One year ago today: two strangers meet for the first and only time.  An unarmed black teenager -- Trayvon Martin. And George Zimmerman, a white Hispanic neighborhood watch volunteer, patrolling with a gun. Martin, just 17, was killed. Their families, of course, see things differently. Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, told Piers Morgan: "We just want to have that trial and let the jury decide, and whatever decision comes out of that, we're going to accept that. We may not like it, but we're going to accept it."  Zimmerman's brother Robert told Piers, if George Zimmerman had not gone out with a gun that night, "we don't know what would have happened. We may be commemorating the one year anniversary of George being another  statistic. Another person killed at the hands of his attacker." Even one year on -- we -- the public -- remain polarized along racial and political lines on who was the victim that night.   Talk Back: Trayvon Martin one year later: what have we learned?
Yahoo's new executive is shaking things up. I'm sure you've heard -- Marissa Mayer has ordered telecommuters back to the office. In a memo obtained by the tech blog "All Things D", Yahoo's H.R. chief wrote, in part: "... to become the absolute best place to work ... we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices." The thinking here: that the best ideas come from face-to-face conversations with your co-workers. But working moms - and other Yahoo employees - may think the switch to a cubicle from the comforts of home has little impact on their creativity.  But a big impact on their attempts at a work-life balance.   Talk Back: Is Yahoo wrong to end telecommuting?
An editor at salon.com thinks so -- talking about the moment when the First Lady presented the award for best picture. It was the latest in a string of high profile appearances this week, timed to the third anniversary of her "Let's Move" initiative -- with the Obama Administration recently praising the program, claiming that "the national childhood obesity rate has leveled off" as a result. Now the First Lady is celebrating that milestone, meeting with Big Bird at the White House. She's showing off her dance moves with Jimmy Fallon. And even talking to Rachel Ray about those much buzzed-about bangs. But with a 73-percent approval rating -- higher than her hubby, his Cabinet and, of course, Congress, maybe the Oscars aren't the best use of the First Lady's time.  Instead of all those cameos, she might champion some grittier political issues -- like the deficit, gun control, or the pressing need for bipartisanship.      Talk Back: Did Michelle Obama "jump the shark" at the Oscars?
When all else fails -- call in the troops. Complete with a military general, battle-trained soldiers, and armored vehicles. Gen. Russel Honore, talking about gun violence in Chicago, told WLS: "You got to reinforce the liberties for people to walk the streets so that little girls like Ms. Pendleton don't get shot in the schoolyard. That's a shame. That should not happen in America."  Chicago --with more than 500 murders in 2012. And the aforementioned, Hadiya Pendleton, who was killed in the crossfire a mile from President Obama's Chicago home. Honore knows a thing or two about restoring order.  After Katrina -- the city's government was in shambles. Looting and violence ruled. Until the tough-talking Honore and his troops took over. Take that drug dealers! Gang leaders! Of course, the people -- and especially local police might have a problem with federal intervention. But still...   Talk Back: Is the National Guard the answer to gun violence?
I'm taking a page from salon.com's David Sirota. Who says -- Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln" is the front-runner for the Oscars. Why? Because of a common Hollywood theme: The white protagonist -- in this case, President Lincoln -- sweeping in to rescue the mostly passive blacks from their plight. Many, like historian Kate Masur, have criticized "Lincoln" for having no major black characters. This -- in a movie about slavery. Masur wrote in The New York Times: "...it is disappointing that in a movie devoted to explaining the abolition of slavery in the United States, African-American characters do almost nothing but wait for white men to liberate them." Disappointing, perhaps. But not surprising.  Hollywood has hit gold with "white savior" type films. The movies "The Blind Side" and "The Help" earned a combined 425-million dollars. And won two major Oscars. Obviously, the white savior is a winning formula. And let's face it...money talks.   Talk Back: Is the key to winning the Oscar a "white savior?"
How to win friends and influence people. It's one of the best selling self-help books of all time.     Maybe someone should send a copy to Texas Republican Ted Cruz. The freshman senator has been accused of "McCarthyism," and "over-stepping his bounds." Sen. John McCain chastised Cruz's criticism of the embattled Defense Secretary nominee Chuck Hagel. See, for some reason, freshman lawmakers are supposed to speak only when spoken to. But not Cruz . "At the end of the day, I was elected to represent 26 million Texans and to speak the truth," he told CNN. "I think a lot of Americans are tired of politicians in Washington - in both parties - who play games." Still,  while Cruz's outspokenness may be refreshing...his Tea Party views could really mess up that Republican "re-branding" plan.   Talk Back: Is Senator Ted Cruz hurting the Republican party?
With his death only a half hour away -- Warren Lee Hill, the twice-convicted killer,  was granted a stay of execution. Hill shot his girlfriend 11 times -- and bludgeoned a fellow inmate to death.  But he has an I.Q. of 70. To his lawyer, that makes all the difference. "There's now no dispute among  any of the experts that have examined Mr. Hill over the last 22 years, that he is mentally retarded," lawyer Brian Kammer told CNN. And -- as the Supreme Court has ruled --  America must not execute mentally disabled people.  Americans appear conflicted on the death penalty. Although a majority still favor it -- the number of executions has gone way down since the 1990s -- from 98 executions in 1999 -- to 43 in 2011.  Many juries prefer to impose life without parole.  One reason, perhaps: in the past 40 years, more than 140 people have been freed from death row with evidence of their innocence.   Talk Back: Is it time to revisit the death penalty?
Today, we have a new word to add to your vocabulary: Smurfing. No, it does not involve body surfing little blue people. As in smurfs. "Smurfing"  means going from legal pot shop to legal pot shop in colorado for the purpose of accumulating marijuana to sell on the black market. That's a big no-no. Legalizing recreational marijuana is one thing -- but pot tourism?  Now a Colorado talk force has come up with ways to prevent smurfing -- the bill would limit marijuana sales to out of state pot shop owners. But regular folks? You still are encouraged to come and get that rocky mountain high.   Talk Back: Is it wrong for a state to embrace pot tourism?
I know -- it's "Saturday Night Live." It's comedy. Free speech and all that. But, I must say the skit called,  "The ultimate historical revenge fantasy: Djesus Uncrossed" bugged me. It is lent. And, Christians around the world are celebrating Christ's sacrifice on the cross and his resurrection from the dead.     Do we really need to see Jesus wielding an Uzi and a bloody sword? I know, I get it. DJesus was played by Christoph Walz -- the guy in "Django Unchained." And I should be LOL-ing.  But, I'm not. It's okay to joke about Jesus, even during one of the holiest seasons on the Christian calendar.  But, maybe it's not okay to jesus -- who was all about forgiveness -- as a psychopath, *** bent on revenge.   Talk Back: Did Saturday Night Live cross the line with "DJesus Uncrossed?"
President Obama is all touchy-feely emotions when it comes to guns. Surrounding himself with gun violence victims at the State of the Union. Many were choking up  -- as he pleaded:  "The families of Oak Creek, and Tucson, and Blacksburg, and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence - they deserve a  simple vote." It can't get more raw than that. At the same time, for the NRA, it's all about fear. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre said, responding to the President's speech: "We are the millions and millions of Americans who take responsibility for our own safety and protection of our children as a God-given right...And for our Second Amendment freedom, Mr. President, we will stand and fight, throughout this country as Americans, for our freedom." It's almost as if -- if you don't own a gun, you'll die.  You can't trust anybody except your guns.  In the political game -- of sorrow versus fear.     Talk Back: Who's winning the war over gun control?
History in the U.S. Senate! Not the Lincoln-and-the-13th Amendment kind of history. But, the partisanship-kind. Republicans have successfully blocked the confirmation of Chuck Hagel for Defense Secretary. In part because of Hagel's controversial remarks on *** and jews -- and his terrible performance during his confirmation hearings.  But, also because, five months ago, terrorists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Sen. Lindsay Graham said: "We will continue pushing and asking (the President) questions about Benghazi, not because it's personal, not because we're Republicans and he's a Democrat, but because America needs to learn what happened and we need to learn from our mistakes." This -- despite testimony from: General Petraeus, Hilllary Clinton, Admiral Mike Mullen, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and General Martin Dempsey -- among others. Not enough. Republicans now want more answers from the President, even though he sent them a letter overnight with more details.       Talk Back: ...
Amazed but I shouldn't be- Chris Dorner is finally taken down/out/killed and CNN's next day "Talk Back" focus question- "Does the Dorner teach us anything about guns?" Hard to believe?! Guns were used...yes, but more legislation banning guns wouldn't prevent a licensed law enforcement agent (Dorner) from obtaining what he wanted. How about from this sad, deplorable tragedy we ask- "What did the Dorner case teach us about the state of politics, honor and truth inside law enforcement agencies?" Who are these agencies accountable to?
Carol Costello's new Talk Back segment on CNN is phenomenal debate. I have been on twice but today Jason Jones, Van Jones and Ross Douthat talking minimum wage is really really interesting and informative
Talk back: Should the minimum wage be raised? President Obama says he wants to help more Americans make it to the middle class. One way to do that? Pay 'em more. The President proposed raising the federal minimum wage to $9 and linking it to inflation. Sounds good, right? Nineteen states already have a higher minimum wage than the national one. And expect push back. We're already hearing complaints from small business owners -- who'll be paying more for employee insurance under Obamacare. And from Congress. House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan says linking minimum wage to inflation will only hurt - not help the working poor. Talk Back: Should the minimum wage be raised?
Talk Back: Should President Obama use his bully pulpit more? Don't expect tea and roses at President Obama's State of the Union speech. He'll come out swinging. On jobs, the economy and the middle class. Presidential aides telling "Politico" -- Obama plans to burn some political capital -- to force Republicans to cave on more taxes and fewer budget cuts. Instead of $1.2 trillion in cuts already planned on March 1st. In his weekly address, Obama said: "Most members of Congress - including many Republicans - don't think it's a good idea to put thousands of jobs at risk and do unnecessary damage to our economy. And yet the current Republican plan puts the burden of avoiding those cuts mainly on seniors and middle-class families. They would rather ask more from the vast majority of Americans and put our recovery at risk than close even a single tax loophole that benefits the wealthy." What's that, Mr. President? Higher taxes -- again? Republican Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky -- who'll give the Tea Party respo ...

Good Morning! Northeast friends are you ready for the big blizzard? A part of me doubts our weather experts, but they say New England is in for one *** of a storm. I guess I'm used to the hysterical forecasts here in Atlanta. One day meteorologists predicted freezing rain. It was 39-degrees. And the temperature wasn't likely to dip lower. Schools were cancelled. Argh! The manhunt is still on in California. An embittered ex-cop, who wants to die, is bent on killing as many police officers and their loved ones as possible. Supposedly someone sighted this guy (I don't like writing his name)...but, who knows? We're live in Riverside. On a brighter note: our new half-hour Talk Back show went off without a hitch yesterday. Today, we'll try it again. Thanks for all your comments. I plan to incorporate more of them into the show today. See you at 9 and 10 AM ES
Join us as CNN Newsroom and Carol Costello (Carol Costello CNN) debut her new Talk Back segment! What would you like to see Carol take on?
Talk Back: Are the Newtown kids being exploited? Suddenly, the Newtown kids are stars. Shortly after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary school, they popped up on "Saturday Night Live." It was a touching moment -- we thought that would be it. But now, they seem to be everywhere. At the Super Bowl, at a Knicks game. There's even a movie in the works about a mentally ill child -- whose illness is triggered by the tragedy. To some close to Newtown -- it's crossed the line. Rudy Marconi, first selectman of Ridgefield, says: "The bottom line to us is anything, whether it's based on, inspired by mental health that concerns Newtown and that tragedy the wound is still way too fresh for anything to be done like that." And now we learn the "E" network, home of Joan Rivers, The Fashion Police, and the Kardashians, will feature the Newtown kids in the Grammy red carpet pre-show. They'll be singing the wildly popular song, "Call Me Maybe." You know -- the one about the girl who pines over a guy who's *** Call me ...
Talk Back: Should the U.S. be able to kill American terrorist suspects without trial? The Constitution is like our secular bible. And its Sixth Amendment guarantees every American accused of a crime to trial by jury. Except maybe, for Americans suspected of terrorism who are living abroad. A Justice Department memo says the government has the right to kill an American citizen overseas -- if they're a senior operational leader of al Qaeda. And poses an "imminent threat." The White House says such killings are justified. White House Spokesman Jay Carney was asked whether this gives a legal justification for killing American citizens without any trial, and without any evidence. "I would point you to ample judicial precedent for the idea that someone who takes up arms against the United States, in a war against the United States, is an enemy and can be targeted accordingly," Carney said. It's not like it's never happened. It has. Anwar al-Awlaki -- an American -- was killed by an American drone in Yemen in .. ...
Talk Back: Who were the winners & losers at the Super Bowl? Super Bowl 47: truly, one of the strangest trips ever. It had it all. Mayors talking about gun control. The President talking about *** equality in the Boy Scouts. In an interview with CBS's Scott Pelley, Obama said: "My attitude is that *** and *** should have access and -- and opportunity the same way everybody else does, in every institution and walk of life." there were also touching patriotic ads honoring our troops. And farmers. Doritos and Calvin Klein underwear. Oh, wait! There was football too. A whiplash-inducing game. Still, you had to wonder -- who had more to prove last night -- the Ravens, the 49ers, or Beyonce? The game was a blow-out until Beyonce's overly produced light show blew it out. Maybe not literally, but still. How many times in your life have you witnessed a power outage after a spectacular 108-yard Super Bowl touchdown run? As Tom Shales put it in the Chicago Sun-Times -- when the lights went out: "...(this) big ...
Talk Back: Should the NFL's Chris Culliver be penalized for anti *** comments? Here we were -- ready to kick back with chicken wings and beer, and watch the Super Bowl. And BAM! Chris Culliver of the San Francisco 49ers ignites the culture wars. Spurred on by radio host Artie Lange's question about *** guys." "I don't do the *** guys man. I don't do that, " Culliver said. "Are there any on the 49ers?," he was asked. "No -- we don't got no *** people on the team. They gotta get up outta here if they do. can't be with that sweet stuff.can't be in the locker room, no." Hello? Did Culliver forget he plays for San Francisco, the cradle of the *** rights movement? Apparently, yes. Because later, he apologized. When asked what he would say to San Francisco, Culliver said: "That I'm sorry that I offended anyone, and like I said that was very ugly comments, and that's not what I feel in my heart.hopefully to learn from this experience and this situation. And that I love San Francisco." Already there are calls ...

Talk Back: Will God decide who wins the Super Bowl? No disrespect, but the Super Bowl has become the God Bowl. Its star players so religious -- there is no mistaking they feel God is playing alongside them. "I think God watches over everybody," said San Francisco's Colin Kaepernick. "I don't think he's cheering for one team or another. I think he's helping everybody, just trying to keep everybody safe. He has a plan for everyone." For the 49ers quarterback, God's message is more than skin deep. His tattoos are based in scripture. Testimonies to faith, self-confidence and overcoming adversity. One sample is from the psalm: "Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident." And of the mighty army soon to surround Kaepernick -- Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, who thanks God before interviews, often quotes scripture, and makes no secret of his devotion to God. His pastor, Dr. Jamal Bryant of the Empowerment Temple, believes God will be looking out fo ...
Talk Back: Obama *** shooting: on target or telling? At face value it's a silly argument - the President, *** shooting, whatever? But, it seems nothing is silly when it comes to debating gun control in America. It all started with an interview in the New Republic, where President Obama said: "Up at Camp David, we do *** shooting all the time." The Editor-in-Chief, Chris Hughes, was stunned. "We knew that he fired weapons on Secret Service firing ranges and things like that in the past, but the idea of him going up to Camp David and shooting regularly and enjoying it is a new side to the President that I at least hadn't seen and I think a lot of others hadn't either." That includes Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn, of Tennessee. Who says -- why now, Mr. President? "If he is a *** shooter, why have we not heard of this, why have we not seen photos, why hasn't he referenced this at any point in time? We had this gun debate that is ongoing. You would have thought it would have been a poi ...

Talk Back: Should the Super Bowl be politicized? The Super Bowl: it's one of the few events that capture the nation's undivided attention. Last year some 111-million people watched. That's roughly a third of the American population. One of this year's Super Bowl players, Brendon Ayanbadejo of the Baltimore Ravens -- wants to seize the media frenzy to push for *** equality -- an issue he's been passionate about for years. He told WBAL radio: "For me personally, I just see it as a human rights issue. It's not *** rights, it's just equal rights, it's just human rights. And whether it's suffrage, you know go back to slavery or segregation, *** rights, it's all the same thing to me. I've gotten a lot of scrutiny. I'm officially known as the ambassador, the *** ambassador." Ayanbadejo told the New York TImes' Frank Bruni if the Ravens win, his dream is not to go to Disney World, but to go on "Ellen." "That's my ultimate goal after the Super Bowl.to go on Ellen's show, to be dancing with her. To bust a move w .. ...
Talk Back: Do you agree with Boehner: Obama will try to "annihilate" the Republican Party? Republican. Remember that word, because it might go the way of the dinosaurs. Annihilated not by a giant meteor, but President Obama. That's if you believe Republican House Speaker, John Boehner: "We're expecting the next 22 months to be the focus of this administration as they attempt to annihilate the Republican Party. And let me just tell you. I do believe that is their goal - to just shove us into the dustbin of history." Boehner was talking to a group of mainstream Republicans a day after President Obama laid out his agenda in his inaugural address. That agenda includes climate change, gun control and *** marriage. Issues only a Republican House can block. Hence, Boehner argues -- the President needs total annihilation to achieve his liberal agenda. The White House is not responding. But it's an odd turnaround. Just two years ago, we were hearing this from the Senate Minority Leader, Republican Mitch McConne .. ...
Talk Back: Do you care if Beyonce lip-synched the National Anthem? I know. It's not news. But, admit it -- you're talking about Beyonce. Everybody is. On the cover of the New York Daily News: "Star Spangled Scammer." Oh, say it ain't so, Bey! It is still unclear whether Beyonce was actually singing, or singing with the mic off while a pre-recorded Beyonce sang -- or was not singing at all. Despite our requests -- Beyonce hasn't clarified. The horrible uncertainty surrounding the Queen Bey is stirring passion. Donni Wahlberg from "New Kids on the Block" says: "None of us care...like we don't. She's Beyonce; she's a superstar, she can sing...we don't need to get into geo-political, neutral political. It doesn't matter. There shouldn't be a picture of Beyonce and Lance Armstrong on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow, like 'Scandals'. I mean it's a song, it's freaking 20 degrees." Seems most are giving BK a pass. And, I gotta say -- that bugs me. I feel duped. I know Beyonce is a talented singer -- ...
Talk Back: What did you take away from the Armstrong interview? We are so over you, Lance. So over. After the interview, the backlash was quick and fierce. Yahoo called it a "sociopathic spectacle." Adding: "If you never met this jerk, well, count your blessings." Armstrong told Oprah he couldn't even remember how many people he's sued for -- in effect, telling the truth. It says a lot about a man when -- on his own apology tour -- he's not sure who to apologize to. Kathy LeMond, wife of cyclist Greg LeMond, told the L.A. Times: "I can't describe to you the level of fear he brings to a family, other than to liken it to a drunken, alcoholic, abusive spouse who gets out of jail with a bouquet of roses for his bloodied spouse, saying, 'Here, I'm sorry I did that.'" And there's Betsy Andreu -- the wife of former teammate Frankie Andreu - who testified she'd heard Armstrong admit to doping. For years, Armstrong buried her in insults, and derailed her husband's career. They've since talked -- but Armstrong sai ...
Talk Back: Why do we cheat? Come on, 'fess up. We cheat because it's easy. We've become a nation of cheaters. 'Cause cheaters...win. Yankee slugger Alex Rodriguez admitted to ESPN in 2009: "I did take a banned substance, and for that I'm very sorry and deeply regretful." But A-Rod still gets to play for the team that boasted DiMaggio and Ruth -- and hold on to his $275 million contract. Why is that? Dr. Bruce Weinstein, known as "The Ethics Guy," says: "We cheat because we can and we often cheat because there won't be consequences of cheating. Sometimes people who realized they wont be punished if they do something wrong will go ahead and do something wrong. So there has to be consequences to the behavior for there to be a change in the behavior." Ah, consequences. Yes, Bill Clinton was impeached -- but he got a standing "O" at the Golden Globes. So, it's no surprise the former butt of one-thousand Appalachian trail jokes, Mark Sanford is back in the news. Despite his teary confession of infidelity -- he ...
Talk Back: Is the NRA leadership on target or out of touch? It's personal now. A new NRA web ad makes no bones about it. Want to take away our guns? -- we're going for the jugular. The ad calls President Obama an "elitist hypocrite" for allowing his children to go to school with armed guards, but opposing the nra's proposal for the same thing nationwide. Normally -- presidential kids are off-limits -- but when it comes to Second Amendment rights -- nothing is sacred. NRA President David Keene told CNN the organization is is mobilizing for a fight and engaging its members. This ad is just a start. A response to the president's reluctance to put armed guards in every school. On Meet the Press, Obama said: "I am skeptical that the only answer is putting more guns in schools..and I think the vast majority of the American people are skeptical that that somehow is going to solve our problem." Ah, see that's the thing. By saying that -- President Obama opened to door to the NRA's latest salvo: if our elitist pre ...
Talk Back: Can Lance Armstrong redeem himself? How far the mighty have fallen. Lance Armstrong has reportedly confessed to Oprah he took performance-enhancing drugs. Even his world-famous charity -- Livestrong -- is tainted. The onetime hero -- branded a liar. As the New York Post puts it: "Lie-strong." That's how he'll go down in history now. Let's take a moment to re-visit Armstrong's years of prickly denials. In a 2005 deposition, he told the questioner asking about an allegation he was seen engaged in doping: "How many times do I have to say it?...if it can't be any clearer that I've never taken drugs, then incidents like that could never have happened. How clear is that?" The same year, on "Larry King Live": "I've said it for seven years, I've said it for longer than seven years. I've never doped." Now, Armstrong's redemption tour starts Thursday, when Oprah airs her 90-minute interview with a tearful lance. Live-streamed around the world. Expect to hear lots of "I'm sorry." many are saying -- ...
Talk Back: What is the best way to honor the Newtown victims? Today, Newtown is trying to decide what to do with, what was once a safe place, for kids. Sandy Hook Elementary has been cleaned of the carnage -- but memories cannot be cleansed. They live on. Just ask families of the victims in Aurora. The movie theater reopens Friday. Its owner invited the relatives of the nine people killed there to watch a film in the very theater where their loved ones died. Many were deeply offended. "As a family member of someone who has been butchered in that theater, it has been extremely insensitive. And the other family members feel exactly the same way, " said Sandy Phillips, victim Jessica Ghawi's mother. Newtown is more complicated. Some suggest the school should be torn down. Or made into a memorial. Or even kept open. As a way to help everyone move on. Maybe it's not about teddy bears or letters of condolence or college scholarship funds -- but, something more lasting. Those close to the Sandy Hook tragedy say: ...

Talk Back: Should we welcome pastors in the public square despite their views on homosexuality? President Obama asked Rev. Louis Giglio, an Atlanta pastor and ardent foe of human trafficking, to deliver the benediction at the inauguration. This is a man with the power to attract 60-thousand people -- in the honorable fight against modern-day slavery. Everything was a go -- until *** rights groups uncovered a sermon he gave in the 1990s, where he said: "If you look at the counsel of the word of God, Old Testament, New Testament, you come quickly to the conclusion that homosexuality is not an alternate lifestyle... Homosexuality is not just a sexual preference, homosexuality is not *** but homosexuality is sin." After a backlash from *** rights supporters, Giglio bowed out, telling his congregation: "The issue of homosexuality.is one of the most difficult our nation will navigate. However, individuals' rights of freedom, and the collective right to hold differing views on any subject is a critical balance . ...
Talk Back: Why the secrecy surrounding guns? All the major players on the gun issue -- including the NRA -- are showing up at the task force meeting with Vice President Joe Biden. Except for Wal-Mart, a major gun retailer. It seems they're.busy. Wal-Mart told us: "We take the sale of firearms very seriously and are committed to the responsible sale of firearms. We were invited to attend the meeting on Thursday and we had scheduling conflicts." Wal-Mart insists they're not dissing the White House. They say they're open to conversations on the topic. Yet we tried to talk to them about how many guns they sell. No dice. They won't tell us. Why? They won't say. There's one thing we do know -- most gun owners do not like publicity. We learned this -- after New York's Journal News was blasted for publishing lists of gun permit owners in the area. Gun-rights advocates pounced. Ann Coulter told FOX's Sean Hannity: "If we're producing lists of gun permit owners, I want them for Manhattan. I want to know how many .. ...
Talk Back: Why are we hooked on violence on screen? We've always been intrigued by serial killers. Ted Bundy.
Talk Back: What, if any, new gun laws should be passed? We're getting our first glimpse into what the White House may propose in terms of gun legislation. According to the Washington Post, Joe Biden and his task force are considering: reinstating the ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines; requiring universal background checks for gun buyers; establishing a national gun sale database; strengthening mental health checks; and imposing stiffer penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors. Wow. Ideas. Something to talk about. Oh forget that: already, NRA-backed lawmakers are shooting down the Administration's approach. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, a Democrat from North Dakota, said: "I think you need to put everything on the table but what Ii hear from the administration and if the Washington Post is to be believed, that's way -- way in extreme of what I think is necessary or even should be talked about and it's not going to pass." We're talking about this on the same day that James . ...
Talk Back: Will America ever come together on guns? It's been almost two weeks since Newtown. Where does America stand when it comes to guns? On the one hand, gun sales have surged -- including those of semi-automatic rifles like the one used in Newtown. Yet in Los Angeles, people stood on line for two hours for a gun buyback. Some wanted guns out of the house. Others wanted the gift cards. But many felt having more guns didn't make them safer. And what about NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre's proposal for armed guards in schools? The national teachers union, the NEA, was shocked at the idea -- calling the NRA "delusional." But politicians are split on the issue. And today, the Utah Shooting Sports Council is sponsoring a free concealed weapons class for educators. This, at the same time, two firefighters were shot and killed by a man with a semi-automatic rifle. The mayor of Philadelphia responded this way on MSNBC: "I guess Mr. LaPierre would then say that firefighters need to have armed gua ...

Talk Back: Do you have the right to know who owns a gun? It's a case of -- if you "out me" then I'll "out you." There's a backlash this morning against the newspaper "The Journal News" -- in New York's Hudson Valley. The paper published a map showing those with gun permits in two area counties. With a click, you can see the name, and address of each person licensed to own a handgun. As CynDee Royle, Editor and Vice President of the paper puts it, in light of the Newtown massacre: "People are concerned about who owns guns and how many of them...are in their neighborhoods." Hundreds of residents were shocked to see their information posted without notification. Gun owners are outraged. Bloggers are firing back -- outing The Journal News itself, by publishing the names and addresses of its staff. Scott F. Williams, an ex-Marine and gun owner who called into the paper said: "It's as if gun owners are sex offenders (and) to own a handgun risks exposure as if one is a sex offender. It's, in my mind, crazy." St ...
Talk Back: What is your favorite Christmas memory? It's been an emotionally exhausting year. I won't review -- too many painful moments. But, still, on this Christmas day, out of darkness, there is hope. Kindness. Giving. Compassion. Jesus would say -- love. In Newtown, exhausted police officers received a rare gift -- time off. Police from nearby communities are working in Newtown today -- to give the police the holiday with their families. And from around the nation and the world -- tens of thousands of toys have poured into Newtown. In their Christmas message, the President and First Lady spoke of America's compassion. "In this country, we take care of each other," Michelle Obama said. "That's part of what makes us such a compassionate nation," said President Obama. "This year, I know many of you are extending that kindness to the families who are still picking up the pieces from Hurricane Sandy and your prayers to the people of Newtown, Connecticut." My favorite memory as a child wasn't the cowgirl .. ...
Talk Back: Should Hollywood rethink violent movies? This Christmas eve, the stars unite for gun control in a new public service announcement: "Demand a Plan." Their plea to get guns off our streets includes actor Jamie Foxx -- who stars in the new Quentin Tarantino movie "Django Unchained." A violent "spaghetti western" -- which opens on Christmas day. After the Sandy Hook shooting, Foxx said he thought of his own kids. "It tears you up, because it's really getting dangerous. And we have to do something. And I think now, I feel that everyone is really pulling together. And we have to make some serious change." That "something" may or may not include a serious discussion of violence in movies. Foxx told "Monsters and Critics": "We cannot turn our back and say that violence in films or anything that we do doesn't have a sort of influence. It does." But Foxx's co-star, Samuel L. Jackson, doesn't see it that way. "I don't think one has anything to do with the other. It's a Western, and it's a period piece a . ...
We've had a few questions regarding Max Weinberg's mic set up as seen on the recent relief concert for Hurricane Sandy broadcast. We just got the word direct from Troy Milner, Bruce Springsteen's monitor mixer. Here is what he had to say: Yeah, I've been using the PR28's on both Toms and have a couple PR22's around the kit for Talk Back mics so Max can hear Bruce and Max can talk to me. We've all been super happy with the PR28s on the Toms. They are so big and warm and huge sounding especially in the ears. You should hear Max's ear mix, the drums are huge. Also, very happy and impressed with them on being so consistent every day all year long. We have been all over the world in every type of climate and those mics have been perfect every day. Tell Bob we are happy, and yes, you can see the Heil logo in just about every shot of Max on TV and Pictures. Hope you guys have a great holiday.
Talk Back: How should Nancy Lanza be remembered? The memorials, the makeshift vigils, are always the same. Twenty-six victims. In Sunday's memorial, President Obama said: "We gather here in memory of 20 beautiful children and six remarkable adults." There are twenty-six memorial Christmas trees. Twenty-six candles lit by UConn basketball players. Never in the same breath do we hear mention of Adam Lanza's first victim: his mother, Nancy Lanza. She was shot four times in the head while sleeping. By most accounts, she was a caring woman. Marsha Lanza, Adam's aunt, said: "She was a great friend, very sincere, very, very giving person, would give you the shirt off your back if you needed it." Russ Hanoman, a friend, said: "I've seen a lot of things in the media about her being a survivalist wacko, and that was not her at all." We don't know how Nancy Lanza dealt with her troubled son. Yet, what if -- as some reports suggest -- she was frightened by him? As an adult, she had no legal power over him. What to .. ...
Talk Back: What can be done to prevent another Newtown? That's tough. It requires thoughtful discussion. Something that seems impossible when it comes to gun violence. But, as the President says -- what choice do we have? The blame game has already begun. Mike Huckabee, pastor and FOX News host says our "Godless" schools are to blame. "We ask why there's violence in our schools, but we systematically remove God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools have become a place of carnage? Because we've made it a place where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means." CNN Contributor and Tea Party supporter Erick Erickson says in his column today that "single parent homes" lead to violence. Many are also blaming violent video games and movies. After all -- 11 violent movies are now in theaters -- just one week before Christmas -- the day we celebrate Christ's birth. Including Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained." Yet, of Newtown, Tarantino said: "It's just a horri .. ...
Talk Back: Are you prepared if the nation goes off the fiscal cliff? It's the ultimate game of chicken. Who will blink first on the fiscal cliff? Not the Obama administration. As Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told CNBC -- bring it on! When asked if the administration is prepared to go over the fiscal cliff, Geithner said: "Oh, absolutely. (If) we see there's no prospect to an agreement that doesn't involve those rates going up on the top 2% of the wealthiest." Taxpayers might think that's easy for Geithner to say. What about all those middle class families -- whose taxes will go up more than two-thousand dollars if -- as Geithner suggests -- we dive off that cliff? Even though President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner chatted on the phone -- there's still no deal. Republicans are not amused. "Incredibly many top Democrats including the President seems perfectly happy, perfectly happy to go off the cliff," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. "That's why the President has been more in .. ...
Talk Back: Should the photographer have taken the picture of the subway victim? The man who took the now-infamous New York Post photo of Ki-Suck Han falling to his death on the subway -- is now speaking out. New York Post freelance photographer R. Umar Abbasi says he didn't see the fight break out on the subway platform between Han and his alleged attacker. He told the Today show, he only heard shouting, then saw a body fly by him, and then Han was hit by the train. All of that, he says, happened in about 22 seconds. "If this thing happened again with the same circumstances, whether I had a camera or not, and I was running towards it, there is no way I could have rescued Mr. Han. What really surprises me is the people who were maybe 100 feet or 150 feet away from Mr. Han, they did not reach out to help him." Abbasi says he kept shooting and flashing, not to take a picture, but to alert the conductor to stop the train. Yet many have blasted Abbasi for not dropping the camera and trying to save Mr. Han. ...
Talk Back: What should come of the Obama-Romney luncheon? Awkward! President Obama. Mitt Romney. A luncheon of rivals...Who can forget the two on the debate stage -- prowling, pointing -- the bitter rivalry spawning, tortured catch-phrases: "Romnesia." "Romney-hood." "Obama-loney." Now the man who accused the other man of "giving away free stuff" may just dine on Obama-loney. Jimmy Kimmel said: "For the last eight months, Mitt Romney has been saying nobody should get a free lunch. Now, he's going to the White House to have a free lunch." We laugh. But what if Mr. Obama asked Mr. Romney to play an important role going forward? Even the president has acknowledged Romney's skill in making things -- like the Olympics -- run better. But the track record for post-election pow-wows is not good. After the 2008 election, John McCain and Obama met and vowed to work together on economic issues. Look at them now: not exactly best buds. Just say the word Benghazi and -- ouch! Still, it could be a win-win for both me . ...

I need a girl in my life that I can come to and talk to and she will talk back. I need a lady whose gonna care about me and ask me how my day was. I want someone who's gonna be by my side when I need her. I want a woman who is independent but still acknowledges that she needs someone there for her too. I need a girl who's gonna motivate and inspire my dreams just as I will hers. I need a girl who's ready to take a life journey. I'm sick of the fake. If you real and you wanna get at me just lemme know. Ever want to talk to someone and not do it because you don't know if they'll talk back? kinda feeling that way...lol
I hate seeing an elderly person sitting alone at a restaurant or sitting outside all alone or walking down the sidewalk, just putting along not a care in the world. Ive thought numerous times to stop and ask them if they wanted a ride to where they are goin, just so they won't be in the hot sun. We should all respect our elders, don't talk back to them, do as they say because we don't know what they have been through. They fought for our freedom, survived the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl and no telling what else. So next time i see an elderly person needing help, I'm going to help them, and i hope you all do the same.
Purple- You cute... And should talk back to my bro..

My grema wakes up and tells me to go in side at 10 so i say ok and she starts screaming a t me saying don't get smart and she also sead don't talk back to her, but all i sead was ok.
We were playing cards the other night and it was getting late. Jamie told Jacey it was bedtime. 3-yr old Jacey, in her silly "I'm being cute" mode with hands on her hips, nose in the air, and a knowing smirk on her face, declared she wasn't going to bed. The girls all cracked up at their youngest sister's silly feistiness. Jamie looked at me, and I turned away from Jacey as I was biting my lip, trying not to smile. Keeping a straight face, Jamie said, "Jacey, don't talk back to me. That's not funny. I'm being serious, it's bedtime." Jacey felt encouraged by her sisters who were stifling giggles, so looking back at her Daddy she repeated with a chuckle, "I'm not going to bed!" With that, Jamie stood up and Jacey's smile suddenly turned to a look of surprise and "oh crap". After getting a rare (and gentle) whack on the butt, a huge frown crept across her face as she was trying to hold back tears. As she moped out of kitchen, the girls went after her to comfort. A few seconds later I heard Jacey say somethin ...

We tried so hard to make things better for our kids that we made them worse. For my grandchildren, I'd like better. I'd really like for them to know about hand-me-down clothes and homemade ice cream and leftover meatloaf sandwiches. I really would. I hope you learn humility by being humiliated, and that you learn honesty by being cheated. I hope you learn to make your own bed and mow the lawn and wash the car. And I really hope nobody gives you a brand new car when you are sixteen. It will be good if at least one time you can see puppies born and your dog put to sleep. I hope you get a black eye fighting for something you believe in. I hope you have to share a bedroom with your younger brother. And it's all right if you have to draw a line down the middle of the room, but when he wants to crawl under the covers with you because he's scared, I hope you let him. When you want to see a movie and your little brother wants to tag along, I hope you'll let him. I hope you have to walk uphill to school with your ...

The initiative is punishable To push the simplest change, which seems nonsense - for example, changing the letters in the layout or correction of the creative process - you have to spend enormous power. Most of all, when you win in your business, you will not get any satisfaction. You will not be able to express their views publicly If you are an expert in online advertising, or just know who is who in the market, and you ...
My 4 legged child is full of energy and into everything this morning. lol I think i just heard my purse hit the floor and just a few minutes ago, he was trying to climb the curtain. Eww! lol New Guy is so full of himself this a.m. The funny thing is I dont have 2 legged children but the 4 legged babies are sometimes just the same as children. lol I jump up constantly to see who is in what, where are they hiding at, and they want to snack all day. (By all means they do not go hungry around here. lol) Such sweet funny creatures they are and they will not ever talk back to me. lol
A couple of my kids would probably like to do that to me! When I was younger I disagreed with my parents but never treated them with disrespect. There were many times I wanted to but out generation wasn't raised that way. Now the young people talk back to their parents all the time. They concentrate on their parents mistakes and forget about all the struggles and hard work. Families used to stick together-no matter what. I would never have said to my mother--you didn't do what I wanted you to do so you can't see your grandchildren. This seems to be the way the younger generation punishes their family members today. They use the kids as pawns. The kids probably wonder what they did wrong because they are actually the ones getting punished. All of a sudden part of their family is gone and they don't know why.I apologize for this digression but this really hit home. I have actually made myself physically sick thinking about it. I can't force my family to get along. All I can do is watch them hurt each other ...
The writer sets Daniel and his humble attitude in sharp contrast to the pride and complacency of King Nebuchadnezzar. In fact, Daniel so avoids prides that he represents of not only his own sin but also his people's sin (cf. Lev 26:40-42). We, like Daniel, must own not just our own sinful tendencies but also the legacy of sin and destruction our predecessors have left behind. When it is in our power to do so, we are to repair the damage already done - to act responsibly, even when we aren't responsible for the destruction. Doing so reaps the following benefits: 1. We can avoid repeating mistakes. 2. We learn to be cautious about our own lives and actions. 3. We learn to recognize the awesome character of God, who in his sovereignty brings judgment and by his mercy and grace offers forgiveness and restoration. 4. We discern that 'God's best' for our lives, including his best economic blessings, is in the future, not in the past or present. Author Beth Moore addresses this prayer passage in a Bible study on ...
As a child of God our blessings come from honorary our parents. Before we react quick to talk back, not be obedient, rebellious etc. Remember always who is watching. I want to honour the Lord in all my ways and it starts at home. I'm hope and pray this could be an encouragement to all the young people out here in this world. Honor God in all thy ways and He will honor you and be fruitful in this life. It starts with me. I ask for your prayers that I become Christ like in my life. And if anybody see's anything not right in my walk to the Lord Jesus Christ, I encourage you to let me know so I could strive to Him. God bless everyone this day of life and strive to please His heart.
Sometimes... I wish when I talk to Jehovah God. That he would talk back. If the world. was to end today, I probably wouldn't make it. But id be glad this is all over with.

Ok, I'm now officially furious! I've sat outside for 9 hours only to get stiffed for $1000, today I've been lied to, argued with and screwed over by someone I thought was a friend. This on top of having my heart ripped out and stomped on last night. This is exactly why I don't trust people. From now on I'm going to be content with staying single, and only associating with my family, my TRUE friends and my cats ( they don't talk back). Lol

I saw on the news today that a professional football player has been charged with domestic violence after hitting his MOTHER in her FACE with his cap, then shoving her. What a big man! I have two grown sons. Neither one would even THINK of disrespecting me or any other woman that way!!! I'm not saying I'm perfect, but I do know one thing, the parents that think it is "cute" to have smart mouthed toddlers who talk back, tell mom and dad, "NO!!!" and get rewarded with gales of laughter.watch out! You are growing a monster!!! Behavior you may consider cute at two...bet you won't love at 14! I am the co-pilot, I sit on the right, It's up to me to be quick & bright; I never talk back for I have regrets, But I have to remember what the captain forgets. I make out the flight plan & study the weather, Pull up the gear, stand by to feather; Make out the mail forms & do the reporting, And fly the old crate while the captain is courting. I take the readings, adjust the power, Put on the heaters when we're in a shower; Tell him where we are on the darkest night, And do all the bookwork without any light. I call for my captain and buy him cokes; I always laugh at his corny jokes, And once in awhile when his landings are rusty, I always come through with, "by gosh it's gusty!" All in all i'm a general stooge, As I sit on the right of the man I call scrooge; I guess you think that is past understanding, But maybe some day he will give me a landing
Which friend are you? Friends are not always what they seem. In many cases your so called friends are the ones who will hurt yo the most. They talk and often agree with the people who hate you. It is rarre to find someone who will stand by you even if they do not always want to. Without complaint or betrail. They are always with you even down the lonelyest of pathe. You may try to get them to leave for their own good but it is always to little avail. There are those who only come around once in a blue moon. You you seldom hear from and see even less of. They think life is a game and your just another pawn. Then there are those who will talk to you and pester you until you talk back. They try to see you as much as they can. They know that trust and life is a sacret thing and would never betray it or doubt you. Tell me now, Which friend are you? A read friend will answer and know what to say and how to answer. A fake friend will answer with what they think you want to hear. Know your friends and who you sho ...

Status Update By Carol Costello CNN Talk Back: What's the best way to win the war on drugs? Here's a pop quiz for you: what's the longest war America ever waged? No, not Iraq. Afghanistan? Nope. It's the drug war. For forty years, America has spent hundreds of billions fighting illegal drugs. The Obama Administration believes in a balanced approach to fighting drugs -- working on prevention and treatment, but also partnering with countries like Mexico to stem the flow. Yet -- in 2009, of the $31 billion spent fighting the drug war -- only one third of that money went to drug treatment. The bulk is spent on things like patrols, confiscation, and closing drug tunnels. Some, like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, say the real focus should be on the users and addicts. "The war on drugs, while well-intentioned, has been a failure," he said last week. "We're warehousing addicted people everyday in state prisons in New Jersey, giving them no treatment, sending them back out on the street after their term of in ...
This is Talk Back on Prince Tonye Princewill III, where every opinion is seen as an effort towards nation-building. Though corruption is essentially at the root of the bribery scandal involving a notable legislator, Farouk Lawan & an oil magnate, Femi Otedola, the bottomline is where does this leave the masses who are still hoping on all arms of the government including legislature to deliver on good governance & the business community to be more humane in their dealings? Do Talk Back!
Talk Back: What do you think of Bill Press's crusade against the Star Spangled Banner? Yes, Bill Press -- liberal talker, Current TV, hates our national anthem. He calls the Star Spangled Banner an "unsingable abomination." Although Press insists his view has nothing to do with patriotism, he did say this: "And 'the home of the brave?' I don't know."are we [Americans] The only ones who are brave on the planet? I mean all the brave people live here. I mean it's just stupid...I'm embarrassed; I'm embarrassed every time I hear it." Just what America needs right now! Because you wouldn't want to embrace patriotism when partisanship is at an all-time high, and during hard economic times. Conservatives are already calling him a liberal moon bat -- among other things I cannot say on TV. Seems more than one American has a problem with the anthem. At least when it comes to knowing the lyrics. You may remember -- Christina Aguilera flubbed the words in an epic Super Bowl fail. She sang what sounded like: "What so ...
Talk Back: How far should we go to fight obesity? New York City is sending out the soda police. That's right. In a move to curb obesity, Mayor Bloomberg plans to ban sugary drinks over 16 ounces in restaurants, movie theaters and street carts. It's part of a long campaign to fight the fat, including a public service announcement featuring a man drinking a glass of fat (that is, soda). Apparently, this didn't shock people into diet soda-drinking. According to the city's health department, more than half of New York's adults are obese or overweight. So, goodbye super size sugary soda! Mayor Bloomberg has already banned smoking in restaurants and parks. And wanted the government to prohibit food stamp purchases of sugary soda, like it does with tobacco and alcohol. (It did not.) The New York City Beverage Association says the city's attack on soft drinks is "over the top" -- mainly because Americans are drinking less of them, anyway. Oh, and what about banning those huge candy bars -- or hot fudge sundae ...

Talk Back: Is military service necessary to be a good president? On a day we honor our troops for their service to our country -- we still have men and women dying overseas. "It began in Iran when we failed to stand up in 2009. I...
