help it tap an expected surge in demand for digital services in India.   The Mukesh Ambani-owned company won spectrum in the 1800MHz band for Rs 11,054 crore in 14 of India's 22 service areas in the auction ended on Thursday. These 14 circles, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata , Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu , together account for 71% of the current industry revenue. The company already holds 20MHz in the 2300MHz band for providing pan-India high-speed internet services.   Reliance Jio is yet to roll out services, although it has been holding the broadband spectrum since 2010, when it spent as much as Rs 13,000 crore to acquire it.   On Friday, the company said it is gearing up to launch fourth-generation (4G) services on different standards of the long-term evolution (LTE) technology. "Reliance Jio's seamless 4G services using FDD-LTE on 1800MHz and TDD-LTE on 2300MHz th ...

PDS: Much to be hopeful about How will we survive, if the government shuts down the Fair Price Shop?’ said an alarmed old lady in Tamil Nadu when asked about the Public Distribution System being replaced with cash transfers. Her response conveys the importance of the PDS in the life of a common person in many parts of the country. The Public Distribution System (PDS) was one of the five entitlements programmes included in the PEEP Survey. Under the PDS, eligible households get subsidized food commodities – mainly wheat and rice – in accordance with the type of ration card they possess. The PDS usually gets negative attention in the mass and electronic media for being ineffective and for making a big hole in the government budget. But recent survey findings question this perception and give some reasons to be optimistic. In most states, there are at least three categories among PDS cardholders – ‘above poverty line’ (APL), ‘below poverty line’ (BPL) and Antyodaya. As per central norms, BPL ...

A mosque in Chennai which helps students crack IAS The Makkah Masjid on Chennai's busy Anna Salai road is like any other mosque as you approach it. But enter and walk up the stairs and you find 40 young men listening to a lecture or thumbing through reference books. They are all preparing for the civil services examination. The mosque doubles as a coaching centre for the Indian Administrative Services or IAS exam, to help bright young men from the community become bureaucrats. "This is our way of really empowering our community as we are only used as vote banks by political parties. The tokenism has not empowered us," says Moulana Shamsudeen Qasimi, the chief Imam. He says no Muslim candidate from Tamil Nadu has cleared the IAS exam in 18 years and his effort is to reverse that unfortunate statistic. It costs thirty lakh rupees a year to coach 40 people and the Moulana has set up a trust called Alagiya Kadan for this. The community, he says, generously supports the cause. Congress in troubled waters in Tamil Nadu With both AIADMK and DMK shutting the doors, the Congress in Tamil Nadu may contest the parliamentary polls without an alliance with either of the two major Dravidian parties. The MMR dropped from 212 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2007-09 to 178 in 2010-12, India is behind the target of 103 deaths per live births to be achieved by 2015 under the United Nations-mandated Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The MMR in southern states fell 17% from 127 to 105, closer to the MDGs. Assam and Uttar Pradesh/Uttarakhand were the worst performing states, with an MMR of 328 and 292, respectively. Kerala and Tamil Nadu have surpassed the MDG with an MMR of 66 and 90, respectively. “There is not much to celebrate with the decline in maternal mortality as we are still far behind developed countries and even developing countries like Nepal and Bangladesh, which have surpassed us,” said Amit Sengupta, of Jana Swasthya Abhiyan (People’s Health Movement), a civil society organization. The “government mandate to institutionalize (child) deliveries will have marginal results till problems like early marriage of girls, nutrition of women and gender equity are not looked at,” he said.
Our hero’s fought for our independence, well being and welfare. Some sacrificed their lives and some lead us from the front towards an idea of independent India. An idea for which we fought for 200 years and a large group of educated population regret for its failure. A sovereign secularly democratic country having been elected by the people of this country is being called a failure model. The question really is not about its idea or its constitution but it’s about the people. An idea is a failure only when people couldn’t implement it or when people couldn’t understand it. The elected body today wins of creed, colour, race, sometimes caste or gender and mostly money. A country where unity is in the roots of diversity, the countries responsibility has to be divided equally. If there is a case of rape in Delhi, people of Tamil Nadu comment about women’s dress code. If there is a racial discrimination on North Eastern people, people of Bangalore build separate hostels for them. The problem in Indi ...

SNEHADEVI: ANOTHER SANIA IN THE MAKING Ramu/Hyderabad:The world came to a standstill for Snehadevi S Reddy when she received the news about the demise of her mother on May 26. The 16-year-old had to swallow the bitter fact to focus on her training at 4 Slam Tennis Academy in Barcelona, Spain. The fortitude of the Tamil Nadu girl reaped dividends though the bereavement haunts her. Being nowhere (256 rank) in the world in 2012, Snehadevi zoomed herself to 76 this year. She bagged a golden double at Hyderabad ITF Tournament as she won the singles title by trouncing the strong local player Pranjala on Saturday. A day before, Snehadevi proclaimed her superb form by sharing the top honours with Druthi Venugopal in doubles. Snehadevi carries all traits of a champion and is unquestionably a force to reckon with at international arena. Rightfully, hence, she is considered as ‘the next Sania Mirza’ of India. “I am doing well due to my stint in Spain,” Snehadevi, a member of the abruptly ended Mahesh Bhupat ...

Tamil Nadu gets 80 new CBSE affiliated schools Around 80 new Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) affiliated schools have come up in Tamil Nadu in the past 1 year, adding to the growth of CBSE which is effective nationally since 1952. The total number of CBSE affiliated schools are now at a grand figure of 14,841. A lot of parents are sending their children to CBSE affiliated schools, making a switch from the state education boards. Studying under state board of education certainly offers a number of benefits like it is easier to score marks, relevancy in subjects and preferred admissions under state institutes. But, CBSE has its own set of benefits for students. A dual pattern which has few of the school branches affiliated to their state board and a few school branches affiliated to CBSE, is being followed by many schools in Tamil Nadu. The core aim of establishment of CBSE was to provide uninterrupted studies for children of parents who work in a transferable job. CBSE syllabi will aid children ...
The Writing is on the Wall. Mohan Guruswamy The creation of Telangana, almost sixty years after the people of the region voiced their misgivings about being co-opted into Andhra Pradesh is yet another step in rationalizing and restructuring the Union of States that India is meant to be. India was never meant to be a union of linguistic states, but a union of well governed and manged states. Thus, the demand for newer administrative units will be a continuous one, one that seeks to bring distant provincial governments in remote capitals closer to the people. Even as the rites to formally create Telangana are underway, old and dormant demands are surfacing. Only this morning the BJP announced that it was in favour of a Vidharba. Maywati has several times expressed a view that UP needs to be broken into three or four states. Even in Tamil nadu Dr.S.Ramadoss of the Pattal Makkali Katchi (PMK), a very regional political party has mooted a bifurcation of Tamil Nadu, with the northern districts being carved out ...

"We will work across four states. Our coaches will come and work with Special Olympics coaches to help share information and knowledge. We will provide these coaches with an insight into the way we work, and try to develop them. These coaches will then work with the next group of coaches and help expand the programme," Cornwell said while speaking exclusively to TOI in the city. “Sonia used Rajiv’s death for power” - Sonia in all fairness to her husband life she should have given priority to this case instead of using the issue to come to power. -The decision by Jayalalithaa giving an ultimatum to the central government will only ensure the growth of anarchism - Rahul Gandhi says he is concerned about the decision. What was he doing all these years instead of acting upon the case considering his government was in power? In probably one of the biggest lows where the national security of India is concerned, an ugly political game has broken over the killers of Rajiv Gandhi. While the Tamil Nadu government has given an ultimatum of three days to decide on whether the killers of Rajiv Gandhi whose death sentences were commuted should be released, the Union Government is contemplating moving the Supreme Court on this issue. The lead investigator of the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, K Ragothaman whose controversial book, Conspiracy to Kill Rajiv Gandhi: From CBI Files, raised ...

AIADMK, DMK, BJP, SAD, NC, PDP and AAP are sending wrong signals to the nation by voicing for the perpetrators who acted against the state. What AIADMK did in Tamil Nadu, AAP did in Delhi by requesting pardon for the murderer of democratically elected CM Beant singh.
Killings of 3 Gandhis : India’s three most prominent Gandhis died a brutal death. However, the similarities end with the assassinations. For, the killers of the three Gandhis were treated differently. At a time when speculations are rife that the assassins of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi may walk free after 23 years if the Supreme Court accepts Tamil Nadu government’s decision, a comparative study as to how the killers of the three Gandhis were brought to book has become imperative. Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by an ethnic Tamil female suicide bomber during a campaign in 1991. As many as 16 others were also killed in the attack. The assassination was orchestrated by Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels to avenge Gandhi's decision to send Indian peacekeepers to intervene in the country's civil war in the 1980s. The entire issue has raised a lot of controversy especially after 11-year-long delay in deciding their mercy petition had a dehumanising effect on them. The killers have already spent 23 years ...

The President must dismiss Tamil Nadu Govt. * The Parliament must immediately pass a unanimous resolution and recommend to the President to dismiss the Tamil Nadu government for this totally Unconstitutional act which is nothing short of revolt against the nation. The Supreme Court has only commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment because of extraordinary delay in deciding the mercy petition, which, according to the Apex Court is violation of Article 21 of the Constitution. The release of the assassins amounts to challenging the authority of the Constitution and Supreme Court. If all the political parties are prompted by their political motives and fail to develop a consensus on this issue of utmost national importance, it is bound to sow the seeds of disintegration. * Dr. Mustafa Kamal Sherwani,LL.D. To err is human, to forgive is divine. Great decision by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha.
It was Mr RAJDEEP who tried to make politics by bringing a Kashmiri Advocate and tried to play Afzal card. But, when Thirumurugan Gandhi responded sensibly and truly, that it is Tamil Nadu, which raised voice against Afzal, Rajaona etc, how dare you try to belittle us by quoting, "it is mere Tamil sentiments", Rajdeep had no other option of running away. Congrats Thirumurugan Gandhi.

Dear Tamil Brothers & Sisters,    I woke up on the 29 th of August to the news of a woman having immolated herself. She had entered the Kanchipuram taluk collector's office and set herself on fire the previous day, in the hope of preventing the hanging of three fellow Tamils and human beings. The Supreme Court has ordered Perarivalen, Murugan and Santhan to be executed on the 9 th of September for their alleged roles in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. Few outside Tamil Nadu (T.N) know the complexity of this case, along with the discrepancies between the Court verdict, the evidences presented through the CBI interrogation and the findings of the Jain commission. Later I came to know that her name was Senkodi, and she was a young but active member of the social movement Makkal Mandram (Peoples assembly/forum). Quite contrary to some English media's presentation of the movement as Tamil chauvinistic, Makkal Mandram (and Senkudi) was involved in numerous struggles against slum eviction, caste and labor ...

At present it consists of isolated mountains between which the ocean flows.” The 13th century Venetian adventurer, Marco Polo, mentions ‘Setabund Rameshwara’, a bridge related to Ram. I dont know why? how? people in Tamil Nadu tolerate her, why should the same be extended to India? time for Gowda to retire atleast now.

The differences between the two states over the safety of the dam is still continuing without able to find a solution. Please read my article "The Impact of a Failed Congress, an anarchic AAP and a Non-Existent Third Front." and share your opinions. The past few days have presented an insight about the emerging political scenario of the country. For us in the BJP the prospects appear to be encouraging. The Congress Party has dominated the politics of post-Independence India. In the last few years the performance of the ruling UPA alliance has been extremely shaky and non-inspirational. All polls appear to be indicating that the Popularity of its leaders lags way behind Narendra Modi in the run up to the 2014 General elections. The Congress is likely to lose its strength in most States. There is hardly a State where it is likely to cross the 2009 figure. As the election draws nearer the front runner’s advantage in favour of the BJP would be further consolidated. Additionally, areas which have not been strong-holds of the BJP are showing a sizeable surge in the BJP vote. States like Tamil Nadu, Odisha, West Bengal and And ...

Ethanol blending with petrol yet to gather steam Some seven years have passed since the government launched the programme to blend 5 per cent ethanol with petrol. However, the desired blending has not yet been achieved because of problems over pricing and procurement. Ethanol is considered a green fuel and its blending with petrol will help reduce India´s heavy dependence on crude oil imports. But ethanol is also used by the chemical and alcohol industries and the prices of the fuel in these two sectors determines its cost to the oil marketing companies (OMCs). Blending at the rate of 5 per cent will require 1,050 million litres ethanol annually. But the OMCs (Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum) have procured only 400 million litres since January 2013. Blending in states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi and Karnataka has been taking place at 10 per cent but in several other states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat only 5 per cent has been achieved. At th ...

I congratulate Rahul Gandhi (for his new found charge and aggression at But I still smile in silence on his lack of knowledge. It was an empty bomb. Rahul: Nobody pressurised to do the RTI, the Congress got up and said that the country needs RTI Fact: Freedom of Information Bill, 2000, drafted under HD Shourie, in NDA regime, became Freedom of Information Act in 2002. The rise of actor Vijay, perhaps the last of the political animals of Tamil cinema , and a challenge that fizzled out There were fans aplenty, each more enthusiastic than the other. They whistled and garlanded and poured milk on the towering cut-outs of the baby-faced actor. That might be standard obeisance ritual in Tamil Nadu when a "star movie" releases but this was happening far away, across the border in Kerala, in a small town called Pala in Kottayam district. And the young men were as much in thrall of actor Vijay, as those in Coimbatore and Chennai. Indian's are very disappointed with Preet Bharara's ( United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York) decision on " Not to give immune" to Diplomat Devayani" !. Indian's are behaved like that in an inter-state Dam issue earlier. A border dam and its water sharing conspiracy in South India, that ended with the same disappointment. This dam issue with Kerala and Tamil Nadu goes emotional! A Kerala born Judge mR.K.T.Thomas appointed as Judicial commission head. Unfortunately, His verdict was against Kerala's interest. That time people of Kerala blindly attacked that judge in bad manner. Kerala is India's top educated state. In controversy, people behave like childish. They seems to be childish and irresponsible!. Empathy makes them fail in critical stages. These educated state voted for Indira after emergency in India. Their own leaders kept in jail for 18 months without FIR. Uneducated states casts their votes against Indira to save Democracy.

I wish to share with you a significant achievement in the Micro and Small Scale Industries (MSME) sector in West Bengal. We are No.1 in credit flow in the MSME sector in the country. During the period April-September 2012, the credit flow from banks in MSME sector in Bengal was the highest at Rs.4331 Crore. Again, we are still No.1 during the period April-September 2013, with the highest credit flow of ₹ 8900 Crore to the MSME sector. This is more than 105% increase on year-to-year basis. Few other states like Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh have recorded an average growth below 50%. This has been possible due to the persistent follow-up of the West Bengal Government in providing the entrepreneurs all necessary assistance for setting up and running business successfully.
